Answer Me 1994: Episode 16

Crossover episode! Our timeline reaches 1997, which means that the Answer Me 1997 and Answer Me 1994 worlds collide for some meta fun. It’s also Binggeure’s episode to shine, and we get a really welcome glimpse into what life was like for him while we were busy paying attention to everyone else.

EPISODE 16: “Love, Fear: Answer Me 1997”

Dinner arrives at Housewarming Party 2013, and everyone gags at Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin’s show of aegyo spoon-feeding. Haitai wonders how they can still be so cutesy after four kids, while they just challenge him to try it with his wife. He and Na-jung turn to look at each other and shake their heads.

The doorbell rings with a surprise visit from Mom and Dad, who’re here because they suddenly remembered that bottle of liquor they made twenty years ago and wanted to drink it. Pfffffft. I knew that would come to bite them in the ass. The kids all freeze in terror.

Dad keeps nagging Na-jung to bring it over already, while they try to toss out distraction after distraction. Thankfully Na-jung’s upstairs neighbor is making a huge racket, and she makes a big show of being disgruntled enough to go upstairs and give them a piece of her mind.

She drags Dad with her, insisting he needs to protect her in case her neighbors are dangerous people, ha, and motions frantically at the group behind Dad’s back to pour soju back into that liquor jar while she’s gone. Chilbongie nods knowingly and Oppa winks.

While that’s going on, Binggeure gets a call and gets up to go meet someone. He says he’ll be right back and Oppa stops him, wanting to know who called. Binggeure just says it’s someone Garbage knows too, and that alone must be enough of a clue to him, because it makes him smile.

Binggeure waits outside in the street, and smiles to see a car pull up. Ermagerd, is that a red car? Is it Joon-hee?? Er, wait, is Binggeure supposed to have a red car if he’s with Joon-hee? You’re mixing my universes and it’s starting to hurt my head, Show.

We fade back to Feburary 1996, were Binggeure is smiling the same way as he waits outside the hospital and notices a couple walking by. Garbage runs out to meet him and takes him inside for a cup of coffee, and Binggeure tells him shyly that he’s re-enrolled.

Garbage knows already since he’s connected at school, and says he’s a little disappointed it took Binggeure a week to tell him. Binggeure swears he’s the first to know, and when Garbage asks why he chose to go back, he says he realized that he gave up before ever really trying.

Garbage gives him his precious study notes, making him promise not to let anyone else peek at them, and then Binggeure’s narration takes us back even further to February 1994’s med student orientation.

Binggeure: It’s possible that I just needed comfort. Twenty years old in Seoul. Twenty was the age of adulthood, and Seoul was a strange city. At an age no longer innocent and a city uninviting, it was frightening. With the common thread of fear, the war began. And on that unfamiliar battleground, I stood alone.

Orientation is basically Hell Camp, where the other freshmen have high school sunbaes to watch their backs, but Binggeure has no one to take his side.

He has to down enormous drink after enormous drink while his classmates get coddled, and THEN in the morning they’re woken up at the crack of dawn to climb a mountain while hungover. Aaaaack. The sympathy pangs!

Poor Binggeure is dying as he huffs and puffs up the mountain, getting scolded by every upperclassman who passes him by. He trails further and further behind, ready to give up at any moment, when suddenly a random man takes his backpack right off his back.

It’s Garbage! He’s dressed in plain clothes so Binggeure just calls him ajusshi, and Garbage simply tells Binggeure to follow his footsteps up the rest of the way, and he’ll carry his backpack. Awww. No wonder he looks at Oppa with those hero-worship eyes.

So Binggeure makes it up to the top and the freshmen are gathered for their celebratory meal. Their undergrad sunbaes introduce their sunbaes, who are here as honorary guests…

And as they file in, Binggeure’s once dejected face lights up in shock. There’s Garbage, walking on in with the rest of them, only now belatedly grabbing his med student sweatshirt. Dude, he’s basically Superman right now.

Of course he then totally ruins his own hero moment by putting on his sweatshirt backwards, HAHAHAHAHA. *rewind*

The sunbaes get told to sit amongst the newbs that they like, and Garbage walks right over to Binggeure with an accusatory finger, “Ajusshi?” Binggeure gulps in fear, but Garbage parks it next to him with a goofy grin.

He makes Binggeure smile and then warns him not to smile, and then raises a scary fist… only to pat him on the head like a puppy. Aw.

And then back in 1996, they get ready to go home and Garbage frets over Binggeure not being dressed warmly enough for the weather, and tosses him a scarf. It kind of kills me the way Garbage does things so nonchalantly that mean the world to Binggeure.

Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo go visit Haitai in the army, and when his superior officers come by, they hilariously assume that Yoon-jin is his girlfriend and Samcheonpo is his teacher, even though they’re sitting there in matching couple shirts. Haitai just lets them believe it and Samcheonpo scowls.

At home, Oppa and Na-jung are huddled on her bed. It looks like they’re maybe doing something naughty, only to turn towards the camera in the middle of a thumb war, pfft. Oppa won’t let her win so naturally she gets violent, and Dad comes in scream-laughing that they call this dating.

But then when he reenters the room thirty seconds later, Oppa has his arms around Na-jung, cooing sweetly like a boyfriend. Suddenly Dad’s ire goes from joking to real, and Na-jung panics at the paring knife in Dad’s hand. Ha. Damned if you fight, damned if you don’t.

Dad has the sense to stick the knife in her door and reach for a wooden giraffe to use as a paddle instead, and now it’s Na-jung’s turn to wrap her arms around Oppa to protect him. Mom just laughs from the living room.

We watch the rest of 1996 pass via hit song parade, as Mom, Dad, Na-jung, and Oppa sit in front of the TV and sing and dance to DJ DOC’s “Winter Story, Panic’s “Snail,” Seo Ji-won’s “Gather My Tears,” and Clon’s “Koong Ta Ri Sha Bara.” Na-jung’s dances are making my day.

The parade ends in January 1997, when H.O.T.’s “Candy” is the song of the day. The Inkigayo footage is edited in with Answer Me 1997 footage of Shi-won (Jung Eun-ji) screaming for her oppas, which our 1994 family watches as if it’s just on TV.

Dad gripes, “There’s the birth of another crazy fangirl. You know it’s almost always the parents’ fault. If it were me I’d cut off all her hair and break her legs!” HEE. Aw man, I really miss that daddy-daughter relationship. It was the best ever.

We fast-forward all the way to March 1997, and Oppa has moved back into the house while doing his residency. Dad gets super excited about having invested his entire life savings into one-way cell phones, which sounds like a terrible idea.

Mom and Dad hear that Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo are off visiting Haitai in the army again, and Dad muses that the two roomies fought like cats and dogs while living together, but now Samcheonpo visits him constantly. “Is attachment from fighting the trend in this house?”

This time on their way back, Samcheonpo casually suggests that they spend the night out. Yoon-jin sees right through his innocent cover story and tells him to forget it.

Na-jung comes in to wake Oppa for breakfast, but he isn’t there. He’s at the hospital even on his day off, and sits quietly in his professor’s office as he gets asked one last time, “Are you going?” Oh no. Where?

The professor tells him that this dispatch residency is an opportunity that other students are lining up and pleading for, while Garbage alone is hesitating. He says it’s only for a year (in Busan) and it’s a chance to participate in surgery in a way that staying in a large Seoul hospital won’t give him for years.

Garbage knows he can’t pass it up and agrees to go, hanging his head at the thought of having to tell Na-jung. He goes straight to the phone to call her, and then we just see her numb reaction in the aftermath. He promises it’s only for a year and says he’s sorry.

Na-jung takes it in and accepts that this is what’s best for Oppa and his future. He assures her that they’ll still see each other, but she sighs that they hardly see each other now. Being in Busan will just make it exponentially harder.

She pouts that he’s dead if he cheats, and he points out the ridiculousness of him having the time to cheat when he can’t even sleep. Wrong thing to say, dude. Immediately Na-jung flares up: “What, are you saying that if you had the time, you’d cheat?” See? Wrong thing to say.

She’s a little comforted to know that he’s going with his two resident buddies, and he refers to them as the three musketeers. One of them is his bunkmate with the curly hair, while the other is a girl named Min-jung. We’re meeting her for the first time but apparently she’s been a fixture in Oppa’s life and Na-jung has even met her a few times.

We see the three musketeers together at the hospital a little later, and when Garbage wanders back to his office like a zombie after surgery, it’s Min-jung who tends to him and makes him eat. Uh-oh, she’s way too smiley at him to just be a friend.

Na-jung picks up the phone a million times to call Oppa without ever dialing, and when Yoon-jin comes by she fills her in on the news. Yoon-jin tsk-tsks at her for not taking this separation more seriously, worrying that being out of sight will naturally put Na-jung out of Oppa’s mind.

Yoon-jin calls Na-jung naïve when she refers to Min-jung as a nice unni and a really good friend to Oppa. She points out that being in the trenches together is what builds bonds, and why doctors marry doctors and the like. She says that Min-jung has one advantage that can’t be ignored: she and Oppa understand one another. Na-jung’s heart sinks.

So almost as soon as Oppa moves back into the house, he moves back out, and Na-jung spends the whole day hardly helping and just trailing behind Oppa, holding onto the back of his shirt.

It comes time for him to say goodbye, and the family sends him off and Dad even ushers everyone inside so he can have his moment with Na-jung. She’s pouting the whole time, of course, and Oppa just hugs her for a long time without a word.

Mom sings along while watching Star In My Heart, which was her favorite drama in 1997’s alternaverse. Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo head out for another date while visiting Haitai, and Binggeure says he’s headed to a med school MT. Mom gasps to hear that he’s participating in things, which is super cute.

By now Haitai has lost all his early army stiffness and swaggers in with the bravado of a senior officer. He catches another soldier getting Yoon-jin’s number and puts a stop to it, while Samcheonpo fumes impotently.

On their way back, Samcheonpo asks her to meet his sunbaes this weekend, but she refuses him flatly, insisting that they’ll end up at a noraebang and she’s tone-deaf and too afraid to step foot in one.

Binggeure calls Garbage at his new hospital and tells him about being at the med school MT, and Garbage warns him to watch out for a sunbae called Die-Die (as in, I die, you die).

He just says cryptically that he’ll know once he’s trapped, which then leads to Binggeure’s horrified face as one particularly insane sunbae starts pouring every kind of liquor known to man in this giant pot. Ugh, my stomach is turning.

He tells the group that it’s a game of trust—the pot gets passed around the room and everyone drinks some and it has to be empty by the time it comes back around to the starting point. And of course, he passes the pot the opposite way, leaving Binggeure the final drinker.

He becomes increasingly furious as the other students take teensy wimpy sips, and his shoulders sag as it gets passed closer and closer, nearly as full as it left. He thinks it’s all but lost when the girl sitting next to him takes her turn and suddenly downs the ENTIRE thing. Holy. Is her liver made of steel?

Binggeure lights up and claps for her—oh, it’s a cameo by Yoon Jin-yi (A Gentleman’s Dignity, Mandate of Heaven)–and thanks her in banmal, assuming that the cute little girl with a bow in her hair is a classmate.

But she declares that nothing in this world is for free, and demands, “A kiss on noona’s cheek.” He gets told he has to drink a new pot if he doesn’t comply, but then she decides she’ll just give a kiss instead of receiving one, and leans in to kiss Binggeure.

He sits there stunned, and then she leans in close, “How about it, tonight… die-die?” LOL. She’s the dangerous sunbae! She tells Binggeure he’ll be drinking all night with her, and that if he talks down to her one more time, he’s dead. That was a pretty good twist.

The entire group is passed out in one big heap, and Binggeure is the only one who can’t sleep that night. He sees Die-Die get up and sneak out in the middle of the night thinking nobody saw her, and she jumps in shock when she sees him standing at the bus stop next to her.

What, are we seriously giving Binggeure a boy AND a girl to possibly end up with? But… he loves Oppa, no? Why are we doing this?

For some reason she’s really shifty about her reasons for leaving the MT early, and won’t tell him why. But he just waits with her until the bus comes like a nice boy, and sends her off. He narrates:

Binggeure: The reason why youth is exciting is because there are countless things we don’t know. The empty spaces that I don’t know what to fill with overflow like a test before me. When I look back, there are no answers for those empty spaces. But the horror that someone will run in holding the answer sheet and grade me, the fear that I will have answered differently from everyone else… they made my age twenty a constant breathless hour of test-taking.

A few days later, Binggeure gets a message from Die-Die, nervously chattering away while asking if he wants to get together for lunch because she has old class notes to pass along, since she’s throwing them away and all.

He thinks about it for a moment, and then picks up the phone. “Sunbae-nim, it’s me…”

But he calls himself dahp-dahp-ie (“frustrating”). Aw, you’re calling Garbage, aren’t you? Oh puppy. “I just wanted to hear your v—… I was just wondering how you’re doing.” Oof.

Binggeure: 1997. I had to begin filling the spaces I had left empty for so long.

And then in May of 1997, we catch up to Garbage living in Busan. He rides the bus, and at one stop a group of high school kids gets on. Eeee! In walks Shi-won like a badass, followed by Sung-jae (Lee Shi-un) fawning over his Tamagotchi pet, and Yoo-jung (Shin So-yool) who exchanges a flirty look with Oppa.

When Joon-hee (Hoya) walks on, even Oppa marvels at how good-looking he is. And then Yoon-jae (Seo In-gook) struts past him, and Oppa mutters under his breath that that kid looks like he does terribly in school. Ha. I enjoyed those entrances so much.

The kids ride in the back row, and Shi-won sees a picture of Go So-young in her magazine and prompts Yoon-jae to tell her that they look alike. He asks if she wants to die, and I love how quickly her clipped version of “son of a bitch” comes flying out of her mouth. I luff her.

She goes from scritching his chin to grabbing his cheek like she’s about to rip it off his face, so he scoots up in Joon-hee’s space and throws his arm around him. Joon-hee tenses up immediately, and Yoon-jae makes it even worse when he reaches over and plucks the earbud out of Joon-hee’s ear so they can share, and then whispers into his ear to raise the volume. Squee. Waaah, I missed you guys! I didn’t even know how much until now.

While Joon-hee tries to contain his swoon, H.O.T. comes on over the bus radio speakers, and Shi-won perks up to hear her oppas. But from his seat two rows ahead, Garbage asks the bus driver to turn the volume down. Uh-oh.

Shi-won immediately tells the ajusshi to turn it back up, and they go another round, until Garbage yells it a third time, muttering that they’re just punks who can’t even sing. Huck! I love the oh-shit look on Yoon-jae’s face.

Shi-won shakes off Yoon-jae’s warnings to let it go and screams for the volume to be raised, and glares a hole through Garbage’s head. He makes the mistake of picking a fight with her, and warns that her eyes will flip over that way, muttering under his breath that she looks like a flounder.

She spits right back that he looks like a gangster and a rockfish, and he actually gets so worked up that he stands up to go face off with her. They scream back and forth, first about looking like gangsters and then about using banmal, and Garbage asks how old she is.

Shi-won screams at the top of her lungs: “Eighteen!” [ship-pal, which she purposely chooses because it sounds like shi-bal, or fuck, and says it exactly the way she means it]. Now both sides are livid, screaming Eighteen?! Eighteen!! at each other like a curse word. I’m cry-laughing.

Garbage gets so pissed that he actually reaches to pull her hair first. What? That’s not something Oppa would do! Garbage is petty but I don’t think he’d pull a girl’s hair who wasn’t his almost-sister. Shi-won should’ve thrown the first punch, is all I’m sayin’.

To be fair it’s a super girly fight, and Yoon-jae somehow acrobatically squeezes himself between them while they’re yanking each other’s hair, and the whole group gets bunched up in this crazy mess.

Meanwhile the light turns red and the bus driver has to come to a sudden stop, and we just hear the painful sound effects of the screeching brakes and the tumble in the back of the bus.

The rear door opens to reveal a giant dogpile, with Oppa as the roadkill at the very bottom. LOL. Everyone’s writhing in pain when he suddenly starts screaming that he can’t feel his arm. Pwahaha.

COMMENTS

That was a fun episode, but oh man, the 1997 cameos only highlighted how much I missed the original magic of that show. Granted, 1994 has its own fairy dust; it does. It’s just that the reminder comes at a time when this show is starting to really sag under its own weight, while 1997 will always hold that prized place in my heart.

And yes, part of that is just Sung Shi-won and her irreplaceable charm, but I think it’s also because 1997 was all about high highs and low lows, while 1994 tries to purposely subvert the big drama moments while highlighting the mundane. It’s amusing for a while, but then when all of the significant moments of Oppa and Na-jung’s relationship get passed over in fast-forwards, I’m always left really confused about why I’m not allowed to see the best stuff. I want to cry and I want to swoon and I want to feel the giddy romance, but the show has for some reason decided not to let us in.

It’s not like I don’t get the appeal of everything being a mystery. It’s fun. But the obvious problem is that you have to reward our engagement with payoff, and the more balls you juggle in the air and the longer you keep them there, the less we start caring. Even Binggeure’s crush on Garbage doesn’t hold a candle to Joon-hee’s crush on Yoon-jae because we’re not told explicitly what Binggeure feels.

I’m pretty certain that Binggeure’s orientation isn’t that much of a mystery after this episode, but I also don’t want to feel like I’m grasping at straws for every single character’s loveline either. Throw me a bone. I mean, two seconds of Joon-hee’s flushed cheeks hurt my heart in the best way, so it’s not like you don’t know how to do it. I really just want the drama to say a thing instead of dancing the dance of implication and reveling in its own cleverness. Show, you are clever. You’re all kinds of clever. There, there. Now give me the emotional payoffs, dammit. I don’t mind if Binggeure is slow to figure things out for himself if that’s his trajectory. Just let us go with him, k?

I say this all with love because this is a franchise that’s near and dear to my heart, and a cut above the rest. But I’m also not going to watch with blinders on because of that, and I want a little more. I know it CAN deliver more, which is the other part that hurts. You can doooooo eeeeeet. Please, let me in on Oppa’s thoughts and Na-jung’s heart. I feel like it’s been years since we got to feel their feelings, and I don’t even know why because I WANT to feel them. I actually thoroughly enjoyed this episode, mostly because the central romance got sidelined and I really shouldn’t be happy about that. I really hope I’m not still saying this by Episode 20, but: Take me with you.

Did everyone catch Chilbong calling NJ's dad as father instead of coach in the present scene?

I thought the thumb war "I'll kill you" scene with NJ, T, and NJ's father was hilarious. Omg dad's face afterwards esp after when NJ was dancing was priceless. And when NJ's dad said he would break his kid's legs if they were crazy like the girl on the tv LOL that was Shi Won, his daughter in 1997 hahahahahah again, why is appa-nim so awesome?

I'm wondering though, what was the point of Joon, NJ's brother when they never show him?

Also I didn't expect Yoon Jin Yi's surprise cameo! I really loved answer 1997's cameo and oppa's analysis of them haha and oppa's level of maturity, fighting with an eighteen year-old, made me lol

Omg I really miss Chilbongie this episode too!! Good thing I'll get to see more of Yoo Yeon Seok in movies. I love this man <3 it's his time to shine in 2013/2014. I hope the other cast members (Jung Woo, Go Ara, Son Ho Joon etc.) also get more drama/film offers. I'll be sure to check them out unless.. it's a makjang or melodrama haha xD

Back to AM94, I bet everything that Oppa is the husband. It's too late for CB. Congrats Oppa shippers! I will go in the corner and...
rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer now.

Anyways, can someone please tell me what was the purpose of this episode? I think I missed it because this wasn't the best episode imho.

Last but not least, thanks so much for the recap <3

Yes! Where is little bro Joon? How hard would it have been to have a succession of toddlers crawling then running through the time lapse scenes of them watching the music show?

I missed Chilbongie too, but like you I am so happy to know that he has a busy 2014, which is great for him and for us :).
I do still believe that CB is the husband, fingers crossed :)

Me too! there are just little things in the present time that seem to indicate that Chilbongie is the husband, for exemple in this episode the fact that he's the first to ask NaJung who's at the door! and in another episode, he's the one who's ordering the pizza...for me, it means he 's the host with Na-Jung! and there are other little things in the first épisodes that tell me he's the husband/ host of the party with Na-Jung.

But maybe the screenwriters just put these things to mislead the viewers!!!

But I also misses the 1997 group! there's no magic in this 1994 version, I don't feel the same level of intimacy between Na-Jung and Oppa as I did with Shi Won + Yoon Jae,their chemistry was sizzling from beginning to end and even the couple Yoo Jung+ Hak Chan was so cute!!! I missed these two, especially Hak Chan...

I think the whole point of Joon is that he came to the parents right when Oppa was starting to like Najung back. So it was like a gift of a new son so that Trash Oppa wouldn't have to fill in the role of son of the family - left open when najung's brother died - and could like Najung back freely.

I'm totally with you on: What's the purpose of this ep?
As much as I loved Reply 1997 and its chars, the cameos didn't excite me. I feel that it was sth over and done with, and why are you serving me leftovers a year after my favorite meal?

Also, like u say, if the parents come to visit, shouldn't Joonie show his face? They can come to pick up the liquor And visit their baby, no?

And yah, where is Our Joon?

I don't feel frustrated that the show is not letting us feel more of Trash Oppa or Bing's feelings. We don't need to have all the feels in every drama. It's nice to sit back and let the char's world unfold at a slower pace and lower level of intensity for a change. That's its charm for me.

Enjoy a show as it is meant to be or clamor for it to be sth that I want it to be. The former way is more kosher and enjoyable IMO.

Love your last paragraph.
I mostly got over the disappoint after the first few episodes when i realized that it wasn't going to be the same as 1997. Then, when i judged 94 on its own accounts, i wasn't nearly as disappointed and started to love it, warts and all.
Sigh, 94 shouldve shot the husband mystery in the foot and maybe we could all agree to this.

I thought I would be the only one who would think there was no point to this episode. And the cameos in the end were not what I expected. It really bothered me that he attacked Shi-Won first. Oh well, I guess that on episode extension had to be filled with something...

Trash Oppa's fight with Shi Won didn't make me laugh at all. In fact, it was such a big turn off. Shouting, yes. But actually hurting Shi Won? Yaiks!

This episode just made me miss AM1997. At first, I though AM1994 was better, but then at this point, it has lost it's touch. Such a drag.

How much do I love the parents.  Every scene they are in I am laughing like a maniac or crying like a baby. They are one of the best parents in kdrama history. Oh the meta in this episode. I just love it.

You can tell that the writers love oppa's character and Jung Woo. I can't see anyone else playing this part. I only wish that NJ would have more of a story other than oppa. She is either with oppa or talking about oppa. I always thought this drama was about NJ but now it seems it about oppa. The best scenes are with him.

Oppa is the female version of Shi-won! Hahahaha!! No wonder they fought. What a way to bring the cast of 1997 in. Oh how I missed them. More please.

Everyone knows who the end game is, so please writers stop trolling with the 2013 scenes . First Haitai comment about being together for 15 yrs and then with CB making coffee for the mom. If I went to my son-in-law's new house and he didn't offer to make me coffee, I would be upset. Why do they have to focus on his hands when he gives the coffee? Every time they show the husband, they focus on the hands. It could be that oppa got up after CB to make the coffee and gave it to mom. Who knows, they do love to yank our chains. Whatever happens, there is going to be a lot of heartache!

I just have one question: What does the red monkey mean? In one of the scenes, a red monkey was holding the bear. Could it have some meaning or one the writers trolling us again?

The HT comment was about HIS relationship. Wether he ends up with NJ or not it was not about that, but how he is together with HIS wife since 15 years, which means shortly after he returns from the army he will start a relationship with her.
That means we will learn his story. And if he would end up with NJ then that would happen then (I doubt it, no matter how much I love him, I mean NJ and T are very much together in 1997 spring, their relationship is very solid, even if it wouldn't work out I see no way NJ starting a new relationship that soon. So that comment actually made me even more sure that HT is not the husband)
though I am pretty sure it will be about an another girl. You can see it as trolling, but it is an actual clue about his future.
While CB is trolling. He is pretty much an angel to NJs parents, so you can interpret it either way.
Just saying not every clue is about the LT.

The monkey is Shi-won. The monkey is seen holding on to the arm of the gorilla (Oppa). This just represents that Shi-won is the reason Oppa broke his arm. They symbolize Shi-won as a monkey because of her similiarity in character with that of Oppa. At least that's my take on it.

I get what you mean, Binggeure's my favourite character... which might explain why I started cursing up a storm when they started hinting that he could end up with the Die-Die sunbae. Don't get in between my OTP of the show!

"Binggeure just says it’s someone Garbage knows too, and that alone must be enough of a clue to him, because it makes him smile."
Also, the above line is starting to make me worry, mainly because Oppa knows the Die-Die sunbae. OPPA, ACQUAINT YOURSELF WITH JOON-HEE! NOW!

Best were the dancing in front of TV scenes.

Ah, I loved seeing Yoon Jin-yi - she was simply awesome in Mandate of Heaven falling in love and not understanding any of it. She is about as sweet as can be here, too. Come on, Bingie- she's eating out of your hands!!

Thanks for the recap. It always makes the episodes better.
I am not a 97 fan, and watching this quick cameo reminded me about the hitting. Too much hitting. Shi-won to Yoon-jae I mean.

I don't mean Oppa - that I get - it's ridiculous and of course unimaginable that he would go after a HS girl on the bus.

The romances with both brothers felt forced in 1997.

The real emotional parts of 1997 was the revelation of who the older brother's fiancee who was killed in the bus crash was and the phone call to Shi-won that she knew was bad, bad news.

While I totally get GF's issues w/ 1994 regarding the relationships/crushes in trying to prolong the mystery, I just enjoy all the day to day/little things in life moments w/ the accompanying humor.

If there is a reason why the writers have done what they did, we'll know soon enough.

Yoon Jin-yi as Die-die was totally cute and yes, Shi-won should have attacked Trash 1st (my 1st reaction to the scene was really? and that it was a bit much, but then the humor of ending really saved it).

The only part I liked about the episode was the reply 1997 cast that part was so fun.... But really I'm so tired of the game of who is the husband ..... Is so obvious that tarts is her husband so why make everything so confusing... Second CB is totally out of the picture in this episode and the next one too what's the point... Just revealed that her husband is trash so us CB fan can stop having hopes there are only 4 episodes left and it would be stupid is they do a 360 on this show .... I do recognize the show is but for real is lacking a little b what's the hold point of who is the husband where everyone knows is trash .... Just my opinion don't get offended by this

This episode made me realize how much i missed the Reply 1997 cast. seriously I died laughing during their entrance in the bus. Yoo Jung and her flirty gaze to Trash oppa. OMG. i loveeeee it!

Anyway, i missed Chilbong in this episode. I love Trash oppa and i want him for myself but I have always been Team Chilbong. And it breaks my heart that I finally or I should start letting go of it. It's already ep 18 next week, and Trash oppa is miles ahead of Chilbong now. Can I just cry?

And i'm happy Binggeure finally had his own share of story. It's so beautiful and i could totally relate to it.

I've already watched the raw episode 17 and I'm not gonna say anything about it but fast forward friday pleaseeeee.

chil bong fans are not really delusional in a sense that everything they base their hopes on are non-existent.

there are the 2013 scenes, and in those scenes, chil bong and na jung seem like a married couple.

there are also the 2002 scenes, in the wedding, where it really seems that chil bong and na jung seem like they are getting married. for instance, the way the groom laughs, that's how chil bong laughs, covering his mouth with his fist. first time you can see it is in the ramen scene in episode 4, but there are also other scenes where he does the same mannerism.

yes, these may be small things that may be explained away, or not, but the consistency and parallels in the 2002 and 2013 scenes with the 1990s scenes are shown even with the other characters: yoon jin and coffee, hai tai being friends with kim gi tae, etc.

you can visit soompi forum threads for actor yoo yeon seok, and maybe the chil bong and na jung couple (if you still want them to be together in the end).

most of the people there are really funny with their comments, down one moment then up the next moment.

i also like all their theories and analysis. they may not really apply to the drama, but it's still interesting to read all about it just the same.

i really like the theory for the number 7 for chil bong (his nickname is literally seven shut outs). it may actually just be related to tvn's (the drama network's) seventh year anniversary this year but i think it's interesting that chil bong's episodes are related to seven, like in episode seven (shirtless baseball practice scene, and the baseball stadium walk scene) and in episode fourteen (the goodbye in the snow and handshake scene).

i'm not certain if any of these are intentional and if episode twenty-one will still be about joon though but reading it was interesting as i never noticed it until it was pointed out.

they also have a theory about how the writer keeps on emphasizing the 9 ends, 2 outs thing in baseball and this week is the 9th week of the drama and 2 outs can be [SPOILER DELTED]

i find reading it fun, and i love how the people are still hopeful and optimistic, and if you have time, you may want to check said forum threads.

I think the problem is not so much that the writers, directors, and characters mislead me and played a husband guesting game with me. I think the truth is after years of watching Asian drama with wishy washy, idiotic, shelf sacrificing heroine’s that my mind is pre-program to expect my leading lady to be that way. So when I'm faced with a straight forward heroine, who tells me "My wish is to marry Oppa" or "Oppa I like you" my mind goes no, it can't be that simple the writer and characters have some trick up their sleeves, how can the answer be that simple.

Ha Ha! Havent watched 94 yet, waiting for it to finish. But your reason is exactly why I loved Reply 1997. My fav scene in the drama was in the car when Shiwon asks YJ if he still likes her and says she likes him as a guy. So straight forward which completely flusters YJ. Reply franchise with all their faults and plot repetitions I think the reason they are so popular is because they break away from the shackles of typical Kdramas. I have re-watched 97 several times and every single time it is as enjoyable as my first watch. I hope 94 is as good as that.

1. SO we learn that whoever will be HTs wife he will start the relationship with her shortly after he returns. In 2013 SCP sais its been 15 years for him. That would mean 1997. HT will come back around the summer or autumn (it is curently 1997 spring)? I guess. But then NJ said it is more than 15. Which means he already knows the girl who will be his wife. Anyaway I will be looking forward to his story, because I am sure it will be featured, and he is one of my favourute. I loved how at the beginning he was the stiff guy at the bottom, and the second time we saw he he was the one ordering around others LOL.

2. SCP and YJ, always love them.

3. It was great seeing the scenes with the parents, and with NJ and Trash. Took me back to the beginning to the drama. Dad is hilarious. In the previous episodes they had only a few scenes and I really missed them.

4. BG was the star of today episode. I can really relate to him, feeling so loss at the first days at the uni in the big city, and I can realte to his confusion about himself and what he wants as well. (*I already know what happens in ep 17*) )It was great seeing his story.

5. It was great seeing the 1997 gang. But I thought the writers made Oppa kinda out of character for the sake of the Shi Won Oppa fight. Though I do agree that Oppa and Shi Won are somewhat similar.

6. It was great that the love line wasn't the main point in this episode. I loved how finally the other characters got to shine. Yet what we saw from it was really nice, and I got all fluffy inside seeing those few scenes. The saying less is more is compeletly true in this case. I love them, but I hope the NJ love story won't take over the episodes as much as in the 14-15 did. I feel like episode 14-15 suffered the most from the extension. Since I guess the endings were already done (BG, HT other characters), and you have to leave that story to the later episodes, they put the extensions in the middle episodes. So I hope that the story will be picked up.

7. Honestly I didn't miss CB. And just that shows how his character is really about nothing else but the love triangle. Hence an episode where there is less LT, and romance is not the focus has less CB as well.

Oh I forgot to add:

8. I don't get why everyone is bringing up the tired of the who the husband guessing game etc, when in this episode only the small scene in 2013 catered to that storyline. (I understand, in ep 14-15)
Aside from that in this episode the focus was at compeletly elsewhere...
I mean just time how much more screentime was about BG, than that few seconds at the beginning. That was really nothing at all.

I think regardless if they focus on the mystery or not for an episode, people are still gonna feel like they're dragging it out simply because they're not given a definite answer. Which is why it's going to "drag" until episode 21, where they finally reveal who the husband is. It was like that for AM97 too. But of course, we all know who the husband is by now if we've been actively watching the show, and its even clearer in the next episode.
The ones that choose not to accept it are still holding onto hope for CB, which i completely understand. I would be too if i shipped chilbong for na jung. Hope has never bothered me.
Only will we accept and move on can we find any semblance of enjoyment in the rest of the episodes.
I did enjoy how this episode deviated from the central romance for once, and we got some focus on our secondary characters as well as the great cameos.

"life starts after the bottom of the ninth with two outs."

what if it's kinda literal? but it's meant for the viewers?
bottom of the ninth--> eps. 16 and 17 are the ninth week of the show
two outs--> chilbong was out for both episodes. out of korea and out of screentime/the storyline (save for some measly minutes).

just a thought i wanna put out there cos i refuse to believe that the writers would intentionally sideline one of the gang. it doesn't seem like something they would do (to chilbong nonetheless), given how the "side" characters' aka haitai's yoonjin's and samcheonpo's and now binggeure's stories are being fleshed out.

huhu or maybe reply 1997 has given me too much and now i'm expecting too much!:( i just feel like the show was imbalanced without all of the gang appearing! and i wanna see them all together soon. their friendships are what i love most about the show.:(

While I agree with you that AW 94 feels frustrating at times with all the beating-around-the-bushes and what not, I think this has to a lot to do with who these characters are as people. In AW 97, at that tender age, they are naturally more egocentric creatures. It's not a bad thing; it just a thing that when you're 16, 17 all that matters is your feelings, your heart. That's why it's easier for them to let others get hurt. That's why Shi-won was so ignorant towards Yoon-jae's feelings and Yoon-jae towards Joon-Hee's. The characters in 94 are different; they have a little bit more to worry about. But the age is just a factor. Ultimately, they are just very different people. Shi-won is a strong girl while NJ is that much more vulnerable. Yoon-jae is the perfect golden boy while Trash is flawed and insecure. That's why I think the writing here is no less brilliant than that of AW 97 if not more. The subtlety in internal conflicts is done so well. In short, the writing is sensitive, truthful, and more importantly, respectful towards the characters.

Just like everyone has said -- it's pretty obvious who the husband is now, and has been for a while. So honestly, going forward, I feel like the trolling love triangle angst everyone is going on about is partly audience projection? You've gotta be grasping at straws to think Chilbong is the husband at this point -- and I say this as someone who's been rooting for Chilbong for the first half of the show. There's just a point where you gotta admit that you're favourite character IS a second lead, probably won't get the girl, and just go along for the ride now.

This dramas length is it's greatest weakness. Because it's so long they let those meandering moments go on for too long and that's what dulls the higher moments for me. Oh how much this could have benefited from a shorter length.

The time skips are hella annoying and confusing, but I'm not sure I'm all there with you when you say that AM94 doesn't give us payoff for the big moments? Or that they don't let us in on how they're feeling? The whole Bing thing is an issue in itself on queerbaiting and I can go on about that, but I don't feel that way with Oppa and Najung. I mean, it doesn't really take much to figure out how they're feeling at a certain moment? The time skip with their relationship seems like it's there to drive the narrative forward -- and I don't feel like I missed out on much? Granted, I'm in the minority that think Trash/NJ have great chemistry together but I don't know. I think it's preeeety obvious how both of them feel? The fact he told her parents, how upset she was about him going to Busan, the way they act so giddy around each other. The feelings are right there in front of us, the problem is that it's mixed in with half an hour of pure nothing and it's significance gets downplayed. I really liked the main romance this episode because having Najung pine over Oppa SO BADLY for a good half of the show, I just gotta feel content with how it worked out with them.

Anyway, I guess I'm in the minority that prefers 94 to 97. 97 was nicely executed, but AM94 has me actually caring about the characters in a realer way. Objectively it's hard not to crown 97 a winner, but there are some intrinsic things about enjoying a drama that you can't ignore.

Wasn't a fan of the 97 cameo once Trash went at it with Siwon. If Trash thinks it's appropriate to go and pull a High School girl's hair then he really is Trash. I get that it was done for Comedic Effect, but I dont think the writer is aware of how much he threw Trash under a bus.

Alsoooooo, sometimes I do wish Yoonjin was Haitai's girlfriend instead ;P This isn't to hate on SCP (alright maybe a little, never been a fan of him), but they were so cute in that scene and I'd like to see how Haitai deals in a relationship with that little spitball.

[As a side note, I do not understand the issue with not enjoying the main romance because of lack expressions of emotion, but finding Yoonjin/SCP's great. When that was even more elusive and as Yoonjin said, they kinda just got together in the midst of being enemies. I get that they're a side pairing so it was a given they not have that much development. But this goes for both sides, like why is Najung/Chilbong or Naming/Garbage a terrible ship in how it's been developed and handled, but SCP/YJ is where the romance is at.]

This! Completely agree with EVERYTHING you say.
I love this comment cause it's basically been pulled straight out of my brain without me having to process it into words to type out.

The time skips right after na jung and trash got together made me sad -- but only for a short while because i never felt like they took away from the firsts of their relationship. Na jung still smiles sheepishly after trash kisses her, they still fight like dogs, oppa confessed to parents, nd they go on dates regularly, so it's not like we missed a good chunk of them spending time together after getting together. It would be just the same if there weren't a time skip. I think if you're upset with show for skipping that chunk, it's also probably because you may find yourself still not completely convinced on their romance, or are still waiting for the moments that make you root/fall for them as a couple. If not, you're just not going to buy it and will forever hold that against show. Also, if i'm not mistaken, wasn't there a couple of time skips after yoon jae and shi won got together. It's a bit fuzzy so correct me if i'm wrong.

And i completely agree with the part where you talk about 97 in relation to 94. the 97 cameos made me nostalgic and fangirling, but nostalgia aside, to me 94 will always have the better relationships/characters. i was mostly focused on shi won and yoon jae for 97, and that was about it.. For some, it's like a replay of their own youth, so I get that its always going to hold a special place.

But i also don't get where we're being left out of our character's feelings in 94 -- i only felt that way about trash when he was being wishy washy, and we're over that stage now. Na jung always wore her heart on her sleeve and so did chilbong. And the rest of the boarders. Not being able to feel what these characters means that you don't identify with it as much as you want to. Binggeuri isn't outright gay -- but that's because the director told Baro from day 1 to act ambiguously and to roll with it. Truth be told, do we really want another repeat? Nothing beats joon-hee's epic crush on yoon jae. I love how we're given more insight into binggeuri this episode, but he's no joon-hee, and I know that enough to separate the two.

I think it's mostly which character you connect with most. If you're someone who connects more with shi won then you're probably going to understand her feelings more.
I connect more with na jung, so i feel like i understand her character's feelings clear as day.
I am happy to be in this minority with you, dropthebass. It can get a bit lonely, but it's good to know there's someone there.

I appreciate that BG is confused (I haven't watched epis 17 yet). The way he said that he has to put an answer on his paper, and he's deadly afraid that his answer will be different than everybody else. I'm not gay, but I think I've been confused on my own choices in life, so I think that's what BG is feeling at that moment. He's allowed to be confused and uncertain, and I love that this show chose to go to that path. I think it's brave and different.

I absolutely adored that Na Jung was speechless until the restaurant and then she cried. All that emotional anguish pent up and finally released...I would have cried too. It was such a gorgeous scene.

As a whole, I think 97 is better, reflecting the time period in which they exist and weaving the story throughout so that it makes sense. I can watch the entire thing again and still enjoy it immensely.

94 has more experienced actors, and their emotional delivery is exquisite. I don't think I would watch it again, because its just too slow, but I will rewatch certain scenes because they are so touching and beautiful.

yea oppas decision to yank shiwons hair first was COMPLETELY for comedic effect. ppl should blame the writers, not attack oppas integrity. LOL

and yea i think the progression between NJ and oppas relationship is really good! like you said, they hit all the main milestones in their relationship. even they way they kiss has changed - it goes from NJ being shy about kissing--> she actually participates--> initiates.

and just the way they treat each other... they still fight like "dogs" sometimes , but its still very apparently theyre a couple. the scene today where they were doing the thumb war captures this perfectly. thats the magic of their relationship - one second they can be all immature and fighting like before, but a second later, they are cuddling and care about each other so much.

i feel like the way their relationship has grown over time is very believable and realistic. from the initial dating and all the buildup to getting together officially, NJ and oppa slowly getting used to their change in status, telling NJs parents, NJs parents slowly accepting them (NJs dad even purposely pulled everyone in so they could have alone time before oppa left to busan, and etcetc (ep 17 stuff).

I agree with you. I feel like i'm being more talkative than usual because now it's no longer shipping wars but a matter of what the better show is -- 94 or 97. So i feel compelled to defend the show that's receiving so much criticism as of late.

The pulling of the hair was definitely to start the over-the-top (but still funny) cameo. It was purely out of comedic effect. It was out of trash's character, WE all know that. Shi won should have been the one to punch him first, or something. But you reap what you sow, trash. With a broken arm, rightly so.

This truth! I agree so much.

I think for a while now a lot of the anger, hate, and frustration viewers go on and on about is a small part warranted in some instances but majorly majorly audience projection and disappointment that what want to happen is now where the story was every about or heading. If you let go of the wants and watch as as and as been presented the story is logical and hasn't really been toying that much unless you choose to see meaning and importance in every little thing.

0

Agreed on audience projection. This drama has it's fair share of HUGE flaws (especially recently), but I definitely think people's expectations when it came to the shipping warped their views. I mean, I can't REALLY blame them? With all the 2013 CSI posts, and people pretty much having convinced themselves Chilbong or whatever would be the husband, I can see why they'd be disappointed. I'm pretty sure if the drama decided to go for a Chilbong/Najung ending (and built up to it properly) another half of the fandom would be upset at how things were going.

i agree with a lot of this. the queerbaiting..lord. but, yea. i find this series kind of more personal, and najung/oppa greater than the 97 couple but at the end they're very different dramas in terms of what they wanted to convey and searching for comparisons is only going to let others down. i think because 97 was first people see less flaws or less critical but. they are just..different.

What's with the rampant anger over the drama playing it straight with the first lead getting the girl? And how they expected so much more from Reply and their twists. Like, where are these expectations coming from? It's not like Reply 1997 was so innovative on that part. Played it way more straight than this one did as a matter of fact.

Binggurae's love line was dumb and I refuse to acknowledge it. If this is what subverting expectations get, then no thanks. Homosexual representation isn't something I believe drama writers have a right to play around with knowing what it means to so many people.

Regarding your second point, I actually think the drama addresses the issue in a really interesting way. So far in korean culture and maybe even elsewhere, people tend to think of sexuality as a Boolean variable where you can only either be heterosexual or homosexual. But the reality is that sexuality is a sliding scale, and the show places emphasis on the person you fall in love with, not just their gender, and also did a wonderful job of portraying binggeurae'so struggle and confusion in coming to terms of who he is. That kind of sensitivity and character depth is really something that you don't see anywhere else.

I agree that if the drama explores sexuality as being on a sliding scale rather than a black and white value, then it's definitely progressive in it's outlook. But I can't bring myself to believe that's what it is? I mean, the drama can definitely prove me wrong in the coming episodes, but thus far it definitely seems a lot more like they built up the impression of Bing being gay, just so they could subvert it later. Rather than it being an expression of the different facets of sexuality.

Maybe I'm not giving the writers enough credit -- but I find it VERY hard to believe that the latter was what they were going for. Looking at previous depictions of sexuality in K-Drama, I don't have enough faith in these writers to somehow be revolutionary. Just like the Oppa-Najung non-sibling reveal, this seems to be built up just to become a "Ha! Gotcha!" moment. It really depends on how the next few episodes follow through on Bing's affections for Trash. If they play it out to be a "oh yeah, it was always a Hyung thing", then I can't really say this drama tried anything new. If otherwise, then well... there were definitely better ways to go around it, rather than this way that tried a bit too hard to be cheeky.

I agree that trash being revealed as the non-brother is a "gotcha" moment, but for binggeuri it's always been open to interpretation. I completely understand that this writer and her trolling schemes are really making people distrust her and i get that that's how it felt when it was hinted that binggeuri may not be gay. But there never really was a confirmation of sorts, only speculation that Binggeuri was gay because he was so shy/happy around trash.
Perhaps i'd like to give this writer the benefit of the doubt and say that it wasn't a "gotcha" moment, but what heejung mentioned above. I think i give alot of credit because of binggeuri's voiceover --"The reason why youth is exciting is because there are countless things we don’t know. The empty spaces that I don’t know what to fill with overflow like a test before me." Seems like we get a bit of insight into his thoughts and his struggle.

There's been so much disappointments lately that i'm trying to be optimistic, heh.

I really loved how they showed the history between Bing and Oppa. Soooo cute and squeal-worthy, it's understandable why he would like him...he took care of him from the very beginning. I love their relationship but I feel so bad for Bing because it's obvious he is in a one-sided unrequited gay love because Oppa loves Na-jung. I feel like unrequited gay love is a theme in so many shows/movies but I hope Bing has a hot and loving boyfriend later...but not Joonhee because they don't seem like they would go together. Well I don't think. Also this episode was really slow, 1994 is always slow but really! I liked the cameo I was laughing alot and I never realized how much I missed 1997 till now. I also thought it was weird that he went for her first, she should of fought with him first, but it was all for comedic purposes anyways. I hope this show picks up, because I always look forward to 1994 and this was so meh! Except for showing Bing's history/love-line.

I was so giddy when this episode opened up with seo in gook & jung eun gi's DUET ost for 1997 but then i completely spazzed out when the whole friggin cast (BEST cameo EVER. seriously, what show can get the whole cast minus eun ji won to come on?) walked onto that bus like it was a red carpet event. I felt like one of those fangirls on the sides screaming and flailing my arms around.
I miss these kids, but i'm not going to hold it over AM94 for not having the same ins and outs. it's got its own niche. Ya can love it or hate it.. but it's all up to the beholder.

Also, really glad that CB shippers have yoo yoon seok's movie roles to hold onto. Atleast we know he's off being busy with these new projects instead of being shelved like he is in recent episodes. The show is really doing a disservice to CB, and i swear to god if they just remove him now only to make him become the means of getting in between the endgame, i'm going to have words with this writer, only because she CHOSE the path she wanted to (in terms of OTP) and she better stick with it and not have lovable characters like CB simply be that. he deserves more.

In the beginning, I was team Oppa however after ep 4/5, I thought that Oppa Trash was gay and had a relationship with BG. However, after Oppa finally confessed his feelings for NJ to CB, I went back to team Oppa. Don't get me wrong, I truly like CB and I would have been happy if he ended up with NJ. However, up to this point, he has been in a one-side love and NJ/Trash relationship has just gotten stronger. And yes, I have seen episode 17 but I won't spoil it in this post. Of course, I was giddy over the cameos of the 1997 cast, but I prefer the storyline in 1994 better.

I only ask the the writer of these reviews to tone down her bias against NJ/Trash relationship.

I believe CB will be the husband. I like how the story is written - making him a very noble man who doesn't mess with other ppl's relationship. Let's all watch - NJ will come to him on her own because she will soon realize that Trash is not the right guy for her. She might even go to Japan for work and meet CB again, pursuing her career, having her own life and becoming mature to choose a good hubby. She's a computer engineering major- a smart girl, not the one with her life revolving around a man. These two eps have fleshed out gradually NJ and Trash's problem. And CB is the right guy for her. I'm a CB shipper, still hopeful but i am not delusional - let's bet. I'm pretty sure CB is the end game.

I don't understand why Bingurae's sexuality has to be such a big deal. Can't he be bisexual? There's nothing wrong with being attracted to or romantically interested in boys and girls.

If he were a girl character with an unrequited crush on Oppa, and then met a boy at the MT that could possibly hold his interest, no one would have batted an eye.

Yeah, there's way too much criticism on the handling of binggeuri's sexual orientation. Everyone thought he was gay, while a minority thought it could go either way since the "clear line" was never explicitly shown. What if 97 never had joon-hee, would people be so sure that binggeuri was gay? No, there would be speculation of whether or not the writer would have the balls to portray such character. Thus, it wouldn't feel like so much of a subversion if you viewed his character's sexual orientation to be ambiguous.. I dont blame anyone, i know we all wanted him to be the driver of the red car and happily end up with joon-hee, but ultimately it was a figment of our imaginations.
I think it's very interesting, and we've got plenty of binggeuris who are confused to pass around in the world. Not everything is as clear as black and white.
I guess the biggest complaint with people is the fact that the writer never set clear boundaries and now is giving binggeuri a possible love interest who happens to be a girl, so it feels like another trick since we weren't in on his thoughts. But binggeuri has always been shown to be a confused character who couldn't seem to find his path in life, or what he wanted(which was clearly depicted throughout the series). Maybe that same struggle could be attributed to him finding his sexuality. All of the boarders seem to be going through the same thing, to some extent..
Everyone just expected binggeuri to be gay, and because he might not be, they're disappointed, mostly because of the way it was handled.
Ach, just enjoy the show guys!

I think the disappointment lies in that some people, like me, would like to see diversity, homosexual characters represented in tv shows. Period. it doesn't matter if they end up with their crush, what matters is that they are written and are portrayed as real people, not stereotypes. I think WHAT does matter is if the character's sexuality is brushed off as having a bi-curious moment, rather than dealing with a homosexual character

In specifics to the Reply shows, I think what some people were hoping for is that what was started in R97 with implying Joon-hee was gay, would be expanded on in R94 with a character that would move beyond being the outsider or tragic.

I can understand that, but bisexuality is grossly underrepresented to, and to see people upset about it just seems unfair. It still is seen as people being bi-curious or gay but "not out of the closet yet."

Crushes are crushes. Some are sexual, others are not. I have five friends, four of them women who dated girls until their late twenties, early thirties, and are now dating a man. My guy friend who does not identify as gay, dated women, one in a very long term relationship, but found his life partner in a man. So these people who I see in real life, are not being reflected on TV either.

Well, considering the drama is almost over and he's had a crush on Oppa since the beginning, I would say its not a "moment" but a first love, albeit unrequited. I actually thing Die Die is perfect for him, but not because she's a girl, but because of her personality. If the character had been played by a boy, it also would have worked just as well.

Someone should edit out all the 2013 scenes, and show anyone whohas no clue about the reply me series, and ask them who they think is the husband.

What's important is not then, what's important is the now. You can date for 10 years but break up and marry someone else.

I think for the drama, though, "then" is "now." Like, in the way it's structured, 2013 is the future, not the present, and 1994-7 is the present, not the past. 2013 is like where we fast forward and see oh yay, they got married. Or hahaha, Haitai maybe got a job later in the army? Or, yes, husband trolling. But the real story, and what really matters, is what is happening in the 90s. 2013 trumping the 90s would be like watching nearly 30 hours of content, and watching the drama draw its natural conclusions, only to have the writers say, lol just kidding. And then it's like, what is the point???

That's an interesting concept and an interesting way of viewing a retrospective show. Butt the whole premise of the shows are in the title. "Reply" or "Answer Me"" is reflecting on what happened then and saying hey 1990 something self...what were you thinking? You have a lot to answer for!

I thought it was pretty clear for R97-it was more Shiwon and Yoon-jae centered- looking back about not dealing with their feelings.

R94-It's more of a ensemble cast reflection. But it's confusing on the leads...what exactly are Na-jeong and Trash asking of their past selves to answer for?

the way i see it, the next few episodes are going to be 18-19 Haetae & wife's story, 19-20 Chilbong & wife's story. Still hoping for tomboyish Baseball girl and Chilbong! Add to that the IMF crash, Y2k stuff and the actual wedding, we'll be at episode 21 with everyone's story told.
Even if I were to go against all the signs and my personal beliefs... i mean it's just so plain obvious and always has been Oppa but playing devil's advocate.. There just isn't enough time to add in Trash oppa's alternate loveline - give him his ending while at the same time building up Najung and Chilbong's "love story" realistically. If the writers are going to go to great lengths and focus on even the supporting characters their happy endings, i'm sure they wouldn't leave one of their mains high and dry.

However, I wouldn't put it past the writers to put in a break up between Najung and Oppa in the next few episodes because Go Ara is recording a certain OST track. But I have no doubts it won't last and they will get back together and are married at present.
How can they not! they are so in love and total ALL IN /one-person types.

If i am wrong then, i will watch episode 17 over and over again and believe that's the true ending :)

IDK Y but this drama is becoming more and more mundane, which need not necessarily be a good thing.

First there was the extension in the show length. This only prompted exaggeration of every moment rather than increase in meaningful content. It is like watching a 1990's soap.

Next I am missing the spunkiness of Na Jung. She gives off a "housewifey" vibes lately.

Then the "who married who" hijinks completely stole the show :-( Even heavy doses of Garbage and the cameo of "Reply 1997" cannot remedy it.

I agree with Jenn, I miss the group and I miss the heart of the "Reply me" series.

Can we have more Haitai moments.... why does't Najung visit him?
The writers are just filling in so to only show that Oopa as the husband in the end which I'm feeling will be because the drama is coming to an end and with "filler" episodes such as this there is no chance for any other romance to bloom... I'm not complaining... Bingeure got to shine but since the writers started a game from the beginning with "Guess, the husband" game, it is getting a bit frustrating...

I really really like this episode...
Its great to see Binggeure story flesh out, while we have fallen into the annoying period of coupledom for Samcheonpo and Yoonjin... And Haitai, I hope you get your story when you completed your army service...

I actually like the twist... I mean we all wished for Binggeure to end up with Joonhee from 1997. But I was actually glad with how the story is going... And I love Meahri from AGD. It was a meaningful cameo. Shouldn't say more realizing I am going into spoiler zone.

The part where Binggeure said filling in the blanks... its not just for this studies/major/future... but also his sexuality..
I mean wouldn't everyone at some point in their youth might have been confused... I know I was.

And really, how could Binggeure not fall for oppa... I mean the MT scene... he help hold his puppy's bag to complete the mountain hike... which is actually batshit crazy ass right up of the seniors... who hikes after a hangover??? Oppa stop being so perfect!

1997 cameo... omg... I love it... crazy teenagers are still teenagers... Love Yoojung checking Oppa out and Oppa observation that Joonhee is an angel. Spot on Oppa!
When I watch raw, I was worried like wth was Oppa doing fighting with a teen. Watching with subs..., I get it, hot blooded feisty Shiwon being Shiwon, basically said "eff you" to Oppa in camouflaged of her age...
I read a lot of comment that they were uncomfortable with the scene of Oppa picking a fight with Shiwon... but I got it. It was really rude... something I don't think Asian adults finds it acceptable. But oh well, all for laughter and impact, I would say.

Onee more thing... Appa may be undecided if he wants to support or disrupt the lovers... with him unsure if he wants them to cuddle or to fight... But I think its more of he rather that Najung going to Oppa's offictel all the time, like he said he won't have it if she "were to set up household". Implying if they are already kinda cohabiting(or have kids) before she graduate college, which I guess he rather have them under his nose.

And love Appa with his sense of letting them lovebirds have some quiet moment while they were all bidding farewell to Oppa. That was really sweet!!!

There's been a lot of slices of life moments for most of the characters but there hasn't been a lot of CB action lately and I really want to know what's the purpose of him being so isolated from the rest of the members now that he's in Japan. We see how Haitai is developing while he's in the military but there are absolutely no Japan scenes. In total, there's probably two minutes worth of CB on TV and in 2013 in the past two episodes. Haitai at least has written letters to the family and has visitors. CB has only called once so far. With so much time passing while he's in Japan, I feel like there needs to be more CB scenes if he's going to be so close to everyone in the future. Maybe it's just to build up the moment when he reunites with everyone. Maybe it's his way of keeping distance from NJ and focusing on himself. It's understandable that he's busy, I guess I just miss seeing him in action, merp.

I am also still wondering why father didn't really express his acceptance of NJ and Trash's relationship. There are a lot of things they leave up to interpretation which is sometimes nice in order to build up to the truth but at the same time there wasn't much closure and I hope that there will be closure in the future so that the ending of the drama comes full circle.
