Kim Rae-won joins Lee Min-ho in Gangnam Blues

Now that Heirs is finally in our rear-view mirror (Whoops, did that sound too happy?) Lee Min-ho is gearing up for his new movie Gangnam Blues, the ’70s action noir about the shady dealings behind the real estate development of Gangnam. He now has a co-star in Kim Rae-won (My Little Hero), who has signed on to play his friend who becomes his greatest rival. Whoo. It’s a little jarring for Lee Min-ho to go from playing a high-schooler to a gangster and Kim Rae-won’s friend, but I’m all for graduating. On to bigger and better things!

The movie is the next project from director Yoo Ha of Once Upon A Time in High School and Dirty Carnival, and tells the Friend-esque tale of two buddies who become enemies in a dirty power struggle. The noir action thriller will focus on the movers and shakers in the shadows behind the 1970s real estate boom of Gangnam—the dirty money and gangster dealings on the dark side of the struggle for political power and ultimately wealth.

Lee Min-ho plays the tragically-fated hero who plays a key role in shifting the power dynamic of the district. Kim Rae-won plays his childhood friend and the two naturally end up in opposing organizations later. Cue music of epic broken bromance here. This is totally beside the point, but does anyone else think that the ’70s gangster suits will actually be a step up from Lee Min-ho’s parade of atrocious duds in Heirs? Then again, what wouldn’t be a step up from that?

Gangnam Blues starts shooting early next year for a 2014 release.

I'm actually one of the few who loved the Heirs for the story and the chemistry of the OTP, yes I said chemistry.
I'm looking forward to this movie though. It'll be good to see Lee Min-ho in something dark.

I agree with you. I'm also one of the few pople who seemed to enjoy heirs. Just an interesting observation: the people who are apparently so happy that heirs is over seem to be the same people who are hung up on it and keep talking about it. You don't like it. We get it. Let's move on.

Your above comment is what common sense would suggest (also, no one is going to care about Heirs after this week/outside of posts about its stars in the near future), but experience has taught me never to underestimate the defensiveness of Heirs fans.

One thing Heirs made me realize!

And I want a long time, really really long time to forget those sweaters and jackets! *shivers*

The fashion will be...visually challenging. As we now know from Heirs, there is in fact some things that even Lee Min Ho cannot make look good. Pants were much more form fitting in the 70's.. okay that was a good thought, ha.

At least they are telling us up front that he is tragically fated but I doubt that they are referring to wide lapels and the leisure suit. It will not be a sitch of a hey this is a great movie and fun and...oh crap what are they doing, nooo, wow, that was mest. Then again we could be punked and it turns into a a romance or a comedy at the end, but doubtful.

Not that I have trust issues with Korean movies and dramas or anything. Ha.

@Mar - like I said below, I can deal with visually challenging if it's clearly part of a defined character aesthetic/making a statement about the character (and I love when dramas do that). Like Gu Jun-pyo's crazy furry/woolly collared coat? A-ok. Kim Tan's clothes? I legit did not know whether the coordis hated LMH and were trying to get back at him for wrongs done in a past life, tbh.

Required fields are marked *

I like it too! Loved the clothes in BOF. Doesn't mean stuff isn't ugly sometimes. I assumed the sweaters served 2 purposes: as a tongue in cheek poke at label snob stuff-aka some people will wear anything with a designer label on it. Like the track suits in SeGa. With KT it was supposed to be the sweaters. Except it was funny in SeGa. (I'm pretty sure KT wore a pair of the track pants from SeGa in at least one scene.) I also thought by putting him in the old people sweaters it aligned with his kind of old soul, but also, weary soul, character. I had the occasional thought that when he came home for the U.S. he just asked his Mom to buy him a bunch of clothes and he was like whatever.

A lot of people complained about the coats and the suits. I loved them. I liked some of the sweaters too-the fuzzy blue one, yum.

Something I've recently come to realize is that my attraction to a guy may be connected to whether or not I'd like to wear his clothes lol. That may be weird but I am totally okay with that.

Required fields are marked *

It wasn't really the sweaters that made my eyes hurt (again, the character statement of them didn't really come across at all) so much as the hideous neckbrace-looking jacket when he's at the police station and hyung comes to bail him out. Or the even more hideous plaid suit in the fakeout flash forward. I could get the statement in SeGa but here...nope.

Something I’ve recently come to realize is that my attraction to a guy may be connected to whether or not I’d like to wear his clothes lol.

I used to think that too, and then Jang Geun-seok (YAB) and So Ji-sub (Master's Sun) exploded that theory pretty comprehensively, lol. But in real life, I've noticed that I do tend to like men's clothing more than women's, and gravitate towards people who wear clothes I'd like to steal :).

As we watched Heirs, how many of were aware of the fact that some of the Kim Tan's fashion (Ahjumma sweaters and all) were from the houses and/or brands of Alexander McQueen (McQ), Givenchy, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbanna, Balmain, Hermès, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Jill Stuart, etc.?

Wow. That's some dedicated fan to compile all of that. I counted only 3 items I really didn't like. The Dries Van Noten on E4, the white Lord & Taylor on E19, and another L&T on E20. The sweaters I didn't mind because the material looked soft and comfortable to wear not to mention warm enough for the cold weather. Some of the printed dress shirts were questionable but found it okay because it was worn under sweaters/coats.

Really appreciate and love most of the rags worn by LMH in Heirs....don't quite get all those whining about "Ajummas" sweaters/shirts...these prints are the retro look and I have such nostalgia for this type of look. LMH has good taste...if report is true that he himself personally picked these clothings.

Branded/designer stuff can range from really gorgeous fashion to the not-so-appealing stuff. It's a pity that Kim Tan's taste or fashion sense ran more to the latter...

0

I hope people are aware that just because something is high-end or designer, doesn't mean it was flattering or should be exempt from criticism if it looks bad.

I personally don't mind awful fashion choices as long as they say something about the character (a recent example being all those clown suits and drab uniforms on the leads of Master's Sun, in the initial episodes) or the aesthetic is clearly being used as part of the story. Heirs got it spot-on with only one character, Ki-ae in that Miu Miu in episode 9 at the parent-teacher meeting. On Kim Tan, it's just ugly clothes for no rhyme, reason or character statement that I can make out.

Heirs was one rare drama which got hated by international viewers and loved by Korean viewers. Lol it is usually the other way, most of times.
Regarding Lee Min-ho fans leaving dramabeans, i think it's because his last two dramas were not met with favourable reviews here, so fans have gone in lurk mode(No one could leave dramabeans, it's an addiction). Popularity of an actor is directly proportional to his dramas. You only spaz when actor is hot thing. LMH was a hot thing during BOF, City Hunter days. Not anymore.

The Dramabeans commenters are not equal to the whole international audience....just google and search.....you'll find how popular Heirs is internationally....and that LMH is still a hot thing...

I see a lot of negative comments on many other sites about Heirs also, so it is not limited to here. Heirs fans seemed to be a bit more fanatical than most, so the split in opinions was much more obvious. But, I recall a recent post on DF which went something like "I have no idea what the plot is about, I am watching it for LMH and PSH".

Presumably his high school days are finally behind him, so in this movie perhaps we will see how well he can actually do, since the acting standards for movies are usually slightly higher than for weekly dramas.

Required fields are marked *

I wonder if LMH people are in backburner mode-if they are, I do not know if that is a valid statement- not because of the LMH last two dramas not being popular here, but rather that they choose not to deal with negativity from commenters that started with the moment that Heirs was cast. I personally stopped reading the Heirs threads early on because it appeared to me a lot of commenters were not interested in discussion of the drama but rather wanted to either bust on the cast, talk about how much they did not like Heirs, or talk about other dramas. Every single episode. I enjoy LMH but I do not participate in threads that I do not enjoy. Let me be clear that I am speaking about the comments in the peanut gallery for the Heirs threads, NOT about DB recaps and commentary. This is a personal blog, and I do not forget that I am a guest here. Well, at least I hope I use my manners.

Yes I am a fan of LMH and yet I totally agree with you there. People equated disliking his character to disliking him which was not really the case. Many "beanies" on the Dramabeans recap threads actually watched "Faith" and "Heirs" and had favorable postings, insights, and regularly engaging opinions/thoughts about both dramas.

Also of note:

Faith: Episode 24 (Final)
by girlfriday | October 30, 2012

"I enjoyed the characters and I liked the setup and the world. But the directing and the editing left me cold, which means I watched it all at arm’s length, excavating what was intended from what was given."

"All told, it was still a fun show. . .That was something evident in the writing that the directing couldn’t mess up; in fact, the wit was probably this show’s saving grace. I came to this party for Epic; alas, he was a no-show, and instead I walked away with a sweet love story. It didn’t fulfill what I wanted this show to be (or heck, what Show wanted itself to be), but it was a nice consolation prize, and at least it closed its own story in a logical way, which is more than some."

Heirs: Episode 20 (Final)
by girlfriday | December 12, 2013

"Truthfully it wasn’t really a drama that had twenty episodes of story to sustain it in the first place, so I’m pleased that at least there are a few good character beats to leave on, if nothing else."

"It wasn’t like I hated the drama with a fiery vengeance or anything, though I doubt it’s news that I didn’t love it."

"As a drama universe, I did like peering in on the world of kids acting like adults, and sort of skipping their youth to go be groomed to run corporations."

The Heirs is a guilt pleasure drama for everyone(korean+international fans).
Yeah,it's popular, many people watches the first 3-4 episodes and dropped as they noticed that it's...horrible? some continue watching it as it's so pretty.
Some may even like it just because they got attched to the beautiful characters for whatever reasons or just because they are beautiful. But everyone knows that it sucks or at least that it's not that good.

LOL...totally wrote that before I read to the end.

Will it be a step up or down...let's imagine...

The nice plaid number in the 'grown up' scene was a '70s suit in 80's color, worn with a 10s shirt. Imagine a nice plaid suit in a new wonder fabric called polyester, with a cotton blend shirt that has a HUUUUUGE collar and worn with a HUUUUUGE necktie of undecipherable fabric...or a polyester ascot. All in a color palate of bark brown, powder blue, pumpkin orange, harvest gold and avocado green. Mmmmmm.

And to finish the styling, add hair that's either short with mega sideburns or a permed afro.

That's early '70s.

Or if it's the late '70, it'd be a white TIGHT fitting suit, worn with a qiana shirt unbuttoned to the navel and longish hair in a modified Farrah cut.

Thinking...*picturing LMH n a tight suit, shirt unbuttoned to the navel and longish hair*...*why is this room so hot*... *goes to turn the thermostat down*

Yunno, I think this movie could be great,

PROVIDED that "ill-fated" means one melt down scene (like the fantastic sequence in Heirs) and NOT a character who is totally EMO all the time (like the rest...never mind.)

The 70's had some of the ugliest fashion in the entire universe since the 1890's. It was a time when fashion was transitioning from Hippy Mode into Yuppy Mode, and it was not a pretty sight. It is telling that women's 70's fashion now shows up on eBay as Halloween costumes :D

i remember in the BOF days, lee min-ho reminded me a lot of kim rae-won. not their looks, but at the time they'd had a similar sort of energy. there was that soccer drama kim rae-won dropped (was it heading to the ground?) and i'd mused about lee min-ho for the role then... though, seeing how that drama turned out, thank god he didn't.

would love to see LMH do something new like this, and pull it off and remind us that he's LMH... just to help us forget heirs. which in retrospect, i'm not so sure was such a great drama for him. i don't think his fan count would have diminished any, but i think kim woo-bin stole a bit of the spotlight from him. to me, i'll always remember and like young-do more than tan when thinking of heirs.

I am major excited to KRW back in a drama!! I think he was my first heartthrob when I first started watching KDramas. What a surprising actor who has chosen some difficult roles and story lines. I still reel from his acting in Say You Love Me and A Thousand Days Promise! Fun in Attic Cat and loved Gourmet!! I still need to hunt down his other movies/dramas. I am looking forward to these two very different actors in a drama together.

Was heirs really that bad? at the very least it was watchable right? anyway, that's over and done for. I cannot wait to see LMH play a tragic character!! He'll be sooo good at it :D

I am nigerian and I love LMH, but truth be told I was more disappointed in the storyline of the heirs than I was with any of the casts.cos they just acted out what was in their scripts.....also I didn't like kim tan's hair it didn't look good on LMH unlike the hairdo in his other dramas...!but one thing everyone both haters and lovers of LMH (especially haters) should get is that LMH is a very talented actor.he delivers perfectly any role he is given and he especially made heirs watchable, cos almost everyone wanted to watch d show cos he was in it and those who stopped halfway through did cos d story wasn't captivating not cos LMH didn't deliever his part well.also I think it'l be great for him to do more mature roles and not takeup high school anymore,he can leave that to d up and coming LMH wanna bes.and as for him playin a lead character to his costar in his 2014 upcoming drama, get dis people:that has nothing to do with him being to young or less talented compared to his costar.he was given the lead cos he is who's trending in dramas now and someday to he'l be taking costar roles instead of lead cos there'l be other better young actors than him and he wouldn't be able to takeup certain roles any longer......that said LEE MIN HO I LOVE YOU.u are a great actor so keep up the good work and pls takeup more action roles like city hunter cos u brings out ur inner talent

I am a fan of Lee min ho from India .. I loved heirs... n trust me internationally also people r loving it...the storyline is very much predictable but at the same time LMH and the other cast still made it so enjoyable...I have seen other korean dramas as well ... but LMH is the only korean actor that that I like... other actors were gr8 too ... but I remember the dramas not the actors... but LMH is the only one I follow bcoz of his amazing acting skills..and ofcourse his charm :)

I am from India and a really gr8 fan of Lee Min Ho ,right from the days of BOF .I have watched all of his series and liked them .I liked him in heirs too ,and I dont have ne problem with the clothes he wore and his acting was pretty good too .I do agree ,that storyline was not something gr8 and predictable but the series was hit and most of them have liked Kim Tan character and the proof for that is the recent SBS awards where LMH bagged 5 awards .He was also awarded most popular award ,so I dont think that his popularity is fading .I am really waiting for his next movie and whatever character he plays .be it high school drama ,action ,comedy I will watch him and will always love LMH

I absolutely love Minho. I literally click on his fb profile every five mins just to see how many likes he got within that time. Yeah I know, it's an obsession but LMH is the only actor I genuinely care about. He is super talented and so sweet and lovable. O was blown away by how amazing he was in faith n no matter what he does in the future I'll always adore him.
And btw to all those who hate heirs so much, there is saying that states that 'no publicity is bad publicity.' So techncally speaking, all the hatred actually contribute to the popularity of the drama. And let's face it. The heirs being bad wan't LMH's fault. It's the writer's. And the fact that so many are commenting about Minho when this is mainly an article on kin Rae won also shows that whether he us liked or hated, he is still undeniably popular. .

Love LMH but don't like the Heirs. I stopped after episode 2. But like others said, it wasn't his fault, there are so many popular actors and actresses in it too, why do you guys blame only him for the bad drama? Is it because of his acting? No, everyone agrees it's not good because of the boring story line. His only fault is trusting the famous writers.
Funny thing is it had pretty high rating in S. Korea and China, but most american kdrama fans don't enjoy it. In contrast, Faith didn't get high rating in Korea, but a lot of kdrama fans here like it.

I'm a LMH fan since BOF days but i do agree to some People here i stopped watching heirs after 4 episodes it was boring... He should play a diff role now no more HS student stuff... He was good at BOF but that was awhile back and he was young he should do more mature roles now

Looking forward to this movie!!!

"Lee Min-ho plays the tragically-fated hero who....."

Like, he's going to die in this thing?
That's a little bit more than I wanted to know.

FINALLY! Lee Minho in a role that'll be as good as the one in Faith. I oved him in that drama and i only really watched heirs because of him and it made me realize one thing: this guy makes you got to some serious lengths in order to like him. Anyway he's off with his youth roles (thank goodness for that) and he's becoming a cool gangster so yay!

btw to all those people who think that Minoz have left DB that's not true at all. Speaking for myself, i found it really difficult to respond to anybody because of all the negative comments for Heirs, so i decided not to say anything at all. And i believe that goes for many of his fans. Nobody likes to see their favorite actor's character being verbally bashed so naturally they'll tend to reply less.
And really Heirs did wonders to Minho's popularity overseas. He reached 20 million followers in Weibo, 13 million on fb and even appeared on the Chinese new year special show. Plus his endorsements are skyrocketing in terms of profit and he is constatnly being talked about. So in terms of career moves, Heirs was one of the best projects ever for Minho. Too bad that it was nearly intolerable for some people though...

To be very honest, I found The Heirs a bit of just a hype and not enough action for me. But who cares about The Heirs and hey Gangnam Blues. I actually think I'm interested in it because my babes KRW (a girl can dream LOL), but the plot sounds interesting and I kinda like when LMH plays serious roles like in Faith, his acting skills shines in there :)

Anyways, I can't wait for these two to act alongside each other :)
