Basketball cut down to 18 episodes

Okay, so we have some confusing news about tvN’s period sports drama Basketball, which is getting cut down from its initial order of 24 episodes to 18. Producers insist that it has nothing to do with its ratings (and relatively low buzz factor), but rather because they have decided that they are not equipped to tell the story they want to tell in that amount of time and therefore will not tell it.

Basketball was originally touted as a story of hope as its poor hero finds his future in basketball, joins the national team, and plays on the historic 1948 Olympic team (that advanced to the quarterfinals) in Korea’s only single team before the division into North and South. The producers initially planned to spend the first 18 episodes in the Occupation years, and then cover the liberation years beginning with Episode 19, followed by the division of the peninsula. Only recently did they realize that six episodes wasn’t enough to get the story out, and they decided to therefore end the show earlier than planned and then leave the door open for a Season 2, where they would devote the entire time to those later years.

Officially the explanation is that they would rather do the best with a manageable load than to bite off more than they can chew and produce subpar episodes, preferring to take more time to deal with those stories. Which is great if they can actually get a second season, only you’ll have to forgive me for being skeptical — this is not a show that’s generating a ton of excitement or high ratings, despite being recognized as historically accurate and well-researched, and I can’t imagine there being a push to make a whole new season of it.

While I’ve been watching and generally liking the drama, I have to say it’s not the most scintillating hour of television, and my enjoyment is as much for what I hope it to be as it is for what it actually is. Much of my anticipation was for those later years, but if they’re not even going to cover anything after 1945 — that’s Korea’s independence, the North-South division, and the Olympics — well, my excitement just left the building.

Basketball airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on tvN, and will now end with Episode 18 on December 17.

Hmmmm. OK. I don't watch the show & it's certainly not the one which does the buzz. Could it be that the topic is sensitive? Everything about Korean/Japanese conflicts seems to be considered as a minefield these days (what with the cold diplomatic relations between the 2 countries).

Often these shows about the Korean/Japanese conflicts do generate a stable range (teens, sometimes 20s), but this is 1. a cable drama 2. lot's of new actors 3. I don't find the acting of the women (main lead particularly) compelling.

jabbers... I like this article because it did clarify a few things for me. I loved this drama, but I didn't like the ending. It was too abrupt. I'm glad to hear that there is at least a chance of a second season. I learned a lot of history from it. Everything in this was so real. The clothing, the buildings, the automobiles, and the history.
the people.. I had no idea that the occupiers treated the Koreans so terrible. I wanted to at least see the bomb go off and kill some of the bad guys. It is worth watching a second time. At least the next time I know what to expect. All the actors were extremely good, especially the male and female leads, as well as the mother of the male lead.

I have to admit, I was anticipating the show and then dropped it because it didn't really have the wow factor (I blame that on the lacking lead romance especially the main girl). I also didn't have the time for it so I can't judge I guess :@

if you watched it for five minutes and decided it was not worth your valuable time, then you can make a judgment. I'm thinking of making the same over the fourth ( and my last) installement of Heirs. It is going to have to get much better for me to spend an hour reading subtitles - no matter how much i like the lead couple AND the mothers.
thanks :)

Bail on Heirs now. Don't even wait*.

*Full disclosure, I can't find it in myself to stop, but only because it's like a horrible car wreck I can't look away from.

There shall be no older Byeo-ri/Chi-ho pairing then? Am I hearing HeadsNo2 sobbing in the corner?

I thought that was going to happen, but then she dropped a bombshell that she's 14?? I sensed she was lying.

Her character - not the actress - is indeed only 14 at the beginning of the drama. However since it was supposed to span over several decades, she would have been much older by its end and a strong candidate for Chi-Ho's affection.

No!!!!! That was the one true pairing I was really looking forward to. I wish she was older in the show because she can really banter with Chi-ho.

I think that there is still hope. She should be of age by the end of the Japanese occupation, right? Lol!

Let's hope so... that or they do the whole... "oops I said I was 14 but I was lying and I'm really older than that" storyline! Ha.

It has nothing to do with the ratings? Please. I have more respect for JTBC for being honest with End of the World although I was really disappointed back then.

Good luck getting Season 2.

I gave up in the middle of episode three. The story had potential, but I thought the execution was lacking.

javabeans ~

Thanks for the update. It's too bad, the story itself isn't bad. The casting of the female lead is suspect, however, the show was ok. We'll see what happens.

I know this is totally off topic (sorry) but thank you John for the heads-up! I've been waiting for months!!

Regarding this show, Javabeans' words are perfect for what I'm feeling: "my enjoyment is as much for what I hope it to be as it is for what it actually is". Indeed. I wanted to love this show SO. MUCH. and I'm not feeling it at all. Now that they've said the independence years will be cut off............................................. I guess I'll continue watching for the sake of it, but I'm not gonna say I'm too excited boooo

Oh, what...this is strange. They could have probably extended it but they shortened it instead...hrmm...

I still want to watch it, though. We'll just have to see how it all pans out.

Is the actress playing the female lead bad or is it the character herself?

I believe this is her very first drama so it's hard to tell because the character is confusing, at least IMO (she's all over the place) but then sometimes the acting can be the reason. But again, I personally can't tell since there is no previous acting references.

I am surprised that it is being cut short because even though yeah, I am finding it boring now...I just thought that they would keep the original episode number and that there probably wouldn't be an extension. Not that it would cut down 6 episodes- which is a lot. I don't know what to believe in terms of why this is being done, but I don't know if I would watch a second season. It sucks cause I was really, really looking forward to this drama when I first heard about it and I did like the first couple of episodes. Now though, it is rather bleak and I even watched the first couple of episodes again and that non-oomph tone was still there ,but I guess I brushed it aside cause I was looking forward to everything. *sigh*

I think the entire cast is terrific. She's doing a great job in my eyes.

Her character is so superficial and nonsensical that I can really tell you whether the actress is good or not: she simply has very little material to work on.

she's not bad by any means. it's really more of a dissatisfaction with the character that makes it hard to like her.

Her acting is bad. Her delivery lines is very modern. Can't she at least trying.

Yeah, seriously. I thought that was the main point- the dealings after 1945 and going to the Olympics. I am interested in what happened before too, but since that is what is happening in the episodes now...I just wonder how much better can a season two be?

Aww, what??? I watched the first two episodes when it first premiered and kept meaning to go back to it but I just feel like I'm watching /so much/ these days (never thought this day would come lol). But anyway, I'm sad now because the Olympics was the reason I was intrigued by it to begin with.

I hope season 2 happens because i was also excited for the story because i wanted to the hero end up joining the olympic team and what happens after 1945.

Now the story journey, the hero's journey might cut short and never see a season.

I have seen 5 eps so far and its very exciting drama to watch when its about the entertaining basketball games, the underdog story of the hero. The trouble is the main romance, the second lead, the female lead actors are not good enough for the character so far. The guy playing Kang San is atleast compelling, believable as the hero.

I haven't seen any of the episodes or read the recaps after episode 1. I love the sport itself, but the story didn't grip me like I wanted it too. I think this could be a good move for the show, but I wonder if they'll get a second season.

Also, should I continue with the show or not?

do ji han is the best actor..in my opinion..and the girl who plays byeori is really convincible..chi ho is doing pretty well as the "villain" but i'm having problems with lee eliya's character...if shinyoung wasn't so confusing, i think the actress would receive more positive feedback...

i am still watching though. and it's for do ji han..he's doing really well portraying his character and his conflicting emotions..and geez, the mother/son action is adorable.

Oh, that's... hum.. wait. Ok, I don't like this.
And it seems like I'm the only one enjoying the drama. I'm no newbie to the historical facts or rules of the game (the basketball, I mean), so I can say I was truly engrossed by our hero's jorney.

I agree about the lack of chemistry and the nonsensical heroine (what's her problem anyway? Acting? Is it the writing? Both?), but at least San and Chi-ho jorneys seems to be something to wait for.

The CGI is rubbish though.

I think the female lead character is kinda not written with enough depth, its like her existence is juz to romance the guys, other than that she played no part in the development of the story. I think the actress is not that bad but since she is a newbie, maybe she cant express the character well enough if the writer doesn't put some depth to guide her

it's a good drama, eventhough it has not much viewers. please let byeo ri grow up to be an adult woman so she can stay by chi ho's side. at least... it will make me happy despite the cut down.

I'm enjoying the show and my history geek self can't help but feel a bit disappointed because now I won't get to see the after 1945 bits.

What's her face's acting doesn't bother me as much as the beauty mark on her lip does. It's distracting. So thanks to that, I tend to ignore pay less attention to her.

Kang San and Chi Ho are enough for me.

Hello! First time poster here. I'm bummed by this news. I'm really enjoying this drama and all the actors, including the lead actress whom I see as a sheltered and slightly naive young woman who has a willowy, starry-eyed way about her. As my knowledge of Korean basketball (for that matter, basketball in general) and the post WW-II era in Korea is rudimentary, I was looking forward to seeing this story progress to the '48 Olympics.

I would have thought a story about the first, and only, time Korea competed as a unified and independent country would interest the general public, although the generic title didn't help. Here's to a Season 2.

The title of the drama is actually interesting in Korean, because it's a phonetic rendering of the English word that's true to '40s pronunciation. It's definitely not the word used these days for basketball.
