Han Seung-yeon headlines manhwa adaptation

Cable network SBS Plus is taking on a new short-form drama called Shoes, an adaptation of a popular manhwa classified as “women’s manhwa,” a genre of comics geared toward women about romance (the closest equivalent would be chick lit). They’re broadcasting it in an interesting way, as a 10-part miniseries that’ll go up live online as a web drama at the same time that it gets broadcast on SBS’s cable outlet. The episodes will be extremely short at ten minutes a pop, which makes it sort of a hybrid format, or more like a web series that’s getting a TV audience.

The original webtoon by Park Yoon-young is reportedly a big hit, with relatable dialogue and characters that make it popular with its largely female readership. It’s a workplace romance between a heroine who’s afraid of love and a man who doesn’t believe in love. She’s twenty-four and he’s twenty-eight, and because they work together and he’s higher up in rank, they decide to keep their relationship a secret. The heroine is a dating newbie, having been scared off by scars from her first love, but this relationship will open up a new perspective on love for both characters.

It’s described as a sweet heart-pounding romance, which sounds cute. Idol star Han Seung-yeon will headline as the heroine, and the hero has yet to be cast. She was in Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love, but I didn’t keep up with that drama so I have no idea if she can act. I guess at 10-minute episodes, it’s not a huge risk, but hopefully she’s got some potential. Directing are PD Ahn Gil-ho, who worked on both Rooftop Prince and Wonderful Mama, and PD Min Yeon-hong of the daily drama Watch Out For Fools.

Shoes will start shooting later this month and premieres February 24.

Yay, more minidramas, although ten minutes feels a bit too short.

Interesting casting choice! I watched Seungyeon briefly in the beginning episodes of Jang Ok-Jung; she was fine when the role wasn't too demanding, and she had a kind of effortless charm about her. The character in this manhwa sounds like the kind of simple, sweet girl Seungyeon should be able to pull off without too much trouble, as long as she doesn't feel the urge to overact.

What happened to the KARA based drama that was suppose to broadcast last year? Was it cancelled due to their news of a possible break up?

I think it's safe to assume the drama has been scraped. KARA has not disbanded, but two of the original members left.

It was pre-produced, it just never found a timeslot last year and now Kara as a five member group are over, it'll probably never see the light of day on korean tv. Maybe it'll go straight to dvd in Japan or something?

Gotta be honest, my first thought was "Omg, no." Saw her in JOJ and her acting was so embarrassing to watch. I mainly gave up watching because of her. But I'll decide whether or not to watch this after seeing who'll be cast as her hero. Maybe she improved, who knows.

I think he's not bad in Jang Ok Jung but her charracter not really difficult, it's safe charracter doesn't need good acting

She played a sneaky, conniving character in JOJ so there wasn't much to love about her character. It was her first sageuk role so she looked as green as can be next to her co-stars (yes, even kim tae hee who i thought did her best performance in this drama). Didn't finish it when it veered into crazy (really, really crazy) makjang territory, but from the bit that i did see Han Seung Yeon, she was mostly underwhelming even if she got that evil glare down pat. But i cut her some slack since it's her first sageuk role, and it's not everybody's forte.

Word @ sageuk not being everybody's forte. Song Ji Hyo can't act for squat in sageuk but she looks cute and serviceable in her new drama, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and give Han Seung Yeon the benefit of the doubt.

Ten minutes are very short, that's like a commercial these days. But maybe for the better, if it's bad you won't kill yourself about it...

Seriously, watching episodes would be like watching those extended-length commercials from Thailand and wherever else. Which are awesome, but I don't know how this would work for a drama where you actually need to have plot happen in those ten minutes AND it has to be overarching across the ten episodes.

But then again, 10 ten-minute episodes = 100 minutes, which means it's about the length of a movie if they film it at one go? So why not just film a movie? I doubt I'd have the patience to wait all week for a new episode, and I honestly couldn't imagine watching this on television - it'd be like, blink and you'd miss important plot stuff right away. Because this format really leaves no room for filler...

I'm not hating on this, I'm just really confused by how this is going to work! Well, I'm sure most, if not all of us, have watched at least one drama of the can-I-have-my-hours-back-now variety, so props for being much shorter. (And hopefully, sweeter.)

fyi dramabeans, it seem you not that familiar with manhwa world ...there are no "Woman's Manhwa" as genre that "Woman's Manhwa" is title for this Manhwa, they used it on the net by manga/manhwa scanlation site, , 여자만화 구두 is the real title of this manhwa, they don't call this manhwa as 구두 only or "Shoes"
and the english title is "Her Lovely Heels"

Apparently there IS a subset of 순정만화 that is called 여자만화 or also 여성만화, or so the internet tells me. But if this drama is actually called Woman's Comic Shoes, then HA.

She wasn't good in JoJ, but she gets too much blame for the drama's quality taking a nose dive. She was totally miscast in the role, but the writing was the main problem.

This probably won't be that challenging or demanding for her. A decent way to get experience I'd say.

She was terribly miscasted in JOJ. Didn't look the part, couldn't act the part. Maybe this role of a modern young woman will suit her better idk.

I think seungyeon will do great in this drama. I didn't expect the episodes to be that short but she has potential esp when starting out with roles like this which is similar to her actual personality. I can't wait!
