Master’s Sun: Episode 16
by javabeans
We’re almost at the end!
Even though I’d never argue that the one-episode extension did this show (or any show) good, I did find myself pleasantly surprised with how the show seems to feel on track with its pacing as we head into the finale. Granted it wasn’t exactly a fast pace and I do wonder how the writers had intended for the story to unfold given the original episode count, but in a situation where they had to fill up one more hour, I think what we have generally works. Then again, I’m also used to the (in)famous Hong Sisters Finale Week Slowdown, so I’m just glad this is one of the better versions of the scenario. (Fingers crossed. I didn’t just jinx us for tomorrow, did I?)

EPISODE 16 RECAP
Gong-shil makes her pained departure from Joong-won, who accepts her decision to leave despite feeling crushed by it. She gets sent off by her sister while he sits in the terminal dumbly after she’s gone, where Secretary Kim finds him.
Joong-won says that he thought everything would be fine if he shouldered the burden for the relationship, but she’d said she was hurting and scared: “Thinking about it, I don’t think I have once tried to understand her position or take it into consideration.” Secretary Kim asks rather incredulously if that’s what he’s doing now, sending her away out of consideration and understanding.
But Joong-won scoffs, “Are you crazy? Send Tae Gong-shil away? Why would I do something I’ve never once done in 34 years of life at this crucial moment?” He bolts up, saying that he has no intention of letting her go all nicely and thoughtfully and stalks off with purpose. Yaaaaaayyy! Also, walk faster!
Joong-won calls her repeatedly while walking toward her gate, and misses her just as she passes through. Aaaaarrrrrrghghghghhghhdaskjf;lfajkdf. He keeps calling, but gets no response.
On the plane, Chun-hee asks whether she was able to settle things well with Joong-won, and she sighs that no, she had to force herself to leave. It’s a different story for Yi-ryung, who’s on the same flight and clinging to her phone as long as possible, grumbling at Kang Woo for not calling.
Joong-won decides to follow on the next flight to LA just as Kang Woo storms up to chastise him for letting her go, then barks that he’s going to get her back. Secretary Kim worries that he’ll lose her in the interim, and Kang Woo hands over a handheld device—a satellite tracker. He’d slipped its mate into Gong-shil’s bag earlier just in case, which is hilarious but also really nice of him. Kang Woo basically orders Joong-won to get her back, and Joong-won breaks offers to rehire him with double pay.
Yi-ryung spots Gong-shil on the plane and has a brief chat, while also givin gChun-hee the narrowed-eye once-over. Is it too much to hope that she’s a Gong-shil-Joong-won shipper too?
Ha, and then she calls Kang Woo to inform him that Gong-shil is on her flight. It hasn’t taken off yet… muahaha. Joong-won takes over the call and instructs Yi-ryung to act her little heart out. Oh, I hope this is good.
So Yi-ryung collapses in the aisle, gasping loudly in pain, bringing Gong-shil to her side. She grabs onto her like a leech while moaning ohgodithurts, and Chun-hee actually chuckles, catching on. Thankfully Gong-shil is totally suckered by the act and gets dragged along in the ambulance (thanks to Yi-ryung’s death-grip, ha).
Watching with satisfaction, Joong-won says, “I never knew there’d be a day where I’d be moved by Tae Yi-ryung’s acting.” And now that he’s managed to ground Gong-shil here in Korea, it’s time to turn to the understanding and caring part of the deal.
He asks Secretary Kim to stay with him and help with that, which, aww. We all knew he wasn’t going to cut him loose, right? Omg, and then he bear-hugs him. Adorable.
In the hospital, Gong-shil notes suspiciously how healthy Yi-ryung seems, and Yi-ryung chirps that she was just putting in some acting practice—oh, and also Joong-won asked her to. She says that she actually can’t stand the idea of Gong-shil’s relationship with Joong-won going well, but it has to (I presume so that Kang Woo will be able to let go peacefully). I’ve been liking Yi-ryung more and more, and I have to say this is my favorite version of the antagonistic second lead—she says she doesn’t like Gong-shil, but she totally does! She just doesn’t want to admit it, like a reverse frenemy. Enefriend?
Gong-shil says that Yi-ryung’s stunt was misguided since she was leaving in order to seek happiness, but Yi-ryung tells her to stop playing Candy—as in, don’t push him away thinking she’s not good enough while hoping he holds her back. Gong-shil informs her that there’s something Yi-ryung doesn’t know, and leans in close to share her secret: “I see ghosts.” She nods to one in the corner and leaves Yi-ryung cowering in fear at the idea of ghosts. Ha, she’s almost as big a scaredy-cat as Kang Woo is. Maybe they really are perfect for each other.
Outside, Gong-shil is confronted with a familiar ghost: the dead boy Woo-jin. Oh, right, that case still has a few loose ends. He leads her to a room where his grieving mother sits, still clinging to her missing child flyer.
But today, seeing the boy is too painful a reminder of Joong-won dying to save her, and she leaves the room despite his plea for help. Secretary Kim finds her outside and guesses that she’s avoiding Joong-won, but she says that people must be misunderstanding her actions as Candy-esque. Candy’s the girl who would nobly (-idiotically) push away her suitor for his own good, but Gong-shil defines her trip as something she’s doing for herself. She says that she can’t be as pure and sweet as Candy, which at least makes her much more interesting. I definitely do like our main couple better than the traditional sacrificing rom-com archetypes, since they’ve got enough selfish motivation in the mix to make them seem real.
In the hospital, Joong-won gets called by name by Chun-hee, who introduces himself as the person Gong-shil was going to leave with. He explains his hunch that in tracking down Gong-shil’s memories from the time she was a ghost, she may be able to accept her talent without fear or perhaps lose it entirely. And then she won’t have any more need for Joong-won and his shelter.
Joong-won and Gong-shil come face to face inside the hospital, where she asks why he held her back, saying that she was going to do the Candy thing and let him go because she wasn’t good enough. Gratifyingly he rejects that out of hand, saying that he prefers her being clear and shameless, and that her sun is better than “that moon that always changes its faces.”
So she gives him the frank version: She was leaving for her own good, not his. She explains how it was nice way back in the beginning when she could just cling to him, having no room for thought other than fear. But once she started to care for him, she started to hate her own fear of ghosts, even though he offered to “lower” himself to meet her, because she felt too pathetic for being so low on her own.
That’s why she wants to take charge now and do something about it, and maybe even rid herself of this skill. Joong-won points out that she could come back to him afterward, but she says she can’t make that promise, and that if she can’t change things for herself, she won’t be coming back—she can’t be the unlucky sun at his side.
Joong-won asks her to wait until he can find something else with which to renegotiate, but she says she intends to leave as planned. He threatens to have her arrested if she tries to leave, citing—of all things—sexual harassment. HA. He lists all the times she’s felt him up without permission and clarifies that while he understands the situation, he has no intention of being considerate, haha. He refuses to let her go easily. I love it.
He heads to his office for a brainstorming session, pleased with himself for admitting his true feelings. Then he worries over his more troublesome comments, like how he’d once referred to his “I love you” confession as “the worst scenario” or how he told the matchmaker he had no intention of resuming their complicated relationship. He grimaces to himself, dismayed to have so little in his arsenal of, you know, nice things he’s said.
Aunt Joo hears about Hanna’s capture and hurries to Joong-won’s side to check on him. Ha, I love that he’s already moved on to his next emotional crisis but Aunt and Uncle VP assume he’s hung up on the last one. He dismisses them, and Uncle VP keeps talking up Gong-shil as having been a key figure in Hanna’s arrest and how she may be the warm presence Joong-won needs to soothe his nerves. Aunt doesn’t like to hear it, of course, but when he adds the bit about Joong-won chasing her to the airport in a heartbreaking display, she looks like she may be starting to unbend.
Gong-shil is a bit bummed when even her unni suggests that maybe she accept Joong-won now, since he knows about her ghost-affliction and still wants to be with her. Guess everyone’s always going to see a Candy in a rich-poor scenario like this. Then blabbermouth Han-joo tells unni that he’s glad things worked out well, because he was worried there for a while that he’d chosen the wrong side in the power game… which makes unni gape, “You were on the VP’s side?” He blabs yes, outing himself as the loose-lipped gossip. I’m just amazed he lasted this long.
Gong-shil gets called in by Aunt, who says she will be removing herself from the situation for now, because it appears her interference has only made the couple more ardent to be together. Lol, are we really going whole hog in reversing the Candy setup? Now Gong-shil finds Aunt asking her not to leave and further upset Joong-won, though it’s mostly because believes that if she lets things run their course, Joong-won will eventually return to his senses.
But Gong-shil replies that she doesn’t have the frame of mind for an ardent, heartbreaking love right now. As if to underscore the point, the ghost boy reappears in the room. Gong-shil says she’ll step back and let him go, so reasonable in her manner that Aunt wonders whether she’s playing reverse psychology or acting out of spite.
Chun-hee finds her to sympathize with her troubled mood, and she says that everyone seems unable to understand why she wouldn’t accept Joong-won when he’s all but begging her to stay. Chun-hee suggests that she could try staying with Joong-won and share the burden with him, because he thinks Joong-won is prepared to do that for her. Aw. But it’s not enough for her, even though the thought of being without him is heartbreaking.
The boy comes back, and Chun-hee asks why she won’t help this ghost. She says it’s because that’s how Joong-won almost died, and this is why she wants to leave with him. He tells her he’ll be at the airport tomorrow, and leaves the decision to her.
Kang Woo shows up at Yi-ryung’s hospital room with soju and finds her sleeping. He muses aloud that she let go of a big movie, and then adds that Yi-ryung seems quite all right when he sees her like this. At which point her eyes fly open (ha, faker) and she pops up to kiss him on the lips, then immediately hides under the covers.
By now he knows how to deal with her and he smiles that he was prepared for an attack of this kind, which is why he’s not upset with her. In fact, he’d been prepared for a much stronger attack, so it’s nice that she left things on such a mild note. At that, she pops back up to ask eagerly, “So I could’ve done even more and you wouldn’t have been angry?”
She starts to go in for a hotter kiss, but he stops her with the reminder that there are reporters outside. He leaves, and she pouts mightily to herself, regretting her lack of attack.
Gong-shil comes home to find Joong-won waiting for her, armed with a new grievance. Now that he’s thought on it, he notes that they’ve been so occupied with thoughts of how they’ll end their relationship that they’ve never properly started one—they’ve never eaten out or held hands without a ghost standing in as excuse. He holds his hand out and urges her to take it—because she wants to, not because she has to—and she tentatively does.
She agrees to a meal, and takes him to her favorite udon restaurant. He prefers cold naengmyun noodles, though his favorite place changed its recipe when the owner died so he hasn’t had any since. She offers to drop by and see if she can talk to any ghosts before she leaves, but he tells her not to do him a favor on her way to leaving him. He tells her to eat up and prepare to miss him every time she thinks about udon.
They talk a walk holding hands afterward, and aw, it really is bittersweet to see them on a normal date, talking about mundane things like favorite foods and sports and hobbies. Of course, he finds every chance he can to point out how unfair things are to end this way, like how she could’ve recommended all her favorite books that he hadn’t been able to read till now, and he could’ve taught her all his favorite sports.
Then it’s music in the park, and as the day wears on both moods grow heavier. She fights her tears as he asks her not to leave.
Unni drinks at work, fuming over Han-joo’s loose lips and how she fell for all his excuses to get info out of her. Then Han-joo shows up to steal her glass and drinks them (for courage?) before planting a kiss on her lips. He says that that’s the only kind of excuse his lips can make, and unni says, “Your excuse… is short.” LOL. So he offers a longer explanation, and they continue drinking in preparation for more kissing.
Joong-won does some roundabout talking of his own, saying that he now sees the appeal of Gong-shil’s apartment because it’s perfect for drinking beer on the roof. He asks hopefully if it would be okay to stock her fridge so he could come back for more, asking whether he ought to stock just one can for tonight, or as much as he likes for the future?
Gong-shil gives him the go-ahead for one pack—six cans—with the somewhat ambiguous explanation that since she’ll have one with him (holding his hand, of course), it’s enough to drink all in one night. Or save some for later. Well, he takes that as a good sign and goes to the store to pick up a pack, happy that he just bought himself six more days.
Gong-shil flinches when dead Woo-jin shows up again pleading for her to help his mother. She turns away and orders him to leave… but when Joong-won returns to the car, she’s gone. Oh no. You couldn’t, like, leave him a Post-It or something? Then she ignores his call while taking a taxi with the ghost boy.
Joong-won remembers the satellite tracker Kang Woo gave him and activates his end.
Gong-shil stops the car just under a bridge and sees Woo-jin’s mother preparing to jump, intending to join her son in death. Gong-shil grabs her before she can leap, and Joong-won runs up as she’s comforting the mother.
He joins her in the hospital room as she watches the mother being sedated and treated. She tells Joong-won of the boy being in this room, and how he asked her to help his mother even though she doesn’t know if that woman will try the same thing again. He tells her that she can’t be responsible for her life, but Gong-shil says that seeing the things she does keeps her in a state of confusion. Breaking down, she cries, “I can’t even handle myself, so how could you?”
So later, as they sit holding hands, Joong-won asks if her trip abroad will be able to take away her ghost-seeing abilities. She doesn’t know for sure, but thinks that she might be able to know how she came to be this way.
He accepts her decision now, and pulls his hand away, saying, “Okay, this is the end.” He declares that they’ve eaten one meal and held hands once, which makes their relationship a light, easily forgettable one. “I will forget you,” he says. She tells him to feel free to curse her if he wants to, but he says stiffly that there’s no reason he should feel the need to curse a woman he’s only dined with once. Aw. I know why he’s saying it, but it still brings an ouchy feeling nonetheless.
He leaves, and she breaks down in sobs. Joong-won stops at a fair distance and notes with some pain, “Even to the end, she doesn’t say I love you.”
Then, we fade in on a bright new morning. Joong-won wakes up in bed and the first thing he does is note that today is the 375th day since his sun has left. On one hand, that’s the first thought of his day. On the other hand, he declares, “I was not destroyed.” With that, he gets up and readies for his day.
He goes to work, conducts his business with his usual alacrity (competing, as ever, to beat Giant Mall), and plans to relocate to Shanghai next year. Aunt Joo is intent on marrying him off before he leaves, even though Uncle VP (soon to step into Joong-won’s shoes as president) suggests that Joong-won is still waiting.
Joong-won confides as much to Trash Can Ajusshi (aww), saying that he’s waiting for his sun to rise again. He even asks for a sign from the ghost that he thinks it’ll happen, and ghost man gives the trash can a whirl.
Secretary Kim checks with the other secretary about a meeting for today, coughing and shaking off a headache as he apologizes for getting the details wrong. Thus Joong-won arrives at the new meeting locale, only to find that he’s too early. Figuring Secretary Kim must have gotten that detail wrong too, he dismisses his assistants and puts in a call… and we see in the background that Gong-shil walks by, sits down, and pours herself a drink.
She’s approached by a man who asks to join her, and she declines stating that she has company. “But you’re alone,” the man says.
Gong-shil asks to be seated outside, and speaks aloud to her companion (whom we can’t see, though I presume it’s a ghost). Behind her another man asks to have a drink together (eeee!) and she all but rolls her eyes as she declines. She dismisses him with back turned and insists she has company, and he guesses, “A ghost?”
At that she turns to face him… but why does she look so blank-faced? Joong-won, on the other hand, confirms, “I was right. You are the Tae Gong-shil who bewitched me and left. The bitch.”
COMMENTS
That last line definitely sounds harsher written in English as “that bitch,” though it technically is what he says—it’s meant to be an echo of what he called Hee-joo early on. (It’s also a contradiction of his false promise to forget her and that she meant little to him, since he resorts to swearing at her after all.)
As to the separation: Yes, it’s a classic Hong sisters maneuver, and by “classic” I’m being nice. I’ll be a big ol’ apologist for some of their early instances, and I think they have written dramas where it makes sense, and dramas where it doesn’t quite so much. I actually like the emotional reasoning behind the split in this episode, which works quite well with the mythology built into the show and feels like it was a consideration the writers built in from the start. As in: It doesn’t feel like they shoehorned it in last-minute because they didn’t know what else to do.
In that regard I find the trajectory of Master’s Sun really very well-done. On the surface it feels a familiar rom-com, but at least the internal logic holds up with these specific rules and trappings. Gong-shil starts out practically delirious in fear, and therefore is giddy with relief to find her shelter.
Her explanation to Joong-won really ran true for me (which doesn’t always happen in these cases—so many dramas have me twisting my brain around to follow separation logic). It’s one thing to play a self-sacrificing Candy who decides unilaterally that her decision is best for everybody and robs the hero of the ability to have a say in the matter. (Or for a well-meaning hero to do the same for his heroine.) But it’s quite another for Gong-shil to not like herself very much, to have things about herself that she fundamentally needs to change in order to live as a normal person, not just girlfriend. And when Joong-won accepts that, there’s a heart-twisting moment of understanding for why he doesn’t fight it. (Although I will agree with him on her whole failure to say “I love you”—couldn’t you throw the man a bone? I suspect that saying the words might actually break her and therefore the need to hold back, but still. It feels so withholding.)
And all those ghost-seeing explanations feel like they were thought out and planned for, which I really appreciate. In fact, I really wish they’d brought in the Chun-hee character much earlier, so that her choice/dilemma had a chance to land with us. It’s a great dichotomy, pitting this man “from her world” against the one from the other world—Chun-hee’s the guy who not only knew Gong-shil in her other form, but acts as that link between her two lives. So you can’t just dismiss him, no matter how much I’m sure Joong-won would love to. It’s just too bad that I can’t deal with his character with any sort of tension or suspense, to the extent that I’m calling the character Chun-hee instead of whatever fleeting name they gave him and have never used.
Well, we’ve got one more episode to go, and I’m feeling cautiously optimistic. Not that the ending will be happy—the ending will be happy—but that it’ll come about in a satisfying manner. It had better be good! I’ve got my threatening fists out and everything.

Hopefully, we get our rainbows, unicorns, well deserved kiss and multiple skinships tomorrow. As much as I love the roller coaster ride that we have had these past episodes, I am so ready to drop and and get our OTP together again for good!

Gotta be honest, I was kinda bored by this episode.
It was all worth it though for that bear hug Joongwon gave Secretory Kim. Love it.

me, too. I felt bored watching this episode, it felt more like a filler to me (especially Woo-jin's ghost story). And Chunderella's appearance was somewhat underused. I expected plenty of jealousy-triggering scenes (and thus lots of comedy).
nevertheleess it's still one of my favourite dramas (I love Joong-won's hand gestures when telling his aunt and uncle VP to get lost by the way). aaakh, I really wish SJS and TGS would end up becoming a real couple. they look sweet together.

So Ji Sub! So Ji Sub! So Ji Sub! What have you done to me?
I mean I love, love, love Gong Hyo-jin but everything other than SJS's Joong Won in this show feels like white noise to me. I never thought I'd get so taken up by a single actor in a single show.
Like most of you here, I'm a little confused by where the show is going. In fact, I haven't been able to weave a lucid thread of the show's understanding in my head for a while now. Deconstructing bits of it had been fun, but I think I stopped watching it for its coherent and convincing plot progression or its writing quality. (I also realise that I've become so used to marathoning shows that watching in real time brings about too many distractions and interruptions for me to maintain a logical flow, and even a continuous emotional investment.) The only reason I watch this show and will keep watching is because of the amount of time they give us access to SJS. (The weekly gaps have no effect on this, of course.)
In fact, I'd be a happy one if someone decided to do a one-man show with SJS. (Please! Please! Please!) If there was a planet where only one man could life, say like in The Little Prince, then SJS would be it for me. Forget his chemistry with GHJ, this man has the most amazing chemistry with himself. All I can do is stare, with my jaw sticking out in awe.

Jhu - you hit the nail on the head. he is so comfortable with himself and truthful to himself even when he knows he is using his head rather than heart and admits to it, and i think i know why. reading his interviews, he states that he mainly likes being alone , eats alone, goes home alone, works out and goes to the office and follows the same routine when he is not working on a project. he spends alot of time reflecting on what he wants to do, how he feels about it, coping with what he says is the stress of stardom. he said that he dislikes interviews, being photographed and being surrounded by crowds of people. and the role of Jw is actually quite close to his real character. standoffish, clearheaded, pragmatic and truthful. he says that he never lies and he always keeps his promises. he even dislikes being late and always arrives early unless it is inevitable. so , yes, he is stiff, stubborn and boring - he admits as much. if that is not being brutally honest (about himself), i don't know what that is. he always does not really care about public opinion. when he later wins an award for MS, (i am writing this in 2015) he only said 2 words on stage "thank you". as for the chemistry part, it comes about when you know a person v well or understands the person intimately, so SJs basically understands himself very well and is in touch with his inner feelings and thoughts . that's my take, anyway!

I literally had to stop the show I was laughing so hard over her performance on the plane. My kids thought I'd lost my mind. lol I kept saying, "Show, show, I can't take it! Stop!" I normally find these things amusing, but for some reason the actress's performance really hit my funny button.

I was TOTALLY laughing out loud at that scene, and also the one she had in the hospital ! I didn't really like her at the beginning of the show, but since she was rooting for the main couple AND was really funny pursuing Kang Woo... She became fun to watch and I am even rooting for her with KW !

I loved that GS emphasized she was leaving for herself and not anyone else. Baby girl is so very strong and she knows it. She has grown so much and ugh, I love her. I just want her to be happy and successful. Also, in the end she had wine, does that mean she doesn't see ghosts now? Eeeeee.
You know, after all their interactions int he show it kind of surprised me that after 15 episodes, this was the first "date" of our OTP where they actually held hands with no ghost strings attached. When they were talking about their hobbies (reading, sports) it just made me so sad because this was the first time they were really learning about each other as a couple. And then it had to end. Sigh.
JW crying in the hallway broke my heart. The fact that they didn't show his face made it more impactful tbh. You know he's in pain but he didn't want GS to see him like that, he had to be the strong one. Even though he didn't want to, he did the right thing in allowing her to leave. Ugh that scene was just beautiful okay. He let himself cry but picked himself up right after--he'll get over this and be strong. And he did as evidenced by the time jump.
These two have evolved so much from the first episode, it's like two different people. It was a joy experiencing their journey with them. Now, where are those bottles of wine I need to watch the finale tomorrow...

I think Master's Sun is perhaps the most mature drama I've seen from the Hong Sisters and sincerely, one of the best from them. It has also become one of my favorites dramas from this year. I spent the episode shouting at the screen and cursing the day the concept of an extension was born. I love our OTP and JW especially (SJS - your hilarious hand gestures and day counting and talking to the trash can ghost complete me) but...this episode sort of made no sense to me. You got her off the place and then....did nothing? and enough with the Candy reference confusion.
I'm choose to blame chusoek and the extension in general, and will hope for the best for tomorrow. Hong sisters...please don't make me ragequit again.
(penny in the fountain.......) Pretty please, can someone get these two crazy kids together...and explain why TGS can see ghosts...and why JW is a ghost buster...and who mystery man is....and what's the story with coffee ghost...and where she was for 3 years...and give me LOTS of skinship...and have a happy ending for secretary kim...preferably with a nice ahjumma of his own...in one neat final episode....

This is what I don't understand.
There are actually plenty of questions to answer about this world, and the extra episode would have allowed us to have seen the answer to those questions AND neatly tie up the show in a pretty bow (with lots of fan-service :P). The fact that the Hong Sis didn't take advantage of it is rather upsetting.

Thanks for the recap Javabeans.
Master narratives and the Herculean task of re-writing them, or even being seen outside of them.
To the world Tae-Yang equals Candy and no matter what she does the world at large cannot see her as an autonomous human who can make a choice outside of the script they insist she plays out. Every action or inaction is filtered through the lens of what they think she must me.
Ah, stereotype much?

Despite being unable to see ghosts, Joong-Won has struck up an independent relationship with Trashcan Ghost and both will star in the new buddy movie, "My Wingman was a Ghost." lol

I think this ep establishes that she is going away:
1. so that she doesn't jeopardize his safety again;
2. to find her memory of those 3 years when she was in a coma, and hopefully find a way to ditch her ghost-seeing ability.
As to why she and Chun Hee think that memories in a coma can be retrieved, or why they think there is hope of losing her ghost-seeing ability is still a mystery!

One of the things I like about k- and j-drama's, they usually insist that the lead female has a dream independent of the male lead.
I may be wrong, and this might only happen in the dramas I watch, but I think these dramas resist the White Knight rescue and make the woman work out her issues. [this year's j-drama WOMAN comes to mind. I kept hoping for a white knight rescue but she had to figure it out on her own.]
Also more than American dramas k-dramas insist that work matters. People must work at something, in the world or in the family, work is a part of what makes you human.
Okay all the blather was to contextualize what I thought the episode was saying. It is the anti-JERRY MCGUIRE and the philosophy that in love "you complete me" is what is should be about. Love isn't best between two damaged people, love isn't good when there are no options [that's co-dependency].
Love is best when two whole people choose each other. The fact that Joong-Won survived a year and ten days without Tae-Yang means he can live without her.
Tomorrow we will see how well Tae-Yang did on her own.
By the end of 16 Joong-Won had stopped being a wooden boy and had become a fully fleshed human. Loving Tae-Yang not only made him a full person with her, but it re-wrote his way of relating with human beings in general.
I'm so glad most folks have come around to warming up to SJS performances, and the ones that didn't dropped the drama. I found it frustrating in the beginning to hear the harsh criticism and unflattering comparison about his work and his approach to his character.
Now as we near the end it has become clear how magnificent SJS's acting choices were. Without the stiff brittle Joong-Won of episode 1---whatever, the wonder and delight of Joong-Won's awkward hug of Secretary Kim in episode 16 wouldn't have been so satisfying.

"Love is best when two whole people choose each other."
Absolutely. But then wouldn't it make more sense for her to stay around so they can get to know each other, rather than running away to 'find herself'?
The whole concept of leaving people behind in order to 'find oneself' is such a throwback to the tired and dysfunctional logic of the '70s. In a good relationship you don't 'complete' each other or overshadow each other. Rather, you bring out the best in each other and thereby become the best version of yourself.
That's where I was hoping this story would go.
(BTW. Thanks for your answer and I'm sorry my response(s) here are pretty crabby. I'm just so very frustrated that - yet again this year - a story I had become invested in has seemed to lose its way. Maybe they'll pull a rabbit out of the hat tomorrow, but I don't see how they can. *fingers crossed hoping to be wrong*)

"crabby" Only the things that touch you elicits those kind of responses. I'm sure the artists appreciate your investment.
"finding yourself" People are different. I have a friend who is able to reinvent herself in place. I have another who must move and earn a new degree whenever she need to change the direction her life has taken. I admire them both.
"stories losing their way" I figure artists have the right tell the stories they need to tell. If they don't tell the story I need to hear/experience, I find another artist and leave that story alone. I try to critique the artist execution, not their creative impulse.
But sometimes it is hard to resist throwing monkey poo critique at an artist's work, especially when they lead you in a direction that encourages you to invest in their characters and then they make an abrupt drunken u-turn that have you throwing up from motion sickness and with a bitter taste in your mouth. [I mean you I Need Romance and I Summon You Crap]

On your comment about re-inventing. Don't you think there's a difference between re-inventing and the old cliched 'finding yourself'? I do. One is about progress and growth. The other generally carries a connotation of unhealthy self-focus and/or selfish self-indulgence. I think the nuance is different.
And to draw a parallel with the show. GS going back to college or experimenting with helping ghosts would be like re-inventing in the ways you described. On the other hand, ridding herself of loving friends and family so she could 'grow' would be more like one of those people we've all met who makes and leaves friendships based on their utility towards some current goal. I don't think the character was initially written to be that way. But that's the way this episode seemed to portray her.
Gidget
October 3, 2013 at 12:24 AM
But then again...
Maybe GS's new outlook of valuing relationships based their utility was meant to create a mirror. While JW now bases his relationships on emotion, she now bases hers on calculations. In that light, this development would make sense for the story's structure.
yumii
October 3, 2013 at 12:37 AM
@Gidget.
I hadn't really thought about it from that perspective, but you do have a point.
The idea of 'finding yourself' can also be class tainted, at least in American film and television. A character usually need to have a certain level of financial security to chuck h/is/er lives and start over. As you point out is is often marked by unhealthy self-focus, and/or selfish self-indulgence [in the media].
In my original response I was thinking of both 'finding oneself' and reinvention as a positive response to a unworkable situation where the person in search of a new perspective goes seeking one. I think Tae-Yang is trying to re-invent her relationship/interaction with her worlds [both living and dead] by discovering how she came to be as she is.

October 3, 2013 at 4:01 AM
My thinking is that Gong Shil's "finding herself" situation is quite different from the "tired and dysfunctional logic" of the '70s. Hers is a unique case. I believe it would be difficult to solve the mystery of her ghost-seeing ability as well as finding out the possibility of losing that ability and thus living a normal life if she stayed by JW's side. Only when these questions are satisfactorily answered can equilibrium be achieved and enable her to meet Joong Won on equal footing. Further, that going away journey may also explain why it is only JW who has the ability of making her ghosts disappear.

Sorry but I promise myself no more answers to posts but I think you are wrong, the basic human needs have to be met in order to be happy and complete they start Personal security, Financial security, Health and well-being then comes friendship, intimacy and family then at the top Esteem, self esteem, self confidence, in general to be all that we can be and then self actualization, what a man or woman can be she/he should be... if we master them we become healthy adults so we need to work in all those areas and careers and jobs are important they are not an American thing but a human thing, but if you really watched Jerry Mcguire and not only the line you complete me, you had to listen to his rant, he had to go and be alone to realize that what he wanted to make him complete was her love, he told her our company had a great night and a lot of money was made but anything of that is important because you weren't there and you complete me... So it is not an anti Jerry Mcguire it is actually the idea of it what made her leave. She couldn't continue hiding, she needed to be independent and be complete to complete someone else. Believe me not everyone wants a white knight to rescue them nor it should be an option, you rescue yourself that is why you have two legs to stand on your own, what is this the 1800s. I must admit that yes he said it he survived 375 days without her and he didn't die so he can do it for a lifetime, he grew and learn enough to be a complete human being capable of sharing his life by choice and not because of need with someone equally capable of the same. Let's hope she completed the same journey and found herself along the line.

I re-read my post and yours a couple of times and I haven't been able to find the points on which we disagree.
Perhaps it is on the point of Jerry Maguire. I wasn't talking about the movie in it's entirety but about the quote. The quote has moved into popular culture beyond the context of the movie and people use it to denote the heights of romantic pairing.
Regarding criticism of SJS's acting, reading the comment section in recap of the first eight or so episode should provide evidence. The earlier the recaps the harsher the criticism.

What I disagree is that you said women or people don't have to work hard on anything and that career of jobs are not important, another thing you said that it was anti Jerry Mcguire because to be in a couple is enough which it isn't we don't get a husband, fiance a partner just because I need him but because what I am and what he is make a whole for both of us not only one side. Also I disagree not every woman wants a white armored knight to rescue her, that is an anti feminist view, the fact is that women don't need anyone we are capable of do everything like guys do. That's all, when I see someone younger writing stuff like this makes me a bit mad because we women can't go back we got to keep going forward and keep the view of self sufficiency.

@ Lupita311
I think you mis-read.
"One of the things I like about k- and j-drama’s, they usually INSISTS that the lead female has a DREAM INDEPENDENT of the male lead."
"I think these dramas resists the White Knight rescue and make the woman work out her issues."
I continued "[this year's j-drama WOMAN comes to mind. I kept hoping for a white knight rescue but she HAD TO FIGURE IT OUT ON HER OWN.]" This of course was the point of that wonderful social-realism drama.
I don't think it is unusual or unexpected that when an audience member empathize with a protagonist that audience member want a fairly godmother, white knight, or industrious elf to pop in and help out and rescue the protagonist from his/her dire straits. However that doesn't happen in social-realism drama and it didn't happen in Woman. Wanting someone to get a fairy-break is not anti-feminist or pro "the cult of domesticity" it's just basic relief fantasy.
"Also more than American dramas k-dramas INSISTS THE WORK MATTERS. PEOPLE MUST WORK AT SOMETHING, in the world or in the family, work is a part of what makes you human."
"Love isn’t best between two damaged people, love isn’t good when there are no options [that's co-dependency].
Love is best when two whole people choose each other."
I do not see how the above equates with "to be in a couple is enough which it isn’t we don’t get a husband, fiance a partner just because I need him but because what I am and what he is make a whole for both of us not only one side."
And I never stated or implied, "every woman wants a white armored knight to rescue her."
"That’s all, when I see someone younger writing stuff like this makes me a bit mad." Please be comforted in knowing your assumption about my age, and my views on feminism are most likely incorrect.

Ok, so I'm not gonna be so nice and forgiving as the writer of this recap.
First, GS kept giving the excuse that she didn't want to be a 'dark sun' who brought JW danger. Um. Not buying that reason. Maybe we're supposed to forget that the danger wasn't created by seeing/helping ghosts, but by playing an amateur detective trying to solve a murder? And perhaps that following a MURDERERS suggestion to wait in his shop until he returned might have had a slight impact on the outcome?
"But it’s quite another for Gong-shil to not like herself very much, to have things about herself that she fundamentally needs to change in order to live as a normal person, not just girlfriend."
I can see that, but why leave? To effect change she needed to follow the advice of some complete stranger? For what purpose? To see the places her spirit showed up when she was in a coma? Word of advice for you GS: Google. See everything. Less expensive than travel. Less dangerous than traveling with a stranger.
And just because CH can see ghosts we're asked to believe he knows what's best for GS and how she should work out her issues? And NONE of the characters in this drama see a problem with that? Even Mr. Blue-House-Qualified KW? And they're all ok with it as she runs away with a complete stranger within days of (re) meeting him? Um. GS, maybe you DO need to go away to protect JW because you're making some really, really crazy choices. And your friends aren't helping.
"It’s a great dichotomy, pitting this man “from her world” against the one from the other world—Chun-hee’s the guy who not only knew Gong-shil in her other form, but acts as that link between her two lives."
Can't agree with that one either. For all she knows he could be some crazy stalker who abducted her because he was attracted to her 'light', only to pose as her rescuer once he thought he would get caught. Or he could be like the matchmaker, working up some deal to serve her up to an almost dead ghost who wants another chance at living. Like, in true HS fashion (there's always a bit of social activism in their dramas...and the ghost looks conspicuously like he was tragically beat up before he died) maybe Coffee Ghost wants another shot at life as a woman? Who knows? But that's the point, nobody seems to notice that CH seems to have stalked her and only re-introduced himself as soon as she was getting serious with a man who could 'solve' her ghost problem.
All I know is that I don't like the CH character. The only thing he seems to really want to do is interfere with GS and JW's relationship. That, and he looked that sad, scared little ghost boy in the eye, smugly patted him on the shoulder (um...how's that possible?) but didn't offer any help.
This recap was way too nice. This show has gotten so far off track it's making me mad. I sure hope they revert to the original tone of the story and give us some major fanservice tomorrow. Harrumpf.

If you happened to read my comment I couldn't agree more with you in all the aspects it is ludicrous, she going with a stranger and everyone be oh ok, and the sister call me often? what? if I did that my sister would tie me up and keep me in the basement. But I like the thing about finding herself, be more of what she was, the moment he left her go was when she said she hated herself, there he understood that he was holding her like a shelter, she would never knew what was outside and how far she could go. The idea that they needed another character and a mean one, he practically told the little kid to keep on bothering her. Chun Hee knew this was her breaking point and he used it. I don't trust him, but it is too late they wasted today's episode and last week's ones to give me a satisfactory explanation, sorry I am not a giddy girly girl that wants SJS and GHJ to get married, I liked the story as a whole but I am disappointed and I agree the recap was way too nice for what this horrible episode deserved.

It has been clearly stated that GS spent a bunch of time with Chun Hee while she was in her coma and she remembered seeing him "in her dreams" aka when she was a spirit during the coma. On top of that her older sister recognized him from the time GS was in a coma.
I do think it is a bit risky for GS to be going away just like that but the drama does offer up enough reasoning that Chun Hee is not a dangerous guy.

I thought she only remembered his face, but not any specific memories associated with him. And I thought the only thing the sister knew was that he identified GS location so that she could be rescued. And if he just showed up suddenly, all hanging around after she went into a coma. That's just creepy. And good reason for a restraining order. But, maybe I missed something. Yunno, english subs + late night watching = missing things.
If I did understand correctly, what's frustrated me is that the show's asserting that I should believe that this bare-bones history is some sort of go-together-on-an-around-the-world-trip caliber character endorsement. If that's what they're sellin', I'm not a buyin'.

@Gidget,
You make very good points.
But then as @wren says, this ep is a filler. It is only here becos there has been a one-ep extension. If it were not for that, we'd would have been happily viewing the finale already, without this hurriedly written ep that has little merit. They missed the chance to use the extra ep to good effect for dealing with some of the Qns that puzzle us.
I don't take this show that seriously, given its ghostly tenet and made-up rules. So I'm only hoping that tonight's ep will wrap up the series satisfactorily.

This episode brought tears. Him leaving her at the hospital - wanting her to at least admit that she loved him - breaking down in the hallway with tears - my aching heart.
I am sick of the aunt - get a clue - your nephew does not need you to secure him a bride.
I love the development of JW character - hugging SK , fussing over his illness, and telling him he can not have ice cream - how cute is that????
I also loved the fact that while she is trying to leave her world - he is seeking comfort in her world by not only talking to the garbage can ghost - but giving the garbage can ghost a pat of affection.
I would love to see more skinship - they have so much chemistry and a passionate kiss with the mouth moving would be awesome. I also want to see them married and living together in their blissful love with plenty of sexual tension - BRING ON THE HEAT!!!!

But even with a hug between him and secretary Kim, the mini date, the "THIS BIG diferential",Joong-won reflecting and other good stuff, the filler things (like the plane thing, but I loved Yi-ryung) didnt made me happy because we just went in circles to end in the pace where we started. All the explanation she made behind her departure could be done in 10 minutes and a good scene, but I know that for the sake of extension they had to expand it. And maybe im not very sharp, but I understood that it was for him. Not for him him, but...maybe you get what I mean. Altough I like the explanation behind all the "Im leaving", again, the fillers killed my joy.
I dont hate the episode, I just enjoyed it less. All the episodes in this drama for me were a 10 or a 9 and this episode was like a 7.
So, I repeat my plea: 10 minutes of angst and resolving things and 50 minutes of a cute and happy couple doing cute and happy stuff while they are smiling an kissing (ok, kissing is asking for to much knowing we are in kdrama land. Just one kiss). Because if we are going to have fillers, make them of good stuff
Thank you for the recap!

I loved the reasoning Gong Shil gave. That she didn't want to be the loser that clung onto the awesome guy but be an awesome person herself. She is saving her dignity and wants to make something out of herself instead of that ghost seeing hot mess that everyone sees in her. Which is a much better reason in my book than noble idiocy.

i suppose if there was no 1-ep extension, the airport scene would have went into the time leap scene straight away? they spent the first half of this episode reiterating that TGS still looks like Candy but she's leaving cos of herself (trying to be different about kdrama themes?).
at least we got two hilarious scenes, TYR's airplane act and JJW's free lifetime club membership. and the fact that they got to "date" for one day (but not night, damn you, woojin's mother)
this ep showed a JJW that went from "i'll be annihilated without you" to "i'll accept your decision (to leave)."

I'm rather surprised that Master's Sun became all about Joo-won (not that I'm complaining). While I came in entirely for Gong Hyo-jin's Taeyang, So Ji-sub's character is the one I feel most attached to, whose growth I felt most invested in, and come tomorrow, the one I'll miss most. Yeah, he has his faults (a whole ton of them), but he's just so fascinating that I can't help but like him.
In light of that, that moment with Secretary Kim (my second fave!) was probably the best moment of the entire show. The hug was absolutely lovely and warm, and the stills alone were enough to convey all the emotion and history between them. Honestly, their relationship is so sweet I think I could get a cavity.
I'm thankful everyday that there's a pure, unadulterated relationship to quasi-foil the turbulent, angsty one between Joo-won and Tae-yang. It helps The Master's Sun gain some grounding.

Couldn't agree more. What a fantastic job the actor has done in portraying JW's transformation and in fleshing out his character.
Up until the cliffhanger I actually liked both leads equally, and was projecting forward to missing seeing them interacting as a couple after the show ended. But lately GS's choices have become so crazy, tonight I can't say I'll miss watching her.

I am not ready for this drama to end ....even with crazy aunty - I LOVE the core character - and the 2nd leads worked along with the Uncle and his sexy lips. The mature actors and content of the scripts were refreshing. Yep, I think they scaled up the chemistry between the JW and GS and scaled way back - not sure why - they are consenting adults:) I also want to see JW and his Dad work on their relationships.
I am not looking forward to Heir and all of the teasers and pictures that are floating around promoting it to death...for Heir to follow this drama ...is like consuming "CANDY" after a great hearty meal.

Until this episode it never dawned on me how passive a hero Joong-Won is. [That's because I spend a lot of time living in my head and I often mistake thinking for doing] Now he is a man of action and cunning I see the previous passivity.
Loves Joong-Won's transformation into a real boy, evidence by this weirdly charmingly awkward hug of a slightly disgruntled Secretary Kim. [Secretary Kim's complaint that Joong-Won didn't stop his leaving with this much effort even though he's been around for 15 years and Tae-Yang only been around for a fraction of that time.]
Cunning move on Joong-Won's part threatening Tae-Yang with molestation charges.
Loved that Joong-Won actually reflected on his crappy behavior [lower myself to your level indeed!] and began to understand how it must had flayed Tae-Yang's soul. No one is without self-esteem, but when it is constantly trampled on, sometimes you lack the strength and it is easier to go along as people wipe their crappy boots all over you.
Also is seems Joong-Won, like the audience, was rightfully aggrieved that the relationship hadn't started, there was no opportunity of enjoying a cute romance before it was shut down. He mounted a very convincing argument. [Of course he was the one who insisted on ordering the death notices for the romance before he would begin--bitten on the butt much?]

Fingers crossed in hopes of finding something new to watch. I must say that this year has not been a bountiful harvest of dramas that I've loved.
I was so happy to have had I Hear Your Voice, My Daughter Seo Young and School 2013.
I hope there is a next drama I find engaging so that I can become passionately involved.
I usually stick with the Rom-Com or human/slice of life drama's because scary drama's scare me, bloody dramas unsettle me, mysteries make me impatient, and procedural make me role my eyes in response to characters behaving in ways that defy common sense.

Yumi, until I read your comment, it didn't occur to me that JW was passive at all.
Through the last 16 episodes, he came across as someone who took matters into his own hands - looking to find the necklace, using TY's need for a shelter in exchange for her ghost-seeing abilities, making her take responsibility for ending things(making her responsible so that he could be passive hahah), and then searching for each and every piece of the puzzle when he lost his memory.
But as you say, when he could not get a shred of his affection returned, I think he realized that it takes 2 hands to clap.
When he broke down in tears, I phydically felt the pain in my heart.....SJS you rock!!

Actually, I've never seen him as passive at all. To me, the show has established he is a man of action--at work, with his family, and with Gong Shil. Unless by being passive you meant being accepting finally of his flaws and faults?

I don't think everyone will see Joong-Won as passive. Yes, in the realm of business where he is secure of his ability he does things. In his personal life he is passive or avoidant. In looking for a life partner, he is happy to have his aunt do the work, then accept or veto the result. As he indicates, before Tae-Yang, who he marries doesn't really matter to him.
He is a great thinker, and as someone who thinks a lot I often equate thinking [and speaking] with action. But as I've been told, those are not the same thing as doing.
Previously Joong-Won was passive and avoidant, which is why Tae-Yang reminded him to stop running away from things. He was avoidant so he told Madame Go he wasn't interested in the details of her deal with Tae-Yang.
It is only in the last couple of episode or so, the last one exactly, that he began to work actively for what he wanted.

Great recap! I like this episode too. Glad it din feel rushed or forced.
I actually thought JW meant himself when he said till the end (I) didn't say 'I love you'. So he was waiting for GS to say that? I thought he meant he couldn't bear to say the words after seeing her like this cos he was contemplatin whether to say it while he was brooding in the office.
That's my own interpretation I guess!

Yeah that scene was heartbreaking. But I love that it was brought up again bc it fits with GS's emotional development. She even said she hates herself (erh ghost seeing abilities) and if she can't handle herself, how could he...so if she can't totally accept who she is, and only see her ability as a curse, she cannot bring herself to fully love another human being if she can't even love ( handle) herself. So her not saying I love u yet makes sense even tho we know she deeply cares for him. This was also admitted to Aunt in this episode that she is not of mind to love at the moment.
I feel like this is where a Dr.Phil comes in and say something cheesy like "you must love yourself first before you can love someone else" and while I want the OTP to get back quick, I really like how the Hong Sisters did their separation
I like this episode too. Chun hee was not a dramatic obstacle that I had imagine but I think it's for the best. JW already has his issues resolved, now focus is on GS...and her identity as a person. She doesn't need another man to profess his love and put JW into jealous fits (but I would love to see that) to "find herself" so she really must do this on her own
I'm digging her choice to leave especially when she told Chun hee that everyone misunderstood her. Even her sister suggests that since JW accepts her ability, she should stay...but that's just it. Their identity is linked as a couple...he's the CEO, she's the Candy. If they get together, and he dies for real, or they are separated, she needs to have stable core and strong foundation to her identity to see JW as someone she loves, past beyond the life shielding shelter...yunno the "i love you bc I need you" versus "I need you because I love you" dealio.
So getting away and finding her own space (referencing to virgina wolf's "A Room of One's Own") me thinks will help her determine who she is and what she wants to do with her life. Or I could totally be reading too much into the plot haha

I think, story wise, this is one of Hong Sisters' strongest drama in recent years (IMO even better than The Greatest Love). I love that the heroine has her own motives to be a better person, which something that resonates with me.

Yi Ryung's silliness is why I've kept watching this show. Her 8 mins per ep is some of the funniest, dorkiest stuff on K TV. Much of the rest of the plot is slow, repetitive, and a little boring, but once it was apparent she wasn't the malicious second lead, she became my hope for this show. Such commitment from the actress to go that kooky.

Not going to lie, like others, I found this episode to be anti-climatic. It dragged on some but even to the end, I am still cautiously optimistic that there's a reason for the 20+ minutes spent on discussing TGS' departure. Because I mean, she DID have to go on and on explaining that she was doing it for herself, not as much for him. I respect that as someone that has seen waaay too many K-dramas where the woman is playing hard to get or gives everything for love in a very unrealistic and many times, semi degrading fashion. His reaction for letting her go, when finally understanding her, was a lil off putting, despite my love for him. I wanted him to be like: I don't understand why you need to leave because I love you but I do understand your unhappiness and I will respect your choice to find yourself. Because love means learning to be unselfish. And yes, he did cry as he walked away ( Was it just me, or did he walk funny?? I swear those pants are too tight and too short) but I just wished he had spoken somewhat more maturely about it. I want them to be together and I want the next and last episode to explain what happened in those 375 days and for her to be like: I finally know who I am and can now be with you. Because honestly, how can you be someone's other half when you don't know yourself as a whole?
Parts I did enjoy were the Bromance between Sec Kim and JWJ and the strange one with the garbage ahjussi. TYR's airplane acting had me laughing soo hard. This may have been the only time I did not fast forward when she appeared. Frankly, her character annoyed me for 95% of the drama. En fin, can't wait to tomorrow as I'm off on vacay after! Perfect timing! :)

My complaint is with the fillers. I can see they had a story planned, a reason for the characters, a logic in the story. Its not even against the Hong Sisters. My problem is not with the story, but with the extra episode.
They need to fill the space so it took longer to get to point and it felt slow and like running in circles. Some fillers are good and others not. Thats why Im complaining.

1. I like the song of the day. If i could get my ginormous behind on a bike, this would be the song i would have on my ipod.
2. I love So Ji Sub's aegyo when he was shooing his uncle and Aunt Slapitha (I dont forget) away.
3. Tae Yang -- i get why saying the words "i love you" was not an option for you (perhaps you were under the misapprehension that you did not need to say it, that he knew?) -- but throw the guy something. He wakes up counting the days for goodness sake.
ok 4 things:

9 more hours for finale and I am already feeling nostalgic... Heir better be good coz Woo Bin gonna be there and I will be repeating MS after as what I've done with TGL. Multiple times over!!
I am glad that Secretary Kim stayed and the bear hug JW gave him was soooo cute and heart warming. I love their pseudo father-son relationship. It was funny, heart warming and unique if we consider the twins are in direct relationship with SK. JW-SK relationship is among those that I treasure so much. I love the bit where JW nagged the sick SK and not allowing him to eat ice-cream LOL! SK is such a child himself ><
I felt a bit dissatisfied on how underused CH's character was because as what JB said, he could be a good obstacle fodder for JW since CH knows GS more than he does and is from the same world as she is. I think if he was introduced earlier, the story could get even more interesting. Even his brief, unspoken rapport with YR is enough for me to like his character and I think he can give a good run on JW money!
Overall this episode was a nice tie in for the finale. The dating scene and how they come to understand the need for GS to leave in order for her to discover her self worth. I am hoping today's finale will be worth it coz IT HAS TO BE WORTH IT FOR ALL THE TIME AND EMOTION I INVESTED IN THIS DRAMA!!

I knew the normal date was gonna end in heartbreak for the poor love-sick kids, though I wish that she could've told him plain blank that she loves him too because it was VERY obvious that she TOTALLY was. I am glad though that it seems like YR will get her happy ending with KS and GS's sister, GR will get hers with blabber-mouth Han-joo. I LOVED YR in this episode with the faking sickness and faking sleep. KW obviously lurrves her. . . . . I'm indifferent about Jin-joo, though. And am I the only one missing SKINSHIP (a.k.a more than kissing with closed lips *cough* sex *cough*. Jeez, I sound like a perv)between our OTP? I'm optimistic about the finale. I really loved this episode. I can see how they could have totally done away with this episode, with episode 15 ending with Gong Shil leaving and the finale starting with Joo Won in bed, a year and 10 days later (which I thought was a rather random number. 375?) but I saw this as more of a really extended deleted scene rather than a draggy filler episode. And it also did a good job of getting us to understand that Gong Shil really was leaving for HERSELF and not being a noble idiot. In fact, I think this episode was poking fun at some of the tropes and cliches we expect see in dramas, like Joo Won's back hug comment which I found totally hilarious. Or Gong Shil saying that Candy's better than her because she's leaving for the sake of her man. Like, guys, we have a SELFISH heroine for once! And for the right reason!
Also I just LOVED how Joong Won was like, "Hold up, we haven't DATED yet! No fair!" But that date really got to me, it really was just so bittersweet. I mean I've teared up a couple times throughout these last episodes but seeing them go on a date with an imminent separation looming over their heads, I could totally feel their heartbreak and I freaking BAWLED. No shame.
I'm gonna be so sad when this drama ends, I feel like the Hongs sisters really did an exceptional and THOUGHTFUL job with this one and I could ALMOST forget the abysmal Drama-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named.
Now give me the fluff filled finale! I'm ready!

Hm, was it just me or was the ending kind of confusing? I wasn't sure if it was alluding to gong shil losing her ability to view ghosts or whether she still had the ability. The drinking detail and change in personality (more prideful and confident) seemed to hint that she couldn't see ghosts anymore. but on the other hand, there was a lot of mentions of ghosts in the ending, like secretary kim sent joong won earlier as if a ghost made him do it. it also seemed that gong shil's company was a ghost.
i'm ultimately confused as to the situation of her ability, which should influence her attitude and relationship to joongwon(why she left in the first place) so i'm uber excited to see what actually happened to gong shil in those 375 days. and im crossing my fingers for a SATISFYING ending to obviously the otp but also the second lead couple and the sister-bodyguardloudmouth couple as mebbe the cherries on top to create the perfect
dessert to a wonderful meal. ah the hong sisters have gotten to me with their metaphors....

Now that you mention it, I did find it weird that she didn't recognize his voice. Someone mentioned the theory that she could still be possessed by a ghost, possibly a French one (to go with the preview where Joong Won says "Va t-en!" which is French for "Get lost!"). I just assumed she lost the ability because she was drinking wine.

Did anybody else catch the tiny metaphor with the noodles?
joong won said he typically likes the cold noodles but lately hasn't been able to eat it because the owner of the restaurant died. then gong shil offered to consult the owner with her abilities and he refused and continued to eat the udon noodles despite having said he doesn't like them.
like joong won typically is cold but after meeting gong shil he lost that coldness and doesn't want it to come back so he'd rather take the love and warmth from his sun.

Sooo... WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GONGSHIL'S ACCIDENT STORYLINE??? I've been curious about it since Day 1 and I really thought I was gonna get the full story in this episode, but i guess they saved it for the last episode. OR DID THEY?

Nice breezy episode full of character development and realizations. I'm happy that JJW didn't turn into a brokenhearted when TaeYang left... I'm loving the side couples lol. And Secretary Kim ahjussi and JJW are so cute together in a bromancly-uncle-nephew relationship ... "No secretary Kim you can't have ice cream!" Hah... And not forgetting uncle vp the honest funny one ?! I hope for a happy ending so I can let go of this drama with satisfaction and content and not out of dissapointment.. And maybe abit more otp moments pleeeeease ?.

1. I loved Jong Won's hand gesture when he shooed everyone away in his office lol.
2. I need to look up more of Chun-hee's work. I like his voice and lisp...and his looks too.
3. Yi-ryung was great in this episode, and I loved that kiss hahaha.
4. Disappointed that she never talked to Woo Jin's mom. Maybe next episode, but it feels unfinished.
5. I feel like episodes 13-16 could have been condensed into 2 episodes.

Questions.
Why does Chun-Hee physical interactions with ghosts seem different than Tae-Yang? He seem to touch Woo-Jin as if the child-ghost was a physical entity to him.
Did the taxi driver that took Woo-jin and Tae-Yang to the hospital look like Chun-Hee to anyone else?
I thought that Joong-Won re-learning to read to rescue Tae-Yang was big deal but the drama has made no mention of it. Am I the only who finds this weird?

If I remember correctly, Taeyang can touch ghosts too. If you re-watch episode 12, there's a scene when GS patted Woojin's head when the kid finally agreed on leading GS to where his body was.

JW learning to read was a bigh deal but in the Hong's writing big things in the plot are sweep under the rug, it was a big deal that she sold herself to madame go but all it took to get her off was money from JW, she was a slave but all she did was look for silly ghosts to get married, that is funny unintentionally, why would she use her that way when she could branch off to bigger things, the fact that they found the necklace and now he can talk to his dad and get a good relationship with him, he thought his dad never paid the rescue, the fact that secretary Kim quit but he never told him to stay. They never showed how the Hanna/HC thing went down, we see her get possessed by HN's ghost so how did she went in and out of her body, at what point she contacted KW and decided to use the wire (to record the conversation), All of that are holes in the story. I knew all the holes in the story but at this moment I forgot some of them...

Thanks for the recaps, I don't know it might be just me but I am absolutely disappointed on these three episodes... what we watched today was pitiful, three episodes two weeks to end up in the same spot, JW accepting that he has to let her go, she recognizing the biggest flaw in her character, she hates herself or what she is, who can make anyone happy if they can't stand oneself, no one... A mysterious character that we don't know anything new and who probably would get only a rush three seconds flashback. This drama had promise and for 12 episodes it didn't need body fluids jokes or bathroom jokes to make us laugh and then it made us swoon, but now three empty episodes diluted no substance. What happened? It is not the same drama I was watching. I am not talking about angst, separation, misunderstandings and meddlesome aunts or moms every romantic comedy has to have those elements so the reunion could be sweeter... I don't blame it on the extension either since that was only one episode and they wrote this so straight forward with no twists or turns that it just flats out. Is as if I went on a roller coaster ride that has one big drop but that is it go up and up and then fall face first to the ground. Today was a repeat of ep 14 and for what I saw on the preview for 17 it is just recycled material from all of the other 12 eps minus the interesting parts, the ghost stories. At least now I know the Hongs have only a number of tricks under their hats, so in their next drama I wont have a lot of expectations and I won't be as disappointed when it all goes south.

The Hongs are average writers who get lost (pun not intended) easily in their own realm: Their beginnings are rather good (not impressed here tho) and their endings are weak: Bad finishers they are. The only exception to that rule is The Greatest Love.

Well I have a problem with The Greatest Love, from ep 11 to 15 we were in angst that Dokko was going to die and I mentally prepared for it, not only because I loved the drama and CSW is my favorite actor a bit over the top in this one but I loved the character and then they leave her singing the song sobbing in a park near the hospital, the next step was to follow with the surgery and how gripping the reunion of the almost dead fiance was going to be right? that is the logic but no, not for the Hongs their logic was he returns after two months of being abroad, I said what? this guy was dying his heart had only 5% to survive and he traveled abroad on a plane? well, not really that was just a bad trick.

I feel that JW and TS have come up with all sorts of excuses to explain (to each other and themselves) why the chemistry between them isn't just that - as the blame switches back and forth, so does the acceptance of that blame by the other one, so they are never on the same page when it comes to honesty about their feelings. Does that make sense?
I agree with javabeans that there are things about this drama could have been annoying (forward leap in time, for example), but the Hong Sisters made it work. I've mentioned this before, but the excellent casting and over-the-top acting made a world of difference in the level of my love for this drama.
I am so curious - did YS loose her ability or come to understand it? Stay tuned!
Beautiful Master-chef-fellow-seer-of-ghosts mysteriously disappeared and left me with a ? about his part in all this -his presence feels rather undeveloped, but perhaps the final ep will answer that, too.

They better get married and have some ghost seeing kids or something... I've waited waaaaaaay too many years for So Ji-Sub to get the girl and live in a drama. I've been drama/movie stalking him for years to see him have a happy ending but nothing so I had some hope but he love interest refuses to be his love interest even though He's got so much going for himself... Gong Hyo-Jin plays the same kinda character but she usually gives into her man-child interest but she's being a hard ass this time.

I'm so excited and giddy for the great grand wondrous no- more- crying- lots- of -kissing FINALE!
and right, I so love the cute and funny moments like TYR faking pain which Chun Hee scoffs at, the bear hug between Sec. Kim and Joong Won, the date [ ha, I laugh so hard when he prevented TGS from interfering the couple on the bench with his words " Mine, is about to break up"] and lastly, the kiss between Kang Woo and TYR. I'm glad that TYR didn't cling that much to JW and didn't act all bitchy to TGS as well. I did cry on the scene where JW places his hands on the wall and cover his eyes in utter sadness of saying goodbye to Gong-shil.
Praying for an awesome end to this drama.. Great job to the cast and to the Hong sisters.
Super Fighting!!!!

Thanks for the recap Javabeans. Before I even read I need to rant and rave.
It should have been much better if Joong Won didn’t stop Gong Shil at the beginning of the episode and she went away then. At least that way we would have gotten rid of the stupid, unnecessary time jump out of the way at the beginning of the episode and have only 3 angst and heartbreak filled episodes (which is 3 episodes too many for a romcom for my taste anyway). Seriously, these 4 episodes were bitter, borrowing Joong Won’s words. I don’t care how well each element was woven together (and not all of them were well done anyway) but if you put all the drama cliches of amnesia, noble idiocy and time jump together it’s a bit too much to take. I really want to erase these 4 episodes from my memory. I don’t think they will ever feature in my repeat viewings. If it was one or two maybe I could have managed but I hate when writers keep viewers dangling with hope and refuse to deliver until the last episode. After postponing to watch last week's episodes with subtitles for a full 4 days I feel like I'll be doing the same for episode 16 as well. One shouldn't feel this way about the next to last episode of what was once one's favorite drama.
I also started losing my sympathy for Gong Shil. I remember in the early episodes how much Gong Hyo Jin was praised for her acting and So Ji Sub was criticized for being too much like Dokko Gin. Lately all I read is how great So Ji Sub is. Of course he looks great and acts so well that we have great sympathy for his character, but I also think that it has to do with the writing.
And while viewers are waiting for Gong Shil and Joong Won to kiss for real it’s a cruel writer who would make everyone but them kiss!!!

For me the similarity between Dokgo and JW only that both are such a man-child, but SJS as JW is very different from Dokgo. I mean...CSW killin' it in being the crazy Dokgo, never seen any male lead just like Dokgo, always crazy and over the top but exudes hotness overload at the same time but we can't compare these two gorgeous men.
While SJS portrayal of JW is more subtle and cold, Dokgo went all the way crazy (can't forget his manic laughter muahahaha).
Both works the characters so well and make it their own, Dokgo needs to be portrayed as CSW did and JW too needs to be portrayed the way SJS delivered him to be. And i'm not saying all these bec. i got swayed away by those two (thou i obviously and totally did).
...the writers are indeed meanie! WE NEED A PROPER KISS!

Yes, who can forget Dokko Jin yelling at the top of his lungs: "PANTIES!!!!"
Not JW's style at all!
The DJ resemblances faded quite early on in the piece, for me at least. :)
