Answer Me 1994: Episode 19
by girlfriday
The new millennium wipes the slate clean and sets us up for the final game (thank goodness). In the search for answers, everyone muses on the role of Fate—is it a real thing, an entity out to mess with us all, or just another name for good old-fashioned timing?

EPISODE 19: “Do you believe in Fate?”
It’s January 2000, and Samcheonpo narrates that despite his hopes, the world did not end because of Y2K after all, and he still has to report to the office for his first day of work. Haitai makes sure to rub it in after chatting on the phone with girlfriend Ae-jung and telling her how much he loves her.
Samcheonpo tells us that he failed spectacularly at getting into grad school, and finally joined the rank and file at a big company. His job: the all-important, highly specialized Copy & Fax Minion. We watch him struggle to make ten copies (he makes a thousand instead, ha) and he narrates: “The world should’ve ended.”
Yoon-jin stuck through the hard times at her job even when they couldn’t afford to pay her, so now she’s in her third year at the office. She comes home the bedraggled breadwinner, while Samcheonpo irons. Heh, they’re already like a married couple, and she warns him not to touch her tonight because she’s tired.
Binggeure is already wearing lab coats and putting in rounds at the hospital, and Na-jung is busying herself with the new goal of getting a driver’s license. Samcheonpo argues with her about TV rights (FinKL vs. Heo Jun), and gets attacked. He tells us she returned from Australia with her personality intact.
Mom and Dad are in good spirits because Dad has just been rehired by the Twins after a two-year hiatus, which he spent working at a friend’s business. Mom steams crabs for the occasion, and Na-jung tears into them with so much gusto I’m jealous. Dad wonders if she starved while in Australia, but she doesn’t pay them any mind and just chows down to her heart’s content.
The doorbell rings and Haitai returns to the kitchen to tell everyone to hurry up and grab their cameras, and then Chilbongie shoves him into the room for a big jolly, “I’m HE~RE!” Aw. Everybody cheers, and Na-jung just glances up while stuffing her face some more, since she saw him just the other night.
He comes bearing a chocolate cake for Mom and a 30-year scotch for Dad, and the other guys marvel at his memory. Dad gets walloping drunk right away, and the other kids get excited when Binggeure mentions that Chilbongie is doing a talk show interview soon.
As they eat he notices a piece of crab on Na-jung’s face and stops to peel it off and wipe her cheek clean with his hand, and it catches everyone’s eye at the table.
The gang drinks upstairs after dinner, and Chilbongie confirms that he’s due in America by the end of January. Poo. He’s taking some extra time off while he can, and the other guys suggest it’s a good chance to get his driver’s license. They tell him that Na-jung has already scoped out a surefire academy in Jeonju that promises to get you a license, and the two exchange an awkward look. Road trip?
Road trip! They get on the bus to go to Jeonju, and Chilbongie sighs at the amount of stuff to be memorized on the written test. Na-jung tells him it’s a piece of cake and that the trick isn’t memorizing, but comprehending.
He pouts. Aw, this brings back happy memories of the time she tried to tutor him in school. My favorite thing about Chilbongie is that he’s realistically terrible at studying.
Na-jung scores 100 on her test, as expected, and then goes to find Chilbongie expecting to congratulate him. He tells her he failed with a sheepish grin, and then we cut to the whole group laughing hysterically at the story as he tells them he scored 44.
One by one, Binggeure and Haitai get called away on boyfriend duty, and then even Samcheonpo gets the bright idea to call Yoon-jin while she’s sitting next to him. Heh. That just leaves Na-jung and Chilbongie alone again for an awkward beat.
He says he’s going to retake the driving test tomorrow, and asks if it’s okay if he sleeps over in Binggeure’s room. He looks at the medical texts on Binggeure’s desk with a smile (hilariously failing to read the English title to himself), and notices Garbage’s notebooks with a long face.
Binggeure has gone to the hospital to visit Garbage, but finds him sleeping after a long surgical rotation. He just leaves a coffee and a post-it on his desk and heads out.
Samcheonpo reminds Yoon-jin about his sunbae’s wedding tomorrow, and gets thwacked for trying to sneak up like a zombie and steal a kiss. Points for style though.
Mom is a happy camper now that the house is bustling again, and sighs that all they need is Garbage and it’ll be like old times. Binggeure and Haitai freeze awkwardly at that, knowing his fallout with Na-jung keeps him away. Dad sighs that it’s been a year since he’s seen his best friend because of it all, though he has plans to see him soon. Mom presents Dad with a pair of matching red mittens she knitted for their family—Mom, Dad, Na-jung, and Joonie. He characteristically complains while still putting them on, even hitting Binggeure for trying to steal them.
The parents wonder about Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo and why they aren’t getting married now that both are gainfully employed. Dad jokes that they’ll just have kids right here in this house and never leave.
At the wedding later that day Samcheonpo is as doting a boyfriend as ever, running to get Yoon-jin the food she wants, or answering questions about how long they’ve been dating in number of days, not years.
But when their friends ask about when they’re getting married, Samcheonpo says he has no plans for marriage. Yoon-jin is caught off-guard, clearly not on the same page, and Haitai sees it written all over her face.
She makes painfully insincere attempts to agree with him, and excuses herself to go to the restroom. Haitai yells at Samcheonpo for his thickheaded ways, and he just sits there totally oblivious.
Chilbongie and Na-jung are on their way back from Day 2 of driving tests, and he’s failed yet again. He asks her not to rat him out to their friends, and she deadpans, “Tell me the truth. You’re dumb, right?” Pfft.
He swears it’s because he didn’t have time to study last night, but is determined to pass tomorrow. She acknowledges his persistence, wondering if that’s what got him to the major league.
Samcheonpo comes by to ask Yoon-jin if she’ll come to a movie tomorrow with the gang, but she answers noncommittally that she’ll see. She answers a late-night call from a work sunbae, and Samcheonpo gets all rankled that he’s calling so late. She reminds him that they’re just friends, “besides, it’s not like you and I are getting married or anything.” Oouuuuch. Please, take the hint.
He doesn’t, but thankfully Na-jung and Haitai are around to pull their hair out and scream at him to hurry up and tell Yoon-jin that he wants to marry her. Samcheonpo argues that he DOES want to marry her, but not yet—he’ll tell her when the time is right.
They try their damnedest to make him understand that he has to let her know that he intends to marry her, even if it’s someday in the future, but he doesn’t understand why. It’s like banging your head against a wall, and Haitai and Na-jung nearly explode trying to reason with him.
The group makes plans to meet at the theater later that night, and Na-jung runs off in anticipation of getting her license today. Binggeuere worries that Chilbongie will fail again today, but Na-jung says he couldn’t possibly unless he was a total moron…
…And of course he failed again. Pwahaha. He explains how close he was to passing with a goofy grin, and Na-jung smiles back like she’s patronizing a simpleton. They realize there isn’t time for a whole meal before the movie, and he happily suggests this new bakery he discovered that has the name of some dinosaur or something (it’s Tous Les Jours, which he reads like it’s English).
She takes his word for it, only to arrive at the bakery and realize what he meant, and has a grand ol’ time piling on the jokes, which go totally over his head. She asks him to go inside and order the Tyrannosaurus bread, or on second thought, the whole Jurassic Park set. He just smiles and nods, repeating her words like it’s a real order. LOL.
Haitai and girlfriend Ae-jung are the only ones to meet them at the theater, Binggeure and Die-Die having ditched them to watch the sex movie that’s playing on the other screen. Everyone gulps awkwardly at that.
Ae-jung is shocked that Haitai is actually friends with famous baseball star Chilbongie, who says he’s heard a lot about her and that they reunited on New Year’s Eve. He adds that he and Na-jung did too, which startles her.
They settle into their seats for the movie, but then Chilbongie tenses up when the man next to him introduces himself as a reporter who interviewed him once. Uh-oh. He remains wary of the reporter’s presence the whole time, and then chases him out afterwards.
He asks the reporter not to write the story he’s about to write, and the reporter doesn’t look inclined to let it go. “She’s your girlfriend, right?”
Chilbongie: “She isn’t. Not yet. I like her on my own.” He confesses that he likes her and promises to give him an exclusive when he’s officially in a relationship, and the reporter softens at that. Whew, bullet dodged.
Dad goes to see his bestie (Garbage’s dad) while he’s in the hospital for a regular checkup, and they chitchat good-naturedly with zero hard feelings on either end about the kids’ broken engagement. Dad asks after Garbage and says it’s time he meet with him, and promises his buddy he won’t beat his son or anything.
Garbage runs down to meet Dad, head hanging, and sits down in preparation to hear the worst. Garbage apologizes for not calling and apologizes again, and Dad tells him to stop saying sorry: “It’s not your fault. It’s not anyone’s fault.”
Dad says he’s okay now, and tells Garbage to call Mom at least once a month. He promises, all quivering lip and shaky voice like a little boy.
It’s when Dad takes a deep breath and calls him “Son” that the tears start to spill uncontrollably. Dad says he opposed the two of them dating because, “I don’t know what you thought about it, but you’re a son to me.”
He starts to say after they lay Na-jung’s oppa Hoon to rest… but gets choked up just bringing up his son’s name. Dad says that after he died, Garbage called them mother and father and filled their lives, making each day a little better. “And I was grateful.”
“But when you said you were dating Na-jungie, I was disappointed, and worried—Ah, so I’ll lose another son this way.” He admits to being worried for Na-jung, to being angry at the both of them for breaking up, and thinking of yelling at them until they fixed things.
But he sighs that things don’t happen in life the way you want them to. “And what you are to me… Could I live the rest of my life not seeing you? I’m okay. I’m okay now, so call home once in a while.” Man, nobody can break my heart like Dad.
He chuckles, “Still, saying everything on my mind to my son for the first time in a long time feels nice.” He’s back to his nagging self by the time Garbage walks him out to a cab, and tells him to wear a coat when it’s cold.
He digs out those red family mittens that Mom knitted for him and stuffs them in Garbage’s hand without explanation, insisting he wear them. Awwwww, Daaaaaaaad.
The air is still frosty between Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo, and he trails after her with the reminder that he made reservations at a French restaurant for tonight. Haitai bets they’ll break up, Binggeure bets they won’t, and Na-jung bets they’ll break up at least once. Dad: “I bet you’ll all be dead in three seconds.” Ha. Everyone skedaddles.
Dad heads out for drinks with his team and Mom takes Joonie to Masan, which leaves Na-jung staring at the family car keys with an evil glint in her eye. She asks Haitai and Binggeure who wants to be the first to be taken for a ride, and they tiptoe away gingerly.
Right on cue, poor Chilbongie comes by sing-song-ing, “Na-jung-ah, come out and play~!” Binggeure and Haitai mime at him to run for the hills, but they’re too late to save him.
He doesn’t seem worried until they get in the car and she tells him it’s her first time actually driving in the city and not on a practice course, pffft. I’m so scared for you. Also, who gives licenses away like that?
It doesn’t exactly put him at ease when she suddenly forgets which pedal is which, and things just get worse as she takes him on the tensest drive ever, screaming in fear while crawling along in the street.
Samcheonpo ends up stuck at an office party much later than he’d planned, and has to call Yoon-jin to apologize and cancel their dinner plans. She then answers a call from her sunbae, asking if she’s busy tonight.
Samcheonpo ends up in one of those horribly awkward situations where his work superiors are drunkenly asking him to call his girlfriend over so they can meet her, and despite his attempts to explain that they’re fighting and she can’t come, they make him feel pressured enough to grit his teeth and make the call.
Naturally Yoon-jin says no because she hates those things, besides the fact that he isn’t exactly her favorite person right now.
Na-jung and Chilbongie finally make it to his place in one piece, and it only took them the entire day to drive across town. Ha. She’s way too freaked out to even consider driving back on her own, and asks to leave the car here while she takes a cab home. Hahaha.
Samcheonpo counts down the seconds till the noraebang clock runs out, only to be told they paid for an extra hour and won’t leave until his girlfriend shows herself. Oy. He tries calling again, but now her phone is off.
The situation inside just gets worse, so he heads out to try calling one last time. He gives up when she doesn’t answer, thinking it’s over. But when he looks up, Yoon-jin walks through the door, all dolled up and prepared to do the thing she hates, just for him. Aw. Marry her, you fool!
Na-jung and Chilbongie stand in the street waiting for a cab, when Mom calls in a panic to say that Dad got drunk at the team party and fell and broke some bones. Oh no. Someone has to go to the hospital to sign for surgery, and Mom’s in Masan, so Na-jung has to go.
Na-jung starts to freak out, crying at the lack of cabs when she needs to go to Dad. Chilbongie watches her tensely for a moment, and then caves: “Hand me your keys.” What. If he knows how to drive, I’ll die laughing.
Sure enough, he gets behind the wheel and weaves through traffic with ease. Na-jung gapes at him, and he smiles sheepishly, “So… I was going to tell you, really…” Hahahahaha. She snaps at him that they’ll discuss it later, though she totally gives him the death glare of doom.
Yoon-jin sings a duet (Trip Sketch’s “Fate”) with Samcheonpo in front of his coworkers, and totally makes his night.
Na-jung and Chilbongie pace back and forth outside the operating room, and the doc comes out to say that Dad will be fine. He’s got a bunch of broken bones that’ll need to heal, but he’s okay.
Na-jung’s legs finally give out once the relief hits, and Chilbongie catches her before she falls. He sits her down and puts an arm around her to comfort her.
At home, Samcheonpo comes to Yoon-jin’s room and says he has something to give her. Ack, she looks like she’s expecting a ring, which makes me positive he’s going to muck it up instead. He tells her to close her eyes and put out her hand, so she does, palm down, totally expecting him to slide a ring on her finger. While she has her eyes closed he futzes with something, and then tells her to open her eyes.
She opens them to find three bankbooks tucked into her fingers, ha. He says that he really likes her, and that he wants to do a fancy proposal too, “But I’m a person who needs a plan. What can I do, when this is who I am?”
He asks for her understanding, because who else in the world would? He tells her that one account is for a house, one is savings, and the last… is for their wedding. Aw. “These funds haven’t matured. But when they do, I’ll propose.” Best non-proposal proposal ever. He asks her to be patient till then, and hugs her sweetly. And then he adds that if that sunbae calls her again, he’ll rip his head off. Ha.
Na-jung finally calms down once she knows that Dad is okay, and then she tells Chilbongie to fess up and hand over his wallet. Haha, caught. He cringes and hands it over, and she finds his driver’s license right there.
He swears he was going to tell her, and she just rails at him for making her the idiot. I think you’re pretty even on that score. He pouts, “Well what was I supposed to do? I have to go back to America in half a month, and I’m out of time.” He fesses up to doing it on purpose, not really knowing what else to do after seeing her again like that on New Year’s Eve. He felt like this was his last chance, and if he lost it it’d really be the end.
He asks if she remembers what he asked when they parted—if they met again years later and she didn’t have anyone by her side, for her to date him. He wrings his hands nervously and takes a deep breath: “Na-jung-ah, I like you a lot. I liked you when I first saw you, and I still… I like you now.”
Mom breaks the tension with a call, and Chilbongie goes to get them some coffee. When Mom hears that she was able to get to the hospital so soon because she was with Chilbongie, she says it’s good luck that he was there, and tells Na-jung to buy him something to eat. “Heaven helped us.” Na-jung looks up at Chilbongie coming toward her, perhaps with new eyes.
Na-jung: Sometimes there are moments when I really feel like there is a God. Even if there isn’t, there are times I feel like there has to at least be a something like Fate to explain certain situations. This exquisite coincidence, this unbelievable timing, this ingenious reversal—it’s possible that my fate is playing a game with me.
Or a writer is. Just sayin’.
Garbage sleepwalks to his bunk, where his buddy tells him about Dad’s surgery. Garbage scrambles to run out the door, but his buddy tells him that was already hours ago: “You’re late. You’re beyond late.” Augh, always Oppa’s curse, isn’t it?
Garbage: Fate is damned. Fate is cruel. And Fate… is strong. Fate throws us into dilemmas, traps us in corners where we can’t do a thing, and in the bitter end, even ignores our sincere prayers. That’s how Fate is damned. That’s how Fate is cruel and strong.
As Oppa narrates, we go back to New Year’s Eve, when he finishes his work and steps outside as it starts to snow. But as soon as he does, someone runs out to say that his professor is calling him back. He gets delayed, stuck in traffic on his way, and gets into a fender-bender that sets him back even more. By the time he reaches Na-jung’s house, all the lights are off and everyone is asleep. He sits out in his car, not even able to step foot inside.
Chilbongie tells Na-jung he has a few more days till he has to leave, so he’ll be back tomorrow to see her and Dad. She walks him down the corridor, and he smiles after her.
Chilbongie: Another reason why Fate is cruel and strong: timing you can’t predict. This is how Fate is cruel.
Na-jung walks him to the elevator to send him off, and the door slides open to reveal Garbage standing inside. Smiles fade and faces freeze all three ways.
Na-jung: Fate pushes me to the edge of a cliff, makes it so that I can’t budge, and in the end passes me the ball. In the end Fate is choosing. Now I just have to make a choice.
COMMENTS
Yes, you do. Please, for the love of Fate, make a choice and make it quick. I’m glad that the conclusion isn’t that she’s just going to leave it up to Fate to decide for her, because that would be the worst kind of deflating after waiting 21 episodes to find out the answer. Fate as timing, I can get behind, since after all love is just one of those things that lives or dies by timing. But in the end choice is what really matters.
I wonder what kept Oppa from going inside the house on New Year’s Eve—was being late worse than not showing up at all? Was it meaningless if he missed that window? Or was not going inside the damning choice, not the missed timing? Perhaps it won’t matter, as New Year’s Eve clearly isn’t all there is, and they still have to deal with the fallout of their relationship. It’s yet another thing that happened offscreen for this couple that drives me bonkers, but at least in this case the breakup was actually a fizzling out, and the feelings left over are the ones that matter, once they deal with them.
Oppa just has this horrible history with being late—late to show up, late to realize feelings, laaaaate to act on them. I hope he isn’t now doubling up on his problem by shooting himself in the foot and giving up because of lateness. That seems like the worst thing he could do. I dunno, Fate’s a bitch and all, but showing up seems far more important than being on time. Having a rival in Chilbongie lit a fire under his ass once before (er, sort of) so maybe seeing him with Na-jung now will get him to act. Who knows, maybe his whole character arc is in learning to actually get the timing right.
Chilbongie was hilarious in this episode with his blatant lies about driving just to spend time with Na-jung, and of course the show does its classic twist of taking something funny and making it meaningful when you see it under a different light. I still can’t believe he didn’t say a word when she spent an entire day driving him from Shincheon to Gangnam or was calling him stupid, but that’s just his style, and why he breaks hearts. My favorite thing is that he is actually still endearingly dumb regardless, just maybe a little less than he was letting on. Ha.
I loved Samcheonpo’s story in this episode, and his whole conversation with an incredulous Haitai and Na-jung cracked me up. But it’s great to see him step up, be consistent to his nebbishy worrywart character, and still make the proposal that hits the heart. Who needs a flashy ring when the person you love shows you he’s planning for his life to be with you?
And of course Dad tugs all the heartstrings, because he’s amazing and he’s Dad. Garbage’s place in the family was always the stuff that touched me the most at the start of the series, and I was sad about it falling to the background when he started dating Na-jung. It was nice to be reminded that his relationship to Mom and Dad can be mended and forgiven separately, as a son—that warmed my heart more than anything, because Dad doesn’t need him to marry Na-jung to love him as his child. It’s the best kind of I-just-love-you-for-being-you statement there is.

Sigh, this is why dramas trying to remake the mere idea of another drama will fail terribly in my book. They get so fixated on the idea of the drama that it becomes a gimmick rather than a story. A story with characters that everyone loves.

I like 1994 though...1997 has a special place in my drama heart, but '94 has lots of heart-wrenching moments too, along with a lovable cast, more or less.

I stopped watching it too. I'm so angry that they stayed fixated to this husband-mystery idea, because the characters were great. It should have just been given it's own idea.

ugh, i don't know anymore! i've skipped a few episodes because i just want to read the re-caps before i even get into it. reading the recap for ep 19, i don't think i'm going to watch it...idk...it is too rushed for nj to be falling for cb. i never was into cb because i felt him too quiet in his liking and pursuit of nj, even if he did take some action later on. yes, oppa is pretty consistent on the lateness, but i think it's because of his feelings on his position in the family; so he's indecisive.
idk, i might not watch ep 20 or 21 until i've read the recaps. hopefully the ending is something i'll be happy about because I DO NOT want to feel like how I did after Heirs ended! ugh! what an ending! ugh!

i really missed chil bong, and his smiling face. :)
i don't think chil bong is stupid.
i mean, he didn't know mentor, as in the english word, but he knew what it means in korean? i don't know.
also, he seemed to learn conversational japanese skills enough to conduct interviews in the language.

Chilbong strikes me as a more hands-on, street smart, practically good kind of guy. He just isn't book smart. It's like words fail him.
So he's not stupid, just smart in another way. High EQ and IQ in terms of bodily-kinesthetic but lower IQ on the math and inquisition side. Hahah.

I've only been following recaps so I was feeling more for Na-Jung than the male leads (so I was perfectly fine with Garbage), but something about episode 18 made me jump ship. In love with Chilbongie now! Omg.

Oh fellow Chilbong shippers...I feel so heartbroken. I know I posted many times how I'm positive Oppa is the husband and I even congratulated Oppa shippers, but something just snapped within me. I always wanted to be Team NJ, trust me, but my heart refuses to let go of my delusional 1% faith that CB is the husband. But my brain is now fully operating after a week of break and told me how foolish I was being. I am now seriously 100% certain Oppa is the husband with no doubts about it. I don't think I can watch or comment on episodes 20 and 21. I felt my heart drop after reading some analysis that made so much sense I am forced to some to a realization that CB just isn't the husband. This writer crushed and stomped on my heart for leading me this far, I think I'm going a little cuckoo. I for one was never a fan of love triangles and thought I could handle this, but the more I think about it, it just makes me more sad. By making CB pursue NJ even now, makes it more impossible for me to accept a rushed happily ever after for him without NJ. I'm honestly not going to be happy with any outcome. I am also wondering, why did every single one of the couples in AM94 end up with their first love? Is it that common in South Korea O.O?

Agreed, me and the 128 people who liked your comment.
I just noticed that when there's a comment that is pro chilbong and pro nabong couple, it gets a lot of likes. But, there are more comments that are pro trash. So, I guess a lot of team chilbong are staying silent to avoid adding fire to the flame wars.
Well, to all silent pro chilbong, I want to direct you to the fantastic shipper thread on soompi for our "miracle couple' (najung-chilbong). You can spazz there all you want.

Huh. So Chilbongie is back in the running? When I jumped off the Chilbongie-Na Jung ship, I went right into the water—if it’s not CB, then it can’t be anyone else. But I'm not too excited about the way he was written back into the story, too abrupt. If there was another Na Jung I would have wanted Bongie to be with her and this Na Jung to stay with Oppa. A girl can dream, right?

agreeeeed. i love chilbong to peices but i dont like how suddenly na-jung feels like she has to choose when i feel like she never even struggled with the question of "are these friendly or romantic feelings" in the past. not when he stared moony eyed at her, not when he confessed, not really even when he was preparing to leave for japan and she found her picture in his cap. she didn't react to any of those things, but suddenly she &yoon-jin act kinda awkward seeing him on tv in the previous ep and she's talking about having to make a choice between him and garbage now... idk. to me it feels rushed and kinda out of step with the rest of the show (i really can't remember a time when i felt like she might possibly reciprocate his feelings even a little bit, but my memory is crap so if i'm wrong someone please refer me to it lol). as much as i love them together, it'd feel too weird for him to be the husband, because up until the script told her to be conflicted about him in these last two episodes, she didn't seem to see him as anything more than a friend idk

I have to agree. At this point, I kind of hope Chilbongie gets the girl, but Na Jung hasn't ever showed interest or confusion at her feelings for him. So the choice doesn't really make sense this late in the game. It should have been introduced earlier (like 7 or 8 episodes ago) and then it really would have been a struggle.
It makes me kind of sad to see this beautiful relationship (Oppa and Na Jung) that we spent so long getting just...fizzle out. I know its possible in reality, but this is a TV show. idek...

That right there is the problem I have with the Show (or the writing, you choose). The end of Oppa and Na Jung's relationship is what I have a problem with: these two had feelings for each other right from the get-go (at least on Na Jung's side) and now they are just no more, lack of communication or whatever.
So, are they saying that these two JUST grew apart--I'm not buying that for one bit! Should have found a more believable break-up idea. Is all I'm saying. Not that I want Oppa to be with Na Jung, hoh! But their relationship was more believable.

I dunno. I think a break up like that is pretty realistic. I know oppa was in Busan and they worked out, but he wasn't there for a very long time and Na Jung could visit him anytime she wanted to cuz it's cheAper and closer. Long distance takes a toll on any relationship. You mentally and personally grow in two years, and after those years, you're just in two different places in your lives. That's why I hate the fast forwarding because we don't get to see that. We just assume.

December 23, 2013 at 8:10 PM
it makes sense if you think about the theme of the previous episodes which was "FEAR of losing your love". So, to me, I took Najung and Oppa 'breaking up without breaking up' as more like -- Both sides realized that they were inadvertently hurting the other party by being unable to keep up with their relationship they wanted to and ALSO maybe both sides felt like the other party had fallen out of love (for instance, when Oppa couldn't answer NJ's phonecalls because he lost his cell phone - she could've misunderstood it as him not caring. Same when she didn't reply to his e-mail. we already know from the Busan epiode that Oppa feared that NJ might not love him anymore because he couldn't be there for her like he wanted to)
Hence, it makes sense that if they are both still in love (but believe that the other party doesn't love them anymore) that they would hold off having the conversation that might actually confirm their "fear" that their love has ended. So NJ deals with it by manic eating and Oppa suffers alone and being constantly sick.
Maybe it's because my personality is similar in the way that I will ignore things (that I fear the outcome of) for as long as possible because i don't want the outcome to be confirmed

Still hoping for oppa and na jung ending. To summarize my thoughts briefly because while I could write an essay as to why I think it should happen, I'll just say that their relationship is the first fictional one which made me feel warm on the inside. And that's all I'm going to say. Chilbong is great, amazing in fact I love his character with all my heart but I never felt the sparks with his and na jungs relationship. This is just my opinion and I can see and appreciate the appeal of a chilbong and na jung ending but it just doesnt feel right. Ah this roller coaster of emotions will finally be over next week.. I feel kind of sad but at the same time I'm happy I'll finally be able to breathe easily lol

I guess it's a preference thing then? Because I never really saw the spark in oppa/NJ relationship either. I always saw them as a cute oppa/dongsaeng before being a couple. Sure, I would smile at their cute scenes and go aww..but it's chilbong and NJ that made my heart race and made me all giddy. But, at this point, even though I want chilbong for na jaeong, if oppa steps up his game and finally get the timing right and na jaeong accept him back then I guess I would have no qualms about the show's ending.
because at the end of it all, we just want the characters to be happy. so, whoever na jaeong chooses will be my choice. :)

yeah i get it. it is a preference thing. i think in most regards, especially in terms of relationships, love and what not opinions differ based on the way a person perceives things and on their idea of what feels right. i think the main reason i saw no sparks was because the lack of reaction on na jung's part like i totally get it but until i see some sort of reciprocation of feelings on her part i won't buy the couple. if they can manage to show me some of that then i will definitely be okay with a cb/nj ending. you see what i mean right? i'm not trying to criticize your opinion at all and i really apologize if it seems that way.
i do agree with your last point however. as long as the ending can show me that chilbong and na jung are happy together and conclude it in a satisfactory way i would have no issues with that scenario whatsoever.
i mean come on i think we'd all be lying if we said that regardless of who we were rooting for we weren't swayed by the other at one point in the drama. :P

Until Na-jung gives birth to her first child and that child calls CB Appa, there is still a chance.
Lets put Ditto on replay and ride this out to the bitter end.

Everyone in the answer me world will get a happy ending. But CB has no other prospects and there are only 2 episodes left. If it's a guy that we (women) don't like and he tags along by lying for an excuse to do so, we'd be upset. The more we dislike him, the more we'd be upset.
If it is a guy whose company we enjoy, we wouldn't be upset at all.
If it is a guy that we like, well then, we'd be more than ok with it. Isn't that so?
For a viewer to be upset at CB for lying about not having a driver's license in order to take that road trip with NJ reflects the viewer's relative disfavor towards CB (compared to his competitor), NOT NJ's.

I usually like Cb but he irritated me this episode. First with all the lies then with the proposal I just could not understand why a guy like CB who would get a million different wonderful girls pine over a girl who has shown no interest in him for years even after avoiding her for years knowing she is happily dating someoneelse. It all seemed majorly off to me.
Maybe it s from bias but i genuinely liked him before and missed him when he was not on for 2 episodes.
Btw did anyone notice NJ beinge eating or is that what she always does it just seemed like she was terribly depressed and coping it up with food. Again bias maybe.

I don't mean any offence, but if that's your reason (including the whole "why doesn't he go for someone else"), then I'm pretty sure you would've stopped liking him a long time ago because this isn't the first episode that has shown him liking NJ.
Also, I don't think you can just tell someone to stop liking someone else. If you've invested so much time and emotion into loving someone, it's really hard to just stop.
Again, if Oppa's and NJ's relationship didn't work out because of distance and CB still loved NJ despite not being in contact with her, that's quite telling.
So I don't feel it's fair to dislike a character because of that.

1st it's annoying but it's great in fate
if there's no cb that day, will nj still go ride or will nj come in the right time save dad??
lying but he admitted is, confessed because nj asking his reason
well it wasn't a great deal, it saved them actually
and nj know the truth, he going to told her anyway, its the gang who said it better to go with nj before he said something
the point that cb can get million girls is applied to oppa
why oppa didn't fall with another patient, he is caring doctor anyway or his co workers when they broke up
love is not a choice and for nj response, that the missing key, maybe she actually love cb but she in relationship that she thinks gonna last forever like people in countryside marriage,
at least cb did just like his promised to nj
nj eating lot because she just back to home, with mom cooking her special food that she never tasted in long time
if she depressed, they will show she eat a lot in australia

Now, that is exactly what is to be admired about him and his love. That he had million girls that would die to be by his side, but he still one sidedly loved NJ the whole time he was in japan without contacting her even once. That shows dedication, a man who is willing to wait for forever if need be. Sure, it's not practical, but for drama purposes, I think chilbong is pretty much an ideal character. He will never ever take her love for granted because he treasures her to the point of waiting for her for so long. Ever heard, "anything worth having is worth waiting/fighting for"? and I think that quote applies to love, too.
As for his lies, I think they sound more endearing than anything. it's cute that he wanted to spend more time with her like that. and if NJ didn't have a problem with it, then I guess we shouldn't dwell on it too much either.

I actually think Chilbong's unwavering love mirrors that of YoonJae's in the 1997 installment. Remember there, after the gang 'broke up' to go to college, Yoon Jae never really was into actively dating because he still had feelings for Shi Won. And that feelings survived until 7 years later when they met again at that cafe. I was suspicious of his feelings then (how can they last that long), but after understanding for myself that that's just his personality, I accepted it. This time around I think its also in the way the CB character has been written that I'm accepting that he can love someone for that long. It's because also he has been lonely for very long and yet he focused on baseball and didn't actively look for love anywhere else. Not just anyone will do for him.
Anyway did anyone catch that 'I've liked you since the first time I saw you part!' but that wasn't really showed in the drama. The first time the two were onscreen, they already knew each other. So I demand a flashback! Heeheee

No offense to all people who are demanding flashbacks let me honestly ask you this.
If there was a flashback of episode 11 after CB proposes where NJ shows some kind of feelings for him it makes episode 12 episode 13 and episode 14 invalid because Na Jung was giddily in love with oppa. You honestly tell me that if a girl is starting to develop feelings for some other guy how would she cry she be happy to be with Oppa every single second how would she literally break down when she knows that she like him if she has feelings for CB. Would there not be an hesitation in getting involved with a guy when you are developing feelings for someone else. If they cut something from episode 14 the goodbye scene where she feels according to you guys love or even attraction for cb why would she literally be all over Oppa in episode 15 be heartbroken when Oppa was leaving in episode 16 and accept his proposal (with tears of joy i might add) of oppa.
Please tell me how could NJ have feelings for CB before and be so happy with oppa dont tell me she was not she was there is no proof you can point to the contrary.
Dont tell me she dint love oppa the whole series is proof of it.
People fall out of love all the time. It is possible for NJ to develop feelings for CB now but honestly with 2 episodes it would be underwhelming experience and a waste of the entire series but it could happen.
If they decide to go to do flashback of all CB NJ scenes now it would make negative sense now and would point to the female character in an extremely bad light but mostly be absolutely ludicrous writing.
I really want to know the opinion of you guys.

December 23, 2013 at 11:49 AM
@Ketu
I understand where you're coming from. From what I understand in your comment you think that if there's a flashback of NJ's feelings for CB, that would mean that NJ wasn't as devoted to Oppa from the beginning. But you also have to understand that that's just a theory of CB shippers which arose because of certain unanswered questions in our heads. In the end, that theory may or may not prove to be true after all, but we let it go because it was just a theory.
As an example, these are the kinds of questions that arose in our heads which made us question NJ's feelings for CB in the past:
1.) I am not going to argue on the fact that Na Jeong loves oppa. She was and she have been showed as such. I accept that wholly. But I want to ask, if she was so in love, I just want to know, how a person like NJ could not have totally shut down CB's advances? She was in love with oppa and aware of CB's feelings at the same time, but she still agreed to hang out and meet up with CB (remember the Sampoong department store), she meets up with and him do favors for him like tutoring and she allows him to hang out inside her bedroom while the two of them are alone.
2. During the restaurant scene, NJ made it clear that she felt uncomfortable & awkward around CB. But what was her reason? She said it herself, it was not because she was in love in oppa that she was awkward around him, but it was because he was a celebrity, a star. Na Jeong has always been made out to be a straightforward person and she says what she feels. She says there that she doesn't dislike him. Now this means either two things for me: 1.) she's confused as to what she really feels; 2.) she likes him.
I don't think it would be preposterous to say that feelings are not always clearly and absolutely delineated into black and white, the 'I like him' or 'I don't like him'. And this is why we came up with this theory and these demand for some flashbacks.
Also, I hope you do not take offense with this, but I hope you choose better words sometimes to say what you feel and not use 'absolutes' like: "Dont tell me she dint love oppa the whole series is proof of it." -- The series is not yet over. We have two episodes left. Whether or not Na Jeong loves oppa for the whole series we will know in the last two episodes.

honestly? chilbong isnt the only one who couldve chosen a myriad of other girls. he couldve easily chosen to be with his previous girlfriend or his first love or those friends of na-jung's who were interested in him or that female co-worker doctor who had her eye on him... but none of those girls are na-jung, so they don't matter to him. its the same for chilbong. even if there are a thousand girls after him, if its not na-jung he's not interested. its like it was for haitai: he got dates with plenty of pretty girls but it wasn't enough because all he wanted was to have ae-jung back, even years after she broke up with him. its kind of a recurring theme in the series, so i'm not sure how it feels off :/ but maybe thats just me lol

@omona:
He hesitated for only a few seconds. Before that, he was waiting for a taxi to send her home, which is in no way urgent to me. However, right after he knew that Coach was in danger, he took a moment to go 'Damn, NaJung is going to beat me up for this' before demanding for the car keys and I can't fault him for taking a few seconds to answer because a thought was flashing through his mind.
They got to the hospital pretty fast, as is evidence by Mom noting that over the phone, so while yes, he did hesitate, it was not long enough for me to fault him too much (or at all actually).
I think the problem why people made such a big issue about his moment's hesitation is that it kinda was made to seem longer due to the sudden interjection of SungKyun and YoonJin's moment in between the time accident was known and when car keys were demanded.

If you are going go to any stuff like that what about when Oppa pulled Shiwon hair. A GROWN MAN has no place pulling a teenagers hair. No matter what. I don't care what the situation was that is a big NO in my book. But oppa shippers saw it as a way to bring the cast of 1997 in. Please if we start throwing mud like that then then there will be no end to this argument. If that second really bothered you then you eyes will never see the possibility that NJ could love another person. Oppa shippers say this is a slice of life drama. Guess what people break up all the time. Take that slice of life. If you can't see what other people see than that is fine but don't throw trivial things out to make your case. Makes you seem desperate. Plus I have never once said oppa couldn't be the husband. I always likes his as a character. I never once threw him under the bus. But really comments like yours make it hard on the rest of us who are trying to enjoy this comment section. Shame on all of you.

I hope that because of leeezzzzz's comment, we can now agree that the two males we ship are not manna from heaven who are free from imperfections. So can we now go on and focus our discussion on hopefully another more significant point of contention in the drama?

I also wondered how the heck NJ interprets this.
We haven't seen her react in the past to people who lie to her. It may not be a hot button, or it could be a big deal.
Is she relieved that he isn't really as dumb as a rock? It seems that her personality might have a tough time building a future and raising kids with someone that stupid.
Or is it she is touched that he was willing to subvert his pride in order to be near her? He did take a lot of ribbing from the gang to spend those precious hours with her.

I think Na Jeong was livid that he lied to her because she had come to trust him a lot, a sort of depend on him because whenever he's with her, he shows great perception to her feelings.
That anger did however, melt away when he told her why he felt he had to lie and that is pretty telling.
Personally I think this drama is wonderful it's just that it veered off course a couple of times and fueled the Fan Wars so not everyone's gonna be happy at the ending. It would have been a gem if it was just 16 episodes long...

I agree. I think its cute that he wants to spend time with her, I really do, and i am genuinely not trying to bash the guy, but I don't like how easily he lies to spend time with her. I feel like in a way he is manipulating her and not trusting that she might spend time with him if he just simply asks. This is one of the many reasons why i just don't see him as the husband. It is episode 19 and she still doesn't look at him with any sort of affection beyond friendship and he still has to trick her to spend time with her. If the writers wanted to make him a husband, he should have the cohones to just ask her out and be honest from the get go instead of feeling the need to lie to spend time with her.

Oppa has always been part of the family and Appa's apprehension of them dating was not unfounded, because of his fear of losing him as a son. Oppa telling Appa "I'm sorry" over and over in the beginning and on the verge of tears, tears that start falling when Appa calls him "son." Then Appa continues talking and reassures Oppa that he will always be a son to him. It'a beautifully quiet, hugely emotional moment, that's reinforced later by Appa giving Oppa the red mittens that Mom made especially for Sung family members. So Oppa will remain a son to Appa, no matter what. I love all the main characters, and what draws me most to this show every week and without subs is seeing how everyone cares about everyone else, despite their differences.

Please for the love of all that is holy end this triangle from HELL once and for all. I HATE it!
At first I loved that there was finally a drama where there was a love triangle where both guys seemed to have equal chance to win. Both were good, decent, loved the h, and I believed both could have a happy life with her in their own right. But this stupid mystery, has made both guys disappear for episodes on end to keep the mystery alive. It's caused the story to shift from developing these wonderful characters to instead be about keeping the mystery alive. It has served to curtail the true development of either relationship in order to keep the mystery alive. I HATE IT!
I'm actually at the point where I don't know if I'll be satisfied with either choice. I just don't see how either guy is going to get closure on his feelings for Na Jung in 2 episodes when neither has for 19.
I loved this drama so much in the beginning, and while I still have fondness for all these characters I've come to love, I can't wait for it to end. I'm so sick of this "who's the husband?" that I can hardly stand it.
I mean we all know that Yoo Jin and Samchunpyo get married, but did that make this episode and their issue about her not feeling like he was committed enough any less touching and important. I was completely invested in that. And even though I knew they'd eventually make up, based on their future selves, I still worried that it could lead to a short break up or something.
I just think that they could have answered this question much, much earlier and still have had a compelling drama.

Yes. Yes to all.
Thanks for the recap, JB! Still reading, even though I'm not really watching. As Rashell said, I just don't care any more. This husband game is stoopid. Stop it, Show. Just stahhp.
It was nice to see Chilbong finally returning from deepest, darkest space though. He was on the moon, right? Right.
Of course, we all know he's about to be sent back to America alone. This will probably happen off-screen, so if CB disappears next week and is never mentioned again, just assume she told him no and the writer would like you to bash your head against the wall.
Aargh, this show.
The only thing I wish would happen off-screen, in a galaxy far far far far FAR away, is the wedding.
What do we want?
No. More. Wedding. Footage.

Same here! Mid-way through, I just got fed up. The need to prolong the mystery husband till the end became AM94's downfall. Personally, they could have followed Yoo Jin and Samchunpyo's timeline, even though the end point was pretty clear from the get go, but it still didn't take away our emotional investment in their journey. Unlike the main love leg......

something feels missing in ep 18 and 19. i really hate how they didn't go more into detail over the break up. and after all that chasing she did, she let the long distance thing break the two of them. same for oppa. you made this massive choice, knowing it could ruin what you have with her family, and then you let the two of you grow apart like this? i mean it all just seems such a freaking waste. i thought they would have fought harder. and chilbongie returning wasn't quite as dramatic as i thought it would be and the two were pretty chilled with each other apart from some awkwardness considering how he avoided talking to her whilst he was away. i don't know, a lot just isn't matching up and giving me the spark and swoon the previous episodes did. i hope nexts weeks are a bit more exciting. but yes, dads confession made me a little teary. i hope oppa stays as part of the family because i think i realised now just how much i love him as a member. which is why it made me sad that the other members didn't really mention missing him.
at this point i don't even care who gets the girl. i'm kind of over her at this point. as long as oppa and chilbongie are happy, i'm happy.

They should and would have fought harder, but we can't have their relationship last, so they have to break up. All so the husband question won't be answered.
There were a million and one things that happened in this drama simply to keep the mystery question of the husband going even when it meant important events happened off screen. Or characters acted completely out of character.
I just feel like this drama has sacrificed consistency and character continuity for keeping up the stupid mystery of who is the husband.

I agree with both Aly and Rashell.
I don't like the fact that Najung has turn into a puppet of 'Fate' rather than a player. I mean she's still spunky and brass (which is what i totally love about Najung), but if she ends up accepting Chilbongie in the next ep, i'm gonna give the writer my middle finger.
For a girl whose long-term relationship fizzled out because of distance, to suddenly jump into another relationship with a guy who would be leaving in a few weeks and having to endear another long-distance relationship, seems a far-fetched even though her new beau is loyal to a fault and has been in love with her for years. I would have thought that she'd at least show some doubt and fear, and have her issues addressed before she made a decision. I know that past experience does not define your current decisions but a person is always growing and you take away lessons from your past experience that gives you new insights.
So far, we are not shown how NJ dealt with the breakup and how she has come to terms with it. Just hearing her thoughts of "Oh-i-thought-we-were-special- but-i-guess-not" is plain lazy writing. I don't buy it. I want the satisfaction of being with her when she found closure or at least at the point of revelation.
I do not like the feeling of being pulled by the nose and that is what this writer is doing. Mark my words, the rug will be pulled from under CB. He'll end up being the rebound guy cause we didn't get to hear NJ's narration about the aftermath with Thrash.
I have been purely on Team Ara since ep 16. Not Team Najung. And the husband-thunderdome not only made me loose interest but i absolutely loathe it now. I want the writer to be fair to Go Ara's character. Regardless of who NJ ends up with, YYS and JW will come out of the war smelling like roses.
1) If NJ ends up with Thrash, yay for first-love purity. Boo for kicking poor faithful puppy.
2) If NJ ends up with CB, yay for CB and his hardwork. Boo for breaking oppa's heart.
For Go Ara who's character came out strong in the first half, then fell through the second half, because of the stupid loveline, i feel that it's so unfair. In reply 1997, the drama was always focused on Shi Won even when she wasn't onscreen. Her character always had consistent growth yet still stay true to her core self. But for Najung.....i kinda lost her in ep 15. Ironically since that made me Team Ara in ep 16. It's also ironic that it was Go Ara's portrayal of Najung that made me love her yet it made me hate Najung cause i love Ara more now.

Stayed up all night waiting for this. It's 4:30am in my time zone by the way.
I've always hoped that the husband will be Garbage. Maybe because he's always reminded me of my boyfriend, and I can totally relate to the perpetual lateness caused by unexpected calls from the hospital, am a medical officer, dating another medical officer. But you just know that behind all the fatigue and the lateness, the caring and missing would always be there.
But endgame is going to be CB isn't it. He'll probably go away to the states for two years, and that's why the wedding is in 2002. :( sigh.

Or he could give up going to the States for NJ. How about that?
NJ said the greatest love of all is Sacrifice, when she asked BG and HT to go for the ride with her, and in walks CB, who sacrificed himself to take that 1st ride with her. Who's to say that he wouldn't sacrifice his chance to go to U.S. in order to stay by her side? That would seal it, wouldn't it? (And it would also show the difference between his love and Oppa's love for her, since Oppa chose to go to Busan. It'd also show that his tagging along with her when she goes to get her driver's license exam is his genuine desire to be with her no matter what it takes.)
I don't dislike Oppa. I just like it so much that NJ could have one guy as her husband and another as her doting Oppa for life. Why have one when you can have two? Keep Both these wonderful guys in your life, NJ-ah!
The problem with this show the way it is set up, beyond irritating us for yanking our chains, is that part/half of the viewers would be upset whichever guy becomes the husband, and that's not a good note to end the show!

I don't think Chil Bongie is the end game to tell you the truth. I would be floored if he is, because they built up the entire show with Trash being too easy, Chil bongie being impossible. I mean when has NJ ever and I mean EVER looked at CB that way? Giddily, or with love? Never. and even if they show flash backs I think I would be pissed because why couldn't I have just watched that while it was actually happening? Why hide that from us?? Is suspense really that imp that they have to deceive us?
LOL sorry I went off in a rant.
But basically, regardless of what the writer's do, none of the audience at the end of the day are going to be satisfied and that is what it is going to leave a bad taste about the show.

It is deliberate that the show built up Trash being too easy, as you say, and CB seemingly impossible. If they give us flashbacks next week, which I think they will, it just goes to show that they've been tricking us into seeing certain things and not others, and messing with our perception.
I essentially said the same thing last week, but got yelled at for "blaming the show for my bias towards CB".

And yes either way it will leave a very bad bitter taste!

I don't think it's realistic for Oppa and Najung to get back together within 2 episodes. Relationships end for a reason, and knowing that both of them are so stubborn and unwilling to change, they would have a mountain of problems to work out before they can attempt getting back together and actually lasting.
Either way, i'm probably not going to be satisfied by either of the guys winning her over (or back) within such a short time period.

Ditto. They had me convinced that his role in the family as their surrogate son and brother was the right and best thing, and therefore unshakeable. Rooting for him felt wrong, cos it felt like it was rooting for NJ to lose her most loving brother. Just look at those first 2 eps and how they bicker, fight, fart, tear at each other's hair and face. I just love how they relate that way. If it was me, I couldn't let go of that brotherly love in choosing to swap it for romantic love, which is much more volatile and changeable. But that's just me.

Except for the fact that in 19 episodes Najung has never looked at Chilbong that way at all. I get that people like Chilbong, he is a wonderful and likable character, but what is important is what Najung feels and in 19 episodes her heart is still affected by Trash more than anyone else. It would be really dumb of the writers to really believe that the viewers would accept Najung falling for Chilbong and marrying him in the two episodes left without anything in the past 19 episodes to support that ending and flahbacks would not be enough. Considering the Jung Woo / Trash love in Korea, the backlash would be tremendous.

what are you basing that breakdown on? as far as we know, at least a solid 7.5% of that 10% is Team Trash. Netizen comments and posts on the main DC page is overwhelmingly in support of Oppa, and an Oppa/Najung ending. in reality, there could be just as many cb/nj shippers as oppa/nj shippers, but there is no way of knowing for sure. in any case, those shippers are probably not as invested or vocal as the ones who post comments and up votes on articles, majority of whom again are trash supporters. this is all to say that if oppa is not the husband, there are going to be many, many people who are very upset, and they WILL be vocalizing their disappointment.

It's early hours of the morning here and I finally saw your recap! The words are the highlights of my exasperated weekends (after watching each episode of AM 1994)
I love this show to bits, I really do, but I can't wait for it to get over. And not just to finally get the answers to The Mystery.
The writer started with gold and then started piling on ash. If she marries Chilbong, I would be disappointed because aside from his love for Najung, I never got to know him. If she goes with Oppa, then I'd be disappointed because there have been several places where he has fallen short throughout the series when it comes to his lady love (Where did the marshmallow/seal-giving "not late" Oppa go?).
To make an "engaging" love triangle, the writer ended up taking bits out of the puzzles of both relationships and thus they would remain imperfect whichever puzzle she decides to assemble now. I am all for slice-of-life or relatively-realistic TV but I am failing to see Najung with Chilbong (Perfect lover but lacking character) and Oppa (Out-of-the-world character but flawed lover). Argh, just the thought of how perfect this show could have been leaves me upset.

for cb, the character will developed if nj reaction os showed
like 1st 2 ep with little cb
there's 2 ep left, still think they can do it

because there's must something that hold her from all cb confession

this man know how to deal with heart
and he confessed because nj keep asking why he lied - dejavu
something bothering me about oppa, why he didn't call he will some when he got traffic or that accident
they have self phone and he really look like someone who need to go
i think he is late more because his choice, didn't use all his time well
he is great character, but he need to realize, that you need to show your love with something really plan and executed well, not just go or do because you wanted it but something like scp deal with yj
th effort, to deal with nj heart to make memories
talking about memories, cb already make his foundation for beautiful memorable scene
so i accepted the ending but still thinking 18 ep will wrap this up not 21
some moment is left like 16-17 just like filler, the rating also down
with appa and cb statement, there;s highly chance cb will not in 2013 scene if he didn't ended up with nj,
but oppa still has

He was a resident, then a brand new doctor starting his career. He must be very good at what he does, for his professor to take so much notice of him, and it seems like he is dedicated to his profession and has ambitions in it. He is willing to give his career top priority. It makes him a great doctor, but that usually means his relationships and family life will suffer. You only have 24 hours a day and a certain amount of energy. His teammate said: He just came off a 12 hour surgery! And that's in neurosurgery!
I think neurosurgery has become his life. It's not something anyone can fault him for. Just as Appa said: Sometimes life doesn't give us what we want. But it's no one's fault.
As a woman, I'd want a guy who has a career, but who still treats me like I matter to him on a daily/regular basis. Doctoring is demanding work. Stats show that doctors don't have long life expectancies but do have hi divorce rates.

From the preview of Eps 20, I get a feeling that NJ will go for Oppa after all, which is fine because as many viewers say here, 'what is the point of investing in romance bet NJ and Oppa for so long if they do not end up together?!'
This is a drama after all despite of many realities and past historical facts thrown in, such as the crisis in 1997. Because this is a drama, four of them can end up with their first love. For most of us, first love is bitter sweet. Long distance romance often end up bad. That is a reality that most girls face. If a guy were so sweet, understanding, very talented, make tons of money yet despite of all those qualities that girls would gaga, he only see you, wait for you for so long, would we go for this guy?

"what is the point of investing in NJ answer/reaction to CB for so long if they do not end up together?"
"If a guy were so sweet, understanding, very talented, make tons of money yet despite of all those qualities that girls would gaga, he only see you, wait for you for so long, would we go for this guy?"
of course because he showed it, that why you married someone
because you now feel whoever you or him, he sweet to you, have stabilization in money, only see me, will wait for me, and he is the one who understand you, many people doesn't understand each other even know longer,
if he is cb, he is not that great at academic or managing money, he also too honest and try to everything - like the dino bread
but if the guy didn't show his sincerity, left you cliffhanger when you came back, didn't try to fix your relation as fast as he could
it doesn't the woman falls at all if she find she lost interest
be honest 1st love work but 1st boyfriend is something that have less chance
and 1st love cannot guaranteed anything because your destiny is bonded by fate when people don't ever know when it start or end

So... Dad needed a surgery because he got drunk and... fell into a manhole... This family is seriously unbelievably hilarious! Well, at least he left his car behind, even if only to allow his daughter to start driving into the city for the first time with a supposedly-driving-license-less person...
And Joon's little white lies just endear him to me. So cute and enamoured, that boy. And while lies are not something to be encouraged, the way he used them to create opportunities to get close to NaJung just resonates with me, since it shows how much he really likes NaJung. It's like the opposite situation to when HaiTai let those girls walk off without a fight last episode. Timing is everything and sometimes, the right opportunities just land in front of you. But opportunities mean nothing if you can't or don't utilise them. On the other hand, having the ability or desire also means nothing if one does not have the opportunity to showcase it. Lucky is the one who has both the opportunity and ability at the same time. The rest, just wait for the opportunity to come by. But the really intuitive go one step further and realise that sometimes, you just have to create your own opportunities, which is just what Joon did this episode. It hurt nobody anyway and when push comes to shove, he fessed up. So, *shrug*
I was also tearing along with Oppa when Dad was speaking to him. I hope he realised how important he is to that family now and stops being an idiot and staying away. Whatever happens, Oppa, We love you!
Damn, fate really is shit. But when it comes down to it, it's not like fate just strings people along. In the end, fate is a combination of timing, opportunity and ability to use that opportunity. Being able to control at least 1/3 of such a powerful force as a human... that's not too bad.
And this show really opened my eyes to how grey the world is. Nothing is purely black or white. The same action can be right in one perspective and wrong in another perspective that so many times, it's just better to sit back and watch and not judge. Bad things can happen without anybody fault. Because it's just life at play.

Someone commented in ep 18 that calling it Fate is just bcos of English subs, that it westernizes the concept and simplifies it too much. And I agree.
The concept is actually In Yeon, which is a Buddhist concept that involves our connections to each other in previous lives. It is how we related over many life times to accrue in what form our current relationship takes.

Yeah, sure, whatever. I think it's just a difference in terminology. In the end, it's just the same thing, with, perhaps, someone higher up playing with time and coincidences between humans, because even with In Yeon, what defines whether 2 people meet each other at all in a thousand years. And even the relationship between people per lifetime, don't the individuals get some say in them?
So maybe Fate lasts per lifetime and In Yeon lasts through reincarnation. But the basic forces are just the same, at least to me.

Gah, SUNG DONG IL. He owns this show.
So I haven't watched a drama since the disaster that was BIG. I just haven't had the energy to invest 16+ hours for another potential disaster. Well, my mother wouldn't shut up about Answer Me 1994 over Thanksgiving so while sick, I decided to see what all the hype was about. And I loved it. I was really enjoying it, though it seemed a little long, so I was bit confused about the criticisms and comparisons to 1997. So I decided to watch that too. Again, SUNG DONG IL. He made me cry til 5am on 3 consecutive nights. Having watched both, I finally see why fans of the original series are so frustrated because there's so much wasted potential -- and time! So much wasted time!! In 1997, I adored both Yoon Yoon Jae and his brother so it's crazy how 1994 has become the Garbage vs Chilbong wars. I think they're both great characters and both tug at my heartstrings in their own ways. TVN seems a bit HBO-ish in that they give their writers a really long leash when tighter editing should be called for. However, I'll still look back at 1997 really fondly for bringing me back into the kdrama fold.
Now I'm going to go hunting for some dinosaurs at Tous Les Jours. Seriously, crying laughing.

Me, too, and it gets funnier each time.
Not only was the way he moved his head to the sound of the dinosaur name (that he made up) so endearing but how completely proud he was to impress NJ for a change.
I love that they are making him a dumb jock - but a really sweet one - instead of an egomaniac like that batting sunbae who insulted NJ.

Awww I love dad. Everyone does I think. Just needed to say it amidst all the couple issues.
Now onto CB - I love his character so much because he's the guy for whom NJ always comes first. In expense of his pride, ego and everything in between, and that's something not everyone can give up on. But if the writers are truly going the CB-NJ route, I wish they showed this whole arc around 2-3 episodes earlier so at least we are shown how their relationship's firsts panned out to be. It's too rushed now, to have CB be the husband is too abrupt. But if I were honest, I do want it to still be him.
The oppa-NJ break up was handled badly I think. For a moment, I thought they drifted apart but when she was back, they would try and resolve everything. That didn't happen and I'm a little sad it didn't because the amount of love they shared and time they spent together; I'd have wanted both of them to try a little harder. But it's also a reality that sometimes even love isn't enough to overcome distances and time.
Whatever the outcome(or whoever the husband), I hope it's worth the 20 episodes we waited to finally find out. Because I've never felt sorry watching this and I definitely wouldn't want to start feeling that now. Only 2 more episodes drama, be good enough so I can store you in my memorable pile of 2013!

I find it very funny because imo for CB it isn't NJ that always come first.
It is his feelings.
White lies? No problem.
You might find it cute, but not in that situation - NJ worried for her father that needed surgery fast, and CB- still not telling her thr truth he can drive and could be already in the hospital.
But no, instead of thinking about NJ or her father, he lets her try to caught a Taxi, and when he sees it isn't possible, he tells her the truth he can drive - took him long enough, he was thinking in his own self - NJ getting disappointed by his lie.
How is this putting NJ first?
What really comes first about CB is his feelings. It was always like this in the drama. He has to confess because he can't take it anymore even though he knows NJ liked Trash -> putting his feelings not NJ first.
He decides to confess AGAIN, in the worst time ever - when NJ father just got surgery and NJ is not in the right state but he has to confess soon or else he loses his chance because he has to go to america soon -> again about his feelings.
He asks NJ to go to places with him not because of her but because he wants to spend time with her, even though NJ might not want to, like the baseball games, her tutoring him, because he picked a subject he wasn't good at to ask NJ help/pass time with her -> again about his feelings not NJ's.
So, I don't really get this ''NJ's comes first''

Hmm, while NaJung might not always come first, she certainly does not come last either. And ChilBong's feelings don't always come first either.
I think the taxi argument is invalid. I will fault him if he took one hour to tell her, but he did not. Perhaps he was thinking about himself for a few seconds or a minute but in the end, he crumbled really quickly and outed himself.
And just because one's love interest likes another person, it doesn't mean that one cannot confess. Confessing is really like just informing especially in this case where ChilBong did not expect her to like him back or act any differently. She has every right to know who likes or liked her, and whether NaJung gets bothered by it is dependent on how NaJung sees it. And NaJung was still single and available anyway. The one who doesn't confess and gets sad is a fool, like Yoon YoonJae when he was eighteen.
And regarding the timing when he confessed a second time, I do not believe that it was the worst time ever. NaJung knows that her father is well and thus is at peace. She even was in the right state of mind to whack him for lying to her, haha. In fact, I thought it was the Perfect timing for him to confess again, because it served both as a reminder and a reason for his actions, which I think NaJung has the right to know about. If he had just shut his mouth and had gone 'Sorry for lying' without explanation, it could have caused a misunderstanding and wrecked the friendship between them which would just hurt NaJung and himself, doing no one good.
And your last argument, you are right. He did ASK NaJung to go with him to wherever, so NaJung did have choices but she herself did not reject him. So if NaJung was unhappy with those outings, she only has herself to blame, and none is ChilBong's fault whatsoever. In those instances, the decisions lie with NaJung and so for those times, it is NaJung comes first.
So, NaJung may not always come first for him, but he's doing a pretty good job balancing between his feelings and Najung's feelings, which is superbly fine by me. If he has to remain all sad with bottled up feelings just to make such NaJung remains a pure, unharmed angel, then I would be frustrated and angry with his character because that's not a Major League Player. That's a stupid fool wallowing in self-pity.

I don't see it as harsh as you do, but I had the same thought as you do. Whatever his connection to her is, it was never about what she needed or wanted, but what he wanted. Mainly be closer to her. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, because he (almost) never crossed any boundaries, but it's also a reason why I never connected with his feelings for her.

Awww, Dad. You can always count on him to pull tug on your emotions. A big thank you to YOU for "reconciling" with Oppa. Hopefully Oppa's and Na Jung's can be just as touching.
And CB, you cheeky little bastard. Of course you would find a way to spend time with Na Jung, savoring every moment. It's good that he doesn't take it all for granted. And can I just say how we finally have a character that is just as relatable as us when it comes to studying (even though he ended up passing, but still)? All these advantages he has, when it comes to her, he would willingly give them up all for her. If they do end up together, Writer Lee better step it up. As much as I squealed CB's return, it wasn't as impactful as I wanted. With 2 episodes left, she NEEDS to. And as much as I felt sad for Garbage, it tells us about fate a lot. It CAN be a bitch, but I know that won't stop them from reconciling.
Oh, and Samcheonpo. As much as you can be SO frustrating, deep down you are such a sweetie. Cheers for showing all your flaws and endearments!

I'm baffled that some people still think that Na Jung always liked Chil Bong even though she covered her lips when she thought he might kiss her at the end of the previous episode. She never had feelings for him and she still doesn't. But I think she might be willing to give him a try because he's a nice guy. But Chil Bong will end up going to America with a broken heart.

I'm the one who believed that nj have the feeling to cb
because they always missing the following scene
and with that missing scene, nj-oppa date and break up
so what is nj response
i'm the person who follow narrative so we need that
if they reveal the answer and nj still with oppa it's fine
but as a reader viewer, they cheat with hide it, but we still need to accept it
but if the missing one is nj feeling toward cb that is real
that explain a lot why nj-oppa relation become like this
and nj should showed it
"in our neighborhood, people who married will stay forever" - this maybe nj feeling when she accepted oppa proposal
but maybe not
so just wait for nj decision
this game is built tension but this is something i found missing from reply 97
this show want us to have big heart toward people decision and make it as life advise

December 22, 2013 at 3:29 PM
i don't mean the cover of years which fastened
but the hiding answer
oppa already get the answer almost for all his action
but they save it for cb
that's why nj still only describe of girl who loves oppa
but she must have thinking about cb
even it not particularly show she loves him
but there's must be interaction
the best one is
after NY 1995 kiss
after sampoong hug,
and now after 2nd confession
read between the lines is different with left unanswered, there's no narration when oppa propose nj but there's narration when cb kiss nj is NY 1995, there should be a reason
that what i think as clue as general viewer,
you may asked what nj said to cb?
did she reject him?
why they still best friend? what did she said?
did she have feeling toward him?
there's no question towards oppa except will they become couple again?
but cb scene is demanding answer to understand that nj finally see him or not

Its gonna be oppa and that i am saying not because I am a oppa shipper or from millions of not so clues all over the series, if you beanies go back to the script reading, and look through the photos, oppa and na jung sit together, while chilbongie is somewhere lost in the table.
Isnt it customary that the leads always site together at script reading?
So the answer has already been decided from day 1 and all this is just to yank us around and make us go crazy!
Well it certainly worked, just that too much craziness will just leave a permanent scar sometimes(of not the good kind), which am afraid is what is gonna happen to the show.

Thank you for the recap.
Your opinion on this cleared up some things.
Although, still at this point, I really feel it could go either way.
At first I was a little disappointed with how they presented Oppa. I thought that because of missed chances and fate thwarting him with the car accident, that he would lose NJ.
That's stupid and temporary.
Your reading of it, that he made the choice to be late at each step of the way ties in with the voice overs:
Choice trumps Fate.
Obviously, at each an every step of the way, CBie is choosing NJ. Does he get bonus points for this with the writers, or are we to believe he is just dumb?
NJ had chosen Trash, but then had to make the decision for her parents and her career to go overseas. Their drifting apart is just how things go. Their love was NOT the stuff of legends. In her words, it wasn't as special as she thought it was because she and Trash are humans. Overwhelmed by work, they both CHOSE not to keep the relationship going by calling and returning calls.
This doesn't make them bad people, but it does realistically show how love dies a natural death when not tended to.
Here we are, back to square one. Trash doesn't really have the advantage anymore, he became "been there done that" NOT some fabulous guy she knows nothing about. She loves him loves him, but maybe she no longer wants to have his babies.
CBie? Still a big question mark when it comes to NJ. We have absolutely no idea what she thinks of him. We didn't see her reply to his first confession; we haven't heard her reply to his second.
Flashbacks are the way to fill in all the spaces. Flashbacks could save the CBie ship.
In the end, it doesn't matter what the moms of Korea think, it doesn't matter what the overseas fans think. In the end, we have to hear NJ's point of view on how she decided to spend the rest of her life. We know it's prolly down to the two who love her most and who love her a LOT.
I'm not gonna lie, if she picks CBie, I will cry loud and long happy tears - I am that invested. If she picks Oppa, I will be happy that her heart is at peace, and OK with CBie's feelings since the 2013 scenes show him at peace.
I am completely out of predictions.

Agree!! I'll be at peace either way, since it will be Na Jung's choice based on her feelings, not dictated by family or economic pressures, and no longer in the giddy throes of her first love.
I love all the other characters as well, so it's alright as long as the 1994 family as a whole is okay and have got each others' backs.
Loved the Dad-Oppa talk, and Samcheonpo's typically prosaic but utterly sweet non-proposal (phew! he was on dangerous ground for a while there!)

Taus Less Jaurse waws probably my favorite part of the Episode. I love that CB is so adorably dumb. Especially in light of his Drivers License lies. On a smart guy, it would be super creepy. But Bongie is just dumb enough for me to believe that he thought this was a good idea.
I've never been able to get behind the Dramaland cliche that love takes 20 years and a Study Abroad trip to properly heal, so I couldn't really get behind Trash being so broken up about being alienated from Najung's family. Because, even as they were drifting apart, why would he necessarily have to drift apart from her parents and the boarding house crew? Especially since she's been in Australia for this whole time. It's not like he was likely to bump into her. That's why I never bought the whole line about not wanting to date her because of the family connection. Because break-ups happen and people move on and you have to carry on with life and find the new normal.
Anyway, I know this is Dramaland and without epic heart-wrenching break-ups that take deades to get over, we wouldn't have any shows at all. It still irks me though. It's rare that I've seen in real life where people have broken up or been rejected and not been able to maintain some sort of relationship. Especially people who shared some sort of connection outside of the relationship, such as a large group of mutual friends (check) or family ties (check). So I can't help but roll my eyes in Dramaland when people break up and they are like "Never mind that we live next door to each other and work in the same office, let's never appear in front of each other again."
Rant Over, though. I really enjoyed this episode and laughed my but off. I especially loved the scene when they were trying to explain to SCP why he has to tell Yoonjin that he does plan to marry her one day. And I forgot how stinking adorable Bongie really is. This is why I've been solidly on Team Polygamy for the entire run.

I still think at this point it can go both ways. Honestly time has been something that has been central to the story.
It would seem kind of odd to make a character disappear for two episodes to ship him to America, come back again with everything okay. Not impossible but messy.
As for her covering her lips, she was eating ramen at the time. Plus, they had just met after so long, it would have been off.
NJ's decision and whatever it is she is obviously happy. Here is to next week.

That scene with Dad and Oppa was soo sweet. Especially when Oppa broke down in tears. Break my heart into a million pieces, why dontcha? I think the whole distancing himself from Na Jung's family as she and him fell apart was actually very true to life. No matter how close you are to your partner's family, how long you've known them, even if you've been friends way longer than you ever dated, breaking up changes all those dynamics in all those different relationships. That's just how love goes.
But there was the return of Chilbongie's pretty face, so that was a definite plus. And Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin are my favorite people, I hope we get to see their wedding day, too.
And I'm tired of going back and forth between who the husband is, so I'm just going to watch the remaining episodes as if I already know she's going to end up with both of the guys in a polyandrous marriage. Why choose one awesome guy when she can choose both? In my mind it has all the makings of a hilarious spin off of the first few years of marriage between the 3. ;)

I don't know why I really liked these episodes no matter how heartbreaking they were. I felt like we were actually getting somewhere instead of having filler type episodes. I love the transitions into adulthood. Where everything is not as glamorous as it seems. Life is also an accumulation of our choices including missed opportunities. We don't choose our friends, life partners based on who has more history with us. Some people stay together or grow apart. It's life. We all move on.
NJ has a big decision to make. I have faith that she will make the right one for her. It is her story. I know we all have our preferences on who we would want. Regardless of the decision she makes, it's great that she can have both T and CB in her life. If she had married T in the past she wouldn't have CB in her life. He would be gone forever.I stand by her and any decision she will make. I really need to see how she feels.
I think people are really tired with the writer yanking us around with the mystery. It's really getting old. Her execution is going to be very messy which is going to anger viewers more unfortunately.

or it will?
there's lot of things to show
nj reaction towards all cb confession
after hug?
after they lost contacted
what if nj already fall for cb but she realize it after her feeling accepted by oppa,
when couple married in countryside, they remain together forever- what id this is in her mind
so when cb leave she thinks this is their fate to separate
then IMF happen, they can't maintain their relationship
without a hope cb back to her life only to have last confession that indeed pushed by nj question
so she wants to make decision now
it's pretty much showed if the show want to give different message
please be open minded
and even- thought some feel cb annoying
it's fortunate he is there because they can arrive at the right time
and nj actually forgive him, that it sound she accepted his reason? she is fine, so we don't have to think much

So, this show has been my crack, more than any other this year.
But, BUT, the abrupt re-entry of CB only to drop him on his head again if Oppa is the husband just seems so wrong. If this happens, I think that CB is likely the most pitiful second lead I have seen written thus far. It is really the first time I was irritated watching this drama.
Oppa and NJ had their chance and were together for quite some time without any interference from CB or Dad or anyone else. The fact that they didn't work out was only influenced by themselves. As with some relationships, they just fell out.
The story will go wherever the writer takes it, and certainly there are many of us who tried love with the same person twice when the original time just didn't work out. Some of us were successful and some of us were not.
I am hoping that CB is the husband...his name is Joon and that is part of the husband's name shown a few episodes back. I can't recall if we have seen Oppa's real name other than reference to his last name, Kim.
I am also hopeful it is CB because it would be an
awesome twist for a second lead to get the girl.
If Oppa is NJ's husband, I am going to rename this drama in my mind from "AM1994" to either...
"Yanking My Chain for 21 *bleeping* Episodes" or
"Yanking My Chain 101"

Funny enough if CB is the husband I would name it the exact same thing since nothing in the drama thus far has shown that Najung has any feelings whatsoever for Chilbong, his love has been completely one-sided for 19 episodes. He loves her and thats cute but if they wanted to have him be the end-game they should of shown her having some form of awareness and feelings much earlier in the drama, which lets face it they didn't. That said I think it was established earlier all of the guys (except maybe SCP, whose real name I forget) have Joon in their name including Trash. The thought is that Trash is possibly Kim Jae Joon because both of his brothers are Kim Jae with different second names.
