Yoon Shi-yoon to play prime minister’s aide
by girlfriday
Gah, now this show is adding people I like. Upcoming new odd-couple rom-com Prime Minister and I (that’d be Lee Beom-soo and Yoon-ah as the odd couple, and don’t try to tell me it’s not odd) has just added Yoon Shi-yoon (Flower Boy Next Door) and the younger Lee Min-ho (Sword and Flower) to its cast. AGH, Yoon Shi-yoon, are you gonna make me watch this? And am I going to regret it?
The new KBS Monday-Tuesday drama comes from the writers of Sweet 18 and My Fair Lady, and the PD of Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek. It stars Lee Beom-soo as a prime minister and single father of three who’s a pro at his job and a total mess at home. Yoon-ah plays the nanny/governess/Julie Andrews person who saves him by getting a handle on the kids. I think she does it without musical numbers, though it was being called a Sound of Music-esque show, so who knows.
Yoon Shi-yoon will join the cast as the prime minister’s chief of staff, a member of the top 1% elite civil servants in the country, with a sharp brain and perfect looks to boot. It’s hard to picture just because I’m still seeing Enrique in him, but I suppose this is as different a role as he can get. Lee Min-ho has been cast as a hungry reporter who’s always chasing that next feature, and Chae Jung-ahn (When A Man Loves) plays the prime minister’s public relations officer. If Yoon-ah’s character is a former reporter, she might have a connection to Lee Min-ho, while Chae Jung-ahn will have a university connection to Lee Beom-soo, besides obviously being on his staff.
I love Lee Beom-soo, but I’m honestly going to have a hard time not rooting for the more age-appropriate romantic pairings in this love square… pentagon… thingy. Who knows, the show could totally surprise me. Stranger things have happened, right?
Prime Minister and I follows Mi-rae’s Choice in December.

I was just aishing all ovver the place over Yoon Si Yoon news as the second lead-I am assuming- and this post popped up. I had absolutely no interest in watching this drama but YSY, and now this LMH too? Sigh. I love YSY, but I do not know that I am down for this. I could care less about the age thing, just the lead actor and actress don't interest me. Glad he's back in dramaland tho.

Now I'm looking forward to this...
Lee Bum Soo and Yoon Shi Yoon!!!
And although I would have preferred some other actress for the leading role, I kind of find it appealing that the drama has an odd couple....because I like this type more than the noona romance...

Hmmmm....writers of Sweet 18, eh?
Sounds like they like the older man/younger woman set up, then.
That was handled well, of course, having LDW be the older man didn't hurt.
But I really don't want to see YSY get hurt.
Angry, yes, I really like to see YSY angry. He's smoking hot when that happens. Flashback to M2F...sigh...

Sweet 18 as a rom-com, I found it funny and enjoyable. They way it was written - the writing style somehow reminded me of Delightful girl Chun-hyang. I think I will watch this drama since the writer is the one who wrote Sweet 18. Not to mention Yoon Shi-yoon is in it (but whyyyy is he the second lead, T.T no.. now i'm having second lead syndrome already)

Since age gap is becoming the new norm in couples and since I have nothing against that, I will ship YSY with CJA already. Personal request: Let's have a couples date where the 2 men impress the others customers in the restaurant by showing off gentleman manners.

Yoona? Yoonot!
There have been plenty of romances with age disparities that have worked beautifully (two of my faves are telenovelas from Colombia starring the same man - Victor Mallarino, though in 1 he's not the romantic lead but the antagonist - if you get a chance, check out La Baby Sister and Porque Diablos), but man, oh man, there's just something about Yoona that I cannot get behind. Not in this, not in anything.

I don't find the couple that odd. I would even call it realistic. You know, i observed that politicians, celebrities,(mainly males) tend to go for partners which are quite younger. There are so many celebrities in South Korea that got married with age difference more than 10 years.

it's supposed to be sound of music-esque?
well then it's obvious why they hired yoona: she can teach the kids how to mop the floors while dancing to gee, and archery while dancing to hoot.
all koreans, from 9 month old babies to 90 year old grandmas, will be captivated by the drama because each catchy dance number will double as a psa for a productive life.

what the hell is Yoon Shi Yoon thinking, i can't comprehend why he agreed to star in this drama as the SECOND LEAD worse when the LEAD is Yoona. He should have taken a lead role after his lead roles in Baker King, MTF & FBND he take up this one as a 2nd lead only behind Yoona? I have nothing against Yoona but her acting isn't that good seriously to be leading a drama while an excellent actor like YSY is just her 2nd lead.
No matter how much i love YSY i'm gonna pass this one..

You know, I'm a big fan of YSY but as talented as he is, I'm realistic: M2F had low ratings & FBND didn't do a lot of buzz in SK, that's a fact. When you have to accept a variety show to pay the bills... I'm glad he is back in a drama where he can act with one of the bests: LBS. I'll sort my veggies on that plate, if the heroine happens to be unwatchable.
Also, better an interesting second male lead than a lame main character. I'm sure he will do well with what he is given.

He didn't take advantage of whatever momentum High Kick 2 and Baker King had. It happens. And it's strange to compare a female lead to a male second lead role.
And Yoon Shiyoon's not some acting genius, though. He's good but he's not THAT good. He initially lucked out with projects that had awesome ratings.

When Girlfriday was swooning over the "noona romance" in I Hear Your Voice I commented on how it was curious that such an age-difference pairing would probably be frowned upon if the younger lover had been a girl. A lot of beanies disagreed with me. Now, here we go. Girlfriday: "I love Lee Beom-soo, but I’m honestly going to have a hard time not rooting for the more age-appropriate romantic pairings in this love square…" So, a romance between two grown adults - and I hope people agree that a woman in her twenties is an adult - is not "age-appropriate" if we are talking about an "ajusshi romance"? But a romance between an older woman and a schoolboy is fine? I have to say I think it would be more honest if Girlfriday and other beanies who share her taste just admitted that they are turned off by older older guys and have the hots for younger studs. That's totally fine. Just don't couch it in this moral language of what is "age-appropriate" or not, it comes of as hypocritical...

GF didn't clearly said the YoonA and LBS pairing is NOT age-appropriate. She said "MORE age-appropriate pairing" pertaining to YoonA-YSY and LBS-CJA pairings. If you would think about it, those are MORE age-appropriate and YoonA and LBS are less age-appropriate but not really INAPPROPRIATE. I guess, if you ask me, what's more inappropriate is pairing those two considering the difference in their acting talent. But that just me, hating on YoonA.

I completely agree with you about the double standard issue (not only here but generally). I knew it would come to the front scene in one way or another. There is 2 aspects at play: The level of tolerance for "age gap romances" from the audience and the personal taste of the viewers (eww, I couldn't!). For me, as long as the story is about 2 consenting adults, I see no problem. May it be in Dramaland or in RL.

I think it's everyone's right not to like a big age gap (it was not more than ~5 years in 'I Hear Your Voice') or like older men.
And I don't mind how girlfriday put it, because she clearly said she simply doesn't like it.
But many users here and in other places act as you say. Like this is about more than personal taste. I've even read comments about pedophilia and that's frankly offending to the actors, not to mention victims of real pedophiles. Imagine that. A 23-year-old adult and we get these comments.
So I agree there. For someone to find 20 years odd in terms of dating, they are either very very clueless about the world and probably bellow 20 themselves, come from a very conservative culture or are simply projecting their own rejection of the idea onto some non-existent moral issue.
It's fine not liking something, but at least have the guts to admit it, instead of trying to pass it off as commonly unacceptable or a bad writing choice.
If everyone is such a feminist that hates the wicked old man touching the young innocent girl so much, how come no one mentions the really problematic issues of the premise? Like how a young career woman will be turned into a maid/mom for hire for a powerful figure, just to keep her job (I assume)? Or how a single father will be portrayed as a useless parent until a woman steps in, reinforcing the concept that a vagina is a prerequisite for raising kids and its sole purpose?
There are many things to worry about here, if the people who make the pedophilia comments are so genuinely concerned, but I don't see them talking about those.

Yes, I agree.
There's no right or wrong in what you like. Especially when it come to a show's romantic couple. Who you end up "shipping" is probably based on a lot of different factors - including things like looks, physical chemistry, and so on - and the characters' age might well be a part of that. I think we would be lying to ourselves if we didn't admit that this is true.
But it's important to bear in mind that factors like these are aesthetic in nature, not moral. And just as important: they are subjective, not universal. I'm in my thirties and must confess I sometimes have a hard time getting into a pairing where where the male lead is played by a very young actor. Not because of the young age per se, but because Korean guys in their early twenties often - to my Western eyes - look like they are in their teens. This can, in some cases, be a hurdle for my shipping. But I don't it find it strange that other viewers, perhaps younger than myself, are not affected adversely by this particular factor. Because it is just an individual bias on my part. It's all about what tickles my aesthetic fancy. I certainly wouldn't say it is "wrong" to have a male lead who plays an adult male lead, but looks like he's 14.
I would also agree with the second part of your comment. If your political views skew towards the liberal side of the spectrum there are a lot of issues in kdramas that must rub you more in the wrong way than the age-difference between men and women. The ubiquitous class difference found in almost all dramas, social hierarchy defining people's worth, ageism (and the absurd relations between kids and parents it foster) - and, yes, sexism. But again, I think we should be honest and admit that the principal reason we watch these shows is to engage in romance fantasies. And while the age-difference between characters can, as we have discussed, be an important factor in what couples you can get into, the political factors mentioned here do not really impact shipping. So, it becomes less of an interest in our discussion of kdrama shows.

"The ubiquitous class difference found in almost all dramas"
This is one way in which I really prefer kdrama to American TV. I find it amazing to watch shows that even include people of different classes interacting with each other, with "good" and "bad" characters of all classes. It might be nice if it weren't so extreme.. maybe more middle class characters please?... but overall, class is actually a front-and-center issue in kdramas, where with very few exceptions, American TV is about middle and upper-middle class people, and it rarely tackles how class and money effect the everyday lives of the characters (beyond occasional poor=unpopular tropes).
Yes loan-sharks are a little corny. But I like that you see kdramas where a major theme is what it's like to have a million part-time jobs, or to not be able to get surgery because of $, or avoiding creditors, or whatever. I really appreciate that these are center to dramas, where in US TV, it's all "Oh I'm poor, but I spend all my time hanging out at a coffee shop and cooking in my multi-million-dollar apartment." Sometimes you get episodic handling of these themes in cop shows or medical shows, but it rarely involves a main character.

I actually was "meh" about the leads because of their acting gap more so than their age. However, I understand people's initial reaction because they simply do not look good together [at first], per say. I mean, LBS is such a seasonal actor that can transform himself into anything, playing the love interest of someone who is still very green like Yoona is a ... total-turn of. Anyway, I'm happy YSY is in it and I will definitely give it a chance!
It's K-dramaland afterall, nothing is ever "normal".

So, a question... If there was a woman that is 43 and a guy that is 23 would you feel the same? Honestly, though...
Don't get me wrong, i admit I don't like huge age gaps between two people that are a couple. For me, anything more than 10 years of difference is just gross.... But that is only my personal opinion. It doesn't mean that it's right!
However, there is humongous double standard here. Most people are ok with the huge age gap when it's the guy that is older but if the woman would be 20 years older than a guy, then they would find it distributing...

I would be 100% ok with it myself. Why should it be an issue? 23 is legal and depending on the person, can be very responsible, self-knowing and mature too. And at the end of the day, who are any of us to say who others should and shouldn't date, unless there is obvious abuse going on? Say you don't like it and move on.
We laugh about the age topic with my mother, because I prefer the idea of slightly older men while she has always been attracted to younger ones (if I remember well, she dated someone 17 years her junior at some point). You should see us watch dramas. Complete reversal in preferences. :P
But you are right in saying women get less rights on such issues and don't usually have the blessings of society for them, especially in conservative countries. Which is why noona romances are very important. They promote women's right to also date as they wish, without being persecuted for it.

I know some pairs (in real life) that have a huge (15+ and 20+) age difference and none of them worked out.
The usual reason was, when love passed (which usually happens in marriages and long relationships), there was just not a lot common ground for them to stay together... One was eg. 60 and the other was 40. One was a grandpa/grandma and the other was in their prime. Their goals and life styles became very different.
That is why couples with a huge age difference usually don't work.
Anyways, as for LBS/Yoona pairing, if you think about it, when he was 21 years old, Yoona was 1 year old... One! She was a baby!

Lol are you joking?
The age gap between the leads on this show is 20 years, while the average age gap for noona romances is 6-10 years. First point. Second point, age gaps in relationships where the man is older are ubiquitous; age gaps where the woman is older are more frequent, so much so that it is a genre unto itself. Third point: people like the age gap in noona romances because it upsets/plays around with the power dynamics between the genders, but oftentimes even this is cast aside and the guy, even though he's younger, is shown to be in many ways smarter, more capable, more mature, etc. than the woman.
There is no hypocrisy going on here. There is no conspiracy against older male actors or characters. We all love Lee Bum Soo. Since when has the world ever been against older men and younger women? That is the accepted norm.
You know what I find curious? The claim that folks who openly say they like noona romances are acting morally superior, when everything in this comment (putting noona romance in quotes, describing liking noona romances as a taste) is aimed at shaming folks for what they like.

I confess I thought twice about whether or not to respond to you. Given the fact that I not only in my initial comment, but also in my response to Orion, explicitly stated that you can't fault people for what they like, and yet you accuse me of "shaming folks for what they like", I have serious doubts about your ability to comprehend what I write.
But let's give it a third and final try: It's perfectly fine for folks to like love stories where the woman is older than the man. I like them myself sometimes. But it is hypocritical to like such stories and then write that older men-younger women are not "age-appropriate". To talk about the age difference as appropriate or not takes the discussion out of the aesthetic realm - what you like - and into the moral (what is right and wrong). And you can't say you find younger men-older women appropriate, but older men-younger women inappropriate, without being a hypocrite. Simple as that.
My impression is that you and I view this whole question so differently that it is meaningless for us to discuss it. You say people like noona romances because they subvert drama tropes. My guess is it has more to do with the kind of men people like to fantasize about. l suspect that the reason there's an outpouring of hate for pairings like the one in this drama, but enthusiasm for most noona dramas, comes down to the demographics of Dramabeans readers: mostly women in their twenties who happen to be more attracted to men in their own age-range, and therefore find the thought of dating an older guy distasteful. But who knows? We can't exactly assess who of us is right, and who is wrong. To go on would just result in a pointless screaming match. So let's agree to disagree.

I agree on the concept of preference. Not all fans watch for the guys, but many do. Noona romances are loved, because the women watching them get exactly the type of men they like.
This, on the other hand, has a man most will not. I am not saying everyone is like this, but the fact that a majority of the drama fandom is more about the hotties than about other things is the conclusion I have come to.
Which is perfectly fine and up to individual taste and reasons for watching, but those reasons should be acknowledged for what they are. Personal and based on preference.
These romances are not, therefore, age-inappropriate. They are you-inappropriate. Be it Lee Beom Soo and Yoona or Uhm Jung Hwa and Song Joong Ki. The type of which has not happened yet, but would be very cool if it did. ;)

Lee Boem Soo is born in 1970, Yoona is born in 1990. There is not only a 20 years difference in the appearance level, there is certainly a huge gap in the acting range.
Aside from that, if it's well written, and they manage to have a great chemistry you won't hear me complaining. I am really afraid that LBS will have more screen chemistry with CJA, she may not be the best actress out there but she has this great onscreen present

ooh, i like all these actors. I can't really say YSY "shouldn't be second lead" though -- as some folks are saying. LSB has been round a long time. And there comes a time when a cast as a lot of good actors so somebody has to be "second lead."
I'm all for the romance if it works. I tend to dislike older men and younger women stories because there are so many powerful men who toss away older wives for younger version. That tends to be common in many societies and am not a lover of being pulled into a drama which showcases the fantasies of older men. I've often gotten annoyed at dramas which show older guys romancing younger women but the annoyance stems from a feeling of sadness about how older women are oppressed. Even when I was a kid I always thought the dishonoring of older women and the trophying of an "adoring/perfect" young woman very disturbing. AND THIS IS WHY I LIKE NOONA ROMANCES. Noona romances honor age in women and honors what older men throw away.
But all that said. The set up in this drama seems to be that this is a good man who lost his wife. By death apparently. From what i see so far, there is no "evil" discarded villainous ex-wife around to "justify" a divorce.
So am ready to see it. thanks.

Well, I am not thrilled with the leads, female lead, to be exact, of this upcoming drama. If only they cast more mature actress as to play the 'Julie Andrews's' part, I think that would be better. But having Shi yoon the panda here might change my not-thrilled-at-all to okay-I-think-I-am-gonna-give-it-a-go. No promise to watch it until the end, though.
Shi yoon gives strong perfomance in Me Too, Flower, though the drama seems to be underrated and all. I love his character there.
