Ji Chang-wook and Sol Kyung-gu team up for Joseon cop comedy
by javabeans
Ji Chang-wook is on a steady upward trend, particularly with his current drama (Empress Ki) doing so well, and now he’ll add a movie to his resumé, working with an A-list director and actor duo. The movie is called Two Constables and will be a police comedy of sorts, starring Sol Kyung-gu (Tower, Spy, Haeundae, Cold Eyes) and directed by Kang Woo-seok, a man with a number of noteworthy projects to his name, many of which starred Sol (Silmido, Moss, Fist of Legend, Hanbando, and the Public Enemy series).
This will actually be the third installment in a franchise, although it’s been twenty years since Director Kang directed Two Cops (1993), which starred Ahn Sung-ki and Park Joong-hoon, and its sequel Two Cops 2 (1996), which reprised many of the same actors and characters. However, this third movie won’t be a true sequel but rather riffs off the premise, taking its story back to the Joseon era. Heh. That explains the titling difference; while the Two Cops movies used the transliterated English words, this movie uses Korean.
Two Constables will be set in a Joseon police station with Sol Kyung-gu playing an apathetic, complacent veteran officer with Ji Chang-wook as his opposite, the reckless, hot-blooded rookie. Director Kang stated that while he began work on Two Constables as the final part of the Cops series, it turned into its own thing and they changed its working title from Two Cops Zero to Two Constables to reflect the shift. Still, it aims to retain the buddy-cop comedy of the other films, and I’m thinking this pairing ought to be ripe for laughs. Sol Kyung-gu is comfortable in both dramatic and comedic roles, and while Ji Chang-wook has done more dramatic stuff lately, he has an appealing dorky charm when he gets to be light-hearted. Plus I just really enjoy goofy Joseon comedies.
I’ll be looking forward to Two Constables, though we’ll have to wait a bit; it plans to begin filming in the second half of the year for a 2015 release.

Reckless hot-blooded rookie kinda sounds like his character in empress ki. Atleast i know he'll do well in this film.
I like Ji Chang Wook and i think he's doing great in Empress Ki except for the fact that i'm not too fond of his character (i find ta-hwan adorable enough not to dislike him).
He's constantly improving with each project, except i haven't watched him in Five fingers. He was serviceable in warrior baek dong soo but he's doing good in the makjang turn of events in Empress Ki.

I didn't watch his other projects, so I was wondering why they cast such a newbie in Empress Ki. Boy, am I wrong! He's proved his acting ep by ep. I love him as the lost puppy in Joseon, as the scared, lonely, helpless emperor in the Palace, as the man-boy in love, as the man who wants to protect his empire. He holds his own against the mighty Ha JW, and that's saying a lot! Love him!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! *squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*
I was dancing around my apartment like a crazy person when I got the news on Monday. Strike while the iron is hot, babycakes!!! :D
I watched the first go-round of Director Kang's "Two Cops" at a film festival waaaaay back in 1994, and it was freakin' hilarious! So we get a 'prequel' of sorts to the trilogy -- just as long as there is no reincarnation of the characters to present-day cops, I'll be happier than a pig in slop. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!
EPIC. CAN'T WAIT. *squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*

You should work Warrior Baek Song Doo as well. It's built along Sageuk lines as well and he was the lead actor. He was brilliant in that role as well. Very, very good.

Besides Empress Ki, Bachelor vegetable store is a good start. A bit too makjang but the moments between him and his crew are the best. I couldn't finish Five Fingers so wouldn't recommend it.

He was the lead in Warrior Baek Dong Soo - very good on the Bromance lines - I believe a 30 episode historical drama.

Yea same here, I get this likeable vibe from him and i never hear about any bad acting from him so it seems like he's a decent actor. However he tends to pick projects that doesn't interest me, I couldn't stick with Warrior Baek Dong Soo, don't even remember if I got past the childhood part. I dropped Bachelor's Vegetable Store after it tricked me into thinking it wasn't a makjang, And I never even started Five Fingers because of the obvious makjang. Empress Ki is way too long and despite it's popularity with the Korean viewers, I hear the storyline's getting a bit wacky. So, Ji Changwook, pick a project I'll like!!

Tis sound so good...can't wait to see Ji Chang-wook as this type of character and more into comedy because i think he will suit him...i also hope to see him in a rom-com drama as well...ttill now his project were more into melo havy land but i'm sure he can pull the comedy part very well...hope to see him in the near feature after Empress Ki finish airing in a more light dramas and as a lead as well...hope he will pick at least once a tvN project because they have good dramas in their productions and less restrictions

i only watch him in empress ki he's good, not really interested with his another project. I'm hesitate to watch empress ki before because of long episode but i decided to watch it because of the teaser n because jjm n hjw is good in acting n it turn out to be my most addictif drama for me now. there's some flaw in latest episode but it only small portion in the whole story.

One of Empress Ki charms that got me interested def Ji Chang Wook's portrayal of Ta Hwan. He could be funny, serious, mopey and I could relate to his char. So I believe he will do well in this movie and he's experienced in sageuk.
I'm waiting for the day he become male lead in major network drama when he obviously get the girl.

Yes, he is in "The Sons of Sol Pharmacy House." He plays Mi-poong, the youngest of the four sons of the family that owns the entitled pharmacy store. This was JCW's second drama role for KBS and catapulted him to stardom due to his portrayal of a 'sissy boy' only interested in sewing and cleaning, who ends up taking care of his best friend's baby. With ratings in the 40-45% range, I think the show did rather well for itself. :D (BTW, SOSP recaps are on the DB site here as well.)
This is the drama I always suggest first to people unfamiliar with his works, and then move on to "Warrior Baek Dong Soo" afters. Going from one end of the character spectrum to another just shows you how well-advanced the acting chops have come for this boy since his debut. You won't be sorry!!!
And get well soon, Emperor Puppy!!! Fight off that nasty fever and cold!! AJA AJA AJA FIGHTING!!!

Watching this right now, although I need to finish Warrior Baek Dong Soo. Loved him in Five Fingers, as the crazy younger brother and he was the main reason for me to stick with Empress Ki. He is definitely an actor to watch, especially amongst his contemporaries.
