Foreigner cast stars in tvN variety show Island Village Teachers

Cable station tvN premiered a new variety program this week called Island Village Teachers, and it’s noteworthy for featuring entirely foreigners as the main cast, some of whom are probably already familiar to fans of Korean entertainment. Described by some as a mix of travel-reality programs Dad! Where Are We Going? and 1 Night 2 Days, the show places the four members on an island village for a five-day stay, living with locals and teaching grade-school children.

It was met with positive reviews, though not terribly high ratings; 0.49% is on the low side, though perhaps excusable for a cable debut with no big stars. And it’s true that we’ve been spoiled with tvN hits raising the bar and expectations (e.g., Grandpas Over Flowers’ 7.4% peak, or the Answer Me franchise’s ever-climbing ratings), although those are the outliers, not the norm.

The cast:

  • Sam Hammington, a 36-year-old from Australia, is already known and well-liked for his appearance on army-themed variety-docu show Real Men.
  • Brad (aka Bradley Ray Moore), is a 29-year-old American who’s one-third of the chart-topping rock band Busker Busker.
  • Abigail Alderete, 26, is from Paraguay and came to Korea in 2005 to study abroad. She was a panelist on 2007’s foreigner variety program Global Talk Show (aka Chat with Beauties, aka Misuda).
  • Sam Ochiri Okyere is a 24-year-old from Ghana.

Clockwise from top left: Sam H., Abigail, Sam O., Brad

Island Village Teachers was initially tested as a pilot in September, and earned a place as a regular program due to its warm reception. The show features some variety mainstays (fish out of water, overnight trips), but is presented more as a fun, heartwarming program than a “Muahaha, suffer for my enjoyment” kind. (Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter. Noonas Over Flowers, here we come!)

Its PD, Kim Jong-hoon, even admitted to finding the shift tricky: “As a variety producer, the very attempt at making a ‘nice program’ is awkward. But this program gave me a chance to reflect, and I thought it wouldn’t be bad to try doing things backwards once.” He added that it was the first time he worked on a show with such a lack of negative comments and feedback, and hopes it’ll have lasting power.

On the show’s conception: “At first, our initial intention was to feature foreigners traveling the country in a simple foodie program. But then I thought of what foreigners are the best at doing in Korea, and it was teaching their native language. Then I thought of where in Korea those educational resources are most lacking, and came upon island villages.”

As the mat-hyung of the group, Sam Hammington admitted to feeling the burden of being eldest, when he’s previously been among the youngest. “Because I had great variety sunbaes who were skilled in leading the way, I could follow along. So I felt some pressure this time about screentime or directing the situations—would that bit make it to air, and would that situation be set up properly? I worried a lot whether I would be able to draw out those things. But I worried unduly. Sam O. really has an excellent variety sense—he’s a friend who could step on and overtake me at any moment. [Laughs].” He added, “Initially I was going to go for the big eater [personality], but because of Sam Okyere I lost that title.”

Brad said that his Korean is still clumsy so he speaks in English, which at least is helpful in teaching English. Sam H. said of Brad, “His Korean language skills are still a bit lacking, but he’s an extremely funny guy.”

Abigail explained how the island felt completely different to the competitive spirit of living in a city. “The people here live in nature, living with what they have, as it is. They seem innocent and comfortable. There must be difficulties in living on an island without certain culture or facilities, but it was nice to see that there was a freedom to that. We went there to work, but it feels like we were taking a break.”

There is apparently a Sam O.–Abigail loveline in the mix, and Abigail said, “At first, he seemed like just a cute, kind of offbeat younger brother. But looking at him more, it was cool to see a man eating a lot, and he tells funny stories. Sam keeps asking me to marry him, but once shooting finishes he doesn’t say that to me personally. I suspect it may just be a concept. I don’t know if I believe him.” Apparently Sam smiled to hear that, and PD Kim added, “To my eyes, I think Sam’s a bad boy.”

Island Village Teachers premiered on November 19 and airs on Tuesday nights.

Oh my goodness, that show sounds so cuuuuute! I love the concept! My husband and I daydream about teaching English abroad sometimes, and I love seeing the different sides of countries and cultures. What a great idea! Plus their foreigner cast seems pretty awesome (from what I've seen, though I haven't heard of Abigail before)!

Hopefully Javabeans sees this.
It's Okyere not Ochiri :)

I get worried sometimes about these people...because foreigners often come to Korea with a sense of entitlement, lack of knowledge of Korea's culture and history, and always try to compare Korean culture to their own Western "correct" culture. It's disconcerting how ethnocentric a lot of foreigners are. I am all for foreigners visiting, but saying things like "Oh they are so innocent and blabla" is not respectful ...it's patronizing.

Also, already familiar with Brad and Sam Hammington. Sounds cute but idk when I would find the time to watch it tbh. I can never keep up with variety and too many dramas these days

So cute!!! Loved the concept, as a K Culture & J Culture fan, always had the dream to teach English in Korea or Japan... kinda annoy at myself for never had the guts to take the plunge or the foresight to plan it and see thru it...

Hope the cast get to taste local cultures and we get lots of hilarious scenes and hope the island kids can exchange some heart warming memories with them teachers too!

It's an interesting concept and I would love to watch. Sounds cute! I recognize Abigail from other things.

I think I've seen Sam O. on Hello Counselor before? He was there to talk about racism in Korea, which surprised me. The Korean people always seem so friendly and open, but maybe that's just certain people? What I know is from dramas and such. So I could be wrong.

There's racism everywhere (and in Asia, white are treated better than blacks, but that's pretty much the norm everywhere - even in Africa).

Haha, and I thought I was the only weird one too when I found myself in Korean school a few years ago. It's not often you meet kindred spirits.

0

Hello avonmarissa,
Nice to "meet you!" Do you (or did you) live in Korea? I love how your family mixes cultures (and foods), eating African fufu with Korean bean paste soup. That's awesome, and creative! Have you seen the show? If you have, did you like it?

0

I love this (the concept of the show), and it is nice to see a fellow African being a member of the cast :-). And yeah, Sam (the Ghanaian), looks quite hot! And if he is funny, that's even better. I wonder how long he has been in Korea?

Hello Marteki,

And thank you for that info. 5 years huh? Wow!!! So he went to Korea when he was 19. I wonder what took him there? Good for him though, he is getting to experience something really different and from the comments here about him, he seems to have adjusted well to life in Korea. I would like to check this show out.

By the way, why is avomarissa?

Hi Ivoire,
I finished the 5th episode yesterday. You should check it out. It is a nice show. Where in the world are you? I'm in Vancouver BC

Hi Marteki,

Good to hear from you again! :-) I live in Northern CA, close to Davis and Sacramento. I just saw that I made a mistake. I meant to say, "who is avomarissa?" and not, "why is avomarissa?" Sorry about that.
I also saw that avomarissa "showed up." I have cousins who live in Montreal, I hope to visit Canada one day (hopefully soon). Where did you watch the episodes of the show, please? Were they subbed in English? Could you please post the link in your response? I would appreciate that. Thank you! Are you Ghanaian as well?

0

Hello Ivoire, I live in Houston, Texas. My first trip to Korea hopefully will be in the coming year. I was introduced to Korean culture by a Vietnamese friend about 6 years ago and the rest is history, haha. Korean drama, history, culture, I'm all in, haha.

0

Forgot to add, I saw the first episode on the "on demand" link posted earlier. It is unsubbed though. Very funny, especially the two Sams. Both have a big appetite, especially Ghana Sam. Brad had me cracking up trying to mix Korean and English. I am going to check out the second episode soon. Has anybody else started watching?

0

Hi Avonmarissa and Ivoire,
I feel kinda weird keeping this thread going. I'd love to keep in touch, we should relocate lol its a rather odd way, but here's my email [email protected]

yes I'm from Ghana. I speak Korean so I just watched all the episodes raw. I'm going to visit in the coming year too! :). hope to hear from you.

Marteki,
Sooo good to hear from you :-)! I am sending you an email soon. avonmarissa, could I stay in touch with you as well? Please, let me know through Marteki, when you email him. This is sooooo cool!!!!! I am glad we connected here :-)

Sounds like a really fun cast. I think I'd enjoy them all, but I'm especially interested in watching Brad 'cause I love Busker Busker. BTW, if anyone wants to read about the very unlikely set of circumstances that led to Brad being the most famous white dude in Korea, check this out: http://noisey.vice.com/blog/great-white-hope-how-bradley-ray-moore-accidentally-conquered-k-pop. It must be odd to be so famous in Korea that nearly everyone recognizes you, and at the same time, a "nobody" in your own country.

Thanks for that link -- I didn't know how invasive the Entertainment companies are in Kpop. It makes sense of course, that they would want you in servitude for many years, but maybe when you read or see videos of certain kpop idols making mistakes maybe they are really just rebelling a bit from the system that keeps them in chains for up to 10 years.

A really eye-opening read there, probably not totally unlike reality shows in the US but still, there seems to be a lot going behind the scenes that many never get to hear about!

Hey I do remember Abigail from the "Chitchat with the beautiful ladies" show. She looks a bit older and chubbier than then, in a weight-obsessed culture. Hopefully she has not had to deal with the same kind of "sollicitations" as Bianca's claims. One can still be in denial, right?

This show could be entertaining, indeed. Thank you for the article, javabeans.

Ooh! I briefly heard about this somewhere, but I'm glad that Dramabeans wrote about it! I'm excited to watch this. Usually I cringe at watching things about foreigners in Korea because SOMETIMES it can come off as really awkward or painting all foreigners in a particular light.

Also, I'm happy to see a black person in the cast. It's different than most shows I happen to see.

And for those that's acting, Sam was with his friend on Hello Counselor as well as in some skits on Gag Concert.
