Bickering and sparks in Emergency Couple

I really like the teasers for tvN’s upcoming workplace rom-com Emergency Couple, the first of what will probably be many married-divorced-reunited pairings in 2014. This show is clear from the get-go that the bickering we’ve seen in other rom-coms is just child’s play compared to the war of petty that’s about to go down between these two. I already like both Song Ji-hyo and Choi Jin-hyuk, but as gleefully impish exes, they’re extra fun.

The 20-episode series will air on Fridays and Saturdays, and is a hospital-set workplace drama. That’s two strikes against it in my book, so it’ll be up to the chemistry between the leads to liven things up and make me want to tune in. Song Ji-hyo and Choi Jin-hyuk play a couple who married in their early twenties (her character is three years older than he is), against his family’s wishes. He comes from a hoity-toity family of all doctors who basically snubbed her for not being good enough, which left them cut off from his money.

He gave up his dream to be a doctor so that he could earn money right away with a salaried desk job, but hated every second of it. Meanwhile she struggled to find work, leading to an even bigger inferiority complex. They fought constantly and eventually got a divorce. Six years later, he’s gone back to med school to pursue his dream, while she put her nose to the grindstone to make it through med school when everyone told her she could never amount to anything. And of course, they end up interns at the same hospital, where they’ll have to work in the emergency room together for a whole year.

All the promo stuff comes with exasperated taglines like: “Just when I thought it was over, Round 2 begins…” “Tell me this is a nightmare,” and “Why?! If I knew he’d be here, I’d run as far as ten laps around the Earth!” Hopefully the cheeky teasers will translate into romantic comedy sparks.

Seems like a drama I should enjoy :)
As long as there is as much humour as the teasers promise and the characters aren't withering flowers, creepy murderers or plain idiots, I am in. INR3 is gloomier than I expected, so maybe this one will bring the fun that I've been waiting for?

I don't get how divorced couples can be romantic or funny. Is it a korean thing? Does anyone have a good example of a good couple in that situation? It can be from any movie/drama even westerns. I like CJH but for me it seems like another romcom difficult to like because the setup is so unreal or just depressing.

Your comment totally reminds me of Can't Lose by Choi Ji Woo and Yoonie. It's supposed to be a rom-com featuring a divorcing--divorced couple. It wasn't at all funny, and was a flop despite the big names. Why anyone would think that divorce is funny is beyond me too.

The drama it was based on, though was really good and WAS funny, 'cause it went over the eccentricities of the characters in that way that Japanese do best. I vote that one the better of the two.

Three words: Kiss Me, Kate.

It's a similar story to this one, albeit in the theatrical rather than medical sphere. They marry young and split up while they're struggling to make ends meet. Years later, they're forced to work together while playing the leads in 'Taming of the Shrew'. Cue hilarious hijinks and Olympic-level sniping before they admit they never really got over each other and reunite. One of my all-time favourite movies. :)

I'm quite intrigued with this one. Perhaps it will fill my post-PM&I rom-com void in a couple of weeks' time...

Kiss me Kate really is a good one and I'd also recommend movies 'It's Complicated' and 'Crazy, Stupid Love'. Crazy, Stupid Love is not strictly speaking about a divorce but well close enough and enjoyable :)

I see your point but at the same time re-marriage is a bit of a favorite trope of mine in that it tackles the question of what happen in the "happily ever after". I mean it's a romantic lovely ride into the sunset, but then what? So I like the idea of a couple falling in love, getting married, then realizing that perhaps all that manic floating on cloud 9 love is not enough, separated, then find their way back to each other again with all the wisdom that love really is not enough to make a marriage work and thus elevating their feelings toward another level.

Planet Kdrama, of course. American movies and TV shows used to do this if the leading man was a lot taller than the leading lady. Two of my favorite Oldies with this issue were Remington Steele (Peirce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist) and Hunter (Fred Dryer and Stephanie Kramer). Both women wound up doing many action scenes in high heels, and managed to look graceful doing it.

Too bad they can't release a teaser every day until it premieres. Those above are awesome and they become my new favorite couple before the show ever begins.

I doubt she'd drop RM because of taping schedules. She did Mandate of Heaven while filming RM. And even if there were a scheduling conflict, they'd just film without her, more than likely bringing a girl group in. Like the time I think she was sick and they brought Girl's Generation on the show.

When I think of the hospital in this setup, I'm reminded of Scrubs which is the only medical drama *snerk* I can handle. I wish this would start right now, I need something to look forward to on Fridays and Saturdays.

I had not yet read the synopsis and with it I'm super excited about this. I actually agree with the poster who said divorce isn't funny but if the plot is more about reconciliation then I think it could be pretty interesting and funny in a sort of ironic way. Laughing though the pain or something?

I will watch the drama because I like a majority of the cast excluding Song Ji-Hyo, in my opinion she's not a good actress and her antics to act mean, bitter, and funny are annoying. I wish they would cast Choi Jin-Hyuk with Choi Yeo-Jin.

ㅋㅋㅋ I think that those promos have gotten me to bite. I love both Choi Jin Hyuk and Song Ji Hyo...but yeah...I am not a huge fan of the doctor/workplace combo. But hey, for Choi Jin Hyuk I am willing to give it a try.

Already saw most of these, but it was even better to watch it again! I am so excited to watch this next week and hope it lives up to expectations.

I love Song Ji-hyo and really like Choi Jin-hyuk so I hope this works out for both. I wish we saw more interaction between them during his running man episode but teamwise, it didn't work out that way.

SJH's character seems more feistier than she usually plays, more like her naturally awesome self, and I think that'll be enjoyable.

LOL I love the fashion these med interns have, they must be treated reaaaaally well by their higher ups and have little work to do. She would never last in those heels at the hospital I'm currently doing my fourth year med school service at... our poor interns are run ragged ESPECIALLY those interning in the ER. Most girls try to look clean at most but forget heels and nice make up! The best they can hope for is to remember their lipgloss and to wash their faces.

I'm worried at the premise of bickering divorced couple.

Think of the black comedy movie War of the Roses with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner where they do escalatingly worse things to each other. I happened to see that film with my ex-husband on a date we had when we were thinking of reuniting. We both looked at each other after the end of the movie like "Could we have picked a worse film to see?" Hahaha

To this day, I don't find divorced people arguing to be something worth joking about. (shudder)

If divorced-remarried is a theme this year, I'm in for a dry Kdrama patch.
