Sparks, showers, and near-kisses in You From Another Star

Well these people certainly know how to tease a show. The first two trailers are out for SBS’s new Kim Soo-hyun-as-alien fantasy rom-com You From Another Star, and already he’s half-nekkid and taking broody showers. He sure looks good for someone four centuries old, especially when he doesn’t even have to drink human blood to stay forever young… that we know of.
The new romantic comedy from the writer of You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly and the PD of Tree With Deep Roots stars Kim Soo-hyun as a space-traveling alien who crash-lands in 17th-century Joseon and lives four hundred years to the present day. Jeon Ji-hyun co-stars as the top actress with a diva complex he’ll fall in love in with. Or perhaps it’s the other way around.
The first teaser hints at a possible early encounter between them, when the heroine was young and he looked exactly the same. The only line is his: “I’ll protect you.” In the second, she gives a celebrity interview in character about her first love, whom she describes as tall and good-looking. “It was a brief encounter, but it felt otherworldly and warm at the same time.” She says she’d recognize him in an instant if they ever met again, like it was Fate. And this time he asks her, “Who are you?”
It looks pretty great so far, with potential for sweeping romance and a whimsical tone. Not to mention chemistry between the leads, who already sizzled in The Thieves. But what am I saying. You had me at shower, Show.
You From Another Star replaces Heirs on Wednesdays/Thursdays in late December.

I don't understand people who even thought that it might be good? Right from the casting and premise, it was obviously going to be some ridiculous story about privileged brats???
As for this drama, I find the main actor a bit overrated (or maybe I'm just annoyed by his many squealing fans) but I think I will enjoy the drama because I LOVE the writer of this drama and the PD. Also, it's nice to see a early 2000s/late 1990s star back on t.v.

But also, there's a lot of... Um... Things to cover up so they'd pretty much have to cover up her entire body and just show her washing her hair, which can be shown in a salon scene. Makes no sense.
And why do you want to know anyway? There's fanservice, there's sasaengservice, and then there's just freaking "No one wants to do it except Miley Cyrus, but no one wants to see that" pervservice.
I rest my case.

I second that! Cant believe i actually feels that way to a LMH drama, but man Heir is just meh.
The trailer looks promising, crossing my fingers XD let us all not jinx this, i need my dose of crackalicious drama to fill the hollow in my fangirl heart after TMS (yes Joo-Gun, i'm still into you).

Right?! That was such a cop-out. Ditch the towel, shoot from the waist up or from the back and show the butt (maybe only J-dramas can get away with that). These are sensible options so why go for the unrealistic one.

I'm probably in the minority who doesn't care about the shower or the dude's looks, but the premise sounds very interesting. We have plenty of ajeossi romances coming soon, so I think an "old soul" type of noona romance is a great balance at this point.
I also think Kim Soo Hyun is a very good young actor and he's definitely got what it takes to be the lead in this. Since the character is not human, charisma and an otherworldly quality matter and I think Kim does have that kind of a vibe.
I'll definitely check this out and I hope it does not go the melo tragic love way. Just give us a happy series that isn't shallow fluff. You can do that you know, kdrama.

I don't care if people think they are hot, but it seems like for a lot of them hotness is the only thing that counts.
As someone said on another site a few days ago - "the fan girls would be slobbering over LMH if all he did was kick a dog for 20 episodes".

Lee Min Ho doesn't do it for me, so he had better do a whole lot more than kick a dog for twenty episodes (though that would be a huge turnoff for anyone not possessed of a sadistic bent, would it not, regardless as to how handsome the lead actor might be?). Fortunately, I think he's got some pretty good acting chops.

No, I don't care at all for shower scenes (in general).
I'm all for eye candy (KSH looks fine, but doesn't top my list... I think we both are more favourably inclined towards Kang Dong won ;-) ), but if the acting is crap and the writing bad/stupid, all the eye candy in the world is not enough for me (Last Cinderella, I'm looking at you).
I agree, the premise sounds good, the only thing that annoys me (greatly, I must confess) is that they had to make KSH's character a uni professor. I hate when they do that in dramas/films (City Hunter was another one), because people that age are NOT PROFESSORS. (Yes, I know he's 400-years old and probably has a super-brain, but it's not like his employers know that. To them, he'll be a 20-something.)

In real life I heard there is a 18 years old professor and 17 years old too. If you search. you will read a few too young professors. :) But it's too rare.

There are lecturers that are that age – a handful, a few rare and exceptional cases, sure, but you don't become a professor the instant you get your doctorate.

I am also annoyed when it's a normal person without a super-genius and sometimes even clearly lacking in skills, but it makes sense for him.
Universities won't look at age if the person in question is a true genius and unmatched in their field. They want the prestige and potentially pioneering work such a person can bring.
Considering he's an alien, he's probably the smartest person on the planet and as long as he's legal, they'd hire him. Heck, they'd probably even try to hire a kid if they were proved to be a born genius. So a guy who's about 25 (or looks about 25) is realistically quite the catch, if they are a genius of their time.

It makes sense in terms of his intelligence, but that's not enough. Yes, universities would be interested in taking on anyone with outstanding intelligence, but what counts the most is published research. They want people who do pioneering research and publish, and whose research gets cited widely.
They might hire a kid if s/he is a genius, but being hired at uni doesn't make you a professor. People start as lecturers, or more often, they start as Postgraduate teaching assistants, go on to being postdocs to lecturers (nowadays often only part-time) to assistant professors and finally professors. If you are lucky you might skip some of these steps (the postdoc), but you just don't instantly become a professor and many don't make it beyond the lectureship. Indeed, in the States, the moment you are on tenure-track and don't make it within a certain number of years you are essentially screwed (so I hear).
We'll see if KSH character will actually be a professor, or whether that's just a fancy label they stuck on him like happens most of the time.
(Possible though that in Korea the academic system is more manipulable.)

Well.. I'm sure they didn't think it through that much.. I mean, geniuses are a dime a dozen in kdramas and doing impossible things.. off the top of my head SSH in My Princess was like a diplomat plus whatever, in currently airing MTT, the main has degrees that are not possible in his age.
And they get into Columbia and Harvard the moment they decide to.. kdrdamas never need any logistics

Yeah I'm into this show because the plot is interesting and it might actually be a good show. This is the only show that I've really looked forward to this year since everything else(except Secret, good show!) has been kinda stale to me.
I'm not a fan of Kim Soo Hyun, but the boy CAN act, and I loved the lead actress in all the movies I've seen her in so that's something to look forward to at least.

JJH character looks pretty. I think not many this character lately in the dramas. usually the male chaebol/actors type more.

I was too distracted by the fact he was showering in a towel to fully appreciate the actual showering. I'm assuming it's one of his alien quirks and he does some things differently. I hope the show plays up the idea that he doesn't think like a human, but if he has been on earth for 400 years I'm assuming he's got pretty good at faking it by now.

oooooh Jeon Ji-hyun! She's breathtaking, all right - and while I am not crazy about Kim Soo-hyun, their chemistry looks solid.
(and thank god for him finally having a leading lady who can act and who has some spark with him, I was not up for a repeat of Han Ga-in from Moon/Sun, ugh)

Looks great & fun & I can't wait to watch! But I'm scared to commit because can a 400 yr old alien that never gets old and a normal human HAVE a happy ending? It's like vampire love stories...they rarely end well. With either the vampire outliving the one he/she loves sooner or later. But at least a vampire can turn his loved one immortal vampire if they want to(even though they never want to because they know immortality of needing to drink blood to live is more of a curse)...with him being an alien he can't turn her into one so I'm scared of a sad ending..or maybe the drama won't bother to go there and end with a fluffy short term ending.
I'll still watch most likely but I hope there will be a good happy ending.

The problem with these "immortal vs normal people" plots is that far too often the writer cannot find a good way to get around your vampire scenario. I hope this does better, but not hoping for anything really original.
And I hope that 400 year old guy does not claim to have never had any previous girlfriends :D

To be honest I will mostly be watching to see if Jeon Ji-hyun can get her mojo back. She came out swinging with her first movies, but most of what she has done since Windstruck has been rather mediocre. Yes, both The Thieves and Berlin File did well at the box office. But god, they are bore to watch. Let's hope a rom-com is what it will take for her to shine again.

Kim Soo Hyun so makes me happy I possess a muscular appreciation of the aesthetic. Those trailers had me grinning like a fool (I didn't even notice our hero was wearing a towel in the shower until someone pointed out that bit of WTFery) and sooooo looking forward to when this drama premieres. Even if the script sucks, I might be well inclined to put the volume on mute and just drink in that man's sheer pulchritude. The premise seems brimming with drama crack potential, however, so I remain ever hopeful. This show will arrive just in time to help me deal with holiday hosting stress. Yes!

Oh My God! My baby Soohyun is so HOT!! I'm so excited for this drama to begin because i am really interested about the story. I mean there wasn't really much of dramas about Alien you know. And i really wanted to see Soohyun as an alien (plus that shower scene as bonus). And this drama made JJH go back to the drama world after 14 years so it must be good right? Not to mention it got Park Hae Jin & Yoo In Na as 2nd leads. So excited already, i hope Heirs end soon (I love Kim Woo Bin but that drama is -_-). And i miss Soohyun in drama so much so Dec. 18 please come faster.
