Answer Me 1994: Episode 5

This is a cute episode that does a rare thing (in the Answer Me series) by sticking to one timeline. It even confines the story to twenty-four hours, where we encounter everything from the mundane to the surprising, in a day filled with idol encounters, communal showers, a mystery digestive ailment, and that thing about the boy you have a crush on and the perfect way he wears (and un-wears) a sweatshirt.

EPISODE 5: “Words I Can’t Bear to Say”

The camera starts in on a close-up of Dad’s shocked face, and pulls back slowly to reveal the entire household hovering by him, everyone gaping in unison at the massive breakfast spread before them. Dad, ever the coach, tells them not to cave to fear, and sits down to eat like he’s going to war.

Mom singsongs her way through the kitchen and brings two more heaping mounds of food, making everyone’s eyes turn over. Dad asks if there’s something the matter with her today because it’s a lot of food, even for her.

Mom explains that it’s because all the kids’ moms keep sending them food, so they have to eat this way, otherwise they’ll never keep up and the care packages will spoil. That’s so sweet.

Dad decides they ought to know who sent what to properly thank them, like the fish from Samcheonpo’s fishing family, or the eggs from Binggeure’s farm. At the mention of Binggeure’s hardworking parents, Garbage chides him for skipping class all the time and disappointing them.

Dad chucks a fish at him, crying that his best friend recently called to ask if his son is still alive, since if he weren’t, it might explain why he hasn’t called home in half a year. Garbage hangs his head.

There’s this great beat where Dad takes a heaping spoonful of steamed egg only to spit it out instantly, and Mom deadpans, “That’s really hot.” Dad: “Thanks for telling me so soon.”

I love all the little side interactions at the table, like Chilbongie stealing glances at Na-jung the whole time, or Garbage scooping out his own rice to feed Binggeure more.

Garbage asks where the octopus is from, and Mom says it came up from Masan last night. Garbage: “Who lives in Masan?” Dad flings a second fish at him in exasperation: “Your mom. Your mom, you dolt. Your mom lives in Masan!”

Dad asks Chilbongie about his first game of the season, and Na-jung seems a little impressed as the other boys all call him the ace pitcher even as a freshman. She asks which order he bats at, only to have Haitai explain that he throws the ball, and that he’s a better athlete than her beloved Lee Sang-min. Na-jung flares up at that, thinking it absurd.

Dad chides Chilbongie’s coach for overusing him, as if he needs to store up his good pitches for when he joins the major league, and recounts that he’s had his eye on him since his high school days.

Na-jung recognizes the name of his high school because it’s where a lot of the Yonsei basketball players are from, and Chilbongie says they’re all friends, which drops Na-jung’s jaw. Haha. Suddenly he’s very cool, eh?

He offers to call the basketball house and get “Sang-min hyung” on the phone, and her eyes turn to saucers. And then just like that, he gets up, dials the number, and gets Lee Sang-min on the phone: “Hyung, it’s me, Jjoonie.” So cute.

Na-jung darts up from her seat, but when Chilbongie hands over the receiver, she freaks out and goes running. He chases her all the way through the house and finds her hiding under a table, but she shakes her head and pleads with him not to make her speak. I love it—when presented with her first real opportunity, she can’t say a single word.

Mom realizes there’s yet another dish she forgot to put on the table, and adds the crab that Yoon-jin’s mother sent. Samcheonpo takes one bite and makes a funny face, warning that maybe Chilbongie shouldn’t eat it if he has an important game today, thinking it could be spoiled. Everyone else eats and declares it fine, but Samcheonpo remains unconvinced.

Na-jung calls oppa to request his presence at an intramural soccer game today, but he can’t get out of his clinical rounds in time because of his stupid professor, who happens to be standing right behind him to hear the barb… followed by Na-jung’s shouty declaration over the phone that there must be something wrong with that professor “down there” if he’s still unmarried with such a great job.

Garbage sighs and kicks a milk carton into the trash while thinking of the missed game, and explodes milk all over his face for good measure. He joins in on rounds, and hey, there’s 1997’s Kim Jong-min and Juyeon among the docs! Hello, crossover cameos.

The professor lines up the med students to hear their thoughts on a terminal patient, and sighs that Juyeon won’t be making it very far in med school. Garbage is the only one who has a clue what to do, and the professor takes an interest in him and asks his name… which of course we cut around.

Juyeon tells her fellow student that a fortuneteller told her she’d marry a chaebol someday, and she’d meet him here in this hospital. Ha.

Garbage finds their patient’s two little boys fighting over their Gameboy, and adorably chides the hyung for not sharing and the little brother for not being more grateful. He warns that the hospital is lined with security cameras and he’ll be watching to make sure they take turns properly. Cute. He gets the good news that the interns are free to go to the soccer game after all, with the message from his professor that he’s intact “down there,” in case he wants to clear that up with the girl on the phone earlier.

Meanwhile Yoon-jin lines up to get into Inkigayo, and when she hears that they’re only letting in forty members of each fan club, she hurriedly jumps ship to join the ajumma fans in the next line. Smart.

Haitai and Samcheonpo get ready for their department’s turn in the soccer game and go slackjawed at the pretty cheerleaders (who’re here for the med students). Na-jung scowls more than usual at the drooling. She gets a stomachache, but the boys seem fine, so she lets it go.

Garbage runs home to change for the game, and hello there, oppa’s abs. Mrwar. He gets a stomachache too, which does not bode well for everyone else in the house. He stops by Binggeure’s room to take him to the game, and when he protests, Garbage just slings him over his shoulder and carries him out. Heh.

Haitai and Samcheonpo get called in to play for the game against the med students, and their sunbaes tell them they have a chance of winning as long as “that one guy” doesn’t show up… and then they all groan when Garbage arrives.

Na-jung lights up to see oppa, only to get all ragey when she sees that the cheerleaders are here for him. He stops the ref before the game starts to take off his sweatshirt, and walks back toward the stands.

He passes right by his fangirls without a second glance and scans the crowd up and down… finally landing on Na-jung. Eeee. He throws his sweatshirt over her head and puts his watch on her wrist before returning to the field, and Na-jung swoons silently as the cheerleaders fume.

She pulls oppa’s sweatshirt down and breathes in the smell. Squee. Is there a better feeling in all the world? Something about the look on Binggeure’s face in that moment pangs my heart though. Is he jealous?

At Inkigayo, Seo Taiji and Boys take the stage and Yoon-jin sings and dances her little heart out in the sea of ajummas, who gape at the stowaway fangirl sitting in their section.

Back at the soccer game, Haitai and Samcheonpo get hit with their stomachaches at exactly the wrong time, and spend most of the game running back and forth to the bathroom while Garbage scores goal after goal against them.

After the game, Binggeure waits in the locker room while Haitai and Samcheonpo shower. (They even argue in there about Haitai using Samcheonpo’s soap, ha.)

A shirtless Garbage comes out, takes one whiff of his shirt, then Binggeure’s, and literally demands the shirt off his back.

Binggeure just looks up at him with these big dewey eyes, and awwww, he does have a crush, doesn’t he? Garbage practically strips the sweatshirt off of him, but Binggeure gets all shy and turns his back to take it off.

Garbage ruffles his hair and heads back to work, leaving Binggeure moony-eyed in his wake.

The girls aren’t faring much better in the war against breakfast crab. Na-jung sits on the toilet hugging oppa’s sweatshirt, while Yoon-jin comes out of the bathroom long after the concert is over. She wanders into a hallway of dressing rooms, and runs into Kim Jung-min who introduces himself as a new artist, heh.

And then, she comes upon the holy grail: Seo Taiji’s dressing room. She gets a peek inside and sees the back of his head, but a manager tells her she can’t be here. Seo Taiji sees her outside and calls her in, and Yoon-jin isn’t anything like Na-jung when it comes to her oppa—she jumps right inside.

He offers to share the chips he’s eating (you know, those old-school bugle-shaped ones), and she sticks out her hand. It’s like a dream sequence from her point of view, the way the corn chips fall like flower petals, and she carries them all the way home like they’re made of diamonds, gold dust, and bottled rainbows.

She finally gets home and lays them out on her desk, and has a silent squeal over it. She’s adorable.

At home, the bathroom hijinks and gymnastics continue as Haitai and Samcheonpo get muscled out of their turn in line by Na-jung and Mom, and have to resort to heading outside. Gross, in the yard?

At the hospital, the terminal patient finds out that she doesn’t have much time left, but can’t bring herself to tell her two sons that she’s dying and leaving them all alone. She sees Garbage playing with them in the hallway, and finds him later to ask him if he can’t tell the boys that she’s just going away for a little while.

He mulls it over at his desk, and remembers that Juyeon lost her mom at the age of seven, and asks how much she understood about death back then.

At home Mom makes a simple porridge for dinner since everyone’s sick, and talk turns to which of the foods made them this way. They eliminate one by one because it’s something everyone had to have eaten, and Samcheonpo declares that it has to be the crab. Everyone stiffens awkwardly to see that Yoon-jin is embarrassed by it, but Samcheonpo remains as clueless as ever.

They see that Chilbongie is on TV for an interview after his game, and everyone heads to the living room to watch. They wonder if maybe it wasn’t the crab because he seems perfectly fine, but then he says in the interview that his less-than-perfect game was because he had an upset stomach earlier.

Then the sports news segment ends with footage of Dad running off his field mid-game, clutching his butt in a familiar posture. Samcheonpo declares that crab has left a big scar on their nation’s sports today, while the rest of the family tries to smooth it over like it’s no big deal to cushion Yoon-jin’s feelings.

From the other end of the couch, Garbage points out that Dad didn’t eat crab today, and a flashback reminds us that he got the call about an injured player and ran off before he could take his first bite.

Garage just keeps prattling on, but everyone else turns slowly toward Yoon-jin, who has silently burst into tears. Aw.

Sometime later that night, Haitai is yanking a petulant and embarrassed Samcheonpo, urging him to go say he’s sorry to Yoon-jin. But he shakes his head like a child and hangs onto the stairs for dear life, unable to say the words.

In the kitchen, Mom takes a swig of tea and spits it out, realizing she forgot to put it in the fridge last night. And then it dawns on her that the tea was the culprit at the breakfast table. She leaves a note on the fridge that dinner will be out at a restaurant, and that Yoon-jin’s attendance is mandatory. Garbage narrates in voiceover:

Garbage: In this world, there are words too difficult to say. There are words that you can’t bear to say to the ones you love. When you have to explain the pain you’ve caused another… and when you have to convey the truth to those who aren’t yet prepared for it.

Garbage sighs over his dilemma of what to tell his patient’s sons, and Juyeon tells him that she remembers everything about her mother’s last looks and how she felt, even at that age.

Haitai finally succeeds in stuffing Samcheonpo into Yoon-jin’s room for an apology, and he hems and haws before finally getting out a tiny “I’m sorry.” (Though hilariously, it’s the whole of his personality he’s apologizing for, ha.) She lets it go, saying she’s already forgotten about it, and he beams.

But then he starts chitchatting again, and reaches for a corn chip… and another… and another. Ack! She finally realizes what he’s doing and comes at him with a pair of scissors still in her hands, cursing up a storm at him for eating her precious treasure.

Garbage sits outside the hospital early the next morning, wondering what to say. He gets up and kneels in front of a bench and takes a deep breath before beginning his speech to the little boys. He explains that all people get sick, but sometimes, like their mom right now, they get so sick that they have to say goodbye.

He says that their mom will give them homework in preparation of that day, and makes them promise not to be too sad, to study hard and go to college, and for hyung to share with his little brother once a day, and for the little brother to hug his hyung once a day. He sticks out his finger to make them pinky-swear, and then we see that it’s not the boys he’s talking to, but Mom, as he explains that’s what she should tell them. Aw.

He says it doesn’t really matter what she says, but she needs to let them remember her face in the end. He sits next to her as she sobs, and then he gives her his Gameboy so that the boys won’t fight anymore. Augh, oppaaaaaa, stop making me cry!

Garbage: When you have to convey the truth to a loved one who will have a hard time accepting it, when you have to deliver words you’d rather die than say, you just have to think of one thing… More than any long speech, more than eloquent words, it’s the look in your eye that says that you love them—that one thing is plenty.

COMMENTS

It’s so impossible not to love Garbage—he’s perfect. I didn’t even care about the patient, other than obviously feeling bad for her, because we know we’re only meeting her for one episode. But it’s Jung Woo’s delivery that makes it not matter, because the way he gives that speech, with his sincere eyes and his shaky voice, just wrings tears from my eyes on cue. He’s so good. I don’t know if oppa ends up being Na-jung’s future husband, but it doesn’t much matter because mostly I just want him for me.

I’m obviously not the only one either, because it looks like Binggeure’s nursing a pretty big crush (and may therefore already know about Na-jung’s feelings, though it’s hard to tell when he’s so introverted). I wondered early on if Binggeure was set up to be this year’s Hoya, which is certainly another of the many things 1994 lifts from its predecessor. But if he turns out to be, I would never bemoan another sensitive, progressive portrayal of a gay character from the Answer Me crew (besides which, dramaland isn’t yet in a place where a token gay character is even a thing). I’m looking forward to his development and was pleasantly surprised today that the first bit of jealousy and crossed wires among the housemates was with him and Na-jung. Yay for a step forward on the loveline entanglement front.

Speaking of which, Chilbongie already kills me with his stolen glances at Na-jung at every opportunity, so I don’t think we’re far from that storyline kicking into gear. How much do I love the way he earned cool points with her at breakfast by being friends with her idol, even though the rest of the table is busy trying to explain that he’s just as famous? It’s pretty great that she’s like, eh, baseball schmaseball, which he just finds cute and endearing because it’s her. Overall I just want more of Chilbongie and his adorably smitten grin. All the time. Moar. Moar.

It seemed so fitting for her personality that Na-jung’s big swoon today was as a fangirl in the stands of oppa’s big game, even if it was only an intramural soccer match. I loved everything about the moment, from Garbage being cool (because based on everything we’ve seen of him at home, he’s so not… and yet… why is he so cool?), to Na-jung getting to feel extra special because he seeks her out in the crowd. Isn’t it funny how the little things like, Here, hold my stuff, can be so meaningful when you have your first one-sided crush? The way she just drank in his sweatshirt like it Meant Things—it’s what this show does so skillfully—it encapsulates in one seemingly tiny gesture everything about the high of young, heady love.

I soooo agree. It has to be Chibonggie. Trash is the penultimate big brother. It would be almost incestuous for him to be the husband. I hope Death Girl and Haitai get together. Not Sam Cheon Po. He is too finicky. She would be all over him and have him beat in no time. At least with Haitai she could breathe and be Death Girl instead of personality police.

I weirdly think yoon-jin and the older brother(trash) will get together and Na Jung and Chilbongie. If Yooun-jin doesn't marry trash then haitai. Hopefully I'm not the only one shipping them :D

I thought so too at first, but if we do the maths isn't it kind of impossible? A kid born before 1994 would be older than a high school student in 2013..

I thought that too, but then realized that even if those kids were like, 5 or 6 in 1994 they'd be in their twenties in the 2013 present.. so that kid definitely isn't one of the patien rts sons

We are getting there, albeit slowly but we're still getting there (I fervently hope). Chilbongie, baby. I wonder who Yoo Jin got married to, could it be one of the guys? And Oppa, you make me wish I had a brother. This episode was SUPER slow but if it's going to be worth my time, then why not?

I'm such a goner! I mean I liked all the episodes so far but this one... So many great moments!

My heart already bleeds for Binggeure as it did for Joon Hee in Reply 1997!

I still have no idea whom to ship though :D I mean ... Oppa is great and I wouldn't say no to him but Chilbongie is great as well.... Can I have the pairings like this in the end: Na Jung + Chilbongie and Binggeure + Oppa^^ Because I think I can't take another unrequited gay romance!

One thing is clear though > I WANT MOAR!!!

I've read from the Ep 5 comments on the Netizenbuzz blog that Binggurae might be the guy in the red sprots car at the end of the last ep of 1997. So he prolly might be Junhee's love interest. ;)

After this episode I ship Na Jeong and Chil Bong even more. Probably because now I kind of ship Garbage and Bingguere, although I'm not sure how likely it is for that pairing to happen. XD
Really loving this show though despite the slow pacing. It's just so down to earth in a great way which is what the Answer Me series does best.

Thanks for the recap. I had the same reaction - episode without jumping to different timelines :--)

This time I enjoyed the episode and its slow rythm. Though I would still appreciate some deeper interactions than passing each other on the way to toilet ;--)

Oppa... I just wait for every scene he is in. Regardless of any romance.

Oppa with every little things he does just never fails to make me swoon. I share the same feelings, I'm in Oppa's ship because he's just so perfect and I don't want to see him broken hearted for not getting the girl. Although I do like their bickering and all, but mostly it's the Oppa factor that got me to ship them.
Chilbongi is cute as well, but I haven't seen more of him in this drama, so it's gonna be hard at this point to make me jump ship.
I really liked the cross-cameo they have in this episode, made me wish that TaeWoong would come as a cameo as well (and really, I wouldn't say no to more Song Jong Ho :D ).
And Jung Woo's acting in that last scene. Gah, his delivery got me! He is so good.
Btw, I just noticed something from this episode, almost all of the characters' haircut at the boarding house seem to resemble Sohoko HS Basketball Team in Slam Dunk.
Oppa - Hanamichi Sakuragi (minus the red hair)
Najung - Kaede Rukawa
Haitai - Ryo-chin
Yoon Jin - Mitchi
Samchunpo - Megane-kun
But maybe it's just me and my obsession with Slam Dunk. LOL.

I think they've made that reference a lot actually (a lot of the time they call yoonjin by the (Korean translation) name of a slam dunk character).. but I've noticed some translators don't call attention to it.

Loved this episode. It seemed so simple and sweet, encapsulating a day in these characters' lives. Really great episode.

This episode made me love Garbage Oppa even more! So cool and sexy the way he just walked off the field and handed Na-jung his sweater. Who wouldn't swoon over that? I also loved that last scene he had with the patient. Really well acted by Jung Woo.

Chilbongie is great too, but I don't like him nearly as much as I like Oppa.

Samcheonpo and Haitai are funny and their bickering is cute to watch. They really are like best friends now.

I enjoyed the Yoon-jin scenes so much; she's adorable. When she cried, I felt so bad for her, and was so angry at Samcheonpo for making her cry. And then he goes and eats her chips! Oh, the horror! LOL.

And Binggeure really touched my heart this episode. In the bleachers, I thought he had a crush on Na-jung, too, and was jealous of Garbage. But then we see him in the locker room reacting to Garbage, and I thought "maybe he likes him." Which isn't a bad thing, but it is aggravating if this is yet another thing their taking from
Answer Me 1997. I want this show to set itself apart as much as possible from 1997, but so far, it hasn't been that much of a leap. It is different, but certain things make it not different.

And that last scene with Garbage, especially his voice over, made me think that maybe he might regret playing off Na-jung's confession as a joke. Maybe? No? Yes? Hmm. I hope so. For Na-jung's sake, Garbage's, and mine.

Thanks for the recap, Girlfriday!

As far as Garbage's speech, I am more afraid he will be telling NJ these words in the future. He knows that she has a crush on him; he hasn't YET told her he knows it. So far he just pretended it was a joke.

"When you have to convey the truth to a loved one who will have a hard time accepting it, when you have to deliver words you’d rather die than say, you just have to think of one thing… More than any long speech, more than eloquent words, it’s the look in your eye that says that you love them—that one thing is plenty."

How about this for a turnaround. Not only does Binggeure have a crush on Oppa, but it's reciprocal? It can explain why he is sooo comfortable with all of NJ's intimacy without any fear of falling her her, and why sooo quickly he passed her confession off as a joke.

Humor can hide truth well and cover a lot of pain.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean in that first part. Do you want her husband to be Garbage?

As for the rest, since I am a firm supporter of Garbage as Na-jung's husband, I hope he isn't gay. I wouldn't mind if he was, but I don't want him to be, because I like him with her. A person can be comfortable with someone, and it can be platonic at first, but then slowly build into something more. We've seen it happen in more than enough dramas to dismiss it here.

Another commenter said that Binguere could be the guy in the red car in AM1997 that Hoya's character gets into at the end. I think this could be true, too, if the Answer Me writers are determined to tie the two together. And because I adored Hoya's character and want to see his happy ending. And on Wikipedia, it shows that Hoya will cameo in AM1994. I don't think he has yet, has he? According to Wikipedia, Seo In-guk will guest as well. And he hasn't yet has he? Let me know in case I missed it.

I think you have a very valid point about Binguere and Hoya... Hoya was a doctor/medical intern in 1997, and at least for now, Binguere is enrolled in med. school. So maybe he doesn't end up quitting after all and that's where they meet.

I also don't want Oppa to be gay and I don't see any signs either. He's comfortable with Na Jung's physical touches here and there, but he doesn't seem shy around the guys either. I think it's just his personality that he is not uber sensitive to some things...

Later in Ep.6, no spoilers intended, I def. catch signs of Oppa possibly having some feelings for Na Jung though. Or maybe I'm just reading to much into it.

I was just thinking that about Hoya being a doctor and Binguere being in med school. I really hope this is where the writers are taking us, if they plan to tie the two together.

I also think it is just Oppa's personality that makes him so comfortable with everyone else. And the reason he gave Binguere some of his rice is because Binguere is his hoobae at school, since they are in the same department.

I haven't seen episode 6 yet, but if Oppa really does have feelings for Na-jung, then I'm glad. The show and writers wouldn't make him so irresistible if he wasn't going to be a love interest, right?

0

that and oh yeah did you all forget that Oppa had a friggin girlfriend just last episode??? LOL I mean having a gf doesn't eliminate the possibility of him being gay but he didn't seem to be using her as a beard either

Actually, this would be a really cool crossover moment.

I laughed how everyone freaked out when Taewoong's wife of A1997 appeared as a cameo and everyone screamed ''Garbage is going to marry her''

heh, people it is Taewoong wife! Didn't you get it?

Plus, now knowing Baro character is gay, I somehow hope in the end he is the one in the red car that Hoya got into in A1997 SQUEEEEEEEEE

I think the pace is what I like the most.

We aren't in a hurry to get anywhere with these characters, we are just here to enjoy the ride.

the drama could be like other dramas where everything happens but nobody knows whay happened because it was a mess.

Like I said last episode if its not chilbongi am really really really going to cry and curse this show for breaking my heart. Oppa is so cool but I can't help but love CHILLY is so cute. Am so on the NA-CHIL ship. CHILLY FIGHTING!!!! NA-CHIL FOREVER!!!!

Ah, this show.. I might actually end up loving this show more than 1997, which i didn't think would be true with the first few episodes. I think it's garbage. He just totally steals the show. Not knowing whether or not na jung ends up with him makes me tear my hair out a bit.
I also like the fact that they're all old enough to start exploring a kind of relationship that maybe 1997 was limited to since they were highschoolers faling in love.

I love it when they're all eating together at the table (i bet the cast loves filming these scenes) because that's when you really see them all together in their own dynamic.
Chilbongie is adorable as ever, Binggeure just got a whole lot more interesting, Yoon Jin and Samcheonpo are probably going to end up together, and Na Jung is so adorably obvious with her feelings for oppa.
That last scene was so beautiful and dammit jung woo that look he gives -- i was a goner.

I think i've settled nicely into the pacing -- although slow for others, have remained consistent for me.
I'm really excited what they have in store for us for the next 15 episodes.
I absolutely love the ost for this show. It feels so fitting without ever taking me out of the moment. The song of the day is so great.
Answer me 1994 is the show that makes me giddy with all these feels week-to-week.

Thanks for the recap!!

I love that my horrible Fridays now have this show to brighten it.

I cried watching and again, reading this.

I ship Oppa and Binggeure. At breakfast, he gave food to both NJ and B. Signs of love? Yes.

Now that Oppa is out (for me, anyway) I guess it will be C. He doesn't excite me much yet, though. He's too harmless, but I do have a feeling he turns up the heat soon. How awesome was he to call SM for NJ? His heart must have been beating as hard as hers, hoping and praying SM would be home so he could duly impress his crush.

YJ's dancing was the highlight of the ep. The girl can move. I love what a 180° change in personality she experiences as a fan, and am betting we get to see more of that side of her at home soon, too.

I love this! I think Momo may have nailed it. Bingurae crushes on Garbage, and starts going to class to be with Hyung, becomes a doctor, meets '97's Joon at the hospital, and ends up in the red car.

I'm stunned by how good Jung Woo is. I know he saved plenty of scenes in YBBLSS but he's twisting my heart in all the right ways. The quiet, little gestures, the kindness and thoughtfulness that radiates when he's on screen is killing me. I can't wait for the next episode!

Eeek! I'm still an Oppa-NJ shipper, but Chil-bong's starting to get to me. Noooo!

Love the Jong-min & Juyeong cameo-crossovers. Aaaw at Binggeure's crush. So sweet!

"Isn’t it funny how the little things like, Here, hold my stuff, can be so meaningful when you have your first one-sided crush?" --- I remembered something from experience and I cringe now at the memory, but it was a little thrilling when things like that happened back then.

I love this show... Sure it's a little slow at times but there are too many perfect little moments in between. This is speculation, but how awesome would it be if Bingguere turns out to be the driver of the red car that picked up Joon Hee at the end of 1994?!?!

this show has so much potential to be REALLY good if it were edited better. the scenes are way too long, and my eyes keep glazing over because a scene seems to drag on for eons. combined with the sepia tones/filter/whatever that tvn is so fond of using for its dramas is no help either. visually, it's just really hard to SEE for me. and i'm a 20s-something with normal eyesight, so it could just be me. but this seems to be a pattern with all tvn dramas for me—they're all hard to look at without getting drowsy, no matter how good the storyline.

which is why i was waiting for this recap to go up because i don't know if they ever found out whose food it was that caused the upset stomachs? i rewinded and skipped around several times trying to discover if they ever found out... but perhaps it was the combination of all those foods together rather than just one food. heh

It was actually the tea that they were all drinking that was going bad, as the mother found out towards the end of the episode. So it turned out, it was none of the food.

I do agree that the pacing could have been made tighter. If they decided to make it a one-hour episode, perhaps have a total of 16 (or 18) as opposed to the planned 20 episodes.

But it's great that we get to know each character as each episode unfolds, one benefit of having a much longer show. And I really don't mind seeing oppa's gratuitous abs shots. More, more! :)

I am loving the story so far, some scenes may feel like filler but they tie up nicely at the end and when it does, it just gives me that heart-wrenching feeling. And the Samchoonpo - Haitai bickering never fails to make me laugh, they are like reluctant BFFs. Can't they just end up together? :)

I am all for the Garbage oppa - Najung ship but Chilbongie is just too cute with his puppy eyes. "The way she just drank in his sweatshirt like it Meant Things—it’s what this show does so skillfully—it encapsulates in one seemingly tiny gesture everything about the high of young, heady love." Very well said. It is this aspect of the show that I try so hard to explain to my k-drama watching friends but can't convey well in words. Maybe one of these days I'll do a marathon in school and slowly reel them in (like how I got them to start watching TWTWB).

Oppa is gay....
"In this world, there are words too difficult to say. There are words that you can’t bear to say to the ones you love. When you have to explain the pain you’ve caused another… and when you have to convey the truth to those who aren’t yet prepared for it."..."When you have to convey the truth to a loved one who will have a hard time accepting it, when you have to deliver words you’d rather die than say, you just have to think of one thing… More than any long speech, more than eloquent words, it’s the look in your eye that says that you love them—that one thing is plenty."
Watch ep 6, and then tell me...Oppa is gay

Nah, I think he just doesn't feel the same for NJ, and doesn't want to hurt her feelings because he only see her as a younger sister (for now)

But it can be also because he is gay, because of episode 6 scenes, and how in episodes 1-5 he keeps getting Baro's character to every place and on the future you can see that he was playing with his hands on Baro's back! OMG.

I feel like this episode was better paced than the first four. The breakfast scene was a little long, but it had a point in the end so it didn't bother me. Mostly I was happy to see YJ again, it feels like she doesn't get enough air tome. That scene where Sam Cheon Po ate her precious bugles was gold.

Jung Woo is seriously killing it by being the best oppa ever. I don't actually think he'll end up with NJ and am rooting for Chilbong, but I still swoon whenever he does something nice for NJ.

Based on my 10-year experience of Kdrama (yeah Autumn in My Heart aired in my country when I was 8), I strongly believe Oppa is the husband. Why? Reasons as follow.
Reason 1: Dad is really favoring Chilbong. According to my instinct, the male leads are always the ones parents don't pay attention to unless the girl's family is extremely poor.

Reason 2 : In 2013 scenes, the directors are indicting every arrow in the house to make it look like Chilbong is the husband (like, him going casually into the room to sleep). Things like that always happens to have a twist later on.

Reason 3 : on the very first episode, Na Jung is giving directions to her husband. If he's a Seoul guy, why would she need to do that?

Reason 4 : In the same conversation, Na Jung asked her husband to get yogurt for her without almonds. But instead she said "I'm sorry. Ok ok" then she bungs up the phone and whines "but I hate almonds". If you think about it only Oppa could have the power to do everything in his way because Chilbong seems like a guy who would go anything Na Jung likes.

So there are my reasons why Oppa is the sole candidate for husband. Please don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong.

Required fields are marked *

A lot of us do believe she was on the phone with Oppa considering her tone of voice, it's very similar to the way she communicates with him. Though here are my two cents in regards to your reasons 3 and 4.

Reason 3:
- Assuming Oppa IS the husband, why would he need directions to his own house? Despite the fact that Oppa isn't a native Seoulite shouldn't be an excuse for not knowing his way around. It's 2013, he should know his way around by now right?

- Assuming Oppa ISN'T the husband, he probably hasn't been to her house considering the fact that Na Jung and hubby just moved in. It would then make sense for Oppa to need directions.

Reason 4:
- As you mentioned Chilbongie doesn't seem like the type to deny Na Jung of her likes and dislikes so it sort of confirms that it WAS Oppa on the phone. Looking at the dynamic of Oppa and Na Jung's relationship, it makes it easier for Oppa to reject the fact that she doesn't want almonds in her coffee.

Though I do agree that she was definitely on the phone with Oppa, I'm not quite convinced that it implies she was talking to him from the perspective of a wife. These are just my thoughts from that particular bit of the show.

There are sooo many arrows that are pointing to both Oppa and Chilbongie that it makes it hard for me to really bet all my money on one guy. We've seen a lot of Oppa but just wait until Chilbongie starts developing, the writers are going to toss more clues our way that will have us question which one is the husband even more.

In term of reason #3, I do think it would be Oppa she is on the phone with.

Seeing back to their lives in 1994, Na Jung has always been the one who is giving him instruction to things such as where he places his stuff, to turning off the lights to the restroom and lotion his face.

I mean he is a genius but he is still obvious to certain things such as that so it would not be surprise to me that Na Jung have to give him direction to get home (the fastest route home possible)

As for as #4, I do believe it got to be Oppa since so far Chilbongie is smitten with her and he seem to be the one who would do anything she asks so if she asks while Oppa doesn't listen to her (even if he eventually would get it for her - aka the cookie scene in episode 2, him saying no to her but end up getting it for her anyway)

Ep 6 has me even more on the Oppa train, but I'm starting to get second lead syndrome too, oops. But I will say, in 1997, Shiwon's bra strap was rearranged by her husband - which seemed like a really obvious clue.

"Juyeon tells her fellow student that a fortuneteller told her she’d marry a chaebol someday, and she’d meet him here in this hospital. Ha."

I'm such a forgetful idiot. I've been wondering who'd she end up with. For one moment, I thought it was Garbage due to that moment that they had where he was asking her about her mother's death, but he doesn't fit that description. But it does sound a lot like a certain someone from Reply 1997. Tae Woong meets her in the hospital, and he ends up becoming super rich.

I have a question: does anyone know what the cultural attitude was in relation to homosexuality in Korea around this time? I was in high school in '94 and I remember being openly gay in the States had quite a different reception than it does now. Would it have been possible to come out of the closet?

I graduated High School in 04 and being openly gay here in the states had a different reception than it does now so yea. That being said considering the fact it's still not really acceptable to come out in Korea I'm thinking it couldn't have been wise to come out in 1994.

starting to watch this because of Chilbongie and oh my, Garbage took me by surprise.
I love how he notices the littlest thing and at some point he's so cool too. Gosh I love to hate him, but I can't really.
They're also really expressive around each other, at least Garbage is to Na Jung.
But nevertheless I am 100% convinced the husband is Chilbongie, I just love him and I love how he's so cute and adorable ♥

It's such a good weekender show. I think I might be more invested in this than the dailies' MFC & Heirs. How can I not? It's quite amusing. The bumpkins possess qualities that'd make your innards hurl---blunt,loud,obnoxious, often vulgar, & partly revolting ( phonebooth peeing, lawn pooping, & fish throwing?), yet their thoughtfulness toward each other just warms the heart. Well, sam cheon po might need a few lessons on that one. Hehe

Binggurrae totally threw me off. Guess my gaydar is pretty rusty. Or the signals were faint that I didn't picked up right away.

Squee! This series makes me smile on the weekends. (And makes me wake up earlier to watch it before I begin the day, ha.) Ep 6 solidified my love for the show, actually. They seem to be zooming past the months, which makes me consider they're actually going to spend quite some time between 94 and '02?

Jung woo's acting is incredible. That scene with the kids killed me. Pretty sure if Na Jung had seen, she would've been in foetal position for days because oppa is so perfect ....... and then he'd probably walk into her room with shorts on backwards and looking for his glasses, and she'd be like why???

And I didn't know so much could be done with moony eyes and adoring grins ;;;

I didn't want to root for Garbage because well I was definitely rooting for Yoon Jae in 1997. Though it is different because I think Chilbongie will provide real believable competition. Because let's face it to me at least no matter what anyone says in 1997 Dae Woong never liked Shi Won, he was just projecting his feelings for her sister on her, and Shi Won never liked him she was just running away from how she felt for Yoon Jae.

My ultimate ship is Oppa with Na Jung but damn it Chilbongie is so endearingly adorable I'm not too sure I'd be that upset if he ends up her husband. (i'd be a little upset...).

In the last series the way the oppa was set up kind of kept me from shipping them. This one is not soo much complicated.

Ugh I kind of love everyone in this. I hate being kept questioning who the end game is but I love the show too much to drop it.

Freaking adore Garbage! Can I have him if Na jung won't?!

I love love the cameos in this episode. It's like a big shout-out and *winkwink* to those who followed and watched Answer Me 1997 again and again. When I watched the promo for this episode last week and I saw a female med intern taking off her stockings in front of oppa-garbage, I was immediately reminded of the sister-in-law in AM1997. And here surprise, surprise, it's the same character. She does hate those stockings, doesn't she?

I'm still on Team Oppa right now (because how can you not be, with Oppa being so sweet and treating Na Jung so special, he really is that one big brother those of us who don't have one would like to have) Nevertheless, with this episode, I did have 'that' feeling that Oppa might be gay, not a lot just some fan-deduction here and there, which is not that conclusive since all of this could be explained with Oppa's personality. Anyway, I'm SO SO looking forward to Episode 6 now.
