Answer Me 1994: Episode 6

Romance is afoot! The pendulum swings in Chilbongie’s favor today, but given that we’re only at 6 of 20 episodes, I fully expect that pendulum to swing back (and forth, and back, and forth) a few times yet. The show does answer one big question today… but as usual, raises a lot more new ones.

SONG OF THE DAY

EPISODE 6: “Introduction to Gift-Giving”

2013. Na-jung makes a cup of coffee and Chilbongie takes it from her naturally, like this is a familiar occurrence. A hint, or a red herring? (At this point, I’d argue that everything is a red herring.) He and Na-jung sit in the kitchen while the rest of the gang pokes fun at the wedding video.

Chilbongie wonders what Teenage Mystery Boy is doing out so late, and chides Na-jung not to swear so much. She reminds him that he used to like it, and he grumps that twenty years ago he didn’t know any better.

We cut to said teenager (nicknamed—of course he has a nickname—Sooksookie), and he’s on the phone with Mom, telling her not to nag. Note that we did not see Na-jung on the phone so his parentage is still a question mark, although his (girl)friend makes a comment about his father being famous.

Back to 1994. Chilbongie plays catch with Garbage, giving him tips on his throwing technique, and Dad joins them on his way home. Chilbongie compliments Garbage for throwing the best among all the non-players he’s known, which prompts Dad to ask, “What about me?”

Ha, so then Dad hunkers down and orders Chilbongie to throw him a hard pitch, no holding back, threatening to ban him from the house if he disobeys. Chilbongie’s loath to go all-out and hesitates, but at Dad’s heckling he lets one fly. Upon making the catch, Dad complains that he won’t get anywhere with such wimpy pitches… then turns around and gingerly walks away, his hand immobilized. Heh.

But what is that look on Garbage’s face as he regards Chilbongie? Sadness? Jealousy? Hm, do you see him as a rival after all?

Dad offers Chilbongie a glove as a gift so he can practice more, and that segues into our title for the day: “Introduction to Gift-Giving.” (Written to mimic the title of that first-love-in-college-in-the-’90s film Introduction to Architecture.)

Na-jung’s back starts acting up again, and Chilbongie offers her the use of his special medical belt. His team doctor massages his back when it gets sore, and she wishes she had such services available right now… then looks up at Chilbongie with hopeful, pained eyes. I’m pretty sure her slow, dramatic collapse to the floor is as much about guilting him into it as it is about real pain, and he hurriedly agrees to help.

So Na-jung lies down on the floor as Chilbongie moves her legs in slow stretching exercises. One pose has him pushing her bent knees against her chest, which brings him directly on top of her… and a flicker of awareness flits between them as they both hastily look away. Gulp. Nervous chatter.

He moves on to the last exercise, his gaze landing on the hip right in front of his eyes… and she farts in his face. Hahaha. That had me laughing out loud. They both pause for a moment, but he just moves on to the other side like nothing happened, all nice and pro-like. And then she farts again. Okay, I laughed for a good minute.

In the parents’ room, Mom is cranky for no apparent reason, snapping at Dad to turn down the TV, change the channel, turn on the fan, turn off the TV, and so forth. Dad blows up at her nagging, and Mom blinks back tears, says sorry, and lies down for a nap. Dad hovers in sweet concern, then asks, “Is it… that time of the month?” She kicks him over. Yeah, he earned that one.

Dad retreats to the terrace, joining Garbage and complaining that Mom’s turned into a mood-swingy, hot-tempered person all of a sudden. Garbage wonders if it’s menopause and urges Dad to be nicer to her, as she may be susceptible to depression. Garbage uses Cha In-pyo as an example of the husbandly ideal—the drama of the moment is You In My Arms starring Cha and future real-life wife Shin Ae-ra, which is funny since he was also in the drama of the moment in Answer Me 1997 (Star In My Heart). What can ya do? Cha In-pyo was The Perfect Hero of the ’90s.

When Dad brings Mom a cold drink, she’s back to buoyant spirits, humming over the laundry. Outwardly he puts on his best supportive husband face, but inwardly he’s creeped out at her constant change of mood.

Garbage finds Na-jung outside and starts massaging her shoulders, which fills her with both giddiness and agonizing—such a relatable moment for any girl who’s ever nursed a crush on somebody close. He advises her to be nice to Mom while she’s feeling sensitive. When asked how he knew about her menopause, Garbage quips, “I understand women’s feelings amazingly well, you know. Can’t fool me.” (So he knows. Why is he feigning ignorance about her feelings?)

It’s a rough next morning for Mom, who keeps a smile on her face despite getting her feelings hurt several times in quick succession. Samcheonpo is upset that she forgot to wake him early, Binggeure uncharacteristically snaps at her for talking to his father about him on the phone (they have a strained relationship), Haitai’s hungover hometown buddies join in on breakfast with less than the appropriate amount of gratitude, and Yoon-jin asks Mom to stay out of her room after Mom had cheerily cleaned it yesterday.

Through it all, Na-jung notes her mother’s hurt feelings.

Na-jung’s voiceover: “We’ve all gotten friendlier, closer, more familiar. By the same degree, apologies have become less important and gratitude more hazy. And Mom has become taken for granted. The early summer of 1994 scratched at Mom cruelly. Mom was hurting.”

Na-jung barges in on Oppa to complain that he ate the special marshmallows her friend sent from Japan, which he denies emphatically. Then he motions her closer so he can tell her something, which sets her heart pounding. She leans in, all anticipation… and he spoils the story of the manhwa she’s reading. And after she’s gone, he pulls out the marshmallow stash he in fact did steal. Sometimes you are such an oppa, Oppa.

Haitai runs into Na-jung at school, and she waits (making piggy faces) while he calls his hometown girlfriend. We don’t hear her side of the conversation but its contents are clear: Based on Haitai’s responses, she’s upset that he’s not paying her enough attention.

He sighs to Na-jung about how every day is a trial, and how his girlfriend of three years doesn’t trust him and calls every day to check up on his doings. He asks what the right thing to do is, but while he’s caught up in his romance drama, Na-jung is fixated on her Pepero sticks and grumbling stomach. Haitai complains, “You have a talent, yunno. Even when you’re stuffing your face, your stomach can growl.” Hey, I also have that talent.

Binggeure finds himself playing go-between for Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin, who are still bickering. (He tells her to fix her hair-curtain, and she snaps at him to apologize for his face, lol. This ends with Samcheonpo approaching threateningly, then very nonthreateningly retreating while clutching his privates, since Yoon-jin is quite capable of self-defense.)

The two groups convene, and Haitai asks for everyone’s advice. It’s his girlfriend’s birthday on Friday, but because of exams he can’t visit home until Saturday. She told him not to bother coming on Saturday and got upset, which makes the boys wonder at this mystical language of women while the ladies wonder if he’s dumb to not understand. To clarify, Na-jung explains that the girlfriend wants an expression of his caring—the actual day is unimportant.

The boys can’t get past the question of Friday versus Saturday, though, so Na-jung explains with a fictional example: A couple moves into a new home. With doors closed the paint smell gives the woman a splitting headache, but opening the doors makes her cough up a storm. So the woman asks her man whether to open or close the door—and the correct response is for him to worry over her health. The boys, however, miss the point again and fixate on whether the door should be open or closed.

The girls roll their eyes, but Haitai swears that any normal person would answer his way, not hers. This turns into a bet, and we cut to later as the gang anxiously awaits Garbage’s response.

Garbage thinks, then decides, “You should open the door.” The boys are hilariously gratified.

Chilbongie walks in, and Yoon-jin poses the same question, saying that Na-jung’s room has just been painted. Chilbongie replies, “Hm, wouldn’t it be better to close the door?” LOL. The boys nod approvingly and declare that he’s a man.

Then Chilbongie turns to Na-jung, wondering, “But are you okay?” The girls smile, and Yoon-jin approvingly deems Seoul boys different from those countrified bumpkins.

Chilbongie assures them that he has no training today, but a cut to his baseball team shows that they’re at practice as usual. He’d used his mother’s wedding as an excuse, but the coaches belatedly realize he’s already used that one.

With Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo still at each other’s throats, the gang turns to trickery to effect reconciliation. They play a game where they draw numbered sticks, and the “king” gets to issue orders. That’s Binggeure, and with some cheating by the others, he calls Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo’s numbers and orders them to kiss.

Everyone giggles in anticipation, but Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo both grab drinks and chug, opting for the punishment rather than the order. Haha.

More rounds are played, the cheating continues to single out Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin every time, and they keep choosing to drink. Even when beer glasses are swapped for bowls and then tureens—dammit, no way they’re kissing. Chug chug.

Everybody gets drunker and drunker, to the point where they give up on the cheating. Two random numbers are called to kiss, which turn out to be Binggeure and… omo omo, OPPA?

Oppa decides he’d rather not drown himself in beer and turns to Binggeure, giving him an easy smack on the lips. Nobody bats a drunken eye, except maybe Binggeure, who’s freaking out a little on the inside—adorably, he clings to his sticks like they’re some lifeline and has to be ordered to give ’em up.

Last round. The guys note that Na-jung’s winking has started, which is the step right before biting. She sends Chilbongie these lopsided winks, and I absolutely love how he grins at her foolishly (not knowing about her dog habit).

The last kissy couple turns out to be Chilbongie and Na-jung. She’s nodding off as they speak, but Chilbongie looks awwwwfully invested in this round.

And then, he just goes in for the kiss.

Half the group is passed out and hardly anybody even registers the moment… until we pan over to Oppa, watching with this look on his face. He still wears that look a bit later as he watches Na-jung sleep, while over at the baseball field, Chilbongie puts in his punishment for skipping practice, wearing a big ol’ smile on his face.

School lets out for summer vacation, and Haitai prepares a package to send home to his girlfriend. Oh man, all the ’90s trivia packed into this scene: the Zam song on the mix tape, the Walkman, Lee Young-ae-endorsed lipstick, Sac Sac orange drinks…

At home, Na-jung watches TV with Chilbongie, who spends the whole time looking at her. I could watch him watching her all day. Oppa comes home and watches with a hangdog expression, although Na-jung leaps up to see him and links arms right away. And then it’s Chilbongie’s turn to look left out as she follows Oppa to his room. Garbage changes right in front of her—more abs!—and she tries to play it cool.

Dad has taken Mom on a weekend getaway for a pick-me-up, but when they get home that night it’s clear the trip didn’t do much for her spirits. She spent the whole time shut in their room, and Garbage suggests a trip to the doctor.

Dad is hilariously terrible at preparing himself to face his menopausal wife, but the thing about him that I love is that he has a way of rising to the occasion. Sometimes clumsily, but always with heart.

So he doesn’t freak out when Mom sighs, “I’ve received my death sentence. God has seen me and told me to stop being a woman.” Instead, Dad just says that everyone gets older and that it’s all right. What’s the good in being young again? He says, “Every morning when I open my eyes, I’m amazed. You and I, we’ve lasted till now, living under one roof, lying under one blanket, living like this.”

It’s exactly the thing to make her smile, and also cry. And yes, me too. He muses, “Is it such a sad thing to hear the word menopause? In my eyes, you’re forever my woman.”

Na-jung resumes her narration: “In the early summer of 1994, Mom prepared to say farewell to the womanhood that she’d taken for granted for decades.”

The next morning, all is back to normal. But today, the family steps in to give the boarders what-for when they start in on Mom: Samcheonpo huffs at Mom for not ironing his shirt, and Dad huffs right back at him for expecting Mom to do so. Yoon-jin asks Mom about her blouse, and Dad snaps that she’d told Mom to stay out of her room. Haitai complains that the soup is salty, and Na-jung thwacks him on the head. And when Binggeure starts to complain that Mom talked to his family again, Garbage swoops in to shut him up. Aw, this family. Luff luff luff.

Garbage is off on a school trip to Japan, and after a brief attempt to hint at him to buy gifts by saying NOT to buy gifts, they make outright requests. Na-jung: “Cosmetics for me! If you don’t know what, just get the most expensive one!” Dad: “There’s a lot of luxury stuff in Shinjuku, don’t go there!” Wink-wink.

Garbage tells Mom he’s sorry he can’t be here today of all days, which makes Na-jung and Dad wonder what today is. Shrug.

Mom returns to a mountain of dirty dishes, her endless stream of unthanked toil confronting her yet again. She finds another note left for her, but today it’s a happy one: Haitai has written a happy birthday note that also apologizes for their immature behavior, saying that “Seoul Mom” is their one source of comfort in this strange city.

He supposes they’ll hurt her feelings more in the future too, in which case he gives her free rein to think of them as her own kids and beat some sense into them. The note comes with a gift from Haitai, Samcheonpo, and Yoon-jin (who has rescinded her Do Not Enter request): a gold ring that brings tears to Mom’s eyes.

Na-jung: “All relationships grow more familiar and eventually get taken for granted. The strongest power of a gift is its ability to take that familiar and expected relationship and infuse it with excitement and gratitude once again. Through picking out a gift and writing the card card and considering that person, that person becomes new again. And those feelings are certain to be conveyed.”

Haitai gets a large package in the mail from his Suncheon girlfriend, and opens it with anticipation… only to find coupley items from their relationship, now returned to him. This includes her half of their couple ring set, while his is still on his finger.

“But if that familiar and expected relationship breaks down, now gifts or belated efforts become meaningless. Like a neglected orchid left to wither in the corner of a balcony, to whom belated water or care is pointless. The gift must be given and feelings conveyed before you wither, before you grow indifferent to one another.”

It’s a sad, late lesson for Haitai, who perhaps only realizes now how he feels about the girlfriend he’d underappreciated.

Mom goes in for her doctor’s appointment, but the news is quite different than the one expected: She’s pregnant. (I knew it!) (Teenaged boy is Na-jung’s brother!)

“There’s no fun in receiving a gift that you know about beforehand. The surprise is the lifeblood of giving gifts. The gift that flies in with uncanny timing is therefore even more moving. Even without a sender’s name or address, we knew who sent that gift.”

Mom and Dad walk out of the doctor’s office floating on clouds, and Dad decides that he will start dyeing his graying hair after all, despite resisting suggestions all episode long.

Back to 2013: Teenaged Sooksookie talks on the phone again with his naggy mother, whose voice we now confirm is Mom’s. He heads back home—he lives with Na-jung and her husband—and gets nagged at by all his uncles. Mom orders Sooksookie to hand the phone over to Na-jung’s husband, and he holds out the phone… to a room full of guys, narrowing down our choice NOT ONE BIT.

Back to 1994. The family looks blank-faced at the gifts Garbage brought back from his trip. The makeup was expensive, but… kinda tacky?

On the other hand, Chilbongie gets a much more receptive reaction for his tasteful gift, Chanel No. 5. Dad’s a little sniffy at being left out until Chilbongie sneaks him his own gift, a bottle of fancy liquor that has Dad nearly in tears. He says he’d love to marry Na-jung off to Chilbongie, and Chilbongie quips only half in jest, “I’d love that myself!”

Na-jung sprays herself with No. 5 that night, muttering that Garbage could stand to pick up a clue or two… until she sees an extra gift waiting for her. It’s the manhwa book she’d been looking for (that he’d spoiled) and a bag of marshmallows (sold in Japan but not Korea). Awwww.

It’s World Cup day, which means that the household gets up at an ungodly hour to catch the U.S.-Spain game. (Adorably, everyone treats pregnant Mom like she’s both a queen and a fragile porcelain doll, which warms my heart.)

As everyone gathers bleary-eyed in front of the television, Na-jung thinks:

“Present. In English, it has two meanings: a gift, and also the current moment. It may be that the most precious gift to us is the present, the time in front of us now. True, we may always be bickering with each other, but we leaned on each other and were happy together. 1994 was like a gift to us. And exactly eight years later, an unbelievable gift came to Korea—of all days, on that day.”

We fade in on 2002, at the wedding of Na-jung and her groom, Kim Jae-joon. Bride Na-jung wonders where everybody’s gone, only to hear that they’re all busy watching the game—once again, between the U.S. and Spain.

She complains to her bridegroom that she just knew they should’ve waited till after the World Cup, and (as expected) we only get to see a bit of his chin. (I’m sure that’ll have everyone rewinding to examine whose chin it resembles. But you know, I’d bet a chunk of change that the groom here is a stand-in, just to confuse us even more.)

The groom’s face remains predictably out of view as all the wedding-goers cheer the game results, which clinch South Korea’s place in the quarterfinals.

(And… ohmayah, is that the Neukkim theme song I hear playing over next week’s preview? I may not survive this.)

COMMENTS

Aw, I love that the teenage kid is Na-jung’s brother. It was a pretty clear possibility from the outset so not a surprise, but the reveal was worked into the 1994 plotline in a really lovely way; I love the way Mom gets her moment to be her own person and deal with her own identity crisis, when most of the time she’s so busy mom-ing the cast of youngun’s that you forget she has her whole inner life too.

That’s something this series does particularly well, and in fact I think it does that better than its predecessor. It’s true that 1997 did do a solid job of giving each friend a moment to shine, but that drama was more about its central romance and love triangle. This series is less about a single central through line, and more about the way all these lives at the boardinghouse weave together, and I really enjoy that. That is a way in which slice-of-life storytelling really works, because there’s a central force holding the vignettes together even when that force isn’t necessarily a plotline. The framework of the boardinghouse provides enough structure to become something of a narrative device in itself.

So in that way, a diminished cohesion in the story is not necessarily a loss for the series. It’s part of the character of the show, and I am fine with that. I do think that there are losses, though, and that’s mostly to do with the editing, which I think actually takes energy away from the storytelling. But I’ve said my piece on that.

A random though I had while watching this episode is how much I enjoy that Go Ara always seems to be acting, even when she’s just in the background. There are moments where the script doesn’t mention her, when she’s sitting around listening while a few other characters get to carry the dialogue, but she’s completely there in that moment, as though she’s really Na-jung living out her life regardless of which camera has her in its sights. It’s a small detail but one I appreciate (often with greener actors, you see them just hanging back waiting for their line, their one moment to turn it on).

Also: Dad gets famous? I’m guessing he must get famous as a baseball coach; apparently he’s a household name in the present day.

Today’s episode seem to indicate that Garbage is aware of Na-jung’s feelings (though it hasn’t confirmed whether he believed her confession or not), and that perhaps he has feelings back. Previously, I’d been wondering what possible motivations Garbage could have for playing ignorant, and supposed that the likeliest answer is that he didn’t want to actively reject her. Which would suggest that he didn’t feel the same way, but loved her too much as friend-sister to change their relationship.

But after seeing the way he looks askance at Chilbongie, I’m wondering all over again, because he sure does look bummed at the possibility of romance brewing on that front. And why would he push her away if he likes her, and then look sad and moony over not getting to have her? Puzzles, puzzles.

As for the husband: I can’t figure out which guy it is, but at this point I think the series is clever enough to purposely jerk our chains. I personally still lean toward Chilbongie (especially since it looks like Na-jung is starting to become aware of him), but would be unsurprised if things suddenly took a turn in the other direction. There are some honest clues hidden in the mix, but I do think most of them are meant to be ambiguous and double-edged, and interpreted in more than one way. This is not a case where all the facts are laid in there and a careful viewer will be able to figure it out—this is a case where the producers are purposely messing with us.

So I’m going to sit back and not try to parse the details, and just accept them as they come. Because you can’t outsmart a show that’s deliberately working to throw you off the scent and has the luxury of changing its mind at any point without us being any the wiser.

I am definitely on the Trash & Na Jung ship, and really hope that they're end game. In my mind, Trash is unaware of Na Jung's feelings, even though he is secretly in love with her. I think the reason he doesn't pursue her is partially guilt - he feels that he is taking her brother's place, and it would be a 'betrayal' to his friend if he were to love his sister.

His comment in ep 6 that he understands women I think was supposed to be ironic, since he doesn't understand Na Jung, and also misunderstood what was wrong with Mom.

I think the interest that Chilbongie shows Na Jung will push him to accept his feelings, and there will be lots of drama and angst associated with that :3 Looking forward to it!

I completely agree with you. Trash is not aware of Na Jung's feelings, also I think he isn't pursuing her yet, because he is not still aware of his own feelings. He probably was thinking (while looking at her sleeping) after being kissed by Chilbongie, thinking what he felt, he is trying to crack his own feelings toward Na Jung.

i never thought i would say this but i might just have fallen in love with this more than reply 1997. and that's my fave drama of all time alongside school 2013. maybe it's been a while so it's not a fresh to me but this drama is giving me the kind of butterflies and tears that a drama hasn't given me for a while. personally i think it's chillbongie but i really want oppa to have a good chance with her. they have amazing chemistry too, and he knows her like the back of his hand. like no words need to be said and he'll just know. that's hard to find. and maybe that kind of connection would be best kept platonic but the romantic in me wants him to really try go down fighting.

but chilbong is try to know her, try to understand her because he likes her

best friend and lover is different, na-jung just can't see it because she only knows oppa until now,
well i just can't decide actually

As many of you I appreciatte Dramabeans recaps soo much! it's like the last link to fully appreciate an episode.

Chilbong has the looks no doubt and I wouldn't mind a crush/short relationship with najung, as they are both experiencing first love... but in the end, the GEM of this drama is Oppa. he has to be IT.
Love how this drama manage to make everyone shine ♥

I totally agree with this. Chilbongi and Na Jung are the same age and just learning about what love feels like, so an innocent first-love relationship would be cute and can always be treasured in memories. But the writers have revealed so many layers to Oppa's character that it's not hard to see why Na Jung would be in love with him. If their kind of connection just goes to waste, when so many people never have that in a lifetime, I would be so heartbroken.

You guys are lucky to pick who do you like as I am still on the fence due to the awesome and sweet moments of Chilbongie and Trash. OMG, they are both sooo awesome and great... I went to NJ/Trash to Chilbongie/NJ ship back and forth. Not to mention, I am loving we get abs. I think we will see more abs next week too. OMO.. Did you all see the preview of next episode. As we see will see more awesome moments of both Trash and Chilbongie and Haitai with YJ. I can't not wait for it...

I don't know...you actually might be the lucky one here. As long as you are on the fence, you stand a chance to walk away happy no matter the outcome. For those of who have picked our man, do or die, there is either going to be major heartbreak or major payoff :)

Then again if we are all getting abs, maybe we actually ARE all happy.

I was laughing out loud a lot during this episode! I LOVE IT. And during the telephone scene, when the brother was handing the phone over to the husband, for a second I really thought they would reveal who the husband was but nooooooo lol.

I love all the relationships in this show. I especially love that we're starting to see more Yoo-jin now. I feel like before she was just in the background but now she's starting to show up more and talk more and I LOVE when she starts cursing and putting the boys in their place, it's amazing.

I am shipping so many people in this show and I'm just enjoying the ride. I almost don't even care who the husband is (ok, total lie) but I'm actually really content to just sit back and let it surprise me and not read too much into it. It's almost fun not knowing :)

I love this drama it makes me speechless in every end of episode. Though I have watched it, it's still fun to read the recap, laugh once again. Read the comment, and smile once again.
This drama is really gets me, just as Reply 1997. I don't ship anyone personally, but I love just EVERYONE.
I twitted yesterday about Bingguerae - Joon Hee's romantic line possibility, then I came here and it seems that I'm not alone. Aw... that would be so sweet.
Oppa - Na Jung - Chilbong: I still believe my first intuition, it's CB the husband. He falls for Na Jung first, just like Yoon Jae to Siwon. Oppa is someone who understands her and guards her, just like Tae Woong. He will end up with someone else. He knows about her lost of her brother, just as Tae woong does about her sister.

Yeah, the similarities with Reply 1997 are apparent. CB is the husband obviously.

But then if we are looking for an answer, is it worth watching this show?

I love it for its realistic (aka nostalgic) depiction of life in general.

If you're using 1997 as the model, then Oppa will be the husband. Oppa's closeness with Na Jung (lifelong bond, skinship, being argumentative) resembles Siwon-Yoon Jae. Also, no one understood Siwon more than Yoon Jae, just like no one understands Na Jung like Oppa. Chilbongie has more of a courteous, friendly relationship with Na Jung, like Tae Woong did with Siwon.

Whether 1994 will follow 1997 is another question...

I laughed when I watched that fart scene and again reading the recap of the fart scene.

I'm leaning toward Chilbongie being the groom but as you said, all the hints and nudges the show is giving us are just to throw us off and mess with us.

I'm definitely enjoying the series.

Thanks for the recap!

What I think is that another couple is staying temporarily at Nj's house in 2013; if am not mistaken, the other girl is married to one of the guys too;we figure out her husband and it's "game over!".

It would be game over if the husband of the other girl is Chilbongie or oppa. Oppa... impossible, Chilbongie... maybe. But I thought she was going to have a relationship with (damn, I never remember any name!) the guy with curly hair who is now single.

I don't agree with dramabeans here: "When asked how he knew about her menopause, Garbage quips, “I understand women’s feelings amazingly well, you know. Can’t fool me.” (So he knows. Why is he feigning ignorance about her feelings?)". Because obviously he is blunt about her feelings although he understands that Mother has a hard time. Also, when asked in the circle, if Trash would open or close the door, he answered close. So that just sums up that he is not aware of Na Jung's feelings. And for the record, I love this drama, I am torn between Trash or Pitcher as Na Jung's dream husband. They are both exquisite :)

100% agree. Dramabeans should probably watch this scene again: the whole point of this is to show how unaware Trash is of Na Jung's feelings.

we don't really know 100% whether he was aware or not of her feelings.
It could go either way. Personally I want him to be aware but feign ignorance (even if i'll be more mad at him if he doesn't have a dam good reason to), because it's just more in tune with his relationship to na jung.
He's so perceptive of her feelings, nevermind the fact that he's so absentminded with everything else in life. When it came to Na Jung, he was always that oppa that knew her inside out.
You could also argue there were many scenes in this episode that showed oppa being oblivious to women's feelings (make up, wrong answer to bet) so perhaps show is trying to prove that he genuinely was unaware of na jung's confession.
Pros and cons to both, but i'd like it if oppa-ya could just feel conflicted for a bit. Sigh. I think we'll get there eventually.

I have a soft spot for guys who look after their girls' parents like their own. And Oppa did that before when he gave them a ride and this episode when he hugged the mom .. Aww.. But CB was such a puppy with the parents in the recent episodes and calling them mom and dad.. Idk.. This drama is torturing me one episode at a time..

Except, did the league possibly suspend play during the World Cup that year?
I have no idea, but why would another sport want to compete with such a huge event?

For S. Korea, the World Cup used to be a huge but also very short-lived event as it was never possible to go beyond the first round. But then the 2002 World Cup happened. And baseball was a much bigger deal back then so I don't think the league would have suspended play...

Anyway, as I'm rooting for Team Oppa, that's the logic I'm going to pin my hopes on. ;-)

Seems like the groom doesn't have much interest. Hm. who does that remind us of?
I think the only one napping on mom's lap while everyone else is cheering for the world cup int he 1997 scene.
I could just be over-analyzing. But this show makes it so hard not to. We must know!

Here's my take: Chilbongie and Na Jung end up together in the 1994 timeline because they are obviously beginning to have those weird vibes when it's just the two of them. Oppa gets his chance at a later point when he finally figures out how to face his feelings for her.

I do think he is already in love with her because of the scene in Episode 2 when she was drunk and started biting him. Even though it turned painful after a while you could tell he was flustered at the beginning. He knows his feelings too, just that he has too invested in this family to act on it immediately.

But that's my biased view. I'm team Oppa all the way!

In my mind, Chilbongie cemented his status as the second lead in this episode. With Na Jung's dating question and the gifts for the family, he is coming off as the nice and polite guy in the triangle - classic second lead material. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they date, but I'd be shocked if he's the husband.

Chilbongie is adorable but I don't think he's the husband. Na Jung has always been all about Trash- I think Chilbongie pursuing her will make Trash realize how important Na Jung is to him. Chilbongie is the catalyst IMO.

I started rewatching '97 again, and I think I like the sequel more as some have said above.

The first season had me squealing in moments of, "Omo, this song! That shirt! I haven't thought of... in ages!" It was a long trip down memory lane, and the story, characters, etc slowly grew over time to make the drama important to me.

This time around, the props are still there. I'm convinced I'm back in '94, but her characters and the story are so much more important. I'm more invested in what is happening and where the story is going to take our little band of bumpkins.

I have to admit I called my mom after watching this episode. I had to hear her voice. Show does a great job of twisting my heartstrings (albeit taking its sweet time) and I'm invested now. No turning back. :)

Thanks for the recap!!

Personally, I think Oppa looks sad because he's been such a big and important part of Na Jung's life that the idea of another man coming into the picture would mean his role would demise. If Na Jung gets a boyfriend, who she loves very much, wouldn't he be the first person she thinks or runs to when something good or bad happens? Wouldn't he be the person to be there for her?

I totally love Na Jung's relationship with Oppa but I don't think he has romantic feelings for her. Maybe in the next few episodes, something will happen that it will change my mind but ultimately the last episode will give me the answer I'm waiting for.

This show is starting to find its own groove which, thank God, because the beginning episodes were just a tad too slow in its pacing compared to its predecessor, which was really zippy and fun. But now I enjoy each one in their own right. What I DO appreciate is that they made Oppa and Chilbongie ACTUAL contenders for Na Jeong's heart, in contrast to 1997 where I feel like we, the audience, had no doubt that it'd be Yoon Jae from the start. So I really have no freaking idea who it could be.

For the record, I am Team Chilbongie because omg, he's like a puppy you want to adopt and I can't help but have a cheesy smile on my face whenever he makes an appearance because his bashful grin is just so damn contagious. I wish he was also one of the boarders just so he can be included in even more scenes. I do worry that he does seem to be a little TOO perfect, what with having perfect manners, being a star athlete, choosing the right answer to a question, and even picking the perfect gift. So I do hope that in the upcoming episodes, his seemingly one-dimensional character will be fleshed out more and we find out more of his idiosyncrasies. I LOVE his 2013 scene with Na-Jeong in the beginning where he berates her for her language, not only because it gives a point to "Team Chilbongie is the husband" but also we got a glimpse of a different side of him, a side that could get aggressive and rebellious. And we saw this sprinkled out throughout the show when he skipped practice and went in for the kiss during the drinking game. Which, rawr.

I actually think he is quite rebellious already. Skipping practice? Stealing his coach's liquor for dad? I like this rebellious streak in him, and I want the show to play with that. He's sooo my type already.

Thanks, JB and GF for the recaps!

I love this episode where mom takes the centre stage. It was heart-breaking when the kids sorta took her for granted and were ignorant to her feelings; yet heart-wariming when the family and the boarders showed their appreciation in their own ways.

I'm Team Chilbongie all the way. I've gathered the writers are going to mess our heads with all the clues and red-herrings but I'm going to stick to Team Chilbongie no matter what until the husband's face is revealed.

Taking a step back, while I read through all the comments, I find the cleverness in this series. It just reinforce to me that what we see is what we choose to perceive. Each team interprete the scenes accordingly to their own perception in order to justify their reasons for the shipping. E.g. When oppa saw chilbongie kissing na-jung or starting at her lovingly, Team Oppa sees jealousy; while I (Team Chilbongie) see it as a brother who saw a guy interested in his kid sister and realised that his kid sister is no longer a kiddo. Unlike a real oppa who probably would have given Chilbongie a punch when he kissed her (like a protective oppa), he can't do much about it. He probably enjoys being oppa and has someone to look after since he is the maknae in his own family where he gets all fussed about?

*********** Spoilers ***********

The entire exchange about what Haitai was supposed to do followed by "what do you do if your girlfriend..." to the chopsticks game....hilarious.

L.O.V.E.

Okay....my two cents, I think the husband is Chilbongie. Why you ask, well the coaches wondered where Joonie was and the husband's name is Kim Jae Joon, I believe.

As much as I love Oppa, I do love Chilbongie a bit more.

Am I the only one who was just happy to see Na Jung actually at school? Granted, she was not in a classroom but at least we can rest assured that she knows where the Engineering Building is, should she decide to start attending classes. I just want her to be smart, maybe because I was an engineering major myself.

I'm disappointed that Binguerre is gay just because it makes this show even more of a carbon copy of '97. It's like they just rotated new actors in to play the same characters and changed their names. Najung is the main girl, Trash is the surrogate brother/love interest, Chilbong is the other love interest, Binguerre is the gay guy with a crush, Yoon Jin is the other girl, Hai Tai is the dopey guy who gets a loveline with the other girl, Samcheungpo is the dopey guy who says funny things. At least enough has changed that we are kept guessing but I would love if this series had a defining feature to set it apart. Even if it was music (97) vs. basketball (94). But we haven't even really seen much basketball since the first week.

If we assume that the actual actor is playing the groom in the wedding then it's Chilbong, hands down. I know nearly every angle of Jung-woo and that ain't him. But, I'm pretty sure they used a stand in so I won't take that as proof. I really hope that all these clues pointing to Chilbong are fake outs. It would be a shame for this show to set up the mystery so well, only to give it away in the third week. My prediction is, next week will be all about Trash and we'll all be back to thinking it's him.

You said you didn't want a carbon copy of 97,But you want Na jung to end up with Garbage. LOL Won't that make it 100% carbon copy of Reply 97? Hoya who was gay had crush on Yoon Jae while Yoon Jae a chilhood friend loved Shi won and ended up with her. Isn't it happening in Reply 94,exactly in the same way?

Does Garbage get less screen time, in your opinion to need even more screen time?

I like Garbage but I prefer if the show gives more screen time to other actors too. If they want a real triangle,Develop other character as much as Garbage. It's like they just want people to love Garbage and won't love Chilbong as much as him.

Every Najung and Chilbong's scene, either has Garbage in it or will be followed by another sweet Garbage action. Can't Chilbong have a moment of his own to shine and stand out without having Garbage turning it into a less important because his actions are way sweater and more awesome?

The writer is way too bias toward Garbage and no wonder Netizens and everyone love him.The writer doesn't let other character to be as lovely as him or even to come close to him.

Calm down! Now go back and actually read what I wrote. I don't have a preference about the Hubby at all; they are both great. I only said that, since this week they gave us a lot of hints (HINTS, not screen-time, HINTS) about Chilbong, I think next week they will give us a lot of hints about Garbage. At least they will if they are smart, so they don't give the mystery away too early like they did in '97.

Chilbongie does have his moment.

In the present at the beginning, when he grabs the coffee Na Jung made for herself and then tells her he's tired of her swearing.

It's like he's turned into a version of her, not sweet and kind but sassy saying he was too innocent back then.

It's almost as if he's saying Aigoo why did I marry this dirty mouthed ahjumma :D So take a moment to enjoy his moment

the mom's story wins the show for me, i care abut the main actor, but showing the mom's problem is perfect, i just love it- mom in family never be so potray in very usual day like this, it's not about money, debt or sacrifice it's her problem that some people can't understand it

i think this show is present in na-jung's life,
i mean in all early episode is almost about oppa cause na-jung really know about him,
then her mother that she realize have a lot problem, then chilbong who is slowly enter her life, and her friends that she knows more now,
i think chilbong gonna have a lot of screen time after he really into that family---afer this ep

it's easy for oppa to have ha-jung love since they always together but will oppa confession satisfied na-jung or it just make her realized it just a crush? not real love?
or have a guy who try to understand him touch her heart deeply
oppa knows her because they grow together, chilbong's love her even-though he has seen her bad mouth

for the husband, time will answer,
i don't know how to guess

I felt very touched when the parents found out that mum is pregnant on the BIRTHDAY OF THEIR DECEASED ELDEST SON.

I once watched a documentary about parents who lost their children in China's Sichuan earthquake which killed many primary school children, trying to conceive again, hoping that their child will return to them through a newborn. (It is a Chinese belief) In China, due to the 1 child policy, many parents lost their one precious child. Some managed to have a newborn son 'in place' of their deceased son; some managed to have a newborn son but it was a daughter they lost which left them confused; unfortunately, some did not managed to conceive again despite trying all sorts of methods, leaving them in devastation.

This special present seemed like it is from their deceased son, trying to alleviate his parents from the hurt; it also seems like it is their deceased child who return to them. Whatever it is, I am so glad for the presence of 'Sooksookie' present.

I am not sure which scene that I squealed harder...

When Thrash Oppa kisses Binggeure or
when Chilbong kisses Najung or...
again having Oppa striping down to his boxers in front of Najung, I can feel my ear burn on Najung's behalf...

Kya... I can't...this show will be the death of me... I thought after surviving 1997, this would be a walk in the park...no... it got me even more invested...

I like that Oppa is slowly recognizing his feelings but do not know what to make it of it.... I want him to be the hubby so bad!!!

My own thoughts why Chilbong is not the hubby is because the coffee scene was kinda awkward... I don't think couple that have relationship like that have such conversation, its more like... "yeah I thought that was cute(Najung's swearing), but yeah we didnt end up together... "... ah... I dunno... knowing Answer Me series... its gonna play out till the last minute...

And I really like how the story on mom... kids taking her for granted was really quite sad and really like the whole gifting point, her expression with the ring... made me teared...

And and... the whole menopause twist into pregnancy... really appa reaction and omma being temperamental... I love those heart to heart talk scenes.... Sung Dong Il and Lee IlHwa are jjang!!!

Friday can't come sooner!!!!

Wow, there's a character limit now? Some people write a lot.

Anyways, this has to be the most hilarious episode yet with the Na Jung farting scene, Yoo Jin and Samcheonpo's fight, andthe king game scene.

Also, I think that I'm really slow. I didn't even realize that Junhee was gay until I found out that he was the mysterious caller. I wonder whether or not I would have realized that Binggeure was gay in episode 6 if not for people pointing out he may be gay in the episode 5 recap comments. And the teenager being the brother never occurred to me. Anyways, I agree w/ K-netz and hope that Baro is the mysterious guy who Junhee ends up with in the future. Writers make it happen! They already connected Reply 1994 and Reply 1997 through Dr. Jooyeon.

I'm rooting for Najung and Chilbongi to be together.
Writernim would most probably pick oppa-yah in the end. I'm going to feel cheated if she does. It's just the worst thing to do to make your second lead so rootable and then let the female lead go to the obvious choice.
And oppa-yah is obvious because he know Najung in and out, what she likes and her habits.
Aish. I don't know. I'll just go back and study. This guessing game tortures me more than memorizing carbon compounds.
It's pretty frustrating, and it shows how emotionally invested I am in this drama. I think the best way to go is to wait until show ends, SEE who's the hubs, and decide to watch or not according to it.
I can foresee, like, 45% of the ship becomes turned off if their ship didn't win at the end. And 45% of the other one rejoice. The 5% are the rare, lucky ones who doesn't at all mind who Na Jung ends up with.

Who is the husband? This is going to torture me for next 7 weeks. Sighhhh!
Now have watched all 6 episodes. I noticed there is a huge difference between Trash and Chilbongi. They both have got great personality and are ideal husband material. The difference is new excitement/discovery vs love. Chilbongi is fascinated by Najung - she is totally different than anyone he has came across before. I would say Najung is an excitement to him - new and fresh. On the other hand, Trash's actions towards Najung since episode 2 are love. I don't know Trash is in love with her (may be or may be not) but he definitely loves her and cares about her a great deal.
So who is going to win? True Love or New Excitement? Will love turn into romantic love? And will new excitement turn into true love? Oh man! Have to wait another 7 weeks to find it out!
BTW, thanks Javabean and Girlfriday for the recaps!

I do hope Oppa will forever be her Oppa--don't we all wish we had someone there for us like a guardian angel... Her husband (?) well it be ChilBB or Oppa... There's a total of 20 episodes, do we have to wait that long to find out who the hubby is? Please don't tease too much or too long...

I just wanted to watch Go Ara and ended up loving this drama.. Truly-hook line and sinker from the first episode, and Jung Woo as Garbage er is a wonder, he's usually casted as a good for nothing character but I just love him here.. Oppa fighting! And for ChilBB, I love his awe and wonder and affection for this bunch as well as growing love NJ...

Cant imagine Chilbongie hanging around her even after shes married, but I certaintly can envision Trash Oppa
