Kim Kang-woo’s thriller shows the dark side of tabloid news

I hope this movie is good, because the subject matter is so fascinating. Kim Kang-woo’s next project, Tabloid: Dangerous Rumor, is due out in theaters in a few weeks, and it’s about the real story behind celebrity scandals and who gets paid to release said stories at just the right time, all in an effort to turn the public’s attention away from something else.

The teaser introduces the subject of scandalous gossip, which in the Korean press is always headlined “Miss A caught doing this or that,” or “Mr. B revealed as such and such.” But the omniscient narrator tells us: “It’s not who A or B is that you should be curious about, but who made the rumors, how, and for what reason. And most importantly, why they were released.”

Kim Kang-woo stars as the manager to an actress who becomes the target of a gossip scandal. He’s thrown everything into making her a top star, but they get swept along in a full-blown scandal that eventually leads to her death. He sets out to find out where the rumor began, and in his search he comes across the true scandal-makers behind the scenes, who get paid by very powerful people to listen in on others’ lives and invent timely rumors to turn heads.

Jung Jin-young (Gift of Room 7) stars as the rumor-maker, a former journalist who now spins dangerous stories and distributes tabloid news to the highest bidder. Go Chang-seok (Covertly, Grandly) is his wire-tapping specialist, the guy in the field who gathers the breadcrumbs of truth behind each scandal. And Park Sung-woong (Psychometry) plays the enforcer who knows no mercy.

Kim Kang-woo will go up against them with dogged tenacity to find out the truth about who’s behind the scandals, and why. It seems an especially timely topic, and will hopefully give some food for thought beyond being just a fun conspiracy thriller.

Tabloid: Dangerous Rumor premieres February 20.

Now this is a movie I would watch in those Korean theaters in LA! Not only is it incredibly relevant to Korea, but I can already draw a few parallels to what's going on in the US at the moment.

You hit it on the head girlfriday! I'm praying to movie gods that they don't go a little too cray with the conspiracy-thriller aspect of the movie and let some parts of the subject matter speak for itself!

Damn! Isn't there a single movie in Chungmuro that doesn't have Jung Jin Young, Go Chang Seok and Park Sung Woong as the prominent supporting cast?! I meant it in a good way :) Especially GCS - I remember him first in small roles like "Secret Reunion", but "Hello Ghost" thrusted him into the spotlight!

But the subject is damn cool! I keep reading in translations like "Miss A", "Miss C" and "Miss M" etc were caught doing this and what nots! But I really do hope Kim Kang Woo gets a big hit. It's been a while for him since he got a decent project on the run....Fighting!

You had me at Kim Kang Woo.
Been waiting for this guys' s news forever & finally looks like his absence was for a good reason. I thinks the timing is perfect because the topic itself is very in. Inside & outside fo Korea
I fell for KKW after watching Story of a man & 2 weeks later l found myself running out of my fix because l finished his whole freakin' filmography. Not fair!

Ooooo love him in Story of a Man. After I learn that the same Director directs both Story of a Man and Gaksital, I was like imagining him playing the baddie Kimura Shunji in Gaksital. Heee.

But, nope.. Shunji belongs to Park Ki Woong :-)

I wish to see Kim Kang Woo in dramaland again playing badass role.

Love Kim Kang Woo in Story of a Man and what a fantastic group of talented supporting actors this movie has.

I'm very much interested in this movie, just not for the actors but for the story. Here is hoping it will be a hit.

Oh this is perfect. Overseas fans of Korea's entertainment business have been clued into this for about a year or so now, and it's fascinating how in postmodernity we're able to start questioning major readings of a text or situation. Celebrities being used as a cover for deeper political or economic scandals are nothing new, but I find it most interesting in Korea where everything is so fast and the netizens are particularly ruthless. Please be good!

Just like Lee Da Hae real life scandal, except she is still alive and kicking.

How timely is this! Especially considering that only two days ago, Soompi released an article describing 'Miss A - actress most hated, uncooperative', etc, etc.
Absolutely infuriating to see these vague, guess who posts, enticing hate-spewing netizens to name their favorite targets in comments.
Hope this movie really has a point with a punch.

Not to forget, some bloggers are also being paid to say something "nice" about this and that actors, actresses.

So it's the Korean 'Wag the Dog'? If it's anywhere near as good as that movie was, I'd make a lot of effort to go see it.

On that note, does anyone know of a good site for finding out where Korean movies are playing in the US?
