Pasta team returns with new drama Miss Korea

New drama alert: MBC is lining up its winter Wednesday-Thursday drama, helmed by the PD-writer team behind Pasta. It’s called Miss Korea, and it’s about a group of neighborhood ajusshis who set out to turn a young lady from their small town into the next Miss Korea. Why am I picturing a group of grumpy ajusshis swathed in glitter and why is it awesome? The new drama is set to come around in December after Medical Top Team, and so far Lee Sung-min (Golden Time) has signed on to play one of the members of Team Beauty Queen.

It’s not surprising that he’s joining the project, since it’ll be the fourth time he’s teaming up with PD Kwon Seok-jang of Golden Time, My Princess, and Pasta. Writer Seo Sook-hyang has since penned Romance Town, and will be reuniting with her Pasta cohorts. It sounds like a fun idea, mostly because of the misfit ajusshi thing and the strangeness of them as stage moms in the pageant circuit.

The make-or-break-it element will really be the actress they cast as the future beauty queen, since she’ll have to be believably normal to some degree. I’m assuming we’ll have an ugly duckling makeover transformation (in fact it’s basically a makeover sequence AS a drama), but I can see it taking more than one montage if they go for a Miss Congeniality type of deal. We’ll have to wait for more story details to find out the why behind the town’s efforts to turn this girl into Miss Korea, but I can see My Princess’s fluffy charm working for a drama like this.

Miss Korea will follow Medical Top Team in December.

Oh yes, I totally like wardrobe-transformation scenes in movies and dramas the best. But I do hope they don't pick an already gorgeous girl, y'know? No one with a plastic face, at least.

have you heard that this project is being helmed by SM C&C? i'm gonna go ahead and guess that they're going to add in a flurry of SM artists now... :( since thats what they usually do. (and it usually fails too which makes me sad because i love lee sung min (loved him as the King!) and want him to be in successful projects)

the premise sounds promising but it'll probably be the actors that will make or break this. (the main actors i mean... LOL)

I would only find the casting of an SNSD member acceptable in this case if it was Sooyoung. The girl can act, and she has the right look and height to make a believable girl next door/beauty pageant contestant.

You're right about her age, but that's too bad. She has a very natural, down-to-earth beauty that would work really well in the make-over. More importantly, she is such a delightful and versatile actress.

The female lead is supposed to be a girl, so wouldn't the actress need to be in her teens/early 20s? That's when people actually compete in beauty pageants.

The female lead is rumoured to be Lee Yeon-hee. As this drama is produced by her agency SM, she is leading candidate.
Also rumoured is Gong Yoo as one of the ajusshis.

I'm iffy with Lee Yeon Hee, but was actually pretty impressed with her in her most recent project Gu Family Book. So that casting wouldn't totally turn me off.

Now Gong Yoo on the other hand is a definite watch for me. And I say this as someone who watched every episode of that drama called Big. So if he's in, so am I.

I've liked the other dramas by this team, and the premise sounds cute. With the right cast this could be adorable. Fingers crossed. I'll keep an eye out for this one.

Yeah, I don't really get the Lee Yeon Hee hate. Her acting skills are really no more iffy than those of any number of young male actors but unfortunately she has no Y chromosome/washboard abs to be given the benefit of the doubt.

She wouldn't be my choice by a long shot but she's not so bad that I wouldn't check out a drama just because she's in it. I thought she was charming, if nothing else, in Gu Family Book.

True, she's no better than many young actresses out there and has a pretty face. But personally, I find her so boring in all aspects in general. Her role in GFB was the only time I've ever been mildly impressed by her. She could've been interesting in Paradise Ranch but severely overacted.

I think she would be good choice since she has that charming girl next door aura. And I think, she could also portray a sassy model if she wants.

As it was already said below, she was very charming in Gu Family Book and I wished for her to get a role where she can proof herself.

A lot will depend on the motivation behind the project "Turning-villiage girl-into-Miss Korea" to make the transformation believable.

She is rumored to be in the female lead for Jang Geun Suk in Beautiful/ Pretty Man!
Although, I like Lee Yeo-hee and give her more than the benefit of the doubt, Jung So Min might be the smarter choice. Plus, the female lead in Beautiful Man sounds kind of dull so I would rather see her in another role (and far away from Jang Geun Suk of whom I am not the biggest fan).

It 's kind of Pigmalion story mixed with Miss Congeniality .I love those story with the ugly heroine breaking her chrysalis and transforms into a beautifull lady.

I really love the premise, though honestly I'd be much more excited if this were by a different writer. I've seen most of her dramas, but none have really grabbed me, or left a lasting impression . . . here's hoping this one finally manages what the others could not!!

Since I don't actually know anyone besides the SNSD or f(x) girls there. It's way better option and am happy Yoona is not an option . EEveryone else can act so I pretty much don't mind who does the female lead from SM C&C.

jung so min could be good! she is cute and charming. Park Ha Sun is quiet pretty too! I hope Lee Yeon Hee will not be casted as she not have that beauty pageant material. Yeah she got the height but not for body and beauty smile....and most idol in SM is skinny! Doesn't miss korea need to have georgeous body? Damn...they should just cast honey lee...haha

I'm thinking Kim Yoo Ri who just finished playing Tae Yi Ryung in The Master's Sun. She can be both glamorous and dorky looking at the same time. She may be a little up there age-wise (1984 puts her at 29), but she's only been playing minor roles and just now second female lead. I think she's ready to play the female lead.
