Go Soo re-teams with Han Hyo-joo for experimental art film
by javabeans
Go Soo (Empire of Gold) must be on a short film kick: He has already signed on to one co-starring Moon Chae-won called The Day Min-woo Arrives, and now he’s adding another one to his schedule. It’s titled View of Mount Myohyang and he’ll be re-teaming with Han Hyo-joo, with whom he starred in the movie Bandage in 2012.
The project is an art film, and both Go Soo and Han Hyo-joo will be doing the project for free. The short tells the love story between a South Korean artist and a North Korean restaurant worker (Mount Myohyang is a mountain in North Korea). Go Soo is the artist who comes to the restaurant run by North Koreans, and the film explores not only their romance but also a discussion about art through its experimental format, incorporating “theater-like acting,” modern dance, and performance art.
This kind of thing is so completely not my bag (I have long passed the point of trying to “get” art films and have just accepted that I won’t, and I’m really okay with that), but I do think it’s a positive thing to get commercial actors working with creative minds from a different branch of the art world, trying a different take on artistic expression. It’s only a short film so it’s not a huge commitment, but it’s a way to expand one’s horizons and that can’t be bad.
Directing the film are two artists, Moon Kyung-won and Jung Jun-ho; in 2012 they collaborated with Lee Jung-jae and Im Soo-jung in a different project called The Other Side of the World, which was invited to the Documenta exhibition for contemporary art in Kassel, Germany. View of Mount Myohyang will begin filming in February and aims to be screened at various international short film festivals.

"I have long passed the point of trying to “get” art films and have just accepted that I won’t, and I’m really okay with that"
Yep, yep, yep, SO MUCH. I tried hard and I'm done trying. I'm watching dramas and movies that float my boat.

Ooh, artsy films! I think I'll enjoy it. I like to believe that you don't have to "get" it, but just enjoy the ride. Thinking to much won't get you anywhere. :)

Is Han hyo joo a good actress now? I remember watching her in dramas and she was not a good actress and then all of a sudden she's exclusively doing movies like she's a talented movie star. I have not watched any of her movies. Has she grown as an actress?

Did she? I remember her getting Best Actress at the Blue Dragon Awards for Cold Eyes, and response from international as well as K-netizens was overwhelmingly unenthusiastic.
I haven't seen her in anything yet, so I can't judge, but she seems to usually elicit 'decent/passable-but-not-great'-type comments on her acting; however, I really like her personality on variety shows/interviews.

I find Han Hyo Joo boring. Although I liked Brilliant Legacy, I don't think it was her acting that made it. Also, I didn't like how she kept saying she didn't like that Lee Seung Gi crushed her nose in the kiss scene in interviews, like he was responsible for the whole thing. How about the director's role or better yet, her - since it takes 2 to kiss.

Yeah. I can feel her acting improved a lot in Cold Eyes and one of her fans who think she deserves the blue dragon award.

There's thing about Han Hyo Joo....she's not the best actress out there, but not the worst....I usually don't like watching mediocre but for some reason, I always end up watching whatever she's in...I think she just has an endearing quality about her, that almost makes you want to watch her on screen despite not being a stellar actress....
Anyway, I think she has improved over the years - she did good in Bandage, though it was an easy rom com...I have not seen her in Cold Eyes but heard she got accolades so should be good!
