Lee Min-ki dives into action noir for Emperor
by javabeans
Lee Min-ki, doing noir? YES NOW PLEASE.
A film titled For the Emperor has announced its principal lineup: In addition to Lee Min-ki (Temperature of Love, Chilling Romance), the film will star Park Sung-woong (New World, or maybe you’ll recall him better as independence leader Dong-jin in Gaksital) and Lee Tae-im (The Punisher, Special Investigations Unit). Solid choices, which I think we can get excited about. (I can’t vouch for Lee Tae-im, but the men are definitely awesome actors who should light it up in an action noir project.)
The plot of For the Emperor (not to be confused with a drama that was almost titled that, which then got renamed Can Love Become Money) starts with Lee Min-ki as a former baseball player who gets caught game-fixing and loses everything. The role promises to show his tough, masculine side, while Park Sung-woong (who has plenty of tough masculine charisma already) lends a hand to Lee Min-ki once he’s hit rock bottom and homeless… but brings him into his circle of organized crime. Out of the frying pan, into the fire?
The titular Emperor is a reference to that gang, which rules the underworld of loan sharks and gambling, and Park is its boss. Meanwhile, Lee Tae-im plays the bar owner who’ll romance Lee Min-ki. For the Emperor, which is produced by the company who gave us Ajusshi and The Snowpiercer, Opus Pictures, will begin filming in early December and plans to release sometime next year.

Lee minki, yay! He's just one of those terribly talented people who lights up any character he does. Don't think we wi have to fault him in that. Sounds like a promising darkish movie. Good luck for him. On a side note, just read about Paul walker as well and can't get over it.

Speaking of LeeMinKi being a 1985er why has he not gone for his national service? Has gone for it before his career sparked?

He has until next year for his informal "deadline" to enlist aka 30th birthday (Korean age). And frankly, I'm not surprised he's pushing the deadline because his career has been heating up with all the film projects he's gotten this past couple of years.

In everything I've seen Lee Min-ki in (which granted is like three projects) he has been solid and full of charisma. I first saw him in Shut Up! Flower Boy Band where he stole the limelight in the first two episodes. Then I watched Romantic Island and he was fantastic in the ensemble cast. Then in Quick he was awesome, funny, and badass. Those three roles were so good, I've been eager to see him in anything else. So this movie, while not exactly my cup of tea, I'll be seeing, just because he's such a fantastic actor. Looking forward to it!
