Prime Minister and I: Episode 6

It’s the holiday season for Prime Minister and I, a time where even the biggest Scrooge can pray for a Christmas miracle. We learn some unexpected truths in this hour, and our heroine continues to be her optimistic and caring self, as always. Moreover, we get to dig into the reasons behind the children’s bitterness towards their stern and disciplined father, who realizes that it takes more than a daily log to get to know his children. ‘Tis the season for Yul to learn that perhaps being the best father he can be is the best Christmas gift of all.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

So our married couple spends their first night together with Yul staying up to work while Da-jung sleeps. The following morning, Da-jung encourages a reluctant Man-se to attend kindergarten. She promises him a playdate, but a stern word from his father gets him to grudgingly head off to school.

Calling her a worry (geok-jung), Yul sighs in exasperation and removes a note attached to Da-jung’s back (another one of Na-ra’s pranks). He tells her to stay out of trouble since worrying about national affairs gives him enough of a headache and to stop wearing the hanbok.

He also assigns her to keep a daily log on his children—their thoughts, concerns, behaviors, and so on. Pfft, how fitting for him to take the systematic approach to get to know his children. Da-jung gapes, “Five pages each?!”

Madam Na is elated at her son’s top grades and even more happy to hear that he beat Cousin Woo-ri. The same can’t be said of Joon-ki, who gives his son a lukewarm congratulations for placing first in the school, and the boy noticeably deflates.

At the office, the mention of In-ho’s name prompts Yul to ask if Hye-joo knows anything about In-ho’s personal life—his hobbies, family background, or you know, if he’s dating. She doesn’t and he sets the matter aside.

He is, however, alarmed to hear that Da-jung has been called out to a meeting with the other politician wives’. And rightly so, as the gathering is just an opportunity for Da-jung to be publicly humiliated by Madam Na, who sneers at their new president’s frugality and her tabloid reporter background.

At least Da-jung attempts to use her new authority for good and opposes the idea of holding a luxury bazaar when all of their husbands are government officials. Suffice it to say, it doesn’t go over very well, and she’s left to foot the exorbitant bill.

Madam Na confronts Da-jung once they’re alone, fully ready to receive an apology for yesterday. She isn’t happy with Da-jung’s simple apology and flashes the scandalous photo, then chucks a glass of water at her face.

Just then, Hye-joo bursts into the room and demands that Madam Na apologize to Da-jung immediately. Though she’s here on Yul’s orders, her mere presence riles up Madam Na’s temper, and she scoffs at the assumption of her romantic involvement with Joon-ki.

That only spurs Madam Na’s rage, but when she raises a hand to strike, Hye-joo twists her arm and throws her to the ground. Then she throws down the check for Madam Na to pay, and storms out like a boss.

Hye-joo lectures Da-jung for meeting with those chaebol vultures on her own on their way out. She’s upset to hear that Da-jung has stirred trouble yet again and begs her not to be a nuisance to the prime minister.

She then walks off and sees In-ho moments later… talking with Joon-ki’s secretary. Hmm.

Being referred to as a nuisance leaves Da-jung in a dejected mood, but she slaps on a smile in front of Yul, who orders her to follow him outside.

Little does she know that Yul has already heard about today’s events, and he engages her in kendo practice. He scolds her whenever she instinctively retreats from his attacks, but what angers Yul most is how Da-jung allowed herself to be made a fool of in front of those women.

He tells her to fight back if hearing that makes her angry, so Da-jung charges at him and fails. “Victory isn’t what’s most important in a battle,” Yul tells her. “Rather it’s to defend yourself even if you lose.”

He asks if what happened today doesn’t anger her, to which Da-jung counters that he should help her out then. He delivers another blow that causes the wooden sword to fly out her hands while telling her that she needs to find the answer herself, in her own way.

In-ho joins Hye-joo in the video surveillance room; the latter is still suspicious about his activities today, but he comes right out with it and says he coincidentally ran into Joon-ki’s secretary, Secretary Bae, whom he used to work with.

In-ho meets with Da-jung later, who remarks that Dad told her about how he ran into In-ho at the hospital. To that, In-ho admits that his hyung is there due to a car accident that occurred seven years ago. Oof, was it the same one with Yul’s first wife?

His eyes well up with tears as he recounts how hyung used to always win against him at chess, and he hoped there would come a day when he would win. Da-jung gives him an encouraging smile and says she believes that miracles happen—so his brother will wake up one day, and her father will get better, too.

In-ho smiles at that, and then musters up the courage to ask if Da-jung likes the prime minister. She sputters in response.

But In-ho gets asked if he likes Da-jung later on, as Yul explains that he saw In-ho hugging her the other day. In-ho replies that he was merely trying to comfort her; moreover, he doesn’t have the time to harbor feelings for anyone when he has other matters to take care of.

Naturally that prompts Yul to ask what those are, and is told that he’ll be informed in due time. Yul lets the matter drop for now, but reminds In-ho to be wary of prying eyes around Da-jung, since he doesn’t want In-ho’s name to get caught up in this mess.

Hye-joo worries that Yul is working himself to the ground again with year-end deadlines. Yul dismisses her concern, and then gets a call from Woo-ri’s teacher.

Da-jung tries to shake the question of whether she likes Yul out of her mind. She gasps at Woo-ri’s messy room, but discovers a concert poster for his band, of which he’s the lead singer. Aw, cute.

She decides to leave that part out of her report for Yul and wonders what his bottle of meds are for. But before she can dwell on it, she’s called in to Man-se’s school.

Da-jung is told that he neither plays with the other kids nor practices for the holiday festival, where all the children’s parents will be in attendance. When her attempts to coax him with snacks don’t work, she offers to piggyback him.

She uses that opportunity to ask Man-se if he didn’t mention the upcoming festival because he was afraid his father wouldn’t come. She sweetly says that they’re all planning to attend as a family, but Man-se retorts that Daddy never came to see his siblings’ performances either.

He does brighten at the idea that his father will go if given an invitation, but of course Yul turns it down, citing that he’s too busy. Then Yul turns his attention to his eldest son Woo-ri, who trails behind his father with a black eye and busted lip.

Woo-ri merely scoffs at his father’s sudden interest in his life, but he admits that he hit his cousin for making a remark about his new young stepmother. But that’s not all—he was just angry and pissed off.

He finishes, “Should I be even more honest? I hit him because I was angry at you! It’s because of you!”

Near tears, Woo-ri tears into his father, saying that he’s never forgotten about his mother since her car accident seven years ago, whereas Dad must have since he got remarried. Da-jung overhears the conversation just outside the door.

Madam Na snaps at Joon-ki for supposedly taking his nephew’s side in the matter, asking if he would actually give a care if Hyun-seo was his birth son. What in the what now?

But Joon-ki turns to remind her that her father had asked him before they were married to regard Hyeon-seo as his own son and never bring up the matter. He’s kept that promise, but it was always her who used that fact like a weapon against him.

Yul returns to the bedroom where Da-jung is busy making Man-se’ Christmas present. She rises in alarm to see him look unwell. He claims that it’s just a headache, but she wonders if he’s suffering from indigestion.

So she brandishes a needle, ready to prick his finger as Yul hilariously cowers at her approach. She manages to get him to sit on the bed, and I love at how she comments on his toned body as she rubs his arm to get his blood circulation going.

He asks if he’s an awful of a father as she once said, to which Da-jung answers that he’s a busy father who doesn’t know what to do for his kids. She tells him that he should at least give little Man-se plenty of hugs because he’s still young.

As Da-jung pricks his thumb with the needle, she explains that even though it initially hurts to deal with a wound, it’s the fastest way to get better. She finds it strange that Yul’s blood looks too red, and then wonders: “Was it not indigestion?” Yul: “I told you it was a headache!” HA.

Yul checks in on each of his sleeping children in turn while reflecting upon Da-jung’s words, and picks up the invitation to Man-se’s school festival.

Da-jung pays a visit to her father on her own, and he asks if there’s more Christmas surprises in store like, say, future grandkids because he’s getting sympathy morning sickness. It’s both sad and funny since his nausea is actually a side effect of his medical treatment, but Da-jung shushes him in case someone overhears them.

That’s when Dad points out another patient and identifies him as In-ho’s hyung. Oh, is he awake now?

Then Da-jung is off to her political wives’ meeting (at a Subway!), where she declares that they’ll be assembling 50 dolls each for disabled children. I love the looks of astonishment on the women’s faces.

She has another surprise for them as well, as their hard work for charity will be in the papers. Cue the Scandal News team and Reporter Byun, and the political wives are forced to smile for the cameras.

After Yul is informed about his day, he asks if they can rearrange his schedule to leave his evening free to attend Man-se’s festival. He tells Hye-joo that Da-jung will be taking care of the children’s Christmas gifts this year so that she doesn’t have to.

In fact, he wonders if he’s depending too much on Hye-joo to the point where it affects her decision-making abilities. Hye-joo readily defends that that isn’t the case, but can’t bring herself to say why. Yul apologizes and thanks her for her efforts, promising to make sure not to burden her in the future.

Little Man-se does the cutest little happy dance to hear that Daddy will come see him perform after all, and practices with gusto. Na-ra, however, sheds angry and bitter tears at the news.

Da-jung goes Christmas shopping on her own for the kids. She considers a guitar for Woori, but gasps at the expressive price tag, settling on a nice guitar belt instead. Yul later finds her passed on the bed with her half-made frog doll, so he stays up to finish sewing it.

She wakes the following morning to find the completed doll and admires Yul’s sewing skills.

Da-jung then joins Woo-ri and Na-ra, both of whom refuse to attend their brother’s school festival. She gets Na-ra’s attention with the hint of a totally, awesome present, and then dangles the fact that Woo-ri is in a band like a blackmailing carrot.

I love how Woo-ri’s like, “Is that a threat?” and Da-jung is all, You bet it is. Ha, points for knowing how to get through to these kids.

Yul calls just then to inform Da-jung that something urgent came up; he’ll do his best to make it in time, but can’t make any guarantees. Da-jung panics at that, and instructs the housekeeper to take the kids to the school first.

Interestingly, we see Woo-ri sneak away to call… his uncle Joon-ki? Wait, are you the spy?

Unfortunately Joon-ki is busy having dinner with his wife and father-in-law (why hello there Lee Deok-hwa), the latter of whom asks about the environmentalist project he’s backing. Joon-ki replies that he has it covered.

His father-in-law warns that he better because he’s groomed Joon-ki to protect his wealth like a guard dog. Joon-ki replies that dogs only know one master, but he isn’t someone who can do that. He adds the thinly veiled warning that his father-in-law should be on his guard because even trained dogs can bite their master.

Yul is invited to join the president for dinner after their meeting, and thankfully Yul declines on account to keep his promise to his son. The president sends him off in high spirits since it’s Christmas Eve, and Da-jung arrives moments later to collect him.

With less than 20 minutes until the performance, Yul and Da-jung are stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. She gripes at his stubborn refusal to use his diplomatic advantage to clear the roads at a time like this. That’s not much of an option either since it’s rush hour, so In-ho suggests another way.

Next thing we know, Yul’s staff paves a way through the subway station and crowded car. Their fellow passengers snaps photos left and right, astonished to see the dignitary riding public transportation.

Unfortunately for them, they miss their designated stop when Da-jung tries to retrieve their heel. They start bickering per usual, and In-ho warns through gritted teeth that now’s not the time to place blame when they’re in the public eye.

Meanwhile the last musical number comes ’round, and Na-ra starts to worry that Daddy won’t be able to make it. It’s sweet that her voice sounds a bit hopeful despite her usual cynical attitude.

Yul and Da-jung’s seats are still empty when Man-se walks on stage. Head hanging, he calls them both liars and starts crying. Aw, kiddo.

But that’s when Yul and Da-jung finally arrive and (attempt to) quietly take their seats. Man-se wipes his tears and starts dancing, as Yul watches him with a proud smile.

And if this scene couldn’t be more adorable than it already is, it just did because after the show, Man-se runs to give his father a hug. I’m not crying; I’ve just been cutting onions.

Joon-ki drops by his alma mater to visit an old haunt, unaware that Hye-joo is also in the vicinity. He picks up a guitar and as he plays (is that the Autumn Story soundtrack?), he thinks back to when he first met Hye-joo.

She had called Joon-ki sunbae because she was determined to enroll in this same university. He had humored her and called her hoobae in return.

Joon-ki takes a stroll outside where he runs into Hye-joo. It starts to snow just then, and he calls it an unexpected present. Ack, the music seems to suggest some kind of Christmas miracle happening. Joon-ki, I know you’re in an unhappy marriage and all, but that does not negate the fact that you are married.

The music turns festive as we watch our characters open their Christmas gifts: Man-se hugs his frog doll, Na-ra is giddy at her CD, and even the housekeeper smiles at her new apron. Aw, Da-jung gifts In-ho with a chess set, and Woo-ri lets out a troubled sigh at his gift. Pangs of guilt, perhaps?

Yul asks why he hasn’t received his gift yet, and she points out that he didn’t prepare one for her either. But she does present him with… a book? I’m all for reading, but I definitely had a different idea in my head.

He points out that this copy of “One Thousand and One Nights” is from his library, to which Da-jung says yes, but her present is to read it aloud to him at night. That’s cute. Given how Yul stays up most nights working, she guesses that he suffers from insomnia and stresses the importance of a good night’s rest.

Yul teases that he doesn’t particularly like the gift, but Da-jung instructs him to come over beside her on the bed. She starts reading, and I’ll laugh if he actually falls asleep to the sound of her voice.

He does, or rather he’s resting his eyes and tells Da-jung to keep reading. He opens his eyes to see her dozing off and smiles. Gah, you’re so smitten and you don’t even know it yet!

He carefully takes the book out of her hands and reads a passage to himself:

“When I could not be rid of my resentment and unhappiness
and my rage could not be stopped with ruthlessness
She was the one who rescued me,
the one who came to find me when I couldn’t sleep… ”

At that moment Da-jung’s head falls on his shoulder. As he looks at her, he reads on, “…my Scheherazade.”

COMMENTS

What a wonderful Christmas surprise and a sweet allegory that ties into this series. In fact, I’m impressed with how Prime Minister handles its pacing, in both its setups and quick payoffs. It’s refreshing to watch characters confront each other with conflicts that were brought up in the previous episode, which keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. It’s a mark of clever writing as well, as we see the minute details incorporated into the narrative, acting as plot devices to highlight our character relationships. For instance, it cracked me up that the writers kept in the Kang Ho-dong scandal joke; through that, we were given a hint about Madam Na’s past, which we now know that Joon-ki isn’t their son’s birth father.

Speaking of Joon-ki, he runs a fine line between suspicion and sympathy with me every episode. There are times where his ambition and vengeance makes him an interesting character, especially when he tells his father-in-law that he’s no dog that serves one master. Then I see him with Hye-joo, whom I believe he does have lingering feelings for. There’s still a chance of redemption for him if he removes the grudge against Yul, but we know that at this point, that battle will continue.

Da-jung’s interactions with Yul’s three children were a particular highlight in this episode. I’m glad that we got to know more about Woo-ri this hour, along with his adolescent angst and grief. I was surprised to find how aware he was that his anger towards Dad is the source of his aggressive behavior, and his outburst was full of pain and resentment, which Oof. Now that Da-jung knows about his band (please, oh please Drama, can we hear him sing?) I can’t wait to watch how this relationship develops, and how Da-jung will continue to challenge Yul how important it is for him to be there for his son’s teenage years.

Man, I’m so relieved that Yul’s meds turned out to be sleeping aids, because if I had a nickel for every time dramaland has taught me that pills = fatal sickness, I’d have a whole jar of ’em. Like before, I appreciated how the story used that minor detail to later highlight his insomnia, and that allowed Da-jung to take care of him for once, minus the indigestion misunderstanding, ’cause let’s face it—that was hilarious.

I can’t say this enough: I love the little things that Yul and Da-jung do for each other. Just like how Yul quietly finishes sewing Man-se’s Christmas gift or how Da-jung steps up to take care of everyone’s Christmas gifts at the estate. Or how she offers to read to him every night in order to help him sleep. These small, sweet gestures are what grab me at the end of the day, as they continue to be fantastic examples of what it means to love someone (and they don’t even know that they’re in love yet. That part just kills me.); to show that love is more than just a feeling, and it’s in the words we speak and actions we do for our loved ones. So she may end up telling him a story for one thousand and one nights… or for the rest of their lives.

This drama is a breath of fresh air, which was needed for this year. Thanks to the writers for being human and allowing it to show. The subbers are the BEST and should be congratulated by all of us. I am happy for the match since I love the prime minister in any drama he's in. He is always great.

That it was Arabian Nights was my biggest squee moment of the entire episode! It gives us something to hang our hopes on.

The essence of the story is that a Sultan was cheated on by his main wife and he was heartbroken. This makes him turn cold. He marries a new woman each day and has her executed the next, before she can cause him pain.

(Dare I say a metaphor for Yul and his feelings?)

However, one new bride - Scheherazade - has a plan. On the night of their wedding she begins to tell him a story that leaves him wanting to hear how it ends. So he leaves her alive until the next night. Every night she finishes last nights story and begins a new one that keeps him wanting more. Finally, 1001 nights later, he decides that she should remain at his side forever.

So we see Yul wanting to read more. He's looking at Da Jung - who's asleep on his shoulder in bed - and essentially calls her "my Scheherazade" .....squeeeeeeeee!

Is the drama, then, saying that its theme is more 'Arabian Nights' than 'Sound of Music? It makes me think if his wife was having an affair.

Seems to me that the main framework is the sound of Music. But the writer is also deftly weaving in a lot of other classics. In the comments I've seen comparisons to:

Pride and Prejudice (Yul is like Darcy)
Pygmalion (De Jung's transformation)
I Love Lucy (for how the madcap comedy is done)

Now add Arabian Nights (how she draws out emotions he's kept locked away, mends his trust and restores his broken heart)

I'm sure there were others that I didn't see.

I'll like to add in the fairy tales of the Frog Prince, courtsey of all those frogs...i think right now Yul's behaving like a toad (as in yelling at her alot), hopefully by the end of the show (and with lots more kissing especially since Yul seems to be an expert in that subject) Da jeon will get her prince!

the show did also allude to Cinderella in the earlier episodes...

0

Good catch!

I've never seen the frog prince (just know it's an animated movie). What's the basic storyline?

0

Agree with you about the affair.

Oh Yulie. Poor baby. :-(

This was what I was thinking.

And maybe In-ho is by Yul's side, not for revenge, but to sort of pay back his hyung's transgressions by making sure Yul learns to move on from his scarred marriage?

0

I would hope that if the affair was with In-Ho bro then their is no misunderstanding and In-Ho is there to harm the PM. I kind like In-Ho!

Then I wonder why PM's bro-in-law is mad at him? Was he too busy to pay attention to his wife? Hence the affair?

0

Too busy to pay attention. From what we've seen, probably.

Why he's mad. If there was an affair he may not have known about it. He may have only known she was lonely.

If you watch the scene showing the accident, something about it looks staged. Almost like she's already dead when the car veers off the road. Maybe it's just how the director chose to film the scene. But it left me with the feeling that Yul had to cover up the exact circumstances of her death.

That same scene also suggested that Yul left his position in Jeju and there was a gap of time before he was offered the job as Prime Minister. This would make sense, because to quietly cover up the circumstances surrounding a fatal accident to protect reputations, would have required him to pull strings and violate his staunch principles. Maybe he temporarily resigned from politics because of this? It would echo the impulses we saw during his candidacy for Prime Minister.

0

Man, I LOVE the Arabian Nights story! So happy they used this.

I mean, I was on this ship from episode one but having him call her his Scheherazade obliterated any chance of me liking any other ship for these two.

Stick a fork in me cuz I am DONE!!!!!

How much do I love it that her Christmas present to him is a book taken from his bookshelves, Arabian Nights, with the idea of reading it to him every night to cure his insomnia?

She is his Scheherazade! That's an exact allegory for their situation. So well done! It ties together all the threads in this story.

His wife was surely having an affair, with In-Hyo's brother, cos as a politician husband, he was absent and inattentive. She probably was asking for a divorce; they were arguing in the car. He didn't want to, for the sake of the children. She might have opened the car door to get off, and caused the accident....sth like that.

But he is too much of a gentleman to tell it to the world, mostly bcos the children already lost a mother, and couldn't afford to lose the memory of her as such. So everyone blames him for her death, his wife's brother, and In-hyo most of all, but also his eldest son, who is the only one of his children old enough to remember the mother.

He's been carrying all this hurt quietly, stoically for 7 years. Here comes his Scheherazade to put an ointment on his wound, with her fresh innocence and her love!

Suddenly, this is no longer just a rom-com with a silly girl and a stuffy older man to watch for the laughs.

Or he was in the other car?

I vaguely remember Ryu Jin's char saying sth about the PM driving and killing his sister, but I wasn't paying that much attn to his angry tirade.

0

I second the idea he was in the other car when he got killed. I think Yul was driving when they got in the accident, which is why he's taking the blame from his brother-in-law.

Also why he didn't know Chief Kang or about the brother at all....

I think at this point it probably was a pure accident, but Yul isn't the type to talk that much (so hasn't been giving that many details), so he's been letting people put the blame on him, given his character.

Also, I think it's more likely that his wife's death made him more stoic and strict than he was before. It would make more sense on why everyone misses her so much--he completely slid towards work to forget the pain of the death of his wife.

There may be more layers, but it's clear since he's going all Queen Victoria he feels a lot of guilt and grief over his wife's death and has not much to say to defend himself. If she wanted to have a divorce, I don't think he would be acting to this degree.

Whereas his brother-in-law resents that he took both the love he wanted and his sister. I get the sense that the Minister of Finance is also resentful that in his sorrow he slept with such a prickly woman (who seems just very, very lonely--but I wish she'd stop trying to wag her tail.) in a one night stand and got her pregnant. He probably blames Yul for that too. All the women he liked and wanted on his side went to Yul.

0

Wild speculation ahead/low chance of being real spoiler ...

Who do we think the Minister of Finance slept with and got pregnant? Secretary Seo? Who doesn't appear to have a child, so maybe abortion? After Minister of Finance asked Seo to marry him? Ohh ... the sordid possibilities of that idea.

I'd be angry too if the woman I loved aborted my child and instead stuck to my brother-in-law to devote herself to a political career. Hmm ... when did the Minister of Finance decide to go into politics? Did Seo and her love of Yul bring out the competitive side of Minister of Finance, so he gave up on his fun-loving musician side to become Yul's rival? Even so far as to marry someone he didn't love to get political backing from wealthy father-in-law?

My my, what a twisted result from misdirected love.

0

@Julia, they said at the dinner with his wife's father that the Minister of Finance had a one night stand with his current wife. =P Did you miss it? It was one line, granted.

I think it was consolation break up sex and she happened to be there, but then got pregnant with their grown son and he resents her.

It's clear why he and the current secretary broke up was that she wanted to follow Yul as part of business from what they said to each other. Also that she liked him more.

I believe this would make the most sense, they broke up, secretary followed Yul, Minister of Finance slept with his current wife, his current wife got pregnant and he was forced to marry her, his sister married someone the family was opposed to, and then his sister died. Despite his sister dying the secretary refused to work for him.

From his POV, Yul got everything and took away everything he loved.

^^;; Isn't it the Kama Sutra?

The Kama Sutra is kinda dry reading, despite the content. Also has some sexism by modern standards in it... and a few odd things here and there that would raise eyebrows by modern standards. (Child Brides, for example...) Though the Ana Ranga was written later is has far more weirdness to it (By modern Indian standards). (Saying a bride should be selected even earlier and should be "warmed up" to the older man.)

1001 Nights, I think has an air of romance, as mentioned, and a sense of sensuality without the sexual nature, if you've read the text before, the language is quite rich. That seems to be where they are in the relationship-- trying to establish a kind of friendship, wary of romance, but still working on it together. It's very nice symbol-wise.

I did not know Arabian Nights had a tamer version, I have read the R Rated one so I naturally assumed that's the one she took from his study. And 2. Well, the Kama Sutra, not because of the reading content (even I know the writing is less than the graphics) but...just because.

Ahhhh........... it's just what the doctors prescribed for the festive season.....a nice straight up heartwarming story without a typical goody two shoes, wide eyed heroine.

How much do I love that she admits her attraction to him and even comments on his body, and a prime minister who sews is just the icing on this awesome cake.

Can't wait for next week and I don't know how I'll survive the entire run like this coz right now I keep speculating about next episodes for the rest of the week.

This is what I wish romcoms were in Dramaland. Two people who respect and care about one another finding common ground, completing each other, making each other's wounds bearable and becoming a family.

We're so full of juvenile and abusive romances, yet the real adult romances are few and far between. And going by the ratings and the epic "Korean viewers can't relate" thing, one can see why.

When chaebols, aliens, time travelers, ghosts, ancestors' political woes and ridiculous makjang fests somehow feel more "relatable" than real people with real problems, it's no wonder there is so much wtfckery coming from Dramaland. I just hope the ratings remain good enough to not force any changes on the plot, which the writers are working wonders with so far.

Merry Christmas to all and let us now be patient, because we'll need to wait two weeks for Episode 7. Good time to rewatch the first 6.

My Christmas wish: I hope that the producers of these dramas can stop hitching their economic outcomes solely behind that old tired team of TNmS and AGB ratings.

How? Drama Santa, here are the stocking stuffers I'd like:

I love the Hanok that they're using for the main residence. Is it a building used for commercial purposes? I'd visit it. Is it a private residence that's been photographed for a magazine or book? I'd buy either of them to see more of it.

Are the gorgeous screens used in the interiors available commercially? Please let me know who made them.

What about that fantastic range that was behind the housekeeper when she was opening her gift. Who is the manufacturer? What are its consumer ratings?

And the clothing. I've been loving Hye Joo's coats. Who are they by? Can I have a link to an online vendor that has them in stock?

In short: In my drama stocking I'd like lots and lots of interactive media and links. In return, I'll click and buy from you. Promise.

I got my husband the watch used in Nine. It's really nice and can read the altitude too. Wasn't too expensive either. He loves it.

So I guess I'm seconding your Christmas wish. I do notice the products in the dramas and research them if they catch my attention.

That does't mean I'll be eating at Subway anytime soon, though.

But, then again, if eating at Subway means that the writers would be left alone to tell their story without ratings-oriented rewrites? Then Subway sandwiches are my new favorite food. After all, it's only for 8 weeks.

At least it fit into the story really well. Guess I will have to drive that 40 miles to my nearest Subway.... (I live in the mountains.)

0

Yep. That's a bit far to drive for a sandwich. :-)

I hadn't really thought about that scene. But they did fit it in well, didn't they? Now that I think about it, it's messaging put the product in a favorable light for it's demographic and poked fun at it's detractors. And although it was obviously embedded marketing, the writer and director used it to tell the story instead of just throwing it in as a detached focal point.

Just love what this show has been doing. For me it's been a pitch perfect drama.

If you wait til the end, where all the credits and little brand icons roll, you can often get clues to a lot of the merchandise shown in dramas if you go to their website. Many are only in Korean but many are sold worldwide, so you can usually find other languages. Depends on how dedicated you are - some can take a while to find.

I love when they showed the guards outside wearing them and looking so happy. I think it was a nice touch, because such "decorative characters" are quite dehumanized in works. I like it that they showed them as people through Da Jeong's present, because it probably did make them feel noticed and appreciated for a change.

And I love the fuzzy feeling, Christmas magic, the festive feeling though the episode. That was just perfect. And it gives such relief to the characters. "They are living through the same things than us, at the exact same time, they must be real, somewhere... "

I'm just waiting all time for monday's and tuesday's, because they are just so cute, fun, because every character is loveable, or interesting, and that's so fascinating... I'm rellay hoppin' that the drama will keep its pace and quality to the end, because if it does, it will be one of the warmest and fuzziest show ever.

I'm so happy 2013 gave me that drama in the end, cause let's face it, it was quite a poor year, especially in the romantic comedy area. We had what... I Can Hear Your Voice ? Much more than just romantic comedy to my taste. School 2013 ? More of a bromance comedy...

So Yeah. Thank you very much drama. For now.

Has it already been pointed out that the actor for Yul (Lee Beom Soo) in real life married someone who's 13 years younger than him? I read that he got married at 40 while his wife was 27. I just thought that was an interesting tidbit.

This drama is such a lovely surprise. I haven't watched Korean dramas for a long time now. I always avoid melos or anything too serious.

Love the heroine. She's such a sweetie. And the actress plays her with such heart. Just sooo good.

Am loving this drama a lot but I keep getting really uncomfortable with Joon Ki. Seriously, if he raised his wife's son (and the kid doesn't know) even if he doesn't love his wife, shouldn't he love the son he raised? It's good to see the comparisons of the two marriages and the two attitudes toward non-biological kids, but I think it should make us question Joon Ki's love for Secretary. If he is such a passionate soul who can love someone from ten years back, shouldn't he have the depth of feeling to love his not-son? It really does bother me that we're supposed to see his ability to love as a "good" part of his personality, when he's so unfeeling to his step-son? Yet he seems to really like his niece and nephews. Political marriage or not, he's got Tribethink up the wazoo.

While it's really good for the writers to make Secretary a well-rounded character, I really don't want Madam Na to be turned into an easy villainness. Not sure why I'm fixating on Madam Na so much. I guess because she's an easy target of class/status fodder. But the writers make her sweetly pathetic in her love for her husband...it's just hard.

Required fields are marked *

I wonder if Joon Ki being like that to his step-son is how he shows his love though. He told his wife that by always making it a big deal, she is the one who treats it as a problem. Maybe he knows that since his character is not affectionate, treating his son nicely just out of guilt would be too obvious and possibly worse for the boy.

I still can't read him well. He is clearly flawed and he does some pretty low things, but is he mustache-twirling evil or will they just go with pitiful and sad? We will see.

0

Required fields are marked *

I actually enjoy the way Madam Na is characterized. She's human, especially her affections for her family. She's petty, immature, and wonderfully vulnerable.

I don't think the writers intend to let Madam Na remain a single note character. They've shown us too much already. We're already responding to her so much!

Besides, that actress is infusing Madam Na with too much humanity to let her be a flat stock character.

1. I adore madam Na. Nuff said. (I mean, yes, she's a bitch, but the show clearly explains and shows WHY she's a bitch: lady seeks importance where she can find it because there's none to be had at home.)

2. I ship madam Na and Joon-Ki. Mr minister of whateva-I-ca't-remember, you have a gem by your side if you'd just turn and LOOKED at her. So stop pining after people who have zero interest in you! That is not what manly man do so step up and be a man for heaven's sake.

(Look away if you haven't seen QoH spoiler follows)

In the end, the husband lets go of his feelings for the old flame and realizes that his wife Bong Soon is perfect for him.

@ Orion, I guess he is a bit lacking in affection. But wasn't this the guy who told Secretary he would give everything up for her? (Not that she believed him.)

@anais, I'm hoping so as well.

@arawn, I'm hoping the marriage becomes a true marriage as well. We never saw a mutual requited love between Joon ki and Secretary. So it's possible, she doesn't love him in the way he loves her. Or maybe her meeting PM derailed any love she would've had for him.

Waiting to see.

He still can't show affection, even to Hye Joo. He keeps reminding her of the things that hurt her, tries to play the "You're pathetic" card with her.

So it looks like he is generally cruel to even those he cares about. Or maybe cares about. The difference with Yool is that Yool realizes it and feels bad. He will also start fixing those flaws.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes!! This is what keeps grabbing my attention (more than the In-ho plot, which is kind of simmering on the back burner for now).

It does disturb me that he's so cruel, but he's got an intriguing backstory - we know that:

(***Warning: summary of Eps 1-6 coming up if you haven't already seen 'em)

1. He's known Hye-joo since her high school days, when he and Yul were at college together.
2. He felt deeply enough to propose to Hye-joo on her birthday, but got rejected (I don't know if that means they dated for a while, or if it was all his own idea).
3. He watched his sister get married to Yul, and Hye-joo become Yul's chief secretary. He also knows HJ loves Yul.
4. His sister died in a car accident while she was married to Yul (and he blames Yul for it). Now Yul's gotten remarried to a young woman.
5. He's very fond of his niece and nephews and personally gives them presents on their birthdays (again, dunno if there's an ulterior motive for this. Probably. This guy seems to have ulterior motives for everything he does). But he also knows Yul doesn't even remember the kids' birthdays - so gets more brownie points here?
6. He expected to be next in line to the throne, so to speak, but Yul got the PM's direct nomination, so he's forced to take orders from Yul as a mere cabinet minister.
7. He obviously got married for career reasons and the ties to Madame Na's powerful father. He knew when he married her that she had some scandals and that she had (or was going to have) a baby that wasn't his - that was part of the deal.
8. He's forced to take orders and insults from his father-in-law (btw, funny to see him again in a similar role, after Secret!)

All this makes for an interesting villain, if that's what he is. I've still got sympathy for him, but I'm ready to red card him if he pulls any stupid moves to interfere in the PM-DJ relationship!

It's really sad for Madame Na, since she clearly knows there's some history between her husband and Hye-joo, which she's powerless to do anything about. And yet she's forced to see Hye-joo all the time.

She also sees the way he treats her son, and the difference between how he treats his nephews.

(wow, this got really long, sorry!)

I love how every episode is filled with heartwarming moments. This drama doesnt rely on any makjang elements, or angst-y plotlines. However, we get a simple, heartwarming story about family. I think some kdramas these days often focus too much on delivering a shocking element to its audience, some others deviate from the original plot. I liked how this drama is focused on delivering a sweet message to its audience. We see a dysfunctional family being brought together with the addition of a family member. I mean, how awesome is that! Once in a while, a drama comes by, and puts a smile on your face. This drama is just that :)

Is anyone else surprised at what a jerk Hye-Joo has become?

- She has been with him for years as his assistant but doesn't remind him of his daughter's birthday. Then gets miffed when he tells her not to get Christmas gifts for him to give to his family.
- She takes a probably expensive gift (the vase) given to someone else and destroys it without a second of thought, 5 minutes after they receive what could be a priceless historical artifact.
- She belittles/chastises her boss' wife both to DJ's face, and in front of other people, sneering at her for being little more than arm candy. At least Madame Na sees her as an equal, although a naive one.

I see HJ's behavior as inappropriate on many levels, and don't have any sympathy for her increasing desperation at having her interaction with Yul reduced by his own decision.

Is anyone going to call her on it?

I do think she's being super extra right now being butthurt and douchey to Da Jung but I don't get two of your complaints.

Maybe she didn't remember his daughter's birthday either. She's very busy too. Also she's not necessarily required to know that nor is it really her responsibility to remind a father of his daughter's b-day.

As for the vase, they all sat and contemplated what to do with it since all four of them suspected it might be bugged. Do you not remember that the person who gave it to them is their political enemy? I would have smashed it too.

Thanks for the comment!

I just think if she was angling to eventually be Wifey#2 and a supportive politician's wife, she would already be assisting in things like his kid's birthdays. Especially since she is The Keeper Of His Schedule, and coordinating where and when and why.

Yes they were all perusing the vase, but the breaking of it should have been Yul's decision and the action taken should have been initiated by the recipient of the thing (as it had in MS).

The show itself has me hooked well and good, and I can't wait to see the next episodes.

The reason I asked about this one was breaking the vase seemed unnecessary. If it's nice porcelain could hold it against a bright light to look through it. Or you could just run it through a security scanner. So I thought there might be deeper significance to why the drama wanted to show the vase being broken. Showing it being broken seemed pointless.

I actually thought that she was being quite upstanding towards Da-jung despite the fact that she totally dislikes her. While we can totally picture her being a bigger bitch to Da-jung, she's clearly holding back a lot because of her need to put Yul above all, including her own feelings.

I wonder how much more she can take, especially now that she's slowly being edged out of Yul's personal life, before she totally becomes that stereotypical second lead bitch...

0

Required fields are marked *

I suppose HJ's reactions are pretty natural. She's been in love with her boss for years but can't say anything (cos first he was married, then he was grieving his wife's loss, and it's professionally inappropriate - generally, the timing just sucks).

She's given him and his family years of cool professional dedication and expertise, at the expense of her own personal life. But then scatterbrained Da-jung comes along and what was supposed to be a non-threatening 6-month contract marriage is turning into something else, as Da-jung starts winning everyone round with hugs and smiles and bow-ties. She must be feeling like her whole life is unwinding, and she's not needed anymore...

Also, when Yul told her not to bother about the kids' Christmas presents, she'd already bought them - and the packaging at least looked pretty nice, so she'd put some thought into it.

When all's said and done, her primary motivation is still to protect Yul, so I can't fault that. If it changes, however...

Hye-Joo thought her ever-lasting devotion would win the PM, but then Dajung appeared and it was over in an instant. She's probably still in anger/denial stage. I didn't fully comprehend how over it was the moment DJ and Yul met, but now I am simply enjoying that these two are perfect together.

I thought it was totally inappropriate for her to be yelling at DJ in the hotel lobby. What if sb caught it, posted it on the net for the world to see? Wouldn't that either ruin her career or expose the ruse?
DJ stepped in to help, so that he could be PM. HJ should be a little bit thankful for that.

I get that she is jealous of DJ and therefore is nasty to her. But I think it is mostly her own fault for being totally ineffective in attracting the PM's affections or the kids'. She has had years of opportunities after all. She has pigeon-holed herself into the role of his assistant, and can't get out of it. Whose fault is it but her own? I wanted to feel sorry for all her pining, but I can't.

Ughh, am I the only one who thinks the Prime Minister is so dreamy? I have a thing for handsome men in the presidential office lol. I was like this too with Obama back in 2009 haha.

Anyways, Lee Bum Soo is doing such a great job! I love actors who really know how to project emotion through their facial expressions and he is so perfect at doing that! Love him and YoonA's chemistry as well. And the scene with his son made me sigh and awww with a ridiculous amount of cheese. I love a drama that can do that to me.

It's the charm and the swoon-factor. He has put on a bit of weight in comparison to some roles and make up and hair do change a person a lot, but purely visually, he has looked this handsome before. He just hasn't played such swoon-worthy characters often, so the charisma really hits you hard here.

I keep saying that charisma and charm are not related to looks. So many people in this fandom don't get to enjoy many a charming actor (and even actress) because they are not pretty at first sight. It's good to see some eyes open to this concept through this series and it might get them to reconsider other actors like him too.

Skills, talent, charisma. Have those and you'll charm anyone.

He was never short of skills, talent or charisma.
I've always loved him for his acting. And bcos of that, I loved his charm, screen presence and felt his charisma. Still that was way short of 'I want to have his baby' kind of craze, you know.

Just like you say, he never played such a swoon worthy char b4. It's like suddenly, his looks shot up by great leaps and bounds in our eyes. So it does take the right role for even the most skilful and talented actor w charisma aplenty to 'breakout' into super stardom. I sure hope he'll get more swoon-worthy leading roles after this.

I have so many feels for this drama omg. Episode 6 was both beautiful and cute and I can’t even with these two. With each passing episode, they’re acting more and more like husband and wife and their concern for each other and how much effect they have on each other is just perfect. My heart is so full I think I’m gonna cry.

I was worried that I wouldn't like this show when it first came on, but the pacing is really nice and Yoona is doing a really good job.

I don't think hospital hyung was in a coma -- they showed In Ho wheeling him through the halls earlier in the episode. But he's obviously not functioning properly. The pacing of the show is setting us up for all kinds of awesome revelations

I love thiss drama, your recap and all your comments. What a nice Christmas present.

I loved the reading in bed scene. It was so intimate, like a marriage, not a new relationship.

Question: Do you think that Ih-Ho intendrd to destroy the Prime Minister to avenge whatever happened to his brother, but because he falls for DJ, he changes his mind? I mean, that chess set was such a thoughtful gift. Her message was "I heard you."

"So she may end up telling him a story for one thousand and one nights… or for the rest of their lives."

I didn't think it was possible but reading that last line just melted my heart again and convinced me to rewatch Episode 6 (gosh I can't believe we need to wait for weeks to watch the next episode. BUMMER!)

Flawless commentary as always, Gummimochi! Thank you for sharing <3

Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate :-)

This is what I call real love. Not that teen angst, getting in fights, dropping umbrellas in the rain. That is what I call immature love. This show is about so many different types of love, it's about love between siblings, love between parent and child, and of course romantic love. This is about people doing things for the ones that they love, not just using pretty words. Actions speak louder than words. I haven't seen many dramas that touch on that type of love. I was impressed with this show after the first two shows but after this I am sold. Please continue like this drama and show all those other dramas out there what love is about (and yes I am talking about you Heirs). Long live Prime Minister Yool and Nam Da Jung shi!

I loved loved loved the reference to Scheherazade and Arabian Nights. One of my favourite stories of all time, and always so magical!

I am so impressed with the show! It is doing so well and I hope it keeps up. All too often, we see K-drama heros and heroines acting like a bunch of petulant children, constantly squabbling, being childish, etc. but I really love this OTP. Even though they never say it, you know they genuinely care for one another. That is so precious and it really is in the little things where you see the love!

Great recap gummimochi! Can't wait for the next ep.!

at what age do Korean children go to kindergarten? The PMs wife died in a car accident 7 years ago yet their youngest child is in kindergarten.

Who could the real father of Madame Na's son be? That seems like too juicy a detail to leave unanswered.

Woo ri is certainly being taken advantage of by his Uncle, although i couldn't exactly call him a spy. but he might be all the informant Uncle needs.

Yoon Suit Yoon's brother, I suspect, had something to do or was some way involved with Prime Minister's wife's car accident/death (both 7 years ago), which is shy my YSuitY is hanging around the PM compound. Apparently he needs to resolve some issue. But my ♥ breaks over his yearning for Da jung even though PM certainly is coming through BIG TIME on all counts regarding his kids and Da Jung and since Boem Soo is so gosh darn cute, he gets mega points for that from me. While YSuitY is a heart throb second lead, I can't not wish for PM and Da jung to really really hit it off and do something other than read in that bed they share, hey?

I adore this show, the actors, the story, the way things are unfolding, it's a kdrama that is hitting all the right notes for me. I think Yoona is perfect for a rom com younger wife role, she's funny and adorable but smart, too.

My favourite scenes so far:
- When DJ was totally happy to know what kind of underwear the PM wears (hahaha.. so cute)
- When Kwon Yul laid back on his chair listening to the contract terms that DJ created and was reading to him (his expressions were priceless!)
- When Man Se smiled after being successful of tricking DJ that he’ll be lonely if she leaves (this was when he was hiding from the ahjumma)
- When DJ’s and KY’s hands were glued to each other, totally loved the chopper scene (including the stares by Chief Kang)
- When KY was sewing the froggy doll
- The fake smiles of the ministers’ wives when the reporters were taking their pictures at subway.. hahaha
- Every skinship scenes of the hubby and wifey… hehehe

I better stop, I’d probably end up listing out every DJ and KY scenes in episode 6. Hihihi

I'm watching ep 6 from viki and it really bothers me that they missed translating what Secretary Seo told Madame Na.
Something about begging for Park Joon Ki's love?
Something between the lines "Before and now, you're still the same" and "As a female, it's quite pitiful"
Help me plssss T-T

I'm overjoyed when I watch a romance and it reminds me of something from my past that I had forgotten.

When I was a newlywed, I use to read to my husband before he went to sleep. It was a silly gesture, done out of love, because he loved the sound of my voice and the quiet time holding each other and there was still a little boy in him that liked bedtime stories.

So I'm all blubbering at the ending of this ep.

Perfect timing to show this episode at Christmas time.WOW! His kindergarten class went all out in cute costumes!

Absolutely teared up when Man Se in his cute holiday outfit started to cry because Dad wasn't there in his seat at the show but he later flew into his father's arms after the performance. Well done! Great pathos!

Spoiler Alert!

The Prime Minister has fallen in love although he won't admit it and is starting to feel jealousy with Im Ho. It was romantic that he called her MY Scheherazade! But he's fighting it because of his late wife's memory. The preview showed [spoiler deleted -gm] I think they're slowly coming together as a family. I hope it's a dream because that's really hurtful to say to poor DJ. I think she starting to love the children and the Prime Minister and I think it will be unbearable when DJ has to leave this contract marriage.

Oh Shoot...We have to wait so long to find out what happen in the next episode...

I really love the kendo scene where Yul got mad that Dajung let herself being pushed around and then tell her to defend herself in her own method -- and of course, Dajung didn't disappoint.

I'm a bit conflicted seeing Hyejoo and Joonki serendipitously met at Christmas Eve... I want them to be happy, but not with each other because I want Madam Na, as malicious as she is, to be happy too.

The “One Thousand and One Nights” allegory is simply beautiful and squee-worthy! While it's not much of a cliffhanger but it ends this heartwarming episode perfectly.

It's really easy to flub holiday episodes like this, but I thought they did it smoothly and managed to put in all of the Christmas holiday tropes very well, while still not making the story completely stop--which is often the case.

Writing handled it well and we got decent character advancement.

From the fan side, though 1001 Arabian Nights I thought was a great touch since I'm familiar with those stories... so I thought it was done well.

The whole woman that fixes things in the Manic Pixie Fairy, it seems like they are keeping an eye on it and trying to balance it out--Yu; also fixes some of his own issues on his own (for example the sweet scene of him sewing on the frog's head). Also it's not becoming soapbox-ish.

Still, given the track record of the previous dramas they've written, I'm still feeling on edge. I'm seriously hoping it doesn't go sour and won't rec this drama until it finishes.

I also thought the Christmas touch was done well - a transition by the PM from Hye joo doing the shopping (it was a bit sad when Hye Joo slipped the bags away under her desk and her duties and role in this area became blurred over the years) to giving it some thought and and designating Da Jung (and himself to an extent) to shop for the kids. After the kindergarten, it was a nice touch with the camera making the rounds at home showing the recipients and their gifts - the gurads and their new red ties, the nanny with her ♥ apron, the kids, and finally Da Jung's gift of reading for PM's insomnia.

But we never did see Prime Minister's gift to Da Jung, did we?

I liked that whole scene with the PM and HJ. If you read between the lines, it seems like he was showing an awareness that she cares for him in a romantic way, and he's gently letting her know that it's time for her to move on.

He said she shouldn't take responsibility for his children. He said he regretted how much time and concern she's been required to invest in him. He said he's worried that her investment in him has caused her to "overstep her bounds". On the surface he was saying this professionally; but I also thought he was saying it in a way that carried a deeper message. At a deeper level he was saying that she's invested 'too much' in him and her emotions have crossed a boundary that they shouldn't.

When I saw that scene I thought it gave us even more reasons to fall in love with him! The PM was showing depth of awareness by seeing she needs to pull back emotionally. And he was showing depth of character by trying to help her recognize this in a way that allows her to maintain her dignity.

This scene was excellent, I agree with your analysis and I think we have a major incident coming because she is so invested in him that she will trip up and things are going to become complicated with her old flame.

This was my favorite episode so far and primarily because we get to really see the heart of Da-Jung. She is not just touching the lives of the family, but even the bow ties she got for all the security detail and the pride they felt at being remembered. She is an enormously loving person and everyone is going to feel it.

I Like the fact that the questions that are brought up in an episode are answered in the next. I don't feel like I'm wasting my time with filler episodes to get my answers. I also love that the PM and his wife although they don't love each other (yet) , they don't hate each other either. You can see that they are willing and actually do help one another
