Contract marriage hijinks in store for Prime Minister and I
by girlfriday
So get this: Prime Minister and I turns out to be a contract marriage drama! Why didn’t it lead with its most interesting hook from the start? Here I was expecting some kind of live-in governess/nanny a la Mary Poppins by way of Suspicious Housekeeper, when in fact there’s a premise that makes the whole thing much more interesting. Sometimes all it takes is a scam wedding to go from bland to potential hootenanny.
The new KBS Monday-Tuesday drama comes from the PD of Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek and the writers of My Fair Lady, and stars Lee Beom-soo as the handsome single prime minister who is as much a celebrity as he is a politician. He was widowed eight years ago and raises three kids on his own, though he’s such a workaholic perfectionist and rigid in everything he does that he is by all accounts a terrible father. His character is described as always saying the right thing… but in the most aggravating way possible. Heh.
Yoon-ah plays a young writer who used to dream of writing like Jane Austen someday, but fast came to realize how little it pays to try to be Jane Austen. She’s the only daughter to a father with Alzheimer’s, and to earn the money for him to be cared for at a nursing center, she puts her skills to use for celebrity gossip rags. So she becomes a third-rate paparazzo to pay the bills, and then one day gets the assignment to cover the story every outlet desperately wants: a glimpse into the prime minister’s love life.
What happens instead is that in dogging him so relentlessly, she ends up mistaken as his girlfriend. And once compromising pictures get leaked, they enter into a contract relationship to preserve the prime minister’s image, which escalates into a contract marriage. What’s great about the setup is that even the second leads Yoon Shi-yoon and Chae Jung-ahn are the prime minister’s staffers, which means they have to be complicit in the ruse despite each having a vested interest in the couple not being a real couple. I dunno guys, I might have to watch this…
Prime Minister and I follows Mi-rae’s Choice and premieres December 9.

If only they cast better rather than once again choosing from in-house. Yoona doesn't do anything for me and I don't see the goddess good looks everyone keeps talking about. She is not the prettiest idol, not even in her group, much less all of Korea. The aegyo crap on a 20+ woman is irritating and not cute; for real why is she holding balloons in that picture.
In the hands of a good actress, this might have had more appeal, but after seeing her past work, my expectations are low, very low for this one.

The same could apply to both sides - what does it say about someone when they cannot tolerate negative opinions about a show or actor?

that person was not talking about the drama, she was talking about not liking the person -'the person does not do anything for me,' 'the person is not pretty,' etc. and she was talking about aegyo in ONE picture which is the odd one out in all promo photos so far.
if she watched the video and thought - 'I don't like her acting here', or 'I don't think they have chemistry,' or such criticisms about the drama itself then that would be much warranted don't you think?
oh wait, dramabeans readers are just elitist... only 'actors' can act and that 'hating' idols is okay... never mind that I am watching park shin hye in heirs, and for a recognized actress doing her typical roles - she is definitely not cutting it.

My point - which I did not make very clear - was that you should be countering the opinions they wrote, not the person themselves.
And while I think those opinions were over the top for a show that has not even aired yet, I still defend people's rights to say dumb things :D
And actually.. not sure what you mean by DB readers are elitists. I don't hate idols - but I hate it when the main attraction for a show is an idol. But having been attacked at least 94,000 times for saying that PSH leaves me cold, perhaps I have gotten a bit overly defensive :(

but it is true - what one says/write says more about them as a person... their attitude, values, etc. and was just pointing that out.
elitist because dramabeans readers in general prefer people with job description of actors/actress... never mind that some of them get roles for being good looking too or that some of them can not really act. and kdrama fans have that fan culture thing too - actor/actress is really pretty and/or not being able to separate actor/actress from the character.

what danagie is saying is not wrong. I think there are a lot of people out there who would agree with her and a lot of those who would disagree. It's her opinion and I don't see why she has to "get over" herself?
I just finished watching love rain and from that, I think Yoona actually improved, but I don't think she's ready to lead a drama. What I'm trying to say is that I never criticize an idol's acting chops just cux they are an idol. I think a lot of them actually end up doing very well (i.e, Micky). So not all dramabean-ers are 'elitists'.

Oh, I'll admit I'm elitist when it comes to actors. Not that Korean dramas are really somewhere to get picky about who they cast, because, "Hello pretty!" But putting someone like Yoona, who's acting skills are nothing more than okay at best against some heavy hitters like the three around her....she might ruin it.
She might be fine too. Acting is a talent, but its also something that can be learnt and improved on, so I guess there's nothing to do but wait and see.
Honestly I still can't scrub my brain of her and Park Jae Jung's terrible acting from You Are My Destiny, which was on when I was in Korea, and was forced to sit through with my in-laws everyday. >> Forgive me if I'm skeptical.

Eh, don't see anything wrong w/ what the poster stated and don't see how it is in any way a reflection on the said poster.
Otoh, responding to the post by making a PERSONAL comment/attack - that's a reflection on you (so the poster does not like Yoona for a variety of reasons - is that any reason to start attacking the poster; and what does it say about YOU that you feel you have to make personal attacks over a celeb that you personally don't know?).
And I don't see why there is any bearing on whether the "actor"/"actress" in question is an idol or "just" an actor/actress - since there are idols who CAN act and actors/actresses who can't and either way, the ones who can't get criticized.

did you read the conversation?
the elitist thing is a conversation with another user.
lol why am I suddenly 'attacking that person' when I said get over yourself? her first paragraph are full of reasons why that person hate yoona - reasons that yoona has no control over (her looks and how she was styled in one picture).
are we living in a world where it is okay to hate on people just because they are public figures and for absurd reasons like their looks? where does that stop though? can people hate on color of the skin too? and social status? *rolls eyes*

That poster has freaked many of us out. The pieces related to it said they wanted her to look different and more pure compared to the rest, but given the age gap, it just makes it feel creepy.
I've never seen Yoona act, so I am giving her a chance, but I also hope the videos and descriptions are the accurate ones in painting Da Jung's picture, not that icky concept of a poster.

All the person said was that they do not like her acting or personally find her pretty and that the whole balloon and aegyo concept is not what they think fits an adult.
I don't believe they commented on anything they have no right to comment on as a viewer, so I don't see why anyone thinks they have the right or obligation (we are all simply fans after all) to chastise them for that.
I get the same treatment a lot and I say the same thing then. If you (the abstract, collective 'you') can gush over someone's looks or work, I and anyone can also criticize them.

I hate aegyo. Absolutely hate it. But I'm used to it in dramas and if it's at least looney aegyo and not innocent flower aegyo, which does look like it from the clips, I'll be ok with it.
windsun33
December 1, 2013 at 11:34 AM
Aegyo can be used effectively, if it is done right. By that I mean where there might be a setup where the girl decides to try that method for a few scenes (and usually epic fails) to get some guy interested. But as a personality trait setup, I detest it on anyone over the age of.. oh 7 or so.
But in the case of the poster, I doubt that it was Yoona's idea to go that route.

By replying on the first commenter so that their comment can be seen first by other beanies. I don't want to pick a fight here because I love dramabeans but I generally like Yoona as an idol and an actress so I felt the need to defend her.
All I'm hoping is that people don't bash the drama, the actors and the producers before it airs, give it a chance, test out a few episodes that's all.
windsun33
December 1, 2013 at 6:45 PM
So if they up top, it is forced, but they wait a day it is not? Sorry but I don't quite get what you are saying here. That is almost like saying that the first person on Amazon to review a new product is "forcing" their opinion.
If you don't agree with their opinion, counter the opinion not the person.
Orion
December 1, 2013 at 5:42 PM
They replied to the comment they disagreed with, about the series looking interesting.
Also, despite it being natural to feel bad if someone does not like a celebrity you admire, liking said celebrity does not give you the right or make it your obligation to defend them, especially by very "politely" telling a user expressing their disagreement to be quiet.
Lastly, the person said they dislike Yoona's acting, so it stands to reason they have seen her act and are talking about those past performances. They are therefore not criticizing (not the same as bashing, as much as people confuse them) this series, just expressing worry over an actress they find bad.
So if you do love Dramabeans and don't want to pick a fight, respect other users' rights to their opinion, just as we respect yours. Say why you disagree, why you find Yoona pretty, a good actress, yes. Say you feel judging the series before it started seems unfair, yes. But asking someone to not speak their mind is way beyond your rights as a user here. The same goes for any user jumping at another's throat over differences in opinions about a topic.

Very well put. And there is also the fact that some actors have done well in some dramas and bad in others - and it is often hard to tell if that is the actor or the director that is at fault.
The one big reason why like this site as opposed to all the others is that for the most part the patients (fans) have not taken over the asylum. Everyone is free to express their opinion about shows, actors, etc. without getting mobbed to death by irate fans - at least that is how it has been up to now.
But lately I have seen some cases where the opinion was not challenged, but the morals or intelligence of the poster, and I don't think that is a direction any of us want this site to go in. So play nice people :)

Your opinion is yours and you shouldn't try to force them on anyone else. Most of the actresses are skinny and look malnourished but it could be because of surgery too. I think that the drama is really nice compared to some of the ones that are being aired. Thanks to the subbers, you are great.

I complete 100% agree with you danagie. Im not criticising Yoona for being unattractive and having the body of a malnourished 9 year old boy what I am criticising are people's opinions of her being some beautiful goddess of korea and the other opinion that many have that everything she does is just perfect. Those opinions are, in my opinion, wrong. She is nothing to look at and her talent is nothing to see or hear either. My opinon. So in conclusion I will not watch this drama as I found watching her in her past efforts have been pretty much like torture. No charisma either. Bleugh.

I am actually surprised that Empress Ki is not rating even higher than it is. I am not a fan of historical dramas, but I am watching that one. Perhaps one reason it does rate higher is because it shows some of the ugly parts of that time period.

I think it would have been higher if it wasn't for the controvercy before it airs. EK's timing is perfect and the competitions are pretty weak.
The writer's past sageuk wasn't a big hit back in 2006 but it went head to head with Jumong. The ratings went up when Jumong ended but it pretty much stuck in the high 20s.
I love historical dramas, mostly Korean and Chinese because I'm a little familiar with their history. I prefer Chinese historical romance dramas over Korean. I thought QIHM would be my all time favorite historical romance/ time-travel drama until Bu Bu Jing Xin came along. When it comes to fusion I prefer Korean, Conspiracy in the Court, Tree With Deep Roots are some of my top favorite.

Ratings matter, to a degree, because if ratings drop, then they start making rushed changes to draw people back in. The plot usually suffers and given they shoot as they air, the cast and crew also suffer.
It's not a good place to be for makers or viewers, so the circumstances for having good enough ratings give some more peace of mind.

Due mainly to the lack of any compelling dramas this season, I have been watching a lot of Japanese dramas, and the more I watch, the more striking the subtle differences become.
The "contract marriage" trope is one of a few things that seem to be k-drama only, or at least very rare outside of Korea. And it keeps getting recycled over and over - I assume because it is an easy way for the writer to hook people up without any, you know.. real plot.

jdramas seem to be heading to a shift in recent years - work-related (bankers, doctors, lawyers) dramas as well as dramas based from mangas have increased a lot. but they still have a lot of variety because even though sharing the same premise (example, dramas about doctors), they emphasize different things (doctor x - woman surgeon who refuse hierarchy and connection in workplace; code blue - doctors giving emergency care on site before transfer to hospital; jin - doctor going back in time, etc.).
contract marriage trope also exists in jdramas and twdramas... not as much as kdramas though.

Looking over the list of J-dramas on drama.net, the range of subjects is much wider than what we see in k-dramas. Not saying that those particular shows are good or bad, but as you noted there are a lot more "middle class" working people dramas. It is not all about rich vs poor.

jdramas have a lot of genres too - supernatural, psychological, medical, sports, family, school, etc...
kdramas supposedly have different genres too, but in reality it is just makjang romance most of the time? heirs was touted as high school romance comedy - it is definitely not that. mirae's choice is romance comedy - it is not that too. answer me 1994 was promising, it seemed that it will be different but in latest episode 13 - it is focusing on the romance with a hanging on second lead (?!) forgetting its premise of basketball and country bumpkins in the city.
but kdramas' tropes are like addiction... LOL

what i meant was that the 'inclusion of contract marriage in the drama' is information already available as early as when information about casting confirmations were available... since they read news about kdramas in general as well as able to understand korean - the information should be something they should have come across at one point or another before this?
then again, them not being really interested in the drama itself is something they were very vocal about... it can not be helped. different people, different likes.

I'm not a fan of bubbly characters, but Da Jung is also batsh*t crazy, so I think I'm going to like her, if Yoona does well.
I'm hoping for a helpless bunch of fancy politicians being driven mad by a chaotic woman. That would be my wish for the overall flow of things.

Hey, it worked for Kim Tae Hee in 'My Princess'. Might just work here.
Dramabeans aught to include a yearly award for best "YaAH!" of the year. I still flick through the opening of 'Secret Garden' to watch Kim Sa-rang's epic "YaAH!" after Ha Ji Won b****-slaps her in in the department store lobby.
Okay, I also flick back through that episode to watch Ha Ji Won cavorting and glaring in green khaki and green leather, but it's STILL a great "YaAH!"

I really don't like Yoona and avoid her dramas, but in the teaser she reminds me of Soo-young with her lovely acting in DAC so I'll probably watch this one now too. Plus the premise sounds more interesting with the contract marriage. I'd love some rom-com and hope that KBS delivers (SBS and tvN are my favorite channels this year).

I don't really think Yoona is that bad. I had never seen any of her recent dramas, so went and started watching Love Rain, and though I have mixed feelings about the show, I don't feel that Yoona was all that bad. Have not finished it, Only up to ep8.5 so I may change my mind later. But at this point I think she is better than a couple of other actresses playing current dramas (not naming any names here, you know who you are :D ).

Ah, really? Well, thanks for that. It still wouldn't make me want to watch her previous dramas because she can't do melo scenes imo. At least she's better in the cutesy stuff based on the teasers. Didn't find it annoying at all like I found her in SNSD's MVs, her CFs, and in some variety shows she's guested in.

Yoona's not half-bad as people make her out to be. I thought she was pretty ok in Love Rain, especially when she played the daughter character. And damnnnnn, she's gorgeous. I might just watch this!

I agree, she was good at the more lighthearted parts of Love Rain - and she and Jang Geun-seok had good chemistry. Sooyoung's more natural as an actress, but Yoona's lost a lot of her early stiffness and is quite enjoyable to watch.
She doesn't yet have the chops to do melo (JGS pulled all the emotional weight for the two of them in LR's melo parts) but PM & I is a romcom so that should not be a problem.

Got to agree with pogo. She wasn't half bad as the daughter, but that was partly because Jang Geun Suk was there to camouflage her limitations. Lee Beom Soo may very well be able to do the same though.
I wasn't remarkably unenthused about this drama before. Correction, I was pretty much resolved not to watch. But this latest twist at least has me curious. I'm not sold yet, but I was completely uninterested a moment ago.

This could go either way, good or bad.
I was intrigued when Sound of Music was mentioned in the drama's first descriptions.
I love that movie to pieces.
But now I guess it's become even more interesting.
I love Lee Bum Soo. I like Yoona, I love Yoon Shi Yoon, and I don't hate Chae Jung Ahn. She can make a hateful character bearable,if not relatable. Props to her in that department. And I like how her character profile looks soo Olivia Pope-ish.

Age gaps don't usually bother me but they just look too far apart in age and it's distracting. I mean, she looks like a teenager and he could easily pass for her father. Meh. I'll probably check it out if only because I find Yoon Shi Yoon beyond adorable.

Yay contract marriage and related hijinks! I like this type of premise and can actually see it being a very fun and enjoyable ride. I'm looking forward to it. No comment on the Yoona thing because I haven't seen her before. But I hope with all the negativity towards her that she can work hard and put in at the very least a decent effort.

I'll personally keep my judgements for when the show airs. There's only so much you can guess from teasers and pictures. I've just been so wrong in the past! (most recently Mirae's Choice! arrggh) It looks interesting enough for me to give it an initial chance and I really like the male lead. I like older guys too so I'm looking forward to the future romance. I just PRAY they have some sort of chemistry.

That is something that is easy to forget. Numerous times in the past where the show actually turned out to be much worse or much better than what you would expect from pre-pub and teasers. Secrets was on NOBODY's radar at first, but I decided to try it anyway - and we all know what happened to the ratings there. So, I no longer dismiss dramas until I have actually seen at least a couple of episodes.

I recommend watching 4. The first two are often different to the rest of the series, in the sense that they are trying to hook audiences so they will come back the next week. So they are often full of things that the creators know sell.
Take 'Big'. The first two episodes were exciting and great. Then it's like someone flipped a switch. Some series rock for 2 episodes and then go bad, some suck and then form their own style. So 4 is the surest bet for such 16-20 episode shows.

You are right - and I actually nearly always end up watching at least 4. Quite often the first episode or two is just the character and plot setup - the execution of that setup is what matters.
I don't know why, but Panda & Hedgehog comes to mind - that premise could have been so cute and cool, and seemed OK in the first couple of episodes, but 3 and 4 rapidly turned into "WTF am I watching this for?" moments.

I might be watching this drama. The teaser is interesting. However, I think that I will watch Warm Words first then this one second. Remember it will be a three way battle as Warm Words is tomorrow too. I am not sure it is the same time slot though. However, I will be watching Warm Words first then this one. I will watch Empress Ki but that is later on marathon style.

Same here. I'm planning to watch Warm words. And I'm giving this one a try because marriage contract concept is fun to me and I really don't care much about Yoona since I haven't seen any of her previous works. Empress Ki is really great, but waiting fot the subs is really a war with patience!

I love contract marriage. Am so going to watch it since I love LBS.
Also have read the other posts, I am not a fan of the female lead ever since 9 Ins 2 Outs. And yes I've watched her other dramas because I've liked the story. She hasn't improved. But, but having said that I see a smidgeon of chemistry. Thanks goodness. Hoping that being with such sunbaes will inspire her to act more intensely. Been waiting for Yoona to put more intensity into her acting.
After saying that love the whole cast, drama, please go good and don't tank on us. I've already had to write off Mirae's Choice. I would love to watch a good rom com.
