Man From Another Star changes title (again), begins script rehearsals
by girlfriday
I’m pretty sure I couldn’t tell you the difference between Man From Another Star, Lover From Another Star, or You From Another Star, but that’s the title they’re sticking to, they swears it this time. SBS’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama, whatever its name is, has released its first stills of the star-studded cast gathered for the inaugural script read. I don’t know why the show went through so many title changes, but coming from the writer of You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, I’m beginning to see a pattern here (the construction is the same in Korean, and in full, the title is the rather cumbersome You Who Came From A Star).
The new fusion fantasy rom-com will be helmed by PD Jang Tae-yoo of Tree With Deep Roots, and stars Kim Soo-hyun (Covertly, Grandly) as the titular star-traversing alien who crashes in 17th-century Joseon and lives four hundred years to the present day. He’ll fall in love with Jeon Ji-hyun (The Berlin File), a Hallyu goddess with a prickly personality to match her top-star ego.
The second leads have been confirmed as Yoo Inna (You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin) playing the heroine’s frenemy, and Park Hae-jin (My Daughter Seo-young) as a mysterious chaebol with a secret agenda. I don’t know where this leaves Yunho, who was being courted to play Jeon Ji-hyun’s fiancé–has that character been written out, or are we still waiting on a confirmation? The cast also includes veterans Lee Il-hwa (Answer Me 1994) and Good Doctor’s Kim Chang-wan, Na Young-hee, and Jo Hee-bong. Newbie Ahn Jae-hyun plays Jeon Ji-hyun’s little brother, a high school gangster with a ‘tude.
You From Another Star follows Heirs in December.

i'm here mainly for Yoo In Na and Park Hae Jin. ♥
not sure about the soo hyun and jun ji hyun pairing tho and her character is someone who's been portrayed before, the classic b*itchy actress who gets the main guy.
this does remind me of queen in hyun's man and ironic enough In Na is in this one, why isn't she picking lead roles tho? after her success role in queen in hyun?

Was Queen In Hyun really big in Korea? I know that people would probably remember the drama for the dating news that came right after, but I don't remember if it was consider a hit. Since it was from cable, probably less people have seen it...
Just curious, because except for that leading role, her other roles were supporting ones in dramas from the Big 3 (Best Love, Secret Garden, You're the Best Lee Soon Shin). Since these dramas were well known, maybe people still see her as supporting actress material?

QIHM's highest eps was around 3.6%. For a 16eps low budget drama on cable, I'd say it was very successful.

Contrary to what people think, actors don't "pick up a script". They wait for the phone to ring and they are basically happy to have some work. Only the 1% lucky hot celebs of the moment have the luxury of choosing what they do. There is also the problem of the connections in the K ent: Is your agency a good one or not? And finally, a woman who is officially having a relationship like YIN is considered having less value in Dramaland. :(

really? A woman having a relationship decreases her value as an actress? What does that have to do with her acting ability?

In SK Dramaland, it's almost considered like a retirement announcement to say that you're with someone and for women it's worst than for the guys. Producers tend to think that they lose their "pure and innocent" image which is suitable for a female lead in dramas: Cause of course women are all virgins until they meet their Prince Charming even if they are 35 years old... >.>
It's also true that most actresses (not all) tend to become shy with romantic scenes once they have a RL partner, may it be because of jealousy or because they want to avoid scandals (if they are married, it's worst).
Basically, nobody knows how to separate private life/job: If you're single, do what you want but after that...
Things are changing but very slowly.

i always thought it was only really a big deal when actresses get married.. then they really have a hard time getting roles, unless they're a really good actress. i always got the impression that for idol group members, dating would be a big blow to their image, though, cos i feel like girl idols rely more on projecting a certain image than actresses do, but idk maybe not...

I agree that getting married may be a career damper for some actresses, but not dating. Gong Hyo Jin, Song Hye Gyo, Lee Na Young all have been in and out of relationships but their careers have not suffered because of that. Nobody thought that they were retiring when they announced that they were dating Ryu Seung Beom or Hyun Bin or Won Bin. Some actresses even do much better after getting married. Jeon Ji Hyun isn't doing bad either despite being married. It all depends on who you are as an actress.

Thanks for explaining. I've definitely heard this sentiment before but more concerning females who get married.
This dating thing confuses me though. Because like another commenter, PPasun, pointed out with the examples of actresses she gave, it doesn't seem that woman who are dating are on the same "level" as those who are married? Or are they the exception, not the rule?
Any examples you can think of? Because there's a ton of leading ladies out there, and surely they cannot be all single. Or like all hiding their boyfriends. lol. This is the first I've heard of it. :)

i'm sorry. Lee Bo Young date Ji Sung for years bf they got married but still secured a leading character in 2 hits drama thiy year. Hwang Jung Eum in a relationship too but still have successful drama as a leading lady. Everyone know their famous celebrity partner.
its not bc when they're in the relationship they consider having less value. Its matter of opinion and choice. Knowing YIN she always pick a good script and her drama always high rating.
btw, Mawile QIHM consider hit in SK as a cable tv drama. :)

Lee Bo Young was only cast in My Daughter Seo Young after Choi Jung Won refused it at the last minute and she was cast in IHYV after Gong Hyo Jin and who knows how many other actresses refused it (remember, it was even discarded in favor of another drama which LBY was going to star in but then people started complaining about her pairing with someone young enough to be her son)... and clearly SBS never expected IHYV to be a hit given how hastily it was organized. Plus, rumor has it that she even had a hard time getting an agency contract because of her upcoming marriage. LBY was very very lucky this year to have two surprise hits.
So LBY is in fact the exception that proves the rule. She has never been an A list actress but her career was puttering out in weekend dramas and the occasional hero-worshipping weekday role until this year. Here's to hoping she breaks the stigma of dating/marriage for actresses - but I'm not holding my breath.

What about people like Han Gain? She got the main role in Moon That Embraces the Sun and did pretty well for herself there, I would think.

November 5, 2013 at 6:16 AM
@ sera, Han Ga In has been hampered both by her marriage and her general lack of acting skills. She was also a last minute replacement for Moon Geun Young in the Moon that Embraces the Sun... interestingly enough, the original OTP for that drama was going to be Moon Geun Young - Song Joong Ki.
Basically, before Bad Guy, she had kind of dropped off the radar and like LBY was lucky to have had both Intro to Architecture and TMTETS in a short span. I don't really expect her to make much of a splash in the future.

@Annie - I was surprised Gong Hyo-jin turned down IHYV since the script was one of the solidest we've seen on a major network this year and the role was great plus she's always said she checks for scripts first, and then I remembered that she might have turned it down because of wanting to avoid Biscuit Teacher redux.
(and BTSC was a great drama, but I can see how the highschooler-in-love angle in IHYV is reminiscent of that, esp. with the same actress in both roles. But I'm thrilled Lee Bo-young took it, because she was perfect as Hye-sung and thanks to that, we got GHJ in Master's Sun)
And Moon/Sun went from Moon Geun-young to Han Ga-in for leading lady? Good heavens, WHAT a downgrade - imagine how much more watchable that drama could have been in its adulthood portions, if the heroine's eyes actually contained some expression. (I can live with Kim Soo-hyun instead of Song Joong-ki, but I always wondered why HGI got the part - she was a decade too old for the character and couldn't emote even half as well as Kim Yoo-jung).
Annie
November 5, 2013 at 8:13 AM
@pogo, it seems like LJS was a huge factor in making the show popular, so perhaps GHJ didn't really see anything special in the script? I wouldn't know because I was not a big fan of the show.
Re: Han Ga In/ Moon Geun Young, Han Ga In makes me want to reach inside the screen and smack some emotion into her (she looks much younger than her actual age so I guess I understood why the production turned to her) whereas Moon Geun Young, while technically a very very fine actress, is so blah and childlike on screen. I guess I like actresses who have more screen presence and sensuality.
pogo
November 6, 2013 at 7:03 AM
@Annie - LJS of course played a huge part, but the writer of IHYV, Park Hae-ryun, also did Dream High (of which I was not a fan, thanks to some terrible lead actors - but the writing was what saved it).
Even though I was not initially a fan of the premise, I have to admit that IHYV had possibly the best opening script/episode of anything on Korean network tv this year (and LJS wasn't even in most of it) - I can't claim to read Gong Hyo-jin's mind, but she does have a decent eye for scripts, which is why I feel that it's more likely she passed on this one thanks to avoiding typecasting, than that she thought it wasn't good.
(this is not to say that IHYV was perfect, but it did have some of the best-written relationships I've seen on tv this year, and I'm not talking about just the romantic ones- my favourite thing about the show was the relationship between the two female leads)

November 6, 2013 at 7:07 AM
@Annie - also re: Han Ga-in, you and I have the exact same urge! Those wide, blank eyes are seriously off-putting, some people just have no aptitude for acting no matter how many classes they take and it looks like she is one of them.
Moon Geun-young is staggeringly talented, but sometimes I wish she'd take on characters that were a little less brain-dead. She had more than enough fire in Cinderella's Sister, it makes me want to throw things when I see her slogging through things like that pottery nightmare drama.

Mystisith is not saying she personally thinks women in relationships have less value. She is saying this is a k drama industry issue-women in long term relationships have 'image' issues in how both directors and producers see them as well as how the public sees them. And she's not wrong, this is one reason k celebs are so guarded about their personal lives.
I have noticed, based on blogs and comments, etc., that there seems to be perhaps a cultural thing with an inability to separate character from actor. How many times have we seen complaints about castings because of leads being in relationships with other people? How often do we see comments about people thinking that two leads must have something going on in real life---because they held hands on a bloody tv show? I can remember cracking up after seeing a comment after the LBY-JS marriage saying Lee Jong-suk must be upset.
K drama actresses cannot win-they have to maintain a pure or chaste image, and when are in a long term relationship, they become untouchable in a different way. And if they are married, that's another layer of separation, and then if they have a kid, another. And if they get divorced....
There is just this balance beam of image that is just impossible to maintain and be human.

Exactly: This is the system established by the casting agencies/PD/netizens, each one pretending to know what the other wants. As for me, I strictly don't care about the private life of the actors as long as they do their job correctly and as long as it doesn't interfere with it. I generally learn the private life facts of the actors after everyone else and only if it's advertized everywhere...

I find all of the k entertainment industry stuff scary. I'd snap.
I try my best to stay away from all the personal stuff. It IS everywhere, and sometimes I get sucked in.
For one, I too just care about the actors doing the job. I also think everyone needs to be left alone in their personal lives. And third, I kinda don't believe anything a celeb says unless it's proof positive somehow. These people are professional liars for darn sake, and combined that with the obsession over image, not exactly trustworthy. I randomly read an interview with Lee Jun Ki once, and they asked him if he was seeing someone. He said something to the effect that he wasn't but if he was, he'd lie about it. I thought that was great.

@Mar - speaking of Lee Jong-seok, the shippers will always crack me up - there was Lee Bo-young's marriage, and then Kim Woo-bin went public with the news that he had a girlfriend. Same wacky reactions each time, ha.
The k-ent world is weird sometimes. It's warped that something as normal as two adults dating is enough to put an end to the career of said adults, or at least hamper it - which is why I wish all the best to the ones who do go public, because they have a LOT to lose (v. often CF offers, if not acting projects - I suspect that's one reason why Park Shin-hye said she would never go public with a relationship, and why we'll probably never see, say, Yoon Eun-hye or Shin Mina in one while they're in their peak acting years)
And there are enough older (i.e. 25+) actors who've never publicly been in a relationship, that you know some of them have to have had someone under wraps.

I get why they want to do this..talk about hollywood, the more I know about their private lives the less I am interested in their reel lives. There comes a point where..if Brad Pitt and Angie Jolie were to star with other female/male leads involving romance or chemistry, I cannot related to it anymore because they are over exposed by the paparazzi. I guess you want people to feel the on screen romance and make it more believable. My two cents!

Yes I agree. This isn't just something going on in the Kdrama industry but all over. People in open relationships (and even more so when married) have a "harder" time in making an onscreen romance "sell" enough for some people. I'm not saying I agree, but lets face it it is a major part in it.
The same is seen in idols and the like. Having an open relationship cuts of the fantasy so to speak, because reality goes against the fantasy becoming true.

I think YIN once mentioned that she doesn't aspire to be a top star, she just wants to be able to act in pieces that people would love, doesn't even matter to her if she's 2nd lead or even just the friend. Girl has positive outlook! :)
And though YIN is from YGe, I don't think her agency is that powerful in the drama/film industry (music, YES), so it seems she's basically on her own. But for her to included in a high-profile drama like this one (with A-listers like KSH and JJH) and just a few months after her last work, kinda means that she's doing relatively well. I fine her endearing, hence I'm happy for her.

there's no big or small roles amongst great actors/actresses. It's how you portray that 5-mins or 120 mins. screen time.
We have this actor in our country who's been an actor for more than 60 years. He can be a lead, an antagonist, a romantic guy, a villain, a killer, a lover, a father, etc. He was brought to hall of fame in our award giving bodies both as supporting actor (5x) and as a director (5x). But what i like about him is that he doesn't care about billings. You can put his name along the pine print for all he cares =).
I digress...Anyway, i admire YIN's attitude on acting which you mentioned. Maybe, that's the reason why she's great in acting and always stood out in her roles.
Actresses/Actors who starts to think they are only lead materials, will mean less work for them. Most of the time, those who can afford less work are the big stars who've proven themselves like Won Bin and Jeon Do Youn, or have started alternative careers like directing/scriptwriting - Yoo JI Tae, Kim Yun Seok and Ha Jung Woo

The fiancee at the start who ditches the heroine and only pops back into the story every 4-5 eps to bring the awkward and cause jealousy (at The Only Restaurant/Hotel/Coffee Shop in Seoul)?
I hope it's that kind of role so Hae Jin can be the real 2nd lead. :)

Part of me is anticipating this, and another part is still confused about it. It sounds cute, funny and zany, but at the same time I'm left thinking that it'll be a flop. I didn't think so at first, but actually seeing the cast at the script read, I'm getting reservations. What is the point of an alien crash-landing in 17th century Korea, if the bulk of the show will take place in modern times? Makes no sense to me. All I can say is, the show better do a good job of explaining that in the first place, or I'll drop this show like a hot potato.
My other reservation is that Yoo Inna is playing yet another bitchy character. She's so much better than that, and I wish she'd stop taking those roles, especially second lead roles. She's got the looks and the acting chops to play the lead more often than she has. I haven't seen Queen In-hyun's Man, but by all accounts she was fantastic in it, right?

A 400 yo alien is interesting for the romantic dynamic, furthermore if he looks like a young man (with superpowers!). Imagine the obnoxious woman scolding him, insisting on seniority and on her "experience of life" when in fact he could teach her a thing or 2 (IHYV2)... I just can't wait for the OMG moment when she'll discover the real identity of Clark Kent.
In the meta department, we can also assume that during all those years he polished his actor skills (sageuk speech is precious) and the art of blending in his environment. Maybe she's a bad actress in need of lessons? I want kisses rehearsals! The kind who start technical and which derail because of the natural attraction.*Evil grin*.

Hmm, I think JJH's character is supposed to be grad student age... I think what happened was that they cast KSH to act as someone much older than his actual age and JJH to act as someone a bit younger. I remember reading that Lee Jung Jae was on board for a long time until he finally said no, so I think we're just supposed to overlook the fact that KSH looks so young.

I think Kim Soo-hyun is decent enough, but he has yet to really impress me with his acting (the fact that he won for TMTETS is a total joke) and for that matter, don't understand the appeal of Yoo Inna (her acting or looks - she's OK in either dept. but doesn't stand out in either way).

tbh I had zero interest in this drama until it was announced that Yunho was considering a role in it (I know he's not the best actor but I'm 100% Yunho biased so I guess it doesn't really bother me much, though I think he should probably steer clear of acting to avoid the backlash). I thought it would be great if he took the role since he would get to meet Jeon Ji Hyun who he always said was his ideal type. But with no word for quite some time I assumed that they must have knocked back the role and I was totally prepared to forget about this drama.
The plots seems to have all the makings of a formulaic Korean rom-com and the alien element is really a turn-off for me. On top of which I don't really like Kim Soo Hyun. So I was going to give this drama a miss until I saw this article and found out that Ahn Jae Hyun is making his acting debut in this drama. I've been hoping that he would take up acting since I saw K.Will's Please Don't mv and what with all the models making successful transitions into acting atm I guess it was only a matter of time. He's even playing my favourite type of character, the high school gangster /swoons
Just because of Ahn Jae Hyun I'm eagerly anticipating the airing of this drama!

What can I say ..... I'm looking forward to this!
Given the premise, I'm thinking the story can go in several interesting directions, especially with KSH and his talent in the mix. Let's see what happens.
Wishing them all the best with this project!

I bought Queen In-Hyun's Man. Yoo In ah was awesome in it. I wanted to stab her character mostly in You're the best Lee Soon Shin. I think she's good at becoming her characters. I'm glad she's doing well.
Hopefully this will be more Mork & Mindy then as the makjang trope turns. I'm praying amnesia is not mentioned ever.

I'm always scared for projects that come with a lot of big name actors and big budgets. Look at Medical Top team. It's last place in its slot right now.

i was so excited to see Jun Ji-hyun again in a television series after like a decade. It was with her movie 'My Sassy Girl' that introduced me to k-drama world and was by then hooked and gets crazily attached to whatever good k-dramas i follow. can't wait for this! i need more stills please :')

Jeon Ji Hyun? I'm in ! Yoo In Na ? I'm in already!!!!
man I really love yoo in na a lot ! I appreciated her as a lead in QIHM.
I think she's so humble, she never hesitates second lead roles ,even if she's got a hit lead drama. Yup I must agree that she's got a beautiful body and charm both... But I like her attitude towards the role she receives.

Yay, Ahn Jae-hyeon (similar? or same name???), the guy in K.Will's "Please Don't..." MV (just search for it, don't wanna *spoil* XD)???
I see Lee Kyung-kyu. XD
Hmm, if the title's format construction is like (the original title of) "You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly"..."You From Another Star/You Who Came From A Star" might resemble something like 별에서 나온다는 당신.
(is the title right?)

I definitely love You From Another Star more than two previous title. Okay, so maybe there is really no difference between them, but I have this things for "You" words, so, yey for You From Another Star (You Who Came From A Star is double yeys)
I had heart attack when I see this article bcs seriously this is my most anticipated drama and the first thing I look when I opened this is for Yunho's existence. Thanks to whoever there in drama land for keeping him away from it. (and I really really hope that it won't be temporally) I really can't imagine what kind of breaking sound my heart will make if Yunho really made it as the second lead.
So instead, I really hope for hotter second lead. or maybe, someone cute. Because Park Hae Jin played the older brother, how about Kim Shi Hoo? or Jung Kyung Ho? or anyone but Yunho? C'mon second lead. I need second lead to fall in love with
I was expecting for Lee Hyun Woo to appear out of nowhere in this drama, but I think Ahn Jae Hyun is fine.
