Why Do Dramas Do That?: The Book Launch!
by javabeans
Guess what, we wrote a book!
And it only took us a gazillion years! We finally got Part 1 written up (thanks monkeys) and ready for launch, and we promise we won’t take a gazillion more years to roll out Parts 2 and 3. Or maybe we promise to try. Because yunno… there are DRAMAS to watch.
In case you missed the first announcements, our ebook series is called Why Do Dramas Do That? and it’s about… uh… why dramas do that. We cover a whole host of our favorite (and okay, not-so-favorite) drama tropes, like oppas and birth secrets and live shoot madness, and dramaland’s regular company of players, like the Candy and her noble idiot prince.
The book is available via Amazon and Smashwords (links below), and between those two distributors you should be able to find a format compatible to read on your Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPhone, iPad, PC, Macbook, or Android device.
TO BUY:
(In addition to Amazon.com in the States, you’ll be able to find Why Do Dramas Do That? Part 1 internationally on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, Amazon.it, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.in, Amazon.ca, Amazon.com.br, and Amazon.com.mx. Outside of those countries, Smashwords is what you’ll want.)

Downloaded the Kindle App, signed up for Amazon, and bought an e-book all for the very first time just so I can get my hands on this! Can't wait to start reading it on my ipod touch whenever we don't do anything in class. It does feel weird seeing no pictures while browsing through the ebook. I'm just so used to always having screencaps while reading DB posts.

Congrats! Off to buy the book after this post...
Tropes I hope are in future editions:
Koreans sleeping so deeply. Dramas make it look they all could sleep through a tornado in a trailer park.
*And although you'll avoid this like the plague*
The trope's possible unintended consequences: has it so influenced Korean youth, that a young woman would think it credible to claim she could sleep through part of a sexual encounter in order to shed responsibility for participation and/or allege it was 'assault'?
I don't bring this up to sensationalize or start a torrent of debate about the specific situation that this site has wisely sidestepped. The topic is strictly raised in the broader context of a possible sociological impact of this trope on youth thought and culture.

$1.99 price = 35% royalties = $0.70 royalties
$2.99 price = 70% royalties = $2.09 royalties
this is a pricing mistake in my opinion. $1 more will not matter much to the fans are willing to buy the ebook (that's a price of a soda).
But to the author (javabeans and girlfrieday), it's the difference between $0.70 royalties and $2.09 royalties. That's $1.39 difference.
I will wait for the book to go up to $2.99 so you will get more bang for your buck before buying.
....Most fans here would be very willing to pay an extra $1 so you can get $1.39 more in royalties.
p.s. Congratulations on the success

That's AMAZING!!!

Follow up note.....you can get advise on the pricing info from Kboards writers cafe
kboards.com/index.php?board=60.0
Easy to register and make a new thread....
Most people there who have been self-publishing successfully would advise you to change the price to $2.99
The ebook is 95 pages and a lot of hard work/research. That is worth the $2.99 price. And we fans love javabeans/girlfriday, that the $1 extra we have to pay is worth paying for.
LOL.....As a reader, I am advising the author to INCREASE the price...That's how strongly I feel about this.
p.s.
If you change the $1.99 price to $2.99, please do it at Smashwords too because of Amazon Kindle TOS agreement. If you price it at $1.99 in Smashwords but $2.99 in Kindle, it would be a TOS violation.

Third follow up (since I feel strongly about this).
Here's Smashwords pricing data from 120,000 titles. They have found that pricing at $1.99 is the worst thing an author could do according to their data.
http://blog.smashwords.com/2013/05/new-smashwords-survey-helps-authors.html
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fasfCeU8RSo/UYqAHuML_zI/AAAAAAAAB98/TH9IyLoHnqQ/s320/how+does+price+impact+ebook+sales+volume.png
So, for example you'll see in the chart that $.99 is 3.9x. This means that a $.99 book will on average sell 3.9 times as many books as a book priced over $10.00. A $2.99 book sells about 4 times as many units.
Note how books priced between $1.00 and $1.99 significantly underperform books priced at $2.99 and $3.99. $1.99 appears to be a black hole.

Congratulations on the launch! Would you consider making it available through the IBooks app in ITunes? My friend and I are creating a Korean drama club at our school and this will be a great reference to have more insights on dramas

Congrats!
I just bought it and will read it as soon as I can connect my kindle to some wifi. Being in Europe I bought it from the amazon.co.uk website, so I didn't know about the American pricetag.... and then realized it could've been bought on the French amazon anyway though I was stupid enough not to check it first! I just hope you didn't underprice it (it that even a word? guess not.)
Anyway, I'm sure I'll praise you girls when I read it!

My wife & I bought our copy and I've read it carefully,
and it's wonderful. Well done! Congratulations! I
can't wait for parts 2 and 3.
One thing I like about it is the copious use of examples from
dramas I've seen and from dramas I want to see. The list
at the end, giving all cited dramas, is a big plus.

Congrats! I just bought my copy and will read tomorrow (my body weren't yelling at me to go to bed already--it thinks nine hours of k-dramas in a row is enough for one night).
I prefer books made of ink and killed trees over pixels and photons, not to mention this will make a great reference for my writing, so may I print out Part One (and all subsequent parts) for my personal use?

Just bought your book for my Kindle. I'm really looking forward to reading and rereading it. I stayed up way too late tonight watching Master's Sun finale, for my 5am wake up call, but it was so worth it. I'm sure your book will be just as satisfying and amusing. I really enjoyed meeting you at the Seattle meetup, and wish you the best in all that you do! (And I too feel that you have underpriced this; I would have paid $2.99 or even $3.99, though I would not want those in tough financial circumstances to be left out of all the fun.) You ladies are worth so much more! Congratulations! And thank you!

Here's a question I hope you can answer in part 2 or part 3:
What's with the index-finger forehead push, as seen a
zillion times in say, Secret Garden and in the last episode
of Master's Sun. Usually done by the guy to a sleeping
girl. Is this a thing parents do in Korea? (I can't help thinking,
do they have subcuteaneous switches on their foreheads,
similar to the power switch on my laptop?)

I bought the book. Loved it. Now I'm waiting for part 2. And I'm asking you guys to phrase answer:
1) Do Koreans really sleep in their daytime/regular clothes? I've seen a couple of statements in interviews that make me think they do such as "[insert idol name here] just ran in and started stripping his clothes off and fell into bed". And in the drama "Because It's the First Time", the characters don't understand why another friend is always in his underwear when his parents throw him out of the house. They don't understand his answer "They always wake me up to put be out." Another friend pipes up to explain: "He always sleeps in his under pants".
2) It is killing me to know what the weird devices are in hair salons. I'm not talking about the ones that hook up to the curlers (although those do look like something the Borg use to attach the Borg Queen into her body); but the space-age looking thingee that has three circular parts (arms?) that pass over the head. I've googled it but I can't describe it well enough to get any results. I have screen captured it but it doesn't seem like I can post the pic here. It's beige in color and it has (holes? lights? ). Maybe it's holes for air, however, I've never seen any windblown effects as its passing over the head (haven't seen any lights coming out of the holes either fir that matter). Most recently I saw a youtube video with Rain sitting under one of these machine with his hair in twists (foil wrapped twists I think although the finished results had no color highlights so maybe not foil). The end result was very fuzzy hair but no curls or twists.
