Lee Jong-seok considers new medical drama

Yay, Lee Jong-seok (I Hear Your Voice) might be coming back to dramaland! Thank goodness because I really really missed him for those 2.5 seconds he was gone. The downside is that he’s considering a medical drama, which doesn’t excite me in the least. But who knows; this one’s got a premise that might shake things up a bit. It’s called Doctor Stranger (stranger meaning foreign, alien), and it’s being shopped at SBS for a possible spring broadcast to follow Warm Words.

On the upside, the series is being produced by PD Jin Hyuk of City Hunter and Master’s Sun, and writer Park Jin-woo of Conspiracy in the Court. They’re courting Lee Jong-seok to play the lead, which would be a Prosecutor Princess reunion for him and PD Jin Hyuk. But his reps have made it clear it’s far from a done deal, and that it’s just one of many projects he’s considering. I’m not sure I’m behind him taking on a medical drama, not least of which because he’d look like Doogie Howser in a lab coat. Unless that’s the point.

The drama is about a North Korean doctor who defects and ends up in the South, and it tells the story of his life as a stranger in a foreign land. If he signs on, Lee Jong-seok will headline as the titular defector doctor. I’m not sure what kind of setting that means for him as a doc—does he practice medicine in a South Korean hospital? Because that seems unlikely. It’d be fun if they did what Covertly, Grandly did with spies, and made him a small town doctor practicing on the down-low. At least the North/South divide sets us up for a much richer conflict than just another medical drama about a super doc… I hope?

Doctor Stranger is angling for a March broadcast on SBS.

doesn't he look a little too... young to be playing a doctor? it'd be a little hard to suspend THAT much belief, when he was playing high school students in his last few dramas

This character doesn't suit him! :(
He is too young for the character of an doctor.

The character is supposed to be a 'genius' so I guess that explains him being so young. The drive for eye candy is strong amongst producers...

Why is the dramaworld sometimes so lacking in originality?

Actually, let me rephrase that: it's not that I'm tired of geniuses, but I'm tired of characters that are geniuses for no good reason at all, other than to just elevate the character in status, to allow too-young-actors to play roles, to provide an easy solution to plotholes that would otherwise arise etc etc etc.

Now if there was actually a genius character and they did something serious with it (e.g. actually use that part of the character to explore issues it comes with) I'd be game.

"to allow too-young-actors to play roles"

Bingo. You hit the nail on the head. And also to allow the too young actors to get older love interests ;-)

On the one hand, we have LJS being wooed over this where he is too young to play the role. On the other we have LMH who is too old to play the high school student in Heirs. As much as I like these actors, I think it is kinda getting ridiculous. On a different note, I think this story seems more than just a genius doctor drama but in any case, I will probably watch a few eps for LJS candy. :)

me too, tired using young actor with excuse of geniuos. so many genious charracter in the drama. And medical drama again in short of time i guess i'm bore with this theme

I will say one thing about Japanese med dramas - at least none of the super genius doctors (like Doctor-X) are barely out of their teens. But I guess you have to be eye-candy to be a doctor in in k-dramas :(.

While the NK aspect might be interesting, I will wait for more details before jumping on this. Not like there is any hurry, since it will be months.

I WISH Oppa Lee Min Ho,who I am his fan, would act in drama or movie back 2 back but usually it takes a LONG time for us(Minoz) 2 hear about his comeback project!
Actually 3 episodes of the heirs is left,But I already miss him in dramaland!
I HOPE that this MEDICAL drama will NOT turn out 2 be a flop like "Medical Top Team"!!
although I am not Lee Jong Seok's fan,I keep my fingers crossed so that he will make a wise choice & read the script carefully! :))

I'm watching it now. It's beautifully shot but it's pretty boring 80% of the time. The other, better 20% is reserved solely for Joo Ji Hoon who is stealing the show. His scenes are perfection.

Also his character is literally the most interesting part of the story. Such that I'm confused as to who is the main character cuz Kwon Sang Woo's character is barely scripted out. All the major conflict is about Dr. Han (Joo Ji Hoon).

He's the bastard chaebol son of the conglomerate that controls the hospital in the story. He and his mother are both shunned by the entire family and his father literally tells him to his face that he regrets allowing him to be born. (Yea, he said that.)

His mom is a raging alcoholic who loves her son almost too much and he's at a loss as to how to help her. He's getting pressure from both of them to be the best and that's why he's so driven as a doctor.

Proving his worth as a human being to his father is also why he's desperate to do well with putting together the Top Team.

The entire drama has been about whether Dr. Han will stick to his morals and be a good doctor who helps people or throw everything away for his ambition. He's struggling between his duty to his patients and his perceived duty to his family...all while dealing with an alcoholic mother and a girlfriend(?) who constantly gives him the cold shoulder.

Kwon Sang Woo has been regulated to a foil for Joo Ji Hoon's character at this point. His only purpose now is to be Dr. Han's conscience. They brought up a whole orphanage abuse and missing mother plot line for him in the beginning that had potential. After puttering around with it for like two eps, they dropped it. That happened so long ago I barely remember what it was about.

Jung Ryu Won fares better than Kwon Sang Woo in that her character has personal failures and issues (namely her pride) to overcome. We do watch her grow but she was so unbearably douchey for such a long time that it was hard to like her for half the series. She gets better eventually and they finally start showing her growing as a person. They still short changed her way more than Joo Ji Hoon but at least she had more to work with than the so called lead male.

Honestly, the cases weren't that interesting and the entire story in general is sleep inducing but there are some stellar moments from Joo Ji Hoon that really cut to the bone. I'd say only watch this drama if you like him and want to see him stealing every scene like a boss.

PS. The OST is wassup tho. Find and get that joint immediately. It's awesome.

No, puppy! Stay away from the medical drama.......

Truthfully, the fact that PD Jin Hyuk is responsible for City Hunter and Master's Sun makes me waver on the 'staying away' part, but a lot - a LOT - will depend on the script and other casting. If the focus isn't on the medicine part of things but the NK/SK stuff too, I could live with it. (but please, please let it not be like the awful textbooky medical parts of Cain and Abel)

I have a strong feeling he won't actually take this - SBS hasn't even commented on its chances of being organized (which probably hinge on who the production company can cast) and his side basically said that he only got the script and is 'reviewing' it instead of 'positively reviewing' it. Moreover, Warm Words is already airing and there's not much time before a time slot decision needs to be made.

He needs to do the smart thing and stay in movies for a while and maybe do a drama for his fans before going to the army. I could really see him being as big as Jung Woo Sung/ Lee Jung Jae in the future and neither of those guys have ever wasted much time with dramas.

yeah, the tone of the announcement makes it quite clear it's far from certain - literally the only part of the drama that sounds like a positive is the name of the PD (who's had all of five minutes to breathe since Master's Sun).

And I agree that LJS now has a whole lot of options, career-wise, in the near future. Being part of two breakout dramas and one of the year's most successful movies in a single year and establishing leading man status has got to be sweet, but IHYV is recent enough that he doesn't need to be chasing dramas right away.

LJS seemed to be unhappy with his acting in movies, and actually said he prefers dramas. I can see him pulling a 2013 again with 5 projects at once in the next 2 years providing the iron'd still be hot.

This doctor thing sounds like a cross between Cain & Abel and Black Jack. I like the Black Jack angle with genius gambling with lives and in it for the money, but do not have much faith in Korean medical dramas.

No comment on Lee Jong Seok but...

Enough with the male genius fetuses. Seriously. Would it kill Korean writers to give young women some positive professional role models? Why not write a story around a young female genius? I guess they think that kind of stuff doesn't give people the same tingle that jailbait does but I have far more faith in the viewing public. It's high time that women get stories that don't revolve around a douchebag and a Nice Guy (TM) fighting for their affections. Or frigid career women who must be stripped of their uppity attitudes by the power of luuurrrve.

RME.

Personally, I'm happy if the heroine displays some form of character development, by which I do NOT mean ice queens melting thanks to the power of luuurve (lol). IHYV did ok on that front, allowing the heroine to genuinely develop as a lawyer and as a person thanks to her relationships with people who were not her OTP love interest.....too bad the actual procedural stuff was laughably slapdash.

And kdramas generally don't do so well at depicting professions (other than maybe teaching? Because there are teenagers around?), I've noticed. And medical dramas tend to be the worst because of all the technical jargon involved.

We should be demanding so much more, pogo :-(

All that go go girl power stuff is just posturing in the end. I'm interviewing for a surgery residency and it's unbelievably challenging being a young female trying to hang with the old boys. Maybe I'm just being selfish but do we really need another drama about conflicted young guys?

And I've heard that the female lead is a jealous, uppity doctor. You see, that's all we're good for.

Jdramas do a bit better on this scale. I am watching one called Hard Nut where the mathematical genius is a woman and she is not just a genius (who never expresses her intelligence) but actually does the math in the drama. It's amazing.

Thanks, will try to find it.

Jdramas are really good when they address human potential and realistic conflict. Plus you still get the sappy shoujo stuff for when you just feel like shutting your brain off :-)

Doctor-X (and Doctor-X 2) are good in that respect also. While the lady is a genius doctor, she is not some teenager looking thing. The actress that plays Michiko (Yonekura Ryoko) was born in 1975 (and I love her in that role!).

0

BTW Hard Nut and Doctor X (both seasons) are on Viki and Drama.net.

0

@Annie

You can find Hard Nut on gooddrama.

I love it.

Hashimoto Ai totally outshines Kora Kengo.

I actually love that she's a math genius but that her solutions never quite work - like the math is perfect, but then there is always a twist in the case that means that solving the math problem is only gets you part of the way.

And I love that the Kora despairs when she starts spouting her math. (Okay, I'm going off topic... but anyhow, watch it!)

0

@Annie

Ohh!!!!!
Believe me everyone I talked to tried discouraging me from trying for a surgical residency.

Never give up.

Hope you'll have good luck.

And yes LJS as a med school student is just about believable. Him being a doctor old enough to defect is the biggest joke.
Our imaginations will probably snap trying to stretch themselves enough to believe it.

A lot of people don't notice, but in general k-dramas are pretty awful with almost any kind of technical stuff. And I would not say that they do good at portraying teachers either, when the students all seem to just go to school when they want, come and go in class when they want, and the teachers are all totally stupid except for the hero(ine) and perhaps the OTP.

LOL dramaland can be so annoying when it does this 'trend' thing without a stop. When time-travel was a thing, we had non stop dramas themed with that. Then ghosts became a trend and they were everywhere. Now medical themed dramas are a thing and we will have a barrage full of them! Why can't there ever be a variety instead of copying each other's already copied ideas??

I really enjoy good medical dramas though, but what I want from them is usually intelligence. I felt like GD was ridiculously simple, and MTT - I couldn't go past episode 3. If we can have something thought proving them I'm in. Lee Jong-seok or not. But I'm still hoping the next trend will be original instead.

I was curious to see if he was going to revert back to a second lead role for his next drama. IHYV was a hit, but he's still very young and looks it, which I've noticed isn't a trait producers want in their leading men. So it's good to see he's being courted to headline something. I hope that if he does decide to sign on to this, the stars align perfectly to bestow us with the perfect trifecta of writing, directing, and acting.

Also, can't help but desperately wish for Kim Ji Won to be cast in this (or anything good really). It's a shame that a talented young actress of her caliber was completely wasted on Heirs.

Yeah, it's probably going to be an older actress who ultimately gets cast as the female lead, which is okay as long as she can act and fits the role. I just wish there were more interesting roles or just more choices in general for up and coming actresses (who are not Park Shin Hye).

I thought I was the only one that thought that. Whether it comes to actors or genres, it seems like they cannot get out of the box, with a very few exceptions. I find it interesting how many of the "new" ideas come from Japanese manga and the like.

0

You seem to be in the know about SK media. Is there any buzz about Kim Ji Won among the netizens due to Heirs at all? I know Woo Bin is the breakout star of the show, stealing the limelight even from Lee Min Ho, but the least this role could've done for Ji Won is given her some positive publicity.

0

From what I've heard*, Japanese dramas are much less expensive to produce and there are lots of active scriptwriters and people who cross over from mangas. In Korea, you basically have a few elite scriptwriters (with Kim Soo Hyun being their dowager empress) and the rest just wallow in daily and weekend makjang drivel. Being bold and trying new ideas isn't as dangerous an endeavor there as it is in Korea from the looks of it. Plus, Japan has been a soft power superstar for so much longer than Korea has that I guess it's only natural to look to it for inspiration (look no further than the unholy matrimony of Jpop and Jdramas).

tl;dr summary: $$$$$$$

*I'm no expert so please take this with a grain (or a chunk) of salt.

0

Yeah, by now actresses like Kim Ji-won, Im Joo-eun and Jung So-min (I've heard good things about Lee Yoo-bi as well) should be snatching up drama leads left and right, but no such luck. Park Bo-young and Kim Go-eun are other talented actress from that age cohort, but both seem firmly established in the film side of the industry at this point.

So for dramas, it's just older actesses/Park Shin-hye/idols.

0

@mina

I'm so not in the know it's not even funny - I've just had a little too much time lately and good ol' Google Translate to help me :-D, so I don't really know about Kim Ji Won's reception. If you go to Netizen Buzz, all the comments are basically about Kim Woo Bin.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

0

Not just her, but Choi Jin-hyuk and Im Joo-eun are being criminally wasted as well.

Basically, Kim Woo-bin and Krystal are the only ones getting to have fun with their characters, and in the former case, it's mostly through sheer force of charm & charisma, since Youngdo's written inconsistently/poorly as well.

Can't you see Kim Woo Bin, or someone equally good at switching from stuck-up rich city guy to loveable endearing guy, playing the part? But the people in the small town would be the best because it could be very uniquely Korean country folk which are sooo different than American country folk. I'd watch it. Since everyone else has already commented on his too young appearance, I won't beat a dead horse.

It's strange cuz I kind of want Lee Jong Suk to do a span of movies for a bit. I lurv him a lot and usually I'd be demanding a 50+ ep saga so I can experience him long term.

But for some reason I feel like he's at a crucial part of his acting experience and I want him to hone himself in the movie market. They are almost always better with better directors and better scripts.

Lee Jong Suk shines best when he works with talented directors and respected sunbaes who can pull things out of him.

I think he'd do well to be in the movie industry for a time before doing dramas again. I don't want insipid drama after insipid drama to ruin his burgeoning talent like it did with Jang Geun Suk, who's been phoning in his performances for a while now.

If he must do a drama, I do kinda wish he was considering a police show a la Special Affairs Team TEN or God's Quiz. I feel like he'd do well in that genre. He could stretch his acting a bit. Plus he'd make a more convincing rookie cop fresh from the Academy than he would a genius doctor.

If he does take this one on tho, I'll watch tho since I do enjoy him a lot. I'll just have to aggressively suspend disbelief the entire time.

How bout he become the Oriental/Traditional doctor instead compared to the modern one. Well, if it gonna be aired on SBS for sure the station will take this drama since LJS on it. Hopefully.
