Answer Me 1994: Episode 13

More than the unexpected connections, the tearful goodbyes, and the realization of feelings, I’m most thrilled that today brings us to that thing we’ve been sorely lacking: action. After all, what good is a decision if it’s only in the mind? Until you express that idea and let it out into the world, you can’t expect any rewards… so we’re left to hope that the setbacks associated with dragging one’s feet don’t turn out to be irreversible.

EPISODE 13: “The 10,000 hour rule”

In 2002, we finally wind down the most boring wedding ceremony in history, as a couple of guests speculate about the Very Special Wedding Singer coming today, whom Samcheonpo introduces… as himself, ha. Everyone grumbles in disappointment.

The song is The Blue’s “Feeling Only You,” and Samcheonpo declares himself the Sohn Ji-chang role in this duet, with someone else filling in for Kim Min-jong’s part. Ooh, I want it to be Binggeure, now a successful singer. Samcheonpo belts out the first verse, and passes the metaphorical baton over to his partner… omg, it’s Kim Min-jong? The real one? Oppaaaaaa! (Hey, y’all have Garbage oppa, I have Min-jong oppa.)

The mood swings back to excitement, and a few guests wonder if Kim Min-jong is related to someone in the wedding party. Ha, with all the Kims in this bunch, I’m sure that’s a distinct possibility, though Dad wears a particularly knowing smile on his face.

In 1995, it’s Kim Min-jong’s “Under Heaven” playing in the noraebang, sung by Samcheonpo, Haitai, and two buddies (one is department-mate Ki-tae, and the other’s a new guy). They sing their hearts out as Yoon-jin and her friend grimace, SO bored of their Kim Min-jong fixation. Yoon-jin takes the remote and cuts them off, ha, then selects the last number, which makes the boys grumble that she killed the mood. Hilariously, Haitai complains through the intro and then starts singing right on cue.

The song is “Inside the Army Train,” with lyrics like “I didn’t want to show you my awkwardly buzzed hair, I didn’t want to leave you in that crowd of waving people, will you forget me in the next three years?” Aww, this rubs salt in the wound for Ki-tae, who is the special guest of today’s party, having just been drafted.

At home, Na-jung freaks out when she can’t find the money she was in charge of keeping for her club’s upcoming party. It’s doubly bad because she’s in the running for club president, and this is not the way to get elected. Yoon-jin suggests that she ask Garbage—he’d probably let her get away with not repaying him, which is an idea Na-jung likes.

Na-jung joins Garbage at the kitchen table, and he starts nags her to sit up straight and take care of her back. She huffs that she’s been doing her exercises, but when he tells her to do a simple squat, she falls over. She argues that nobody can hold this position, only to be proven wrong by Yoon-jin.

Oppa heads out of the house before recalling that he actually came over to talk to Na-jung, and turns back. Uh, should I be worried that you forgot you were here to talk to her? Na-jung finds him to ask for the loan, and Garbage readily agrees to give it to her… if she can hold a squat for five seconds. Haha. That is a smart way to get her to do her exercises.

Then he asks her to meet him for dinner tomorrow because he has something to tell her, and her face takes on this fearful look that twists my heart. Gahhh oppa, would it kill you to alleviate her fear for even a moment? She asks him to tell her now, but he says he’ll do it tomorrow.

Na-jung gives Garbage a few things to pass along to others: a movie coupon for Middle Brother and a mix tape for Binggeure, who’s recovering from appendix surgery. Oh my, and is Garbage jealous at her attention toward the others? Then she mentions plans to help Chilbongie study, and Oppa advises her to half-ass the help, because she should focus on herself instead of everybody else. Oh Oppa. I understand the jealousy, but that’s kinda small of him.

Oppa’s mood darkens as he starts to leave, but Na-jung stops him and opens her arms wide, wanting a hug. He leaves her hanging for a rather nerve-racking moment, and I’m scared he’ll actually blow her off. He doesn’t, but the hug he gives her is weak and she misinterprets his reaction as evidence that he didn’t want to do it. He says it’s not that, but her feelings are hurt anyway. Oh my god just tell her.

Chilbongie leaves practice early for once to make his study date, to the irritation of a couple of teammates who harbor a long-festering resentment of him for being the star. The studying doesn’t go so well, and mention of essay questions has Chilbongie one step away from beating his head against the table. Na-jung asks why he picked this humanities course instead of an easier one, and he says it’s because she was taking it.

At least the essay prompt is the same from year to year: Who is your mentor? She points out that a lot of athletes have posters of sports heros they look up to and asks what he thinks about when he plays baseball. He answers simply that he doesn’t think of anything, and she tsk-tsks. It’s not a question he’s thought of before, and she tells him to pick somebody or make one up for the exam.

Garbage drops by to see Binggeure, who’s passing the time listening to music (Kim Min-jong, of course). Garbage hovers right over him, patting his head and tickling his chin like usual, and when he reaches over to check on the stitches in his side, Binggeure gets super-tense and nervous. After Garbage leaves, Binggeure buries his head under his blanket, all embarrassment/nerves/bashfulness. The show has been pretty coy about the question of whether Binggeure has a romantic crush on Garbage, but I’d say this is the closest hint we’ve had yet.

Na-jung is determined to get her squat balance position, but continues to struggle with it. More worrisome than getting her loan, however, is the question of Oppa calling her out for dinner alone. Yoon-jin’s suspicions align with Na-jung’s fears—it’s probably bad news. Maybe he’s going to tell her he has a girlfriend, or he’ll ask her to stop clinging so much. They decide that a last-minute cancellation would be best, and run through a mock phone call to get her story down.

On the other hand, Oppa’s gone the whole other way in preparing for tomorrow, marking it on his calendar as D-day and buying her a heart-shaped necklace. He smiles goofily to himself, but while his reaction is so cute, now I’m scared his slow-as-molasses approach is going to backfire on him.

Na-jung forgoes the drama-watching session tonight, so it’s just Chilbongie, Yoon-jin, Mom, and Dad who settle down in front of the TV. The parents launch into a whole meta conversation about how Na-jung’s newest crush Bae Yong-joon and that rookie Jeon Do-yeon are way too ordinary-looking to last long in showbiz, while the kids argue that those are the two who’ll make it big.

Dad asks Mom for a snack, which she doesn’t want to cook, so Chilbongie offers to buy some ddukbokki at the snack shop nearby. He lies about being a fan of the dish but we know it’s really Na-jung who inhales the stuff, and so he jumps up and dashes off eagerly.

The day before Ki-tae’s enlistment, the same foursome head down to the training center town to spend the night in a last hurrah. Haitai figures he won’t be called for a while since he hasn’t gotten a draft notice yet, but then we cut to the office in his hometown of Suncheon that handles military registrations. Uh-oh, not him too!

The boys are well into their cups in their motel room, surrounded by soju bottles and slurring about loyalty and friendship. Haitai assures Ki-tae that they’ll see him off till the very last moment, waving after his retreating figure, which makes me wonder how this is going to go horribly awry. Because it totally will, right?

Sure enough, in the morning it’s Ki-tae standing alone at the entrance to the training center with his newly shorn head. Hungover and lonely, he waits for a while as the other recruits pass him with their friends and family members in tow. Poor, poor Ki-tae, whose buddies are completely passed out in their room. *tears*

At practice, the two bitter teammates who bitched about Chilbongie leaving on his study date are tasked with moving the practice net, which they then drop on his foot. Dafuq? Chilbongie falls in pain, and while they didn’t injure him on purpose, holy crap is that a dick move—they don’t even apologize and run off instead.

Samcheonpo takes care of scholarship paperwork in the department office, where they learn that Yoon-jin’s scholarship fell through this semester. She and another student had the same overall grades, but the other one took more classes in their major and won out—a fact that has Yoon-jin seething on their coffee (turned beer) date afterward.

Yoon-jin fumes that the simpering teaching assistant pulled strings to favor her hoobae, but Samcheonpo misguidedly defends the other girl, approaching the discussion with cold logic. Eeeeek. It’s a wonder you aren’t being choked half to death— oh, and there it is, Yoon-jin’s patented one-handed chokehold.

Chilbongie’s catcher buddy corners the two net-droppers, and the instigator is infuriatingly dismissive about the injury. When asked if he’s jealous, though, he admits it defiantly—Chilbongie has everything going for him, plus he’s from a rich family whose father can afford to treat the team and buy the coach nice gifts, when his own father barely scrapes by selling knock-off clothing. His voice drips with sarcasm as he says that he got on the team because he was Chilbongie’s schoolmate, so people probably think he should shut up and be grateful.

I love how the catcher isn’t taking their bullshit, and reminds the two that since they went to the same high school as Chilbongie, they should know that he wasn’t always the star. In fact they were much better than him in high school—but instead of stewing in jealousy, Chilbongie practiced like a maniac.

Even the catcher thought Chilbongie didn’t have the talent to make it, until one day all his hard work started paying off. So save the inferiority complex and treat Chilbongie better, he warns, adding that until these guys just said so, he hadn’t even known they got on the team because of Chilbongie. The instigator looks stunned to hear that Chilbongie never once spread that story.

Chilbongie’s voiceover: “Effort isn’t seen—what people see is only the result. That’s why other people’s success might get called genius or luck.”

Chilbongie doesn’t break anything, thank goodness, and offers to drop by Binggeure’s room while he’s in the hospital. Meanwhile, Garbage gets ready for his date with adorable anticipation, humming “I’m Going To Love You”—which is when he gets that last-minute cancellation call from Na-jung.

He deflates as she rambles a long fake excuse about needing to tend to Yoon-jin who hurt her leg. Still, she can’t quite say no when Oppa tells her to come late anyway.

Mom, Dad, and baby Joonie indulge in a fancy dinner out at a Gangnam restaurant, and they get into a loud discussion of The Blue, that cocky new duo that doesn’t seem all that great. They agree that Sohn Ji-chang is way more popular than that weird Kim Min-jong guy who always sings pinching his nose and don’t see his appeal… just as Mom realizes in horror that Kim Min-jong is sitting right over there. Ack!

Mom and Dad cringe in mortification and wonder what to do. Dad tries to convince himself that he couldn’t have heard them, but after that table leaves, he sits in Kim Min-jong’s chair to check. Mom repeats her comments, confirming that sound carries louder than they feared, eek. Making things even more uncomfortable, Kim Min-jong then returns to the table and approaches Dad.

Dad bolts up and starts apologizing… only to find that Kim Min-jong is coming to him as a fan. Omg I love it. Dad even signs an autograph for him, which Min-jong oppa receives gratefully. Then he’s approached by the restaurant manager, because the credit card he paid with was maxed out. Lol. The second card is declined for being reported lost, and the third one has been frozen… Aie, I’m so mortified for him. This is so hilarious and discomfiting at the same time.

Cut to: Dad paying for both tables, and an abashed Min-jong promising to pay him back right away. Mom no longer has the least bit of starstruck response to him, but Dad grins at the idea of a celebrity phone number coming in handy one day.

Garbage joins Binggeure on a walk through the hospital hallway, and that’s when he hears about Chilbongie injuring his leg. Oh no, you’re going to think Na-jung lied, aren’t you? Okay, yes she did lie, but not to be with Chilbongie. Garbage excuses himself looking upset, and Binggeure watches him go with a worried expression.

At home, Na-jung waits anxiously until Yoon-jin arrives, needing more advice. They arrive at a new plan: Na-jung is to go to the hospital, do her five-second squat, and get her money. Then she is to keep Garbage from saying anything until Yoon-jin can page her away. Avoidance is totally a reasonable problem-solving tactic, right?

Dejected now, Garbage chain-smokes for a while outside the hospital, then drops in on Binggeure again. To his surprise, in hobbles Chilbongie on crutches, and he realizes that he’d jumped to the wrong conclusion.

So when he checks his messages and hears that Na-jung’s outside ready to collect her cash, he breaks into a wide smile and bolts before the message is even done.

He runs outside and sees Na-jung across the street, and she sinks into her squat. She’s scared to face his impending rejection, so even as he urges her to hop over to his side she stays at the halfway point, keeping her distance.

But then she rejects Yoon-jin’s advice entirely and just opens up her arms wide, a gesture for him to come to her. Garbage takes that cue and walks straight toward her… and plants a big kiss on her lips. Omo! Thank you, and finally!

Chilbongie is puzzled to find a package waiting for him at the hospital, delivered by one of his teammates, and opens the box to find a huge stash of socks. One look at the logos—Abibas, IVike—and he realizes who sent the knock-offs. His ensuing phone conversation with his teammate is much friendlier now, all that animosity now water under the bridge. Chilbongie even asks his buddy about his mentor, and gets back the response Yogi Berra.

That night, Mom gets a call with jaw-dropping news: Haitai has been called to army duty, and has to report tomorrow. Apparently some fool forgot to send over the draft notice sooner, but there’s no recourse and Haitai has to show up as ordered. Noooo. Ki-tae may have missed the final goodbye but at least he got to go through the whole process of preparing himself emotionally, whereas Haitai misses out on all that. Oof, my heart.

Na-jung stares at her new heart necklace and jumps to take a phone call from Oppa, while Dad watches Chilbongie on television giving an interview. Ha, he’s taken his teammate’s response and cites Yogi Berra as someone he looks up to, one quote in particular sticking with him: “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”

It pinches my heart to see how blissful Na-jung is in the foreground, trying to hide her giddiness over Oppa’s call while Chilbongie is off in the background, determined to hang in there.

Back to the 2002 wedding, with Kim Min-jong thrilling the crowd. Chilbongie’s narration resumes:

Chilbongie: “It is said that in order to achieve success in one field, ten thousand hours are required. The ten-thousand-hour rule. For Mozart and the Beatles and Steve Jobs and Kim Yuna, it wasn’t an innate genius or good luck that created their success, but the effort and pain of more than ten thousand hours of work. It could be that work, relationships, and love are like that. In order to achieve that accomplishment, you can’t wait for an innate something to show up or a stroke of luck—you have to work hard and try and suffer till the very end. It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”

It’s in 2013 that we learn that Dad sent Kim Min-jong presents of beef for eight years, all for the purpose of getting him to sing at his daughter’s wedding one day. Which has to be the sweetest thing ever, in a ridiculously roundabout way.

Yoon-jin gets an annoying text from her co-worker, who’s working late at the office and is now pestering her instead of doing a simple internet search. Haitai starts to reason with her that it’s understandable to ask, but Samcheonpo bursts out, “THAT BITCH!” Hahaha. That kills me. He’s learned!

He goes waaaaay over the top defending Yoon-jin and insists on giving that woman a piece of his mind—and the moment she picks up his call, he gets all meek and polite. LOL.

COMMENTS

Is it over for the Chilbongie ship? All you Chilbongie fans, I feel for your pain, and for the pain assuredly in your future because I’m sure the drama will be drawing out whatever ounce of hope you have left until the bitter end, rather than give you a clear answer now. It wouldn’t be the first time this show did that.

I had the feeling that ONCE the drama picked a direction and went with it, I would be fully onboard despite whatever feelings of conflict and lingering hope I felt for the other guy. That hope would have swung either way, because if it was gonna be Oppa, I would feel pangs for Chilbongie, and if it turned out to be Chilbongie, I’d hurt for Oppa. By and large my head is ready to go where the drama takes us with this romance, but surprisingly I’m not 100 percent with it anymore—I accept what the show is doing, but my heart has begun to disengage. I’m getting the nagging feeling that I overestimated the show, and now I’m feeling the resultant disappointment sinking in.

Overestimating Answer Me is not a thing I thought would happen, because despite some of its biggest flaws (the looooong scenes that don’t need to be, the indulgent tangents) I’ve always had faith in the heart and direction of the show, and trusted that the writer—who is so often intelligent and funny, and sometimes brilliant—would deliver what the show needed. But there’s a 2% lack here and it makes me sad, because I actually love the story of 1994 even more than 1997, but the execution is sort of getting in its way.

I absolutely love Oppa as a character and as a person, and so badly want to be emotionally behind this romance, but as we’ve mentioned previously the drama has committed some missteps. This isn’t an issue of one guy being better than the other, or one ship being more deserving, but purely a technical narrative miscalculation. I don’t hold Oppa’s indecision against him (too much) because I agree that his character logic makes sense, for instance. But the drama keeps doing this pendulum swing of making Chilbongie seem like the main loveline—by withholding Oppa from us—and now it makes Oppa the main loveline by shoving Chilbongie back.

At this point I feel jerked around for no reason (other than that we just CANNOT know who the husband is, because that is this drama’s game), and that makes either loveline slightly dissatisfying. I would rather go down with one flaming ship while the other rode off gloriously into the sunset, than for both possibilities to be marred by the fact that these producers can’t let go of the idea that they have to trick us about the endgame. I’m pretty sure from the meeeellions of dramas out there (okay, thousands) that knowing the main pairing from the first episode does not inherently inhibit our enjoyment of the story.

I really worried that Oppa was going to miss his chance this episode, because the issue of timing has been raised before and because he just kept biding his time. For what? It drove me nuts, these past episodes. I would be completely sympathetic about hesitating to make an initial confession of love, because hell that stuff is terrifying, but he’s accepting one. Why the draggy feet? Why schedule a D-day in the future after a rival showed up and declared his intentions to fight for her heart? You admitted that Chilbongie jolted you into realization, but then you just kept waiting some more! I feel like maybe this writer fixed certain key points in the future (like this kiss) and then stretched the story to pad out the stuff in between, instead of letting the current story flow into the future. Which is why the overall pacing feels off, as much as I love the character moments in between.

As a result, that made me resent Oppa for assuming he could wait until it was convenient for him, assuming that Na-jung would wait with unchanging feelings. Granted, she didn’t move on, but I consider that his good fortune, not a sure thing. I half-expected him to lose his shot to complacency, and that would have been tragic. And so every time he was feeling dejected about Na-jung and Chilbongie, I couldn’t feel sorry for him because it was all completely avoidable angst.

I would say that Chilbongie is still in the running technically, but I have no great expectation that he will suddenly surge to the fore as an equal contender. If Na-jung had shown more conflict over him, or felt stirrings of physical awareness the way she did with Oppa, I would be less certain. Think about it this way: Making Oppa the endgame hurts Chilbongie, for sure. But making Chilbongie the endgame feels out of step with the amount of dramatic structure and emotional buildup devoted to the Na-jung/Garbage relationship. If I am wrong, I will willingly eat my words. But if they do pull a Chilbongie switch even now, I think they’ve timed it all wrong—Na-jung would be spending 13 to 14 episodes completely in love with the other guy, with only 6 or 7 for him. (Caveat: In a lesser drama, this is feasible if flawed. I hold Answer Me to a higher standard.)

There have been countless dramas predicated on the idea of unrequited love being a genuine kind of love, so I can’t diminish Chilbongie’s feelings for not being returned. Thus his story may be sad, but it’s not pathetic. That said, I shook my head a little at his narration about ten thousand hours having relevance in love, even though it makes perfect sense for a character like him—hard work is his whole mantra, so why not try to apply that to other things? I feel terrible that he’s pinning his hopes on hard work and patience, even though those are traits I do love about him; it just means he’s in for some pain. It’s okay, Chilbongie, I’ll hold you.

With this drama yanking my emotions this way and that, I can at least find comfort in the fact that I am no longer either Team Garbage or Team Chilbongie—the ship has ceased to be the point for me. I’m Team Na-jung, and I just want whatever thing brings her to her 2013 state of happiness and comfort. After all, even when she knows it’s a better tactic to step back and be non-clingy, ultimately she flings her arms wide anyway, heart bared, whether to be bruised or to be accepted. How could I not love her for that?

Couldn't agree more, I love this drama as well.

Also, I love your write-ups JB, and this site in general. But, I really think you are being too harsh with this drama. The drama is not perfect, but it's by far one of the best this year, if not ever (or at least the last 10 years or so).

The husband game is meant to be a fun thing that lasts through out the episodes. Yes, it seems drawn out, but it's actually not that bad.

I totally agree about your whole comment; had to re-read some of JB's paragraphs feeling unsatisfied or jerked around with the pendulum of emotions for the sake of the writers keeping us guessing who NJ ends up with. It feels a little like knit-picking on an ace drama.

That's the WHOLE premise of the drama, so we shouldn't be surprised that they pull all sorts of tricks to sustain the suspense until the end. It could have been much tighter by cropping the time to an hour or less per episode, but I don't mind the length so much because we are getting a lot more character development and interaction in this ideal boarding house/home. Heck, no wonder there's a long waiting list for a room!

But I do agree with JB that rather than being Team CB or Team Trash Oppa, I am totally Team NJ, and would root whomever she chooses. Because whomever she ends up with does not break the great bond of friendship that they still sustain all these years into the present time.

OMG, you are so right on your last statement! Despite sailing on CB's ship, I have to remind myself that, overall, Na Jung has the right to pick whoever she chooses, and that everybody is happy in the future. :D

It's not nitpicking, it's this drama's biggest flaw.

20 or 21 episodes are too long for this, and to serve that, writer has not only a lot of filler scenes, but also prolonged important character/plot developments. At this point, I've resigned myself to the meandering dialogues and filler scenes. But I can't appreciate the writer jerking me around on something as fundamental as the main romance especially in drama that can be categorized as a Romantic Comedy.

Same here. I agree with JB's comment. The last two eps derailed for me. I'm loosing interest in who will be the husband, the writer drags out some scenes so much, that I'm tempted to ff them (the beef restaurant scene, the talk of the three baseballers after hurting CB). One starts to see and feel the effect, that they still have to fill 8 long eps. In addition Trash Oppa somehow rubbed me the wrong way in ep 12. Some scenes made me almost dislike him. And I used to be firmly on Trash Oppa's ship. CB on the other hand suddenly seemed to have lost interest in Na-jung. I didn't feel his love anymore, even in the library scene. I'm puzzled. Hopefully, they'll be able to fix it soon, as I started to like Reply 1994 more than the 1997 version.

(I wouldn't be surprised if they played the absence makes the heart grow fonder card for Haitai and Na-jung.)

I've actively started disliking oppa after watching this week's episodes. His wishy washy attitude towards NJ and his cold treatment towards CB are alarming to me. In the first couple of weeks he could do no wrong but now his aegyo makes me roll my eyes.

As for CB: his subtle ways to spend time with NJ have been nipped in the bud by her. When he asked her out for lunch and to watch some drama she right away declined. She MAY be aware of him when she even shies away from skin ship. When she's about to leave the library and he touches her... She just waved him away. Despite some viewers who think he's clingy and what not... CB's always been respectful of the boundaries set by NJ.

I have a feeling that the husband is neither CB or Garbage. Haitai is going to grow up in the army and return in a new strong light. He may be the dark horse in the background who shoots to the front without anyone noticing since he was never a contender. We now know that he has feelings for her. She will probably fall for him while exchanging letters with him in the army.

I am still totally gaga over CB. I love him as an actor and his range is awesome. I didn't even recognize him in Werewolf Boy because he played the villain spectacularly.

Garbage has shown some imperfections that are throwing me for a loop. For almost all the episodes he was the perfect character - empathetic, sincere, noble. Then he became a little weird after CB's confession. For some reason, as much as I was hoping for the kiss, when it happened it didn't feel right. I cannot figure out why. Maybe I still see him as my beloved Bread Man.

I think it's mainly because Reply 1994 is supposed to be a 21-ep drama series so you'd expect all aspects/stories of the more-than-21-hour-drama to have relevance to its supposed main premise i.e. Najung's love story. This is not the best drama ever but I actually do enjoy every single episode for the little side stories relating to their respective theme. No, I don't think the Kim Min Jong stories bear any weight to the drama as a whole (besides him re-appearing as the wedding singer) but I still appreciate all the funny little details of the long-drawn scene at the restaurant. Something that other dramas definitely cannot do.

but i'm team chil bong!!!

i watched the drama not having any expectations but i like the character and i support him in his experiencing first love. to be honest, he loves na jung and that's the only reason why i want them to be the together in the end.

of course, not that i don't like the other characters. i do, possibly in equal measure. i just like chil bong the best.

episode 1-11, being with him while he falls in love and experiences heart break was fine. that was his story arc.

but now, i worry that he won't develop as a character, and will be used as a device to keep the love triangle going and the who-is-the-husband mystery going.

i get that he is persistent and hardworking. i get that he may apply these traits to love because that worked for him in the past and he is inexperienced in love.

but more than that, no matter how little screen time he had, i can see that he is a decent person. he may be heartbroken, but he will be happy for her, for them.

although he tried to spend time with na jung, only as a friend, and in harmless ways.

he is polite and he knows his boundaries. when he finds out na jung and trash oppa are dating, he will refrain from doing so, because he knows it may make them uncomfortable.

the only way i can see him do so while still loving na jung is if he doesn't know. and even if trash oppa and na jung dates secretly, i think chil bong will eventually know as he is an observant person (that's how he found out that na jung likes trash oppa and why he confirmed that trash oppa likes her back)

so if there's a disconnect with a character and the drama's trajectory, that means he may get a personality change. that's the only way to explain him going after na jung even if she's dating someone else.

and that's not how i want him to go. because he should be more than that.

I almost cried when I saw Haitai's facial expression outside the training camp. Out of a full house full of boys why was it my favorite who got sent to the army?! The show better have a good way of still showing him in the episodes or I will have words.

Also Binggeure's mini freak out under the blanket was so cute! Props to the show for letting us see Baro's tummy :)

Haitai's real name was mentioned in this episode... I thought. He's out of the running. But I kinda want CB with the baseball assistant coach he keeps putting down as being a Seoul girl.

Haitai is sure to find a girl on his own.

Really? What's Haitai's name o.o? I really don't want CB with the baseball assistant coach. It's like the writers are saying: here's your consolation prize CB~

To give you an example (if you're an oppa shipper), lets say the writers made CB-NJ endgame and ended up pairing oppa with the med school girl. How would you feel?

I like Misoo but I don't want her as CB's wife ):

0

Yes! So glad to know I'm not the only one that thought that. I would like them to introduce the girl early for whoever doesn't get NJ. Then she won't seem like just a consolation prize. What i like about the manager girl is that she seems to be blind to Chilbongie's awesomeness. He'd have to work for her, and he seemd to enjoy a challenge.

0

Oppa won't end up with the med school girl. She's going to end up with the medical student she's bickering with because they pretty much said so in the "fortune teller" bit. Said her husband would be rich. And he said his family owns a hospital. The bickering also reflected a lot of what happened with our second couple. They played it as a "kinda funny" moment story-wise. Personally, I thought it was unwise to pair her so fast because it dropped the story tension a bit, but the fact they cleared her pretty much told me she's end game with the other med student.

This leaves Oppa wide open because there are no rivals. But CB is not because he has the assistant manager, who seems to be lightly interested in him, but not quite on her radar yet. (They pulled something similar last time).

They are setting up that pairing already and put some light story indications.

Although, I do have to say, I kinda have a second wish for her to be with Haitai if CB doesn't pan out since Haitai made comments about her, but then I might have watched too many Korean dramas with love triangles. And Haitai never showed up with her again, which makes her most likely end game with CB.

I hope they don't pull the same thing as last time and actually show BG with a real live boyfriend within a relationship (Instead of heavily indicated), but I know I'm asking for a lot.

I also suspect it's these pairings because of the date of their marriage. Medical school calculations and so on.

I know this is kind of cold and calculating, but it's the type of thing I do when I hash out a plot and then figure out the emotionality later. You can't plot solely on emotion, otherwise the tension falls out (as I illustrated with the med student flat love line.)

0

You're way overthinking what I said, Kim Yoonmi. I was just giving you an example of how us CB shippers feel about Misoo and explaining why we didn't want her to end up with CB. I never said the med school girl would end with oppa. I said "let's say" as in imagine if the writers did that.

0

that med school student will not marry oppa, yes, but she will also not marry the other med school student.

that character is a cameo role, she is the doctor in am1997, she married yoon jae's older brother in that drama.

0

The med school girl in AM 1994 is NOT the same girl who played Tae Woong's wife in AM 1997. They are different people LOL. Again, I meant for you guys to imagine it. I didn't say the writers will do that. If you can't even imagine that, then I don't know how to describe why we don't want CB and MS to become a couple. I give up explaining -.-

0

Ok imagine if the writers make CB-NJ endgame and paired oppa with his first love (joo kyung)

0

Really? Lol hahaha why didn't I recognize her lol

0

Dont quit your ship
1997 had 16 episode and things turned around in episode 12.
1994 will have 21 episode so i expect things turn around in episode 16 or 17.
If Cb is endgame, by the time oppa propose Na Jung may see her real feelings. And CB will need to suffer a lot in the next 2-4 episode for that to happen.

The only reason I'm not going to ship them anymore is because I don't want to get hurt. I will always want CB to find happiness and will secretly root for him any chance I get. It's just now I will just accept what NJ wants. I was always team NJ just as I was team CB. That is why I'm willing to accept oppa as the husband since the beginning, if that's what makes NJ happy. Though I still believe CB should be the one..

Can I just say that I LOVE the parents. They give so much heart and comedy gold to this drama. And who knew SCP could sing so well. I am loving him more and more!

Yeah for some movement on oppa! That kiss what a doozy! Even though I am a CB shipper I can see that oppa and NJ really like each other. They way she giggles and they way he moons over her. Too much cuteness. My only complaint is that it should have happened earlier. But beggars can't be choosers. I still have hope for CB cuz 1. Dad was looking at CB while he told mom to get extra special meet for KMJ. And then 2. When they were panning over the guys watching the wedding video everyone was super happy except oppa. He looked really upset, the way he looked when NJ told him that she was going to help CB with his school work. I could only hope.

I think oppa's less-than-pleased reaction in the 2013 scene of this episode was another of the writers' way of yanking us around. He needs to have a better presence in the 2013 scenes if he is the husband after all. Although for the life of me, I can't think of any reason why he would visibly react that way, since I interpreted Na Jeong's reaction as being that of a satisfied fan.

Before this episode, oppa has shrank in the background of the 2013 scenes (he was always all over Binggrae in the couch) and it was Chilbong who mostly appeared as 'separate' from the group (getting up to sleep in the bedroom, having coffee with Na Jung, 'successfully' urging Na Jung to take the soju-ginseng Dad set aside for his team's next win).

I think the 2013 scenes are just to mess with our brains. There is no way they are going to show a kiss like that and not have this couple be the end-game. Kdramas just don't do that.

Usually the give away is counting the amount of cameras and the amount of times they most likely had to refilm it. I was counting. Oppa won on that count. Game over.

Plus Oppa's popularity in South Korea probably will kill it. He is end game and was chosen from the beginning. ^^;; The Episode Zero pretty much told me.

There was a sweep around shot. That's one camera. 2 close ups. 2 more cameras. and one far away shot. 5 cameras. CB had far less cameras on his kiss.

I understand your lack of enthusiasm. This kiss was telegraphed about 6 episodes ago. That's over 6 hours to wait, meanwhile being teased with interim kisses, a wishy-washy hero keeping things to himself and blowing hot and cold, all sorts of annoying hints about who is the endgame (please...as if) and a heroine who is just an eager little puppy, waiting her turn.

Sorry, I am just annoyed with oppa lately. I could slap him for his high-handed ways, but then I remember he is a med student and he is portraying the grueling hours, the endless study, and the massive ego very, very well.

And I don't know if that's a good thing, but we still have ways to go here.

I agree with the 'who is the husband' pretty much destroying any love I had for either of the love lines. It was tedious when there were 16 half length episodes and now with 21 full length (plus a bit) ones, I really don't care anymore, and that's a big indication of bad story telling.

One of the things that I miss in Answer me 1994 that was present in Answer me 1997 is the presence of mini-mysteries. For example: in Answer me 1997 the big "who is the husband?" was followed by "who is pregnant?" and "who's engaged?" and another clues that got us wondering through the episodes besides the main mystery. Without that, I don't like the guessing anymore and just want the writers to show me the damn husband already. I just don't care who is it anymore, I'm done speculating; NJ will be happy and that's all.

About covering from appendix surgery.

Hm, I disagree with this JB. He wasn't jealous at NJ attention towards others - he even asked if NJ didn't want to go to hospital with him visit BG, he was jealous just towards CB - the young, handsome guy that provoked oppa saying he likes NJ and is not giving up, that he might steal NJ from Oppa. I think it is normal to feel jealous of CB, he isn't a friend, he is a strong love rival.

Btw, about last episode, I did not see much going on between Oppa and his first love. He was just being polite in front of their friends.

Didn't the guys say you can never bring/talk about a man first love?

As for why Trash let the ex sit there, everyone on the table knew and was friends with her, so they invited her to sit there, NJ isn't that close, so they asked her to sit with her friends. Trash didn't want to spoil the mood, if he asked her to not sit there would be rude and spoil the mood. So he was polite with his ex.

You can see they even asked him to give her a lift and oppa seems to agree with it, but when she enters his car, he tells her he is going to leave her in the next subway station LOL, cleary he was not giving any hope and cut her off.

What I think we are going to see are misunderstandings between Trash and NJ. And they are going to break up.

Imo, right now, both are on different stages of life. The timing is not right.

Trash, had his first love, has a lot of experience about relationships and love, is almost graduating. I think he isn't good at being in a relationship - he tends to keeps his feelings inside and doesn't share them - this ends up causing misunderstandings.

NJ is experiencing her first love and first relationship - just started college and is young. She is in a different stage of life than Trash. Imo, they will date, break up and later date again and marry.

I think NJ will start to have feelings for CB and will get confused. Trash will see NJ struggling and decide is better to give her a time or break up with her, to let her make her choices without pressure and let her experience new things, maybe NJ goes back to Trash, maybe not. Maybe she'll misunderstand Trash and his feelings. Will think he doesn't like her anymore... and Trash will go to army and they will meet years later.

I think that Trash had already went to the Army. If I remember right, he is 5 years older than Najung, but he is only in 3rd year of medical school. I don't really remeber the age thing XD

Required fields are marked *

FYI
Korean medical school lasts for 6 yrs, the first 2 yrs consisting of classes similar to pre-med. These initial 2 yrs are called 'Euiyaegwa' in Korean, and afterwards one goes on to 'real' med school lasting 4 more yrs. This part of medical education is called 'Bongwa' and is counted as 'Bongwa il haknyen, yi haknyen, sam haknyen, and sa haknyen (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year of med school).'

So 3rd yr of med school for Trash is about right, which means that Trash has not been to the Army yet.

Also, typically med school students enlist after graduation(after they've completed their 6 yrs of med school), and prefer to enlist as a "Doctor" which means a longer enlistment, but they get to enlist as a 'Janggyoo(Officer)' meaning better treatment, certain privilages, etc.

Oppa getting jealous as they showed with the cigarettes was a great moment. No real dialogue, but they really did show him being really frustrated that NJ probably went over CB, but I like the fact he didn't "mark" his territory, etc with CB and trusted NJ to choose.

Again, all subtleties with Oppa, but pretty easy to read through his exact actions.

Also the whole, I don't want to hug you bit was good too.

Thanks for the recap!!
I loved this episode for all the Oppa reasons and cried for all the CBie ones. He's out now, and that sucks. It makes the coffee conversation with NJ in 2013 more ominous when he said he was naive back then and all he thought about was baseball. Unless Oppa does something really really stupid -and we haven't seen a big enough flaw in him yet that could make that believable - I don't see why she would drop him for CBie. I can't see him cheating, even accidentally.

SHE would have to get bored with him, or realize her crush was based on a flawed perception of him. But she has seen him with eyes wide open from the git-go, so that's not gonna happen. Without CBie as a real contender, I hope show focuses on him liking someone else.

OMG!
I screamed when THE Kim Min Jong came out of the doors.
I guessed we would see him in the series eventually but what a great great extended cameo. The whole Feelings love for him came pouring out once again.

I guess it would be like LSG showing up at a wedding nowadays.

Regarding the thing about Oppa still being slow as molasses in confessing after telling Chilbonggie and the audience his true feelings, I'd have to say that the writer also made CB not do anything special afterwards and remain silently-in-love. So to me, it's like you said, Javabeans, that the writer was just filling up time to make the characters reach a certain point at a particular time.

because it seems forced because he did not like her?

if say, trash oppa has a girl classmate (assuming the girl that guested a few episodes back), and if he did not get na jung (which will be clear in like last 2-3 episodes because the mystery must prevail) and the drama suddenly had this whirlwind courtship with said girl classmate, it's too 'here's the consolation price because you're the other party'.

most of it is brought about by the late main pairing reveal and just keeping the hopes up, and then shallow developed side story so everyone is all dandy.

I like the baseball girl as well. I don't see anything wrong with her character. Maybe because I'm on Team Oppa? As much as I like Chilbong, I want Oppa and NJ as the end game, and so I don't have anything against the baseball girl. But I can see how others who are on team Chilbong dislike her. Introducing her to the series *almost* ensures that she'll be the consolation prize for Chilbong. She's pretty much like Najung, but she's *not* Najung. I'm sure if there's another girl who is close to Oppa, I'd feel the same dislike towards that girl.. lol.

I definitely prefer 1994 over 1997 especially the characters. Honestly after Yoon Jae's confession to Shin Won in 1997 the series started to drag. There was never a doubt in my mind who Shin Won's husband was going to be. It was just a matter of how they got there. No matter what happened in the series every thing always went back to Shin Won and YJ's relationship.

For the viewer's sake, I really hope the writers won't force us the viewers to wait until the last episode to reveal the husband. The show has become about "who Jung's husband" is rather than about a group of borders from the country who goes to Seoul for college. It shouldn't be about playing games with the audience but rather showing the journey of how they got there.

yes. it's getting tedious and frustrating.

i'll still watch, maybe fast-forward to interesting parts but definitely not liking the development.

after this one, with the two people who love each other are dating and kissing, i hate that they still drag along the other guy with "it ain't over til it's over".

hard work and persistence works in life and relationships (making relationships work) but not in love as make someone love you.

i don't know what they are implying and where they want to go. but it's such a disservice to another character who should stand on his own or be relevant to not have a purpose other than to make the love triangle work. i mean even his baseball was used to show the love to na jung and love triangle; missing baseball practice to spend time with na jung, giving the ball or the heart to na jung, disregarding being in his best condition to the meeting with a recruiter so he can be with the love of his life and to confess.

he works hard and that's endearing but he doesn't have her heart and once the other two are dating and what not, that's end game. i don't know why he has to be there with the 'it aint over til its over' except for the purpose of keeping the whos-the-husband game going until the last episode.

will hard work make na jung love him back? how come it didn't work when na jung and trash oppa weren't dating and kissing yet then?

I agree with you. I want Chilbong to have a life of his own...to feel like a truly complex person, to feel like he has an entire existence beyond what is shown on this drama. I do not like it in dramas when the other male has to be in denial. I wonder if you have a point when you suggest that his persistence is meant to keep the guessing game going. Chilbong is so sweet and I think that his character deserves something better than to become the other guy who can't take a hint. But let's see where things go.

Required fields are marked *

i don't know if it is related to persistence or hard work, but the drama will make chil bong hang on until the last possible minute, maybe last 2-3 episodes.

otherwise there is no mystery about who is the husband, i mean no one has to make guesses anymore. and that is the drama's gimmick.

i don't know how they will do it though, especially in context. chil bong seems to be a decent person. unless he will have a personality transplant, he will give up when na jung and trash are dating and seem happy (which they are here, and which he will find out in the next episode).

Required fields are marked *

I'm actually glad they had catcher wife as an explainer to Chilbong's motivations on his life, I love that aspect of the show (along with the other many, many adorable bromances) And yes, I would totally hate it if the writers limited him to a plot device so that Oppa can get the girl in the end, so I really hope we get more out of him in the next few episodes. JB said it best - this would work pretty well on other dramas but AM series is so much more than that. Meaning if Chilbongie does not get Na-Jung in the end, his character deserves to be much more than a crutch.

Although I think I'm the minority thinking that Chilbong is actually the husband after this episode, when I was truly leaning more towards Oppa before. Because to me the kiss, as special as it was to the Oppa Na-Jung romance, they come back with Chilbong with his 10,000 hours narrative and Yogi Berra then cutting into the wedding scene after that. Or maybe I just bought into the red herring, hook line and sinker which was the writers' intended effect =p

8 more episodes more to go, this drama is seriously giving me whiplash and I love/hate it!

I would be the minority also, if that's the case. I just think CB is the endgame, simply because that conversation NJ & CB had in 2013 about her swearing habit. He talked to her like a husband & she answered like a wife.

Break-up happens. Familiarity is not necessarily the best thing when you become a couple. There is a long way to go from 1995 to 2002. Right now, let's enjoy NJ & Trash moments and please writers, can you not show too many of CB heartbreak scenes because as it is, I'm already feeling his sadness.

I loved Chilbong's wife. Well, the other one. ;) It was nice to see Chilbong from the perspective who doesn't just see his success but all the effort he put into getting there, especially since, as we've also learned, he's not the type to brag or put down others. We also got to know more about his dad, who apparently is really rich if he can afford to treat the team and now I'm really intrigued about their estranged relationship. He seems to support Chilbong's passion but just isn't "there". I wonder when they'll reveal who his parents are since they've revealed Trash's and Hai Tai's. And Binggrae's mom.

Team Minority! I'm actually becoming more and more sure (like 95%) that Chilbong is endgame. And it's still 7 years til the wedding. A LOT can happen so I'm surprised that people are already ruling CB out this early in the game. Like Appa said, life doesn't start until the bottom of the 9th inning, with 2 outs to go! (or something like that)

Hmm...maybe we are concentrating on the wrong words of CB's voice over. He also said suffering, perhaps love is like that, sometimes you suffer for a long time and then Love is realized. How many kdramas do we know that the lovers suffer so so much before ending up together or not end up due to someone dying but the great great love is there???

"At this point I feel jerked around for no reason (other than that we just CANNOT know who the husband is, because that is this drama’s game), and that makes either loveline slightly dissatisfying. I would rather go down with one flaming ship while the other rode off gloriously into the sunset, than for both possibilities to be marred by the fact that these producers can’t let go of the idea that they have to trick us about the endgame. I’m pretty sure from the meeeellions of dramas out there (okay, thousands) that knowing the main pairing from the first episode does not inherently inhibit our enjoyment of the story."

THIS. THIS. THIS. Javabeans you have hit the nail on the head. Jerking us around has made people angry at each other when we should just be appreciating the story telling.

Again, I am going to complain about one littttttle thing: WHERE IS THE BASKETBALL??

Required fields are marked *

Also THIS:
"I would say that Chilbongie is still in the running technically, but I have no great expectation that he will suddenly surge to the fore as an equal contender. But if they do pull a Chilbongie switch even now, I think they’ve timed it all wrong—Na-jung would be spending 13 to 14 episodes completely in love with the other guy, with only 6 or 7 for him."

I wholeheartedly agree. Story wise, it will frustrate the heck out of me if Chilbong is endgame BECAUSE they made Na Jung-Oppa such a big deal in the first 2/3 of the drama. I would be happy with Chilbong being the husband IF the drama had showed that Na Jung showed anything romantic toward Chilbong WHILE she still pined for Oppa.

As much as I obsessed about this drama and I will continue to watch I must say it's frustrating that people are fighting over the husband. 1997 wasn't like this at all. And I feel like the writer/director have gotten too wrapped up in the love lines to focus enough on everything else. BASKETBALL. And again, BASKETBALL. And other story lines lol.

Um. It was premised on basketball because that was what was super popular in 1994. In 1997 it was about H.O.T. and kpop becoming extremely popular. This was supposed to be about basketball. That's why in the first 1-2 episodes she was chasing after the Yonsei basketball team and trying to get pics of Lee Sang Min.

That was a refreshing surprise to me, as a baseball fan. I'm loving all the baseball metaphors! But I did notice that the Lee Sang Min/basketball posters have been coming down the past few episodes, or is it just me? Maybe it is part of Na-jung's character growth. In 1997 Shi-won's identity is always going to be tied with being a HOT fangirl and this time around that is not obviously the case.

Let's remember the timeline:
1995 - Garbage and Na Jeong start dating
2002 - she is married to mysterious hubby
2013 - all the youngsters involved are watching the wedding video.

A potential sevenyears-wait before getting married and no mention of any kids 11 years after the wedding? Now that does leave much room for plenty of events. If I were the writer, with the ongoing fan wars, I'd pick Haitai as end game. Haha Cuz yes, he and Na Jeong have always gotten along, especially since ep6, in spite of his womanizing ways. He needs some growing up indeed which his draft may help him with, but eventually why not?

Whoops, I must have missed that part of the couple having 3 kids. :-/

However I clearly remember Haitai's reaction when Garbage eventually answered that Na Jeong's crush wasn't unrequited. Thus I tend to think that he has wisely decided to keep his under wraps and move on, since he did not have a chance. I find that much more respectful also than comparing love to a conquering battle for which one fights 'til the end. I'm all for underdog lovelines. haha

High five! I guess you and I must probably be the only members among Team Haitai! LOL

Seriously I'm not aboard any ship actually. I care about Garbage a lot just because of who he is but his slow moves may backfire on him down the line. I do care about CB because he is honest, straight-forward and caring, but in a partnership such as a wedding the spouses need to be able to talk about anything. Na Jeong is obviously very smart, much more than him, as she has called him "stupid" in the study room. I tend to think that their relationship would thus be unbalanced and "boring".

0

Me too, me too. I don't care anymore, if CB or Oppa will win the race. But I love Haitai and I would soooo love it, if the show would start to bring him up for the race (which will not happen with him being off for army duty) and open her eyes for him. He clearly likes her and she likes him - sadly, only as a friend. They have a lot in common to begin with. However, this ship is very, very unlikely.

0

it was so shocking when Haitai suddenly had to go to the army, I felt like my ship had just exploded! "noooooo, how can he get together with NJ if he's gone for three years???"

0

Hurrah for the world's best Appa!!! He sends Kim Min-jong beef for 7 years to forsee him singing at hus daughter's wedding. The restaurant scene with and Kim Min-jong was one of the most realistically and hilariously written celebrity encounters ever. The co incidences in this scene just were awesome but it was just so believable and funny.
The whole back story for how they got Kim Min-jong to sing in Na Jung's wedding reminded me just how enjoyable the drama is when it is not all about who is the husband. When all the fangirling and shipping goes to an extreme it ultimately destroy's the true essence of the show. We just constantly are expecting something to happen only between certain characters which ultimately makes us less interested in the plot as a whole. I do think this is a compromise that is made by the AM series for the ratings game but i wish they dint do it.

Binggeure likes oppa. Definitely not in a platonic way. I feel like this could go either way. I dont know if this means he is gay. It can be just compete and utter adoration of someone that you just cant help but fall for irrespective of the gender(most of us would have experienced this same sex crush some point in our lives). Or maybe he is gay and he is the one who picks up Hoya(who i am still not sure is gay) in 2012.

Na Jung is one lucky girl she has an awesome Appa, lovable oppa and a cute cute follower. Besides these of course she has friends who adore her. She totally deserves it though her whole attitude of being thoughtful of everyone's concern was really really endearing. "Ultimately she flings her arms wide anyway, heart bared, whether to be bruised or to be accepted. How could I not love her for that?" I do find it endearing. That is kind of why i like CB too his whole i will not give up to the end attitude is kinda cool though I just cant hold him to Oppa's standard yet however hard i try . I keep telling myself that i have to stop expecting a certain endgame as i said before it ruins the total enjoyment of the show but man that kiss was good. Which had me fawning all over Oppa once again.

YJ and SCP continue to be perfect and adorable. Making me wish again that they would just reveal the husband already so we can stop this incessant obsession.

Thanks for the recap been refreshing for the past hour for it. Beautifully written..

The thing is am neither is his fan girl nor do i find i care if he is infact gay in real life. I was actually refereeing to Joon-hee the character. I just thought Joon-Hee likes Yoon-jae without dwelling too much into the gay straight thing. That is also what the writer intended as he said in an interview. I think it is silly to label people based one single crushes. Again am not saying being gay is bad or different. It is just no better than being straight.

Chilbongie's wife (catcher) is such a good friend. Why does AM1994 always have such awesome characters? You don't get villains, per se, more of just flawed characters. That's what i'll always appreciate about the AM series.

Before this episode, I was always casually watching and thinking: it's fine for me whether NJ ends up with Trash or CB for me. But after this one, I realize that I'm completely on CB's side. I couldn't enjoy watching the hug & kiss scenes between Trash-NJ 'cause my heart aches for CB so much and at that moment, I just wish he didn't see scene. To me, I can't help rooting for the boy who earnestly steps up, confesses his love and fights for it (even when it seems like he's on the losing side since the beginning). Whatever's gonna happen next, whoever's gonna be NJ's husband, now I care less about that. I just want my CB to be happy.

One thing I appreciate about this drama are the characters. CB has had quite minimal screen time. I HOPE the writer develops his character further. And, yes he should let go of NJ. From the previews the plot seems to be going in this direction.

I must have a (self-inflicted) sadistic streak in me in that I keep watching this MV & sobbing, esp. when I think that CB loses both baseball n NJ which are the highlights of the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lpizQhTOeU

The major thing that gets to me is that we've yet to see NJ's thoughts on the New Year's confession and the hug. I feel both CB and we are shafted in the process. Am sure they'll explain it later on but gahhhhhh there's no pay-off as we get hyped up only the fizzle is akin to a whiplash.

I wouldn't mind NJ-GB being endgame if Hyorin guests and both she n CB can be all hot together (they were great in her MV).^^

Yeah, I hope they do explain that and not leave us hanging.

But I still feel that there's a big twist that has yet to happen to change the end game. With how these writers like to keep us guessing until the very last moment, it's kinda early for NaJung and Oppa to be in that romantic relationship. I'm not saying that they shouldn't be because in real life, those kinds of things happen. But in the Answer Me universe, the reveal at episode 13 is kinda early. Unless they're changing their formula of jerking us around until the very end.

And LOL on Hyorin's guesting. I did see the video you're talking about and YYS was swoon-worthy there. *drools* ^-^

I agree with a.
It's just the matter of feelings. To me, what NJ does is true to her heart. She didn't do anything wrong, like lead CB on or let him be on the hook. I was once in NJ's shoes when I was (also) around 20. Thus I know how hard it is for NJ to reject CB but not hurt him (my answer: there's no such way). In my situation, we didn't talk for a few years after that (because I didn't know how to do both, stay friend and not hurt my friend or lead him to believe that I would reciprocate his feelings one day).

I actually think they're setting Chilbogie up to be the husband. Yeah, the structural disparity in how much time she gets to spend "in love" with him would be completely off in comparison to the time and attention the Oppa/Najung relationship got, but Oppa seems too easy a pick at this point. Since the writers are having a hoot of a time having us guessing, they are probably going to pull a late switcheroo. Moreover, most of the clues seem to be pointing towards Chilbong. Today was a big episode for Oppa and Najung, but I felt like the shadow of the 10,000 hour rule hung heavy over them. It's like the writers are saying persistence and hard work is going to win you the love of your life, which though sweet and idealistic in theory is not at all how real life works. I adore Chilbongie but I'm Team Oppa all the way. I really, really loved all the scenes where Oppa and Najung got to act like two fools in love in the past two episodes, but it's reached a point where I cannot even fully enjoy their cute scenes without this bleak sense of doom constantly interrupting my revelry. So yeah, in that sense, I really think the writers are starting to lose at their own game. Just reveal the damn husband already, so I can rejoice if it's Oppa or start piecing my heart back together if it's not. I'm sure a lot of Chilbongie supporters feel the same way.

I think they're saying that CB has to spend more time with NJ to have a chance with her, and that time and effort are what will (maybe) allow him to succeed. Trash oppa clearly has the advantage on time right now, but the 10,000 hour theme that went through this episode doesn't seem very significant when applied to Trash/NJ.

I remember them doing something similar in AM1997 where one of the episode titles was along the lines of "first loves never come true" to make the point that SW and YJ were more than first loves.

Unfortunately, for the last few episodes the race for Na-jung's hand lost its appeal. And I can't help, - and I tried my hardest- but I don't like AM 1994 as much as I loooooooove AM 1997.
It's funny, because I liked the characters here more and I don't think that the story in AM 1997 is better. But I was much more touched and emotionally invested in AM 1997 and its characters (heartbreaking scenes like: the ripped rain jacket, or the truth chair in the stairwell, or the Hyung-is-sorry- text message combined with Uncle’s story of the cake incident, or Yoon-jae's confession or his running to rescue Shi-won, or Joon-hee pressing the play button or his first-love-farewell-backhugging, Yoo-jung cutting her hair solidarity... and many, many more).

As much as I love oppa and his awesome character, I still think chilbong is a better match for NJ. and I was a little upset for my chilbong ship in this last episode, but I still enjoyed the oppa/nj cuteness. Though, what I am trying to get at is there are alot of other things to this drama that are very precious, especially all the people of the boarding house and their relationships and friendships.

Pine over your ship, but don't get too involved that you get no enjoyment out of watching the drama as a whole. :)

The writer makes some strange decisions.

First they like to cut off scenes right after a big event happened. Like the kisses, the confessions. And then next thing you know it is 3 months later and nnothing big changed with how the characters interact. Although not every scene shoukd have immediate follow through but some need to. Right after a confession, something usually went awkward, why not show us that and how they managed to overcome it?

Then the big haitai disappearance. Instead of having a full episode of him in the army with people we don't know or care, why cant they show the boarders reaction to him being suddenly off?

I think something lacks focus here and stories are being mixed in to fit a timeline the writer is fixated to.

I ddidn't mind who's the husband game but now I am starting to. Becauseit felt like CB was a big contender at first and then he was just a crutch.

I think they'll probably pour on the aftermath of a lot of those scenes near the end when they do the big reveal of her husband. I remember them doing something similar with AM1997 (in the last episode of course >.<). The fallout from CB's confession could swing both ways at this point, which may be why they're withholding it. I can't tell if NJ flat out rejected him or not, because he still seems quite happy to bounce along and crush on her.

As for HT, it looks like they'll have amusing scenes with him in the army in the next episode and the boarders' reactions with him gone.

I agree; we're missing chunks of story, which I don't think are sloppy writing. They will be unveiled when the big reveal occurs (or leading up to it). The kiss with CB, and the huge crying scene when she realized he was ok after the dept. store collapse are too major to be swept under the rug.

I started as Team Oppa (Jung Woo biased from his last drama), but CB won me over with his earnest affection. The 6 hr. bus ride to see her, washing dishes with her, and rescuing her when she's in a bind cemented the deal. Not to mention the confession and kiss; plus he treats her like a girl. I'm curious about his study buddy tactic--coming across as a bum when it comes to studying, yet didn't someone say he was a genius? He really doesn't impose himself on her, but is content to spend any time with her (cucumbers, even).

Oppa, on the other hand, keeps treating her like a lil sis -- and though they are comfortable with each other, I think NJ will realize it. She gets irritated when he stretches her cheeks, and brings up personal topics. He did score points by going to the musical, tho. Could it be that NJ is obsessed with Oppa rather than in love with him? She chased him for so long and just got used to to it. Plus I think his first love may reappear. Even though he made her catch the subway, actually seeing her character may be foreshadowing.

Obviously I'm pretty CB biased, but just didn't feel the kiss with Oppa. It was passionate and about time, and the preview shows them together, but I feel more twists and turns are in store for NJ. The Yogi Berra quote was a huge teaser . . . and a thread of hope for CB shippers!

Your take makes alot of sense. Frankly, even if alot of people feel chilbongie has no hope, I still think there still alot of time left for his and NJ to be explored more, thus he is still very much in the running. I did like the oppa/nj scenes and kiss was cute, too. but, I completely agree with the part that he treats her like a little kid and I think after watching episode 13, she seems to get a little annoyed at that. Also the expression of that affection/satisfaction when she is with oppa has calmed down a bit. Maybe, it was because she feels more confident in her own shoes, but it could also be that she is sort of growing out of her love for him subconsciously. I say subconsciously because clearly consciously she still very much likes him, but there are bits where I sometimes feel that she is letting go a little. Though, these are just my speculations, I could be very much wrong.

All I feel is that people shouldn't dwell on the number of episodes oppa has vs. number of episodes chilbong might have with her. If this leap is coming then we can also see NJ sort of becoming dissatisfied with her relationship with oppa, sometimes love fades out and sometimes affection can form even in the most surprising ways, so I don't think people should undermine chilbongie or his efforts just yet.

hmmm i think sometimes the translation can get really misconstrued... the dialect that they speak in this drama is known to be very rough (swear alot, say things very straight forward). its kinda hard to explain but basically it can sound mean when translated directly, when in reality it sounds pretty normal. i hope that makes sense lol cuz it def wasnt meant to sound mean . thats just the way they talk

So, because the show is making Oppa-yah more and more the endgame, suddenly the drama is ''dragging'' getting ''boring'' because your couple is not coming true?

Funny because A1997 I don't remember much people complaining that it dragged. Why? Because there the endgame was 100 sure and everyone shipped YJ and SW.
But here you are not getting the couple you want = boring, still stop until I know the end.

It is clear the bias here.

But if CB ends up being the husband, this drama will be the best drama ever, right?

Oh please -__-

I think people are just angry at the aspect of the writer dragging the Who's the husband? storyline -- not so much because the favor has shifted to trash.
I revel in the trash-najung moments, but i have to agree with the majority that the mystery is really holding the show back from being truly great. I personally think this writer needs to nip it in the bud and just reveal the husband, mystery be damned. At this point i really do feel the writer is toying with us, and for many, it takes away from the fun.

Also, from the recaps of AM1997 you could see people getting frustrated towards the end simply because everyone knew who the husband was, but they kept trying to tease the audience until the very last episode.

I think by now we all just want to know who is end game so that we can see how their relationship develops. In AM1997, it was pretty obvious who the husband was so we didn't really have to jump ship.

Required fields are marked *

Whatever words they use I don't think 'boring' is actually what people mean. I like the words javabeans used which is 'tedious'. In AM1997, there was a certainty to who the couple was going to be and so people watched the show to enjoy and not to search for clues as to who the husband is going to be or to compare the number of moments the contenders had with the main heroine. In 1997, it was a slow progression, but we knew we were going to get there and so the characters were still being developed in the process.

In 1994, on the other hand, it is tiring to watch 1994, because the mystery is really there. I'm not saying viewers do not like mystery, but it is starting to be tiring to watch and find clues as to who the husband is. Furthermore, I think to go through the relationship route this early on but still hold back on who the husband is, hurts the developments of the characters. Because the husband is still unknown, the characters are trapped in a vacuum and are limited in how they are going to be developed because the writers still have to pose the mystery of it all. Even if oppa-garbage turns out to be the husband in the end, as one commenter have said, the shippers cannot just enjoy the moment because they still have to contend with feelings of impending doom because a lot can still happen in 7 episodes.

As a CB shipper on the other hand, I for one, feels that the CB character is being yanked around a lot and is being heavily used by the writers mostly as a catalyst for other characters. He is being used as a catalyst, but nothing significant seems to be happening to him himself.

for me I'm watching for the story of everyone :) I love the relationship each person has with one another

as for the biases.... is there anything wrong with a person liking a drama because the guy they wanted became the husband?

Required fields are marked *

This is the first drama in a long time that made me actively look for recaps, threads, blogs and this seems to be the recurring theme with shippers that they take it extremely personal when they perceive someone is attacking their ship. It takes the fun out of guessing and yes, it is annoying when shippers are being so negative towards the other character when most viewers are merely analyzing what was presented to us so far and not necessarily riding a ship. Of course everyone is entitled to their own bias, but I think ideas could be presented in a way where people COULD show preference towards another character without the other camp being accusatory or defensive about it.

I don't understand why some people might feel cheated.

NJ never showed feelings to CB more than a friend.

What there is to feel cheated if oppa and her end together?

CB is like the second guys that never let go and think they are the best option the main girl have, no matter who she likes.

You are missing the whole gist of chilbong's character if you think he only thinks of himself as the best guy for her. He doesn't and nor has he ever said that to her. He has never even forced her to like him back. He simply likes her and is willing to wait however long he can for her. He respects her choice, he is the one who even talked to oppa and even confronted him about NJ. Oppa decided to confess to NJ because of that conversation he had with chilbong, if he was shelfish then he would have taken advantage of oppa not confessing and would have tried to lean NJ more towards his side, but he didn't do that, instead he chose to be upfront with oppa.

and the only reason he even keeps trying is because he believes in hard work and perseverance! He is not hurting anyone by not giving up then why should it bother anyone?

If you truly think what you said about chilbong is true then I'm sorry to say you haven't been watching the show or chilbong's character correctly. Even if you are a shipper, try to understand all the characters and their short comings.

He likes her and he does a lot for her in small and big ways. But he doesn't put her on a pedestal.

YES! Give me Trash Oppa anytime compared to the stereotypical main male lead who treats the main female lead so badly initially and become less of a jerk as he falls in love with her.

Trash is just behaving like a guy realizing he has deep feelings for a girl whom he has only seen as a little sister for the longest time. Thank goodness he is cute and nice, and is able to work through this internal conflict, albeit taking a bit too much time to the viewers' dismay.

Yes and that made the story made so realistic too and he is definitely not a jerk. I could see why the playful banter between him and Na-jung does not translate well to non-Koreans like me, but it comes across as very familiar and someone you have deep connection with. I'm just glad the confirmation of his feelings happened on this episode, FINALLY.

I am still not convinced that Trash oppa is still over his ex. I mean, yes, he appeared like everything was okay and casually turned down a request to join her for coffee. But also remember that he told his brother that he would be okay to have a cup of coffee with her. So, if he was really over her, why would he reject having a cup of coffee with her and limit his interaction with her?

Me thinks...thou oppa doth protests too much. And I do not think we have seen the last of the first love...

This so so much. Who knows? Maybe hard work will turn out to be fruitful in the end? I read this comments and say that hard work will not make someone love you and I have to say I do not completely agree. I think this only applies when the other person is not in love with another but what if the other person is not in love or realizes that he/she is not as in love as she thought she was. Because what do we really know about hard work when it comes to love? Most of us, when we know that the person doesn't like us back, we back off because we are scared of rejection OR we continue loving them on the sidelines without doing anything proactive to make them notice us and reciprocate our feelings, again because we are scared of rejection.

In this series, CB has shown his persistence so far, but I'm still interested as to how this drama will further show hard work when it comes to love.

That could be true, seeing that it looked like he was in the lobby and they're just outside (hopefully, he was in a different wing of the hospital) when he was having that phone conversation with that guy who sent him the socks.

But then, knowing CB and his single-minded determination, that kiss, if he did see that, will not deter him to fight for his love until the very end. That interview on TV when he said "It's not over 'til it's over" says it all. (Although I got a little peeved about that interview because he just parroted what his teammate said! It didn't really come from him. But whatever. I guess the writers wanted to show us he doesn't easily give up).

Well, I admit Trash not being endgame would be refreshing, but I would still like Trash and Nj to be endgame.

A lot of people are saying that CB's character not giving up and it isn't over yet, mean he must be end game, and it wouldn't make sense if he isn't. What are the pds message about ''it isn't over yet'' if CB doesn't get NJ?

Imo, if CB doesn't end being the husband, it would just show that sometimes, no matter how hard you work, some things aren't meant to be. Sometimes you can't win. I do like the idea that, if you work hard and don't give up you will accomplish what you want, but this isn't true in real life.

Yup, people should work hard, but sometimes even it isn't enough. Sometimes life is not fair. I know people that always worked hard and never gave up but still are struggling with life. I don't like to say the person didn't accomplish something because she didn't work harder enough, but because that is how life is, I know so many people that work hard and still can't accomplish their dreams.

I think it is unfair to say they didn't work hard enough, it is all about circumstances and chances life can give or not to a person.

i have to admit that kiss made me swoon. and i'm trying to be happy for her but the thought of chilbongie finding out breaks my heart. honestly guys, i was thinking as i was watching the new ep: we got annoyed at oppa when it felt like he was messing with her heart a little (myself included) but isn't that exactly what she's doing to chilbongie. for some reason nobody has really mentioned this, even jb. you do know that she's doing the exact same thing right> ignoring how he feels and treating him like a buddy more than a man, doing exactly what oppa did to her. i adore them all honestly, but i couldn't ignore it once i really saw it.

and it just does not seem fair. that he keeps throwing hints at her, like when they're at the library, and he told her that he took the class because of her so she could teach him, and the times he asks her to eat with him and she blows him off repeatedly without a second thought. at least tell the guy you're in love with oppa and distance yourself somewhat officially so that he can try to move on a little or deal with the pain easier instead of being ignored.

i know that chilbongies chances are slim, and i'll deal with that somehow, but at this point i just want it all to be revealed so that if it's not him we have enough time to see how he moves on rather than telling us in the last episode and knowing next to nothing as to how he deals with it.

lastly, did anyone else notice the two stuffed animals kissing each other in the beginning of the ep, and the other stuffed animal watching. i assumed that it meant chilbongie would catch them kissing but didn't quite work out like that.

anyway, chilbongie , i'm rooting for you. and sorry oppa, but i'm a little annoyed after seeing just how petty you were when she told you that she was gonna study with chilbongie. he really didn't have to go so far. regardless of how long chilbongie has known about the two, he has always stayed out of their personal buisness. oppa needs to do the same. na jeong, be good to our chilbongie!!

he wasn't really messing with her heart but even if he was (which watever), na jung is NOT doing the same to him. we don't know about their conversation after he confessed but she doesn't like him (atm), hasn't shown any indication, treats him VERY platonically. i don't know how clear you can get he chooses to do everything to get close to him and when she draws her lines purposefully or not that's not her problem to be indebted to the feelings he holds for her. he knows she's in love with oppa and he literally said it i feel like a lot of us are not watching the same drama but she deserves absolutely no blame

She is not doing the same to him. AT ALL. CB knows NJ loves Oppa and NJ couldn't be more clearer that she loves Oppa. She didn't even need to answer his confession (like he said) because there was nothing to answer to him. And as for "treating him like a buddy" -- that's because he is.

What was she suppose to do at all his hints? She already likes someone else... he knows that. She helps him because she considers him a good friend. She doesn't ask him to do stuff for her, it's the other way around. And he moved in to her house, so it's not like she can (or should) avoid him.

I would like to see more insight about CB's love for NJ. He talking about it. Please show?

Why he likes her? Why he can't give up? What NJ did to make him fall in love for her this much? Is it really love or a crush?

Why he can't let go? Is this really because he loves NJ too much, or is it because he has to win and doesn't accept defeat? Because he never lost before when he out his effort into it?

What if CB and NJ start to date, and CB interest/illusion is gone?

It can happen. Sometimes the person is so much in love with someone, that the image they see, is nothing alike what the person really is.

That is why, some couples that dated for years break up when they start to live with each other or after they marry...

ok, i get what you mean. but if you think about it he started liking her before he knew there was really anything between her and oppa. i think it was obvious from the start that she made an impression on him. she is so real. she acts like one of the boys, eats sloppily, slouches, has a potty mouth and yet it makes her all the more endearing to us. i'm sure it would have been the same for him. coming from a rich family, where there are expectations upon him and people around him who have to be a certain way, she's probably a breath of fresh air from him. and seeing how warm she was towards him, maybe that's not something he has experienced in the past.

think of your first love. a lot of the times there's not really this huge reason . you're young, naive, and there's a person who just makes you feel something totally foreign. you like that feeling and you're going to approach it and make a few mistakes along the way. she seems to be his first love. he's new to it all and he worn't have it planned out but at least he's doing it with heart. he obviously adores her, the way he stares at her is proof enough. maybe it's her straightforward personality or that she was so willing to accept him when he hasn't hard that kind of warmth before. the main thing though is that he's fallen for her. i don't think he 'likes her'. we've all been through it, and the way he looks at her... that's something different :)

in this case, i don't think there needs to be a big reason. sometimes you find that being around someone makes you really happy, and i think she's that person for him.

i know we all have our own opinion on this, but this just happens to be mine.

I may be the only one, but i find garbage really weird and don't like hin being with NJ. Don't get me wrong, at first I liked him being kind and funny - but now I find him almost creepy... The way he treats binggrae with the chin - seriously? Brr... I also feel he is treating NJ like a little girl with the patting and so on...
I did not enjoy the scenes between those two - dunno.

I am absolutely devastated that they shipped off my Haitai - geez I love this guy and kinda want him to be the one <3 ahaha

Generally I really enjoy am1994 bc it displays the characters and their daily life so nicely :) however I am wondering how much is still going to happen until 2002 - let's be honest I find it odd that NJ and Garbage are dating now in 1995 but wait 7 years until marriage. I expect a lot to come! Also I am still not convinced that garbage is going to be the husband - still 7 episodes of 90min(urgh the length o___O) to go and a lot can still happen.

Well for myself I hope Haitai is coming back soon and swoons NJ off her feet :3 otherwise I rather ship with Chil Bong ^^

Trash would need to complete another year before he does his 2 (? or was it 3?) yrs service in the Army. After that he would have to start his impossible Internship and then onto his Residency.
From what I hear, doctors practically live in the hospital up to their 2nd year in Residency, so Trash wouldn't have enough time or mind to marry, let alone date, NJ, even if he would have loved to.

So, yes, I think it would realistically take 7 years to marry NJ.
