Promo stills from the set of Age of Feeling
by javabeans
I remain cautiously optimistic about Age of Feeling, which has yet to release a preview but at least looks lovely in the stills that have been released thus far. I don’t know how accurate the period fashions are to 1930s Shanghai, but while I’m sure there are bound to be discrepancies, I’m less concerned about getting every detail correct and more interested in how they’re capturing the overall feel of the era. Glamorous, romantic, a little mysterious — let’s hope the drama can capitalize on that ambiance.
The first few sets of stills feature our tough-guy hero, Kim Hyun-joong, as well as his two love interests Im Soo-hyang (dressed in kimono) and Jin Se-yeon (dolled up as her singer character). I’m still waiting to get my first look at Kim Jae-wook, but rest assured I’ll be the first to share when those are finally released.
Kim Gab-soo, pictured below practicing with his kendo sword, takes on the villain’s role here, which should be right up his alley — he’s got such a nuanced, multi-layered approach to his characters that makes them interesting even when they’re written one-dimensionally. Lots of drama villains tend to flatten out the more villainous they become, but I have faith that Kim Gab-soo will remain complex and intriguing through the end. He’ll play a powerful yakuza with connections in a number of power circles — politics, the military, and the financial world, among others.
As you can see in the photo collage at the bottom, Age of Feeling has a pretty large cast of supporting characters, many of whom are acting veterans who’ll be familiar faces to drama-watchers: Kim Roi-ha, Park Chul-min, Jung Ho-bin, Choi Il-hwa, and Kim Sung-oh, among others. The drama will premiere on January 15 as a Wednesday-Thursday drama on KBS.

I love Kim Jae-Wook and Kim Hyun-Joong, but this historical drama has just seemed cursed. I am cautiously waiting on the side lines for other Beanies to tell me it is great before I dip my toes in.

Jin Se-yeon would sell her role a lot better for the publicity shots if she acted and posed a bit instead of always doing her perky school girl Selca look.

I am looking forward to this, but still quietly mourning that earlier drama that was cancelled ahead of time for being too violent...if this is good, though, I think I will be able to forget.

City Conquest (I think).
I still dont understand how producers thought it was too violent when it going to air around the same time as iris 2..

Has anyone every done a body count for the Iris/Athena series? I think a number of nations have fought full-scale wars that killed fewer people than those three dramas.

City Conquest was cancelled not because it's too violent but because there is some kind of political game going on behind the scene.

Love Kim Gab-soo, great actor. I really hope this will be the break out role for Kim Hyun-joong. I'm not a fan (yet) but he is just so darn likeable.

Agree! So handsome and likeable.
It seems to me like he could make a solid career in the same way Dwayne Johnson has. At the beginning of his career he was also widely criticized for his acting. But he knew what roles suited him and kept plugging away. Fast forward to this year, when his projects have brought in the highest (aggregate) box office receipts of any actor in Hollywood.

I am also watching for Jinjung Soo!
Doesn't look like he gets as much wardrobe freedom in this role compared to HC, though.

"Doesn’t look like he gets as much wardrobe freedom in this role compared to HC, though."
I read that as:
"He wouldn't have butt-hugging white pants in this role."
I am sad.

Jin Se-yeon has always been so bland onscreen that I pretty much forget her face the minute I turn off the episode, so I don't have much hope for the love interest part of this. But Kim Jae-wook.......WHY do you keep doing this, making me check out dramas that I would never even touch if it weren't for you?

A lollipop. That's about all Jin Se-yeon can manage, from what I've seen of her thus far.
As sultry cafe entertainers living on the decadent edge of society go, I would rank her just slightly less perky than the cast of 'Where's Daddy?'

Female costumes and accessories look too modern in detail... fail sets in already.

I'm really impressed seeing how much the younger counterparts resemble the three leads! Usually the kids have little to no resemblance to their adult counterparts.
Looking forward to this - KHJ has been gearing up for this type of character forever, so crossing fingers for a breakout performance from him.

I am not a fan of film noir or a fan of this particular era in history. However I will watch because I want to see Kim Jung hyun play a big boy role. I love his new grown up look. He is all kinds of hot now. I do think it's a shame that it appears Kim Jae wook has been determined to be unworthy of a leading man role. I suppose it's his fate like so many other handsome and capable actors to forever play 2nd since we have yet to see him do otherwise. This is one of the things I find most frustrating about Kdrama. Of course many an actor has had long and lauded careers playing characters, side kicks and rejected lovers. But in Korea you really see this quite a bit. Many of these guys are very good and often take a 2nd to idol actors and whoever is the man of the moment regardless of talent. Oh well if you watch Kdramas these are things that you have to accept.

I'm sure Kim Jae-wook will get his turn as the hero soon enough. I've seen him in only a few things, but he was great in everything. I didn't watch Who Are You? but from what I've heard he was fantastic. So, I'm sure someone, sometime, will recognize his skills and ask him to play the hero.
I have noticed that there are less-skilled actors playing heroes next to much-more skilled second leads. And you're right, that has a lot to do with who's hot at the moment, or if there is an idol actor in the mix. It is frustrating, when many idol-actors are terrible (with some exceptions of course). But that's just a part in dramaland, I guess.

Ugh, with him and Kim Jae Wook, I must checking this drama now. Why Kim Jae Wook still a second lead. I hope this one can be his breakout into first lead territory.

From a Japanese perspective that kimono and hairstyle looks soooo off. I have a soft spot for KHJ but I don't think I can watch this. Watching Korean actors playing Japanese characters make me cringe more than the California scenes in Heirs.

These stills look fantastic, so I'm looking forward to this a lot! Plus, it doesn't hurt that my oppa is in it (KHJ)! :)
But there really are a lot of characters. I'm usually pretty good with ensemble casts, at the very least knowing the character names, but still, whoa! There's a lot!
Looking forward to this!
