Lee Jun-ki offered last spot in 1 Night 2 Days cast
by javabeans
Some good news and some bad news: Lee Jun-ki is the newest name to be put into the mix as a potential 1 Night 2 Days member, after previously reported castings ended up falling through after all—SHINee idol Min-ho and singer John Park ended up dropping the show, after being announced as done deals. Remember how I said this production keeps changing its mind and can’t decide on anything? It’s crazy, but the show, which begins filming tomorrow, has not yet finalized its lineup for Season 3. Tick tock.
Lee Jun-ki’s reps confirmed on the 21st that he had received the offer, saying that while he is considering it, nothing has been decided. If he were to sign on, it would be the first time he’s doing variety… and damn, I might have to start watching 1N2D again. There are other cast members I like but aren’t enough to drive me to jump back on that sinking ship; on the other hand, I’m too curious about Lee Jun-ki to miss catching his variety debut.
So for the show’s sake, Lee Jun-ki would be quite the get, given his high profile and his tendency to stay out of the spotlight when he isn’t acting. Yet I do have to wonder whether it’s the best thing for Lee Jun-ki himself, because he strikes me as such a serious actor, and one who’s dedicated to improving the craft, that I don’t know if he’d want to risk jeopardizing his image for that.
It’s not that 1N2D would tarnish his image, but it would change it entirely by presenting a real-life persona and it’s not always easy to ignore that when watching the actor then act in roles. (I have a hard time seeing Uhm Tae-woong as his characters now, and Joo-won’s aegyo habits will follow his image around for a while.) Variety hinges on “ruining” your image for entertainment, and while there are a ton of benefits to doing it—a sense of intimacy with fans, a broader audience—there’s a price you pay. I guess this means I’m torn, because I’d love to watch him on the show, but wouldn’t be crushed if he decided against it either. One day. Tick tock.
The cast members who are confirmed are returning members Chat Tae-hyun and Kim Jong-min, along with new members Kim Joo-hyuk, Jung Joon-young, and Defconn. Veterans Tae-hyun and Jong-min begin shooting a day early by going to basecamp today, while the newbies will begin shoots on the 22nd. Season 3’s first episode will air on December 1.

spot on, javabeans. it's a dilemma. I love him as an actor, but whenever I get a glimpse of him not acting (i.e. interviews, or on Twitter, etc.), he doesn't strike me as someone who is ready to reveal a lot about himself. He has a very melancholic vibe, in fact. So, for his sake, I am not sure this would be good.

yeah, his post-project interviews after he came out of military service just reinforced that, for me.

Oh gosh he was hilarious, the bamboo forest was my favorite part and the cast back then were equally hilarious and awesome.
I would love if he make a guest appearance in 1N2D instead of being part of the main cast. I want to see him in dramas and movies more.

It is a dilemma, but I think it would be good for Junki as a person. I don't know him personally, of course, but in Healing Camp he was talking about how he doesn't have friends and that he's really lonely (almost to the point of depression). 1N2D will give him some camaraderie that will hopefully be sincere.

Sometimes it is better to maintain a distance and preserve the mystery and allure of favourite actors. I know that actors, at least the good ones, are supposed to be like chameleons, easily donning and shedding the guises of various characters, but somehow I feel that once I've seen their real personality, it distracts me from fully immersing in their character in a drama...

Ahhh, why!? I'd actually love to see him attempt variety, even if it's a one off, but not 1n2d!! Because ultimately, even if he did suck at it, I'd want him to suck at it on a show which isn't already sucking. Did any of that even make any sense!? Lol either way, it should be interesting to see how he fares in this. Thanks for the news.

The risks just seem greater than any rewards he could get out of it. If you are going to ruin your image for the sake of variety, at least do it on a show were you'll get the most benefits from. It makes more sense to me to guest on RM a few times and see if it's a thing you want to do and/or are good at before being stuck on a stale variety show that is currently on life support. But that's just me.
Maybe S3 will surprise everyone though.

For those worried that LJK will lose his "cool" image if he joins 1N2D:
YES. He will lose his coolness.
See FO eps 48-49. You can see he wanted to be cool, since he has martial arts training and stuff, but... he ends up ranking the same with Jaesuk and Jong Shin during the games. Haha
He's still adorable though. :)

Yes, he was hysterical on Family Outing. To be fair, I wasn't familiar with him before watching that but I was pleasantly surprised. He was so strange, really earnest but in a comedic sort of way. I actually wanted him to be Chunhee's replacement when he was leaving because he seemed to be a great fit for the show but it wasn't to be.

My prince, in variety? As a regular? I'm with JB and kakashi, he does have a rather melancholic vibe about him when he's not acting, particularly post-army. It almost feels like he feels trapped by his own fame, I mean what other conclusion can you draw when the poor guy says that pre-army, he didn't even feel comfortable going out to get a drink because it might create a scandal.
On the other hand, he does have a tendency to go 150% all-in on his roles, to the point of overdoing it if he's not restrained, so if he brings that to 1N2D (still think Running Man would be a better fit though), it could be interesting.

I actually love celebs who give us a glimpse of their true nature by doing variety. I mean take So Ji Sub for example, I loved him on Infinity Challenge, but I also see why he wouldn't choose to continue making an appearance on variety shows - that one ep was enough to show a different side to him and for audiences to see him outside his comfort zone. I respect that.

I don't think she means "tarnish" in the sense of sully or malign as much as in the sense of "demolish a (presumably) carefully crafted public image". If you've been built up as "badass Joo Won" or "badass Lee Jun Ki" and then you instead become known to the universe via variety as a "man-child Joo Won", that may not be the trajectory you intended your career to go on. I personally now have a terrible time taking Kim Seung Woo seriously (even though I really liked him on 1N2D) and the same goes for Joo Won/Uhm Tae Woong to a certain degree.

I think LJK have a high probability of joining..since his career is kinda in a rut now, so it can be beneficial to him, no? but the bigger question is whose gonna lead the show now? there is no leader-type persona among the cast..really now..
I felt it by watching Kang Ho Dong innate leadership in the "cool kiz" show, I mean, even tho' the show can be a bit boring by only doin' sport all the time..but he can make jokes at times and relieve the pressure of the show to its cast, like Eun Ji Won said in Uhm Tae Woong win2 ep, he is that big speaker that allows the cast to relax while filming and show them their real personality and tight bromance and not being an annoying try hard all the time, that's the secret to their almost 6 years working together to make an epic show like the 1st season..IMO, 1n2d 1st season has high influential in k-show..there's a lot of TV show out there that is like the extension from 1n2d like cool kiz, Appa oddiga and even real men..if you watch from the beginning then you guys would know what I meant really...:)
I know some people don't like his "loudness" among other things..but I say! to each his own...for me, now the cool kiz show is one of my fav' show becoz' of him..its been a while since 1n2d season 1...and I am happy about it...
IMO, a good casting would be for nothing if there's no one to glue them together and really lead the show like Yoo Jae Suk or Kang Ho Dong...but I approve of the new pd-old pd-Yoo pd since he has the exp unlike the previous 2 Pds..and he is doing well in cool kiz really...and with that I wish all the best to the new cast...nobody knows if anything will turn out exactly, whether its gonna be epic or not...1n2d was like that in the beginning, so I say why now would be any different, we would never know..:)

Are you serious? After Arang & Two Weeks his career is actually doing well and he won 2 Best Actor Awards already this year and the year haven't even ended yet & more awards shows is to come. He doesn't need 1N2D at all it is the show who needed him, that is why a lot of his fans (almost all) are against this casting. Why would you even think his career is not doing well despite Two Weeks receiving lots of awards lately and him beating actors like So Ji Sub (Master's Sun), Jo In Sung (TWTWB), Joo Won (Good Doctor) etc. in the Best Actor category? And also winning Seoul International Awards were winners were determine solely by votes which means that lots of people love him since he was the one they voted for.

He's become even better as an actor post-military service - he put in a great performance in Arang and a really good one in Two Weeks, even if they didn't bring in the ratings he was well-received.

Wow, I honestly had no idea knowing an actor's real personality could distract one's image that much. I know Choi Min-sik has a bubbly and humourous personality but I've never once thought "This guy is actually a very nice dude and he loves SNSD!" when I watch his films. Same goes to Joo Won, Joo Sanguk, Hwang Jungmin and so on. (I have only seen 2 Taewoong's films so I can't say much but yeah)
I like Lee Junki, especially after Two Weeks, but no matter what his choice is, it doesn't matter much to me. Of course I hope he joins (why not, I get to see him once every week) but LJK's fans don't seem to want him to join.. So..

I'm already guessing he won't accept this. Lee Jun Ki doesn't even normally do guesting in variety shows and they ask him to be a REGULAR?! I feel like they just throw in his name and ask him to join even if they know he won't accept it to have people talk about 1N2D or to get them more thrilled & excited. If they ask him to guest in the Season 3 pilot episode he will probably accept it but to be a regular member? I highly doubt he will ever accept.
I know Lee Jun Ki could be funny at times since i did see him in Family Outing & other variety guesting before but he is more of a serious actor, and i'd rather him focus on that. A little guesting here and there would be good though.

I'll never understand the tendency for Korean production companies and these big networks to do things so last minute, from casting to shoots, if the air date is so soon. December 1 isn't that far off. Like you said, Javabeans, Tick Tock.
As for Lee Jun-ki, I am equally torn about his joining. Part of me wants him to join, because I can never have enough Lee Jun-ki, and part of me doesn't want him to join because it may impact how I see him in dramas. I don't want that to happen. And yet, I want him to join so badly! Also, there's another part of me that wants the cast to be finalized, so they don't screw anything up. But why do they need another person? Isn't five enough?

It is the trend now for actors to go on variety e.g. Running Man, I live alone (with Seo In Guk before he left) It will be good for his career

When I first saw the news I wondered whether the Production is playing joke on people.....
Because Lee Jun-Ki and variety are total strangers....
I agree with javabeans...
Maybe I'll have to start watching the show again......
Curious curious......
Hope it all goes well....

ANiya, Lee jun ki has joined family outing SBS once. He is really funny. Can be babo too. Hahaha, this will be fun. I wanted shinee minho to join. I's SHINee fan, but SHINee dongseng works so hard already this year. Glad too he turned down the offer. JJ Young, is also really funny, I watched him in We Got Married. Looking forward for this coming season 1N2D....

While they are busy casting new members, I'm crying here, missing Sung Sikyung in that show. :(

Oh please, I hope Jun-ki doesn't catch the bait of a black hole.
And Jeong Joon-yeong & Defconn should do what Minho & John park did; after all, the Jeong Joon-yeong is still busy with his "We Got Married" stint; and I don't see Connie being up to this, he's better off with Donnie & Hoonie having fun at "Weekly Idol" than watch this bore-trap.
