Kang Dong-won and Song Hye-gyo play young parents
by girlfriday
Aw, this movie is so going to tug at the heartstrings. It’s been teased that Song Hye-gyo (That Winter, The Wind Blows) would be starring in the new movie Dugeun Dugeun My Life (dugeun is the sound of a heartbeat, like thump-thump) as a young mother, and along with her casting confirmation comes the news that Kang Dong-won (Psychic) will be playing her leading man. Now that is one good-looking couple.
The pair of actors have actually played lovers before, in the 2010 omnibus film Camellia–Love For Sale (the stills below are from their segment). This time they’ll be playing once-teenage parents who now face losing their teenage son. Kang Dong-won plays a character who was barely sixteen when his girlfriend became pregnant; Song Hye-gyo’s character is seventeen at the time. They have a son, but he’s born with progeria, a genetic condition that causes rapid aging. Fast-forward to seventeen years later, when the parents are in their early thirties and their son looks older than them, and faces death at just seventeen.
Directing is Lee Jae-yong of Actresses, and the movie is being produced by the company behind Jeon Woo-chi and All About My Wife. The movie is an adaptation of a bestseller by the same title, and will be a thoughtful human drama about delicate emotions, age, and family. And it’s called a cheerful uplifting movie rather than a melodrama, though I’m sure it won’t fail to wring tears. The actors will be playing very ordinary people who may be young and inexperienced, but are the best loving parents they know how to be. Though it goes without saying that no wisdom of age can ease the pain of being parents who must prepare for the death of their son.
Dugeun Dugeun My Life plans to start shooting early next year for a 2014 release.

I'm puzzled about how they will portray the son, since you can't just take an older person and say bam, they are really young but have progeria. It's not simply that they look old. They also look different. What I keep thinking of is that Robin Williams movie Jack from 20 years or so ago....I don't remember if they said he had progeria or if he just was described as aging rapidly, but they made no attempt to be consistent with someone who actually has progeria. It was still a touching movie, though I don't think that lack of authenticity really flies these days.

They did it with 'Oh! Brothers', so I am guessing they'll do it again. I doubt they have a budget for the effects needed to make a person look at they should with Progeria, so it will be a case of an older actor pretending to be a child again.
Which does suck and makes me wonder why they did not just change the condition, since you can do a lot of the same things drama-wise with a teenager or young adult and any other health problem.
Still, these two are interesting to see as the parents, so maybe it will turn out well or maybe the Progeria bit will even be changed. We'll see.

Yeah the Jack movie I don't think was progeria. However, for how Hollywood did a brilliant version of someone who is young but looks old, the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" had a baby born old who slowly gets more youthful as he ages. As an "old" child it definitely looked realistic.

I looked up Jack - they were careful to say that he 'grows' at 4X normal but not that he 'ages' at 4X normal.
I saw BB and was thinking about that while I was wondering about this one - that was a bigger budget though I'm betting, and the old child was special effects if I recall correctly? I guess we will see!

This is going to be a sad movie, I can already tell. It puts me in mind of that Robin Williams movie "Jack". That was a sad movie, and this will be too.
I like Song Hye-kyo, though I've only seen her in That Winter, The Wind Blows, and she was good in that. I'm not familiar with Kang Dong-won.
Still, sounds sweet, heart-breaking, and fantastic.

Yes, they'll make beautiful couple. I love them both since making the movie Camelia and secretly hoping they're dating but that time she was having a boyfriend, Hyun Bin. Don't kill me please, but I was happy when months later she broke up and then getting closer publicly to Kang Dong Won with him joining her agency. I do believe they're really dating now. Good job SHK & KDW. Can't wait for your beautiful babies :D

I keep thinking Samcheonpo in AM1994.
But based on the comments, it's not as simple as casting an older or older-looking actor for the role.
I don't know anything about the disease but I bet this is going to be a tearjerker. :(

I was confused for a second when it was suggested they will play young parents. In my head I was like but they look and are at the age where many have children so how can they be young parents. But I read the synopsis and got it. lol. I have to say that I am looking forward to this film.
I've watched a number of Progeria documentaries and its an intriguing genetic condition. For me I look forward to the child actor they cast as the son, that role will be the one to look out for. As well as handling the aging process since people diagnosed with Progeria do have certain physical traits.

1% of Anything, where he played as a chaebol heir, who's a jerk. Like to yell and scream, and has zero patience.
He has a cousin, and both are kinda like in competition for family's inheritance.
His grandpa met a woman who is a school teacher. She's kind hearted, cute, and a bit clumsy at times. This teacher helped grandpa on his way to his wife's grave. She didn't know that he's head of a big company. And then grandpa announce to his grandsons, anyone who can married this teacher will get his inheritance.
And so, the journey begin, the jerk was humbled by a school teacher. I quite like it. Though KDW is so shouty, but the school teacher can hold her ground. Even KDW's character thought that the school teacher is a fox, who seduced old man. LOL.

Like most of the people are saying the films sounds like the Hindi film Paa. The film was more focused on the Kid with progeria who was played by Amitabh Bachhan who is over 60 yrs of age. The parents were played by his real life son Abhishek Bachhan and actress Vidhya Balan and even though they did tremendous job, the real hero was the son. So I am wondering if the Korean film will show more of the parents' anguish or the son's sufferings... also they need to pick a really good actor- younger or older because it is not easy to play a role such as this. If they pick a real boy then the challenge will be the make-up and it may look to garish if not done well...whichever, it sure sound like a tearjerker premise.

And Song Hye-Gyo is... well, Song Hye-Gyo. Only seen her in Full House (aaand her little cameo role in the movie The Grandmaster) and she wasn't that impressive but I that film is worth watching just because these two beautiful people are paired x).
I hope I'll find this movie online easily ;p. Thanks for the news!
