OCN’s Ghost Detective delays broadcast
by girlfriday
So… OCN’s newest crime procedural Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo-young (or just Cheo-young, as it’s being referred to more commonly) was technically supposed to air this week, according to initial casting and pre-production press. But OCN has decided to delay the broadcast, and not by a couple of weeks, but a couple of months. Hm. What is wrong with this drama that they’re not telling us?
The official line is that they just need more time to complete it and raise its quality, but that’s a whole bucket of vague in a dramaland that lives by the live-shoot. Not that that’s always the thing to strive for, and at least on cable there’s a bit of leeway to make your own rules. Still, I wonder what the production’s issues are that they’re pushing the premiere so far. With a ghost-centric mystery thriller, my go-to guess is that it’s budget concerns over CG, but who knows. Maybe they decided that there were too many ghost-seers in dramaland lately. I sure could use a break from the theme.
The drama is being prepped for an early 2014 broadcast now, and reportedly continues to shoot. It’s a 10-episode original series from the PD of Arrest King and one of the writers of Joseon X-Files. It looks far darker than the other ghost-seeing dramas we’ve had this year, with more of a horror bent and a crime thriller backbone. The short teasers don’t show us much (I’m getting the sense that this is evidence of the slow progress on set?) but they are going for chills and thrills.
The series stars Oh Ji-ho (God of the Workplace) as a detective who’s been able to see, hear, and touch ghosts since birth. He goes from elite detective to lowly district cop after a tragic accident, and though he shuts himself off from the world, one day he talks back to the schoolgirl ghost who keeps following him (played by idol group Secret’s Jeon Hyo-sung) and gets caught up in cases involving the “dead signs” that ghosts leave behind. He eventually works with his partner Oh Ji-eun (King of Dramas), solving spooky cases and rejoining the land of the living.
Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo-young will (hopefully, maybe?) air early next year on OCN.

I hope this will air next year because it really looks a lot darker than the other ghost stuff we had recently.
As an avid horror fan I'd love me some dark and spooky drama!

Thanks for the news. I was wondering what had happened to that production. We'll never know the real reasons of the delay anyway... At least it's not cancelled.
Be good, Show and see you in 2014.

See... this is the statement that makes me sad. Why will we never know? Is there no k-drama equivalent to E!'s "True Hollywood Story"? If not there totally should be. ;)
(Of course, it'd be years before the real dirt got spilled, but I'm betting it'd be fascinating when it finally happened.)

Maybe it's because October seems to be a super competitive month for eyes on TV screens, what with so many trendy dramas coming on air - Heirs, Answer Me, Mi-rae's Choice, Medical Top Team... I'm just guessing.

I am getting a bit tired of OCN's basically-a-crime-series-with-a-gimmick-thrown in dramas, but this does seem interesting. I just wish it could be more 'Coma' and less 'Vampire Prosecutor'. But let's first hope it will all go well and we'll eventually get to see it aired.

I believe OCN is a themed channel that only airs crime/procedural dramas and (action?) movies. Was "Coma" more straight and serious than their other dramas?

Thanks for the news!! I was wondering why OCN was so quiet about this... It's a shame it's not airing, it was on my "definitely-check-out"-list. Heir's to hoping it does get aired eventually. Oups. typo ^^

Was wondering where this one was. So many that I had been watching have, or are finishing. Cannot say though that the trailers do much for me though. Guess will have to be patient and wait for it to come and get me?

It's sad news, but I guess it's good news from a production perspective. By the time it airs, it will be fully produced with all the episodes(hopefully) filmed so the cast & crew won't have to worry about the live-shoot system that plagues so many dramas.

I'm waiting for this. OCN is like AMC with a touch of HBO. Now that Breaking Bad has ended, I need some drama fix.

Man, this one looks like it will be a lot scarier than the ones that have aired so far! Neither of those scared me in the least. But this one might actually keep me up at night. Not sure I could actually handle scary---LOL.

Just a nitpick, but the Korean characters say Cheo-YONG, not Cheo-young.

Wow. Looks good now that I've seen the trailer. To be honest, I've been pretty ghosted-out since the last two dramas but this one definitely looks darker. Hope it goes along the Vampire Prosecutor road.
That trailer with the lift/ elevator reminded me so much of the service elevation way back when I lived in HK. I always knew there was something wrong with that thing, especially when I pressed my floor (4) and it ends up taking me to the unlit hallway on the 10th floor.....

Haven't seen too much of Oh Ji-Ho other than his Running Man appearance, but the clips I've seen confirm my impression there. No classic facial features, but he oozes testosterone like Choi Min Soo or Han Jung-soo. Dramas need them all with all the pretty boys.

Hopefully it'll be darker than most of the ghost dramas we've seen so far.
