Lee Jong-hyuk considers psychopath role

Wow, what a change from varietyland’s cuddly papa and dramaland’s rom-com hero. Lee Jong-hyuk wasn’t messing around when he said he’d be focusing on a big acting transformation. After parting ways with hit variety show Dad! Where Are We Going? as Season 1 came to a close, Lee Jong-hyuk is leaving his Dating Agency Cyrano and Gentleman’s Dignity phase behind him, and looking at a thriller movie for his next project.

He’s currently being courted to star in Disappearance 2, a sequel to the 18+ violent thriller Disappearance (2009). Directing will be Park Yong-jib of Miss Gold Digger. Lee Jong-hyuk is up to play a psychopath serial killer described as uncommon (I don’t know what kind of serial-killing psychopaths are common, but anyhoo). It sounds gory, because it’s a called a thriller but “no different from a horror movie,” so that already kind of freaks me out.

I’m sure Lee Jong-hyuk will play the hell out of it, since he’s great doing everything from dark and sinister to suave and slick. I have to say, I did really enjoy the long stretch where he played funny romantic comedy characters, on top of which we got to watch him bumble his way through real-life fatherhood (so cute). But you can’t blame an actor for wanting to change it up. If he signs on, it’ll be his first movie in three years, since Blue Salt.

Disappearance 2 is still casting and plans to release later this year.

No, I too thought, "Why of course. He would be a perfect psychopath." Not sure why. But absolutely.

Maybe because of Chuno?

In any case, my first thought was, Junsu's Appa, Nooooooooo!!!

Then I remembered how he did a villain so well (Chuno) that I didn't recognize him as the dorky dad in Appa Odiga.

Even if he stuck to a charming sort of character, it would still work because of the context and come across totally different. I mean, charm and psychopaths ain't mutually exclusive. I'd say the nice ones are the scariest.

Exactly! If all psychopaths were obviously foaming at the mouth scary, their victims would never be victims in the first place.

What is with the influx of flowerboy serial killers? I mean, it's a reality - visually aesthetic people doesn't equate a good personality - however I don't know if they should be producing films with teenagers (and noonas) fangirling over someone killing someone else!!!

I'm expecting future comments like = "Oh oppa is soooo hawt when he murdered that girl....." -.-

I want him to be in police or law enforce character. He can be the cop every time...

It remind me of One of his film 'Dark Forest' although he is not psychopath but still ...

He was technically a cop/detective already--played the director of crime unit in Crime Squad. I watched it for him, but I got frustrated and dropped it around episode 12. It wasn't all that well-written, kind of predictable and overly simple. They had reasonably sound "bones" to work with, even if it wasn't the reinvention of the wheel, which made it all the more disappointing when they didn't use it to its full potential. As for his character, he didn't do much. With any luck that may have changed in the remaining episodes but i got tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop. What was Dark Forest about? Where can I see it?

The idea of Lee Jong Hyuk and Song Il Guk both starring as serial killers in two separate movies gives me goosebumps (in a good way!) LJH an awesome actor. The first drama I ever saw him in was Bicheonmou with Joo Jin Mo. Love this guy!

Tbh, I've only seen Lee Jong Hyuk act in A Gentleman's Dignity and I loved his character. I thought he played it well. However, I feel like he could do a great job with this role. I haven't seen the first movie of the series, so I'll have to watch that as well as his other works.

I hope he makes a great transition!

Oh wow, definitely a change for our loveable Jun-su Appa!

I think Lee Jong-hyuk can actually pull this off. Acting-wise, I think he can surprise you sometimes.

Aww... I really love him as that scaredy cat Lothario in AGD...

But even more so as clueless father in Appa Oediga...
There was this episode on family talent show and he was like... "what are you guys gonna show?" and his kids proceed to wrestle and he is like... "Ok... show your wrestling talent!" I love him!

I am glad hearing this news, and I know he has potential and now he is in the right time to show how good he can be. I think Kan ji wan is doing the same way to the other side of the road.
And he is so sexy, because a sexy badass helps a lot of too ,he,he.

It seems like all the commentors here have not seen him in "Chuno" aka the "Slavehunters".

That was the first thing I saw him in and he was a nasty, badass bastard and ruthless killer.

It was hard for me to see him as a hapless sweet guy in "Gentlemen with Dignity".

If you want to see how he plays BAD, watch Chuno.

Truth be told, I've never watched any of his dramas (only the first minutes of Gentleman Dignity, if that counts), but I still vividly remember his acting as a cameo in Flower Boy Next Door. It is still funny everytime I picture it in my mind.
