Lee Dong-wook eyes new drama Hotel King

Lee Dong-wook is poised to turn hotelier for an upcoming MBC drama Hotel King—or rather become one again, as he was a hotel chaebol in My Girl (not that he did much… hotelier-ing in that).

The role he’s considering favorably is of a cold, perfect hotelier who harbors a grudge against his father for ditching him and his mother to seek out his own success. A rep described it as a “complicated and difficult character,” though I think we’ve seen enough of these types in dramaland to understand what he’s all about. Y’know, perfectionism and ambition, hiding a soft wounded heart that only needs a good woman to heal over, etc.

Writing the drama is Jo Eun-jung of weekend drama Feast of the Gods and daily drama Goldfish, and directing is PD Kim Dae-jin of Just Like Today. It’ll follow Gold Rainbow, and as that show is only halfway through its 50-episode run, we still have a ways to go before Hotel King hits airwaves. I do like the idea of Lee Dong-wook returning to modern shows; I’ve enjoyed him so much through the years in roles that suited him better (Scent of a Woman, Partner, My Girl, La Dolce Vita) that it was actually something of a shocker to find him so jarringly over-the-top in his last show, Mandate of Heaven (although I really did like that show regardless). Perhaps this will be a more natural character for him.

Hotel King is currently in the process of casting its female lead and supporting cast, and will premiere in March.

I like him and yay that he is returning to modern dramas....the drama and character sound very cliched but let's see how it turns out.

If he's sporting that haircut in the drama I'm not watching it

The successful hard on the outside and broken on the inside character who's only reeeally seen by the other lead is actually my favorite, one of the only tropes that makes me shiver in feels...

I'm glad! He's one of my favorites and I usually enjoy the characters and dramas he picks out.

Will there be competing hotels in this drama? Cuz it sounds like he's already the king of a hotel, lol. I'll be interested in learning more about this.

My only problem with this is that it's a weekend drama so it might be 30+ episodes. I don't know if I have the attention span for that.

I don't think it's a weekend drama. The writer is the writer of the current weekend drama Feast of the Gods...

It will follow Golden Rainbow, which is a weekend drama.

Not all weekend dramas have 30+ episodes, think Gentlemen' Dignity..

I haven't seen him in a drama since Wild Romance which wasn't that bad, but someo f the plot point were kinda dumb. Like, i mean really? his aunt was his stalker that's kinda ... dumb

The stalker wasn't his real aunt, but a housemaid (or helper I guess the more appropriate word). I think he called her aunt to be polite though, but yeah they're not related so her being his stalker makes sense (okay, kinda but more than if she was his real aunt!).

Wild Romance, has been one of the most underrated comedies and I really didnt understand which was its sin to deserve 5 per cent of share. He did well in that role a bit different from cold chaebols, and after two failures again in the cliche...
A pity

I'm glad! I recently started Scent of a Woman, and now only 4 eps left. I'm wondering why I didn't watch it sooner (probably because I thought it was going to be a tearjerker but there's some great funny moments)

Good for you! I honestly love that drama, it's easily in my top 5. It's such a good drama to re-watch because there's some kind of freshness to it no matter how many times I watch it.

I was thinking of re-watching it since it's on Netflix. It's not a tearjerker at all (1 or 2 epsiodes maybe) lol. I think many people are scared to give it a try because of that but it's really sweet.

It's you and the camerman. His face is greyed out a little, kinda pale and sickly, particularly around the eyes. Bad shot, really. I'm just glad he's not grimacing.

"Complicated and difficult character"... lol, basically describes 90% of heroes in k-dramaland.
Never seen/heard of the pd/writers works and weekend dramas aren't exactly my cup of tea.

But darn, i kinda wanted to see him in a modern weekday drama too, not weekender. That's how i felt when jung il woo took up gold rainbow and then when lee jun ki took up angel eyes... Once in a blue moon i start a weekend drama -- and ones that i actually finish? Perhaps 1 my entire k-drama watching experience. Creating destiny, which was around 30 episodes with a cute OTP who ended up married irl.
My limit with melo is something along the lines of Nice Guy/TWTWB/Will it Snow for Christmas? And my limit with makjang is even lower -- Baker King. You gotta give me a character to root for.

Dia Frampton sings, 'I love the broken ones', so do I.

I braved through the latter part of 'crazy' wild romance for him so it's safe to say I'll watch this anyhow. La dolce vita is memorable despite it being tragic.

Lee Dong Wook oppa! I saw him first in scent of a woman. At first I thought he's Korean-American because his face doesn't look korean and I wondered who's this handsome cute actor. Turned out, he was already 30 in SOAW!

Yay!!! Although it's another cold chaebol character. My favourite role of his was in Wild Romance, (I still haven't seen La Dolce Vita, darnit) his character was so endearingly dumb and his comedic timing was spot on. Despite how flawed that show was, I really enjoyed the characters.

It's a little bit weird how these big name actors are now heading to weekend dramas (Lee Jun Ki, Lee Dong Wook) while up and comers like Lee Jong Suk are (potentially) headlining weekday primetime shows (Dr. Stranger). And idols are grabbing these roles too, with Yoochun headlining 3 Days. Are they not being offered the (weekday) shows? Or do they going for the safer bet - doing a drama that isn't going to flop in the ratings, since weekend dramas generally do better than weekday ones? Idk.

La Dolce Vita requires quite a commitment on the viewer's part. I enjoyed every intense, confusing, bitter, sexy moment of it, though some of it was watched with my hands covering my eyes.

Fans talk about What Happened in Baii as dark, or Que Sera Sera, but THIS is the darkest, I suggest, and riveting and unforgettable. LDW has a pornstache to end all pornstaches and drove my nuts in a good way.

The cast was wonderful, and filled with people surviving in a claustrophobic world - some you hate HATE, until you sympathize with them, and then you wish you could hate them. Oh Yun Soo ,Jung Bo Suk, Park Si Yeon are in the worst love square ever with LDW.
In a smaller but fascinating role, Jung Gyu Woon was the biggest surprise for me.
Oooh! And I fell in love with Columbo-like Baek Il Sub.

Wow - I wrote a lot. I really liked that show. Should rewatch? To accompany these cold dark days of winter?

Absolutely, absolutely and absolutely agree with all you said about La Dolce Vita.. Absolutely loved that show.

And glad you mentioned the performances from Jung Gyu Woon and Baek Il Sub. Baek Il Sub is such a natural. I am surprised to not see him in more shows. And Jung Gyu Woon gave such a powerful and controlled performance. I was very impressed..

LOL

Every hotelier/chebol who is perfectionist, cold & arrogant but wounded need his Candy; happy go lucky, always smiling who has 8 part time jobs & at the same time taking care of sick parents & grandparents & get conned by distant cousins/best friend.

Another chebol is too much for our wounded at heart hero tbh. Too much power play on both side. Our wounded hero can't survive that.

You're both right, if there's a female heiress in charge of her own hotel she'll be the crazy second lead obsessed with his kingship.

I should know better by now, shame on me.

They must default to Hotel related businesses because the sets are gorgeous, sexy and already...set.

It would be a lot less interesting, pretty and comfortable to film, say, in a:
home made brewery
organic dairy farm
home insulation showroom
But I would like to see them try.

by any chance, is it too much to ask for Kim Sun Ah to co-star with him on this drama? XD they made such an AMAZING couple in Scent of a Woman and the chemistry was sizzling!!

If anyone ever casts these 2 together again, I'd be over the moon :D

I'm still looking forward to this drama nonetheless :)

I am happy for this piece of news too! As JB said, LDW has been consistently solid/good (besides being absolutely delicious of course :-) ) in the modern shows. And I am still in the process to erase what I saw of him in Mandate of Heaven (wasn't sure what he intended to do there)!!

I will definitely check out this show if just to see the beautiful man in modern attire and acting all chaebol-y ;-)

This type of role definitely suits Lee Dong-wook better...and I'm glad he's considering this. Doesn't seem that much of a stretch from his role in Scent of a Woman (which I loved...and loved his chemistry with Kim Sun-ah...tango never looked so freakin hot!!).

I liked Mandate of Heaven, despite his acting...which I am hopefully attributing to the sageuk genre than his acting doing a downturn. It's a weekend drama though so I'm not being overly optimistic. Even more so because it's being written by the writer of Feast of Gods...that ended up being a crapper, even if that was like the only instance where Lee Sang-woo actually got the girl at the end!

I liked him in My Girl, when I first started watching kdramas. But that was what, 5 years ago? The acting style is something I'm bored out of my mind of already. I went back to watch my girl and was wondering why I loved it so much.

This drama hopefully has some funny side to it but I would like to see him play opposite Yoon Eun Hye. Don't want to see them in too dark, traumatic drama but upbeat, funny with a serious undertone.

Any updates whether this show will be an honest rom-com, or not?
