Jung Il-woo confirms Gold Rainbow
by girlfriday
Jung Il-woo is coming back to dramaland! YAY! It’s in a long weekend drama. Boo. He’s romancing UEE! Awwww. The drama is by the May Queen people. Hiss. Can you tell I’m torn? I don’t know what to expect with MBC’s new weekender Gold Rainbow, but now that they’ve fiiinally locked down their hero in Jung Il-woo (The Moon That Embraces the Sun, Flower Boy Ramyun Shop), I’m gonna have to watch this sucker, come hell, high water, or tears — makjang-filled, boredom-related, or otherwise. Please be good, Show. Please, be good.
The new weekender from May Queen Pictures stars UEE as one of seven orphans who band together to make their own family. Kim Sang-joong (The Chaser) takes them in as their surrogate father, and the show’s running theme will be the siblings’ “bond that’s thicker than blood.” I love found family stories, so despite the May Queen pedigree (boooring), this story’s got an edge, not to mention the fact that UEE is always endearing as the plucky underdog (see: Ojakkyo Brothers).
Jung Il-woo will play her leading man, the son of Jo Min-ki (Two Weeks), who gets tossed aside like an outsider the second his father remarries and starts a new family. Despite being estranged from his father, he’ll grow up to be a good man and a prosecutor. He lives a pretty carefree life (I suppose the one upside to being cast off by your terrible father is living the way you want), and though he’s got an arrogant reputation, he’ll be sweet and supportive when it comes to UEE. D’aw. It doesn’t seem like a new setup by any stretch of the imagination, but I do think they’ll be adorable together.
There’s no confirmed episode count yet, so there’s no telling how long this drama will be. It could run the usual 50 episodes, but May Queen was thankfully a 38-episode series, so there’s a chance it’ll be shorter. I know, how could I want less of Jung Il-woo? Still, I’d trade a hundred hours of mediocre for sixteen of awesomely addictive. The show will be kicked off by child actors Lee Chae-mi (Two Weeks) and Kim Yoo-jung (May Queen) both playing the heroine, so it’ll probably be a while before we get to the adults. Huh, with Jung Il-woo and Kim Yoo-jung, it really is Moon/Sun all over again.
Gold Rainbow follows Scandal and premieres November 2 on MBC.

Indeed. I think it's high time JIL becomes a bigger star. Younger, lesser talented males are getting higher billing than him and that does not make sense to me, considering his skills. He and Lee Sang-woo, need better representation stat.

I agree 100%. It's incomprehensible. He's played second lead so many times, and to me he's very talented (not to mention easy on the eyes). Why isn't he getting lead roles? Maybe better management is what he needs.

Can't wait! I'm really excited about watching this one! Jung Il Woo is one of my favorites.
I truly enjoyed May Queen. It wasn't much different than reading a long novel...it was well written, had a great story line and ending.

I can't say the same. I enjoyed the child actors, but the adults storyline was awful and I didn't finish it.
Han Ji Hye's acting was pretty horrible in this. I've never been a big fan of hers but I thought she was ok in the movies that I watched. However, in this drama she was basically expressionless in most scenes. She does the shellshocked face well, but other than that I didn't know what she was thinking. I have no idea how she could show no emotion on some issues and go way overboard on other, perhaps less important, issues. She showed no tears at her breakup and the fact that her ex (15 years!) hit her and threw her out of the company, but went way overboard with anger at her little sister dating the rich jerk.
Maybe it's the writing and her character's really supposed to be like that, or it's her acting, I'm not really sure.

I love Jung Il Woo.
I was okay with May Queen, like you i enjoyed the children version: kim yoo jung is always winning in her acting, I have a soft spot for Park jibin cause I loved Yisan and he was an awesome younger version of Lee SeoJin in that saguek, but the one that surprised me in this drama is Park Gun Tae cause he was just great in that drama.
But I kinda get where you are coming from regarding Han Hye jin, though I will not say it was horrible, i just found it lacking. It seems like the adult version didn't carry the younger version narrative. I feel like the portrayal was a but off, the same with Park Guntae's portrayal that didn't carry over to JaeHae's adult character.
the only thing I was happy about May Queen was Kim Jaewon. I believed the transition from Park Jibin the easy going teenager to Kim Jaewon the high roller adult.

I enjoyed it a lot. Not sure why it gets so much flak, but I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one who watched it and loved it. Of course I was a huge fan of all the adult actors, so their storylines didn't bother me at all, and I thought the acting was terrific (even if I wish they'd done more with Jae-Hee's character). Still, you're right: AMAZING ending. :)

Here's an MV I made for May Queen a while back . . . just in case anyone wants to see the 'cute, adorable' side to the series. It wasn't all about ship building, birth secrets, and angst. ;)

Can I ask you not to stan the drama and just be regular viewer for the meantime? jk :)
Since I love most of the young and adult casts, I really want them to have high ratings. And they have a heavy competitor with that Kim Soo Hyun-penned drama. And I remember JIW once mentioned that he wants to win one of those year-end awards and those awards are ratings-related. I know they're not that prestigious, but still........

Try watching Return of Iljimae (ROI) with Jung I'l Woo. A sageuk. One of his best performance IMO. And one of my favourite KDrama of all time. DB has its recaps.

Kim Sang-joong won my heart in Life is Beautiful first, then City Hunter.
How does he play this one? Hopefully all strict and stuff but with a warm heart.
JIW, of course I will watch!
Does he have a child actor counterpart?
Will Jo Minki have scenes with Lee Chae-mi so we can flash back to Two Weeks?
UEE I love also; her tough will work well with JIW's softness.

I was very torn the past week thinking about whether it is a wise choice for JIW or not but then decided if he is the one that can make a drama shine, then of course. I like Kim Sang-Joon. I like UEE. I like Jung Il Woo. his characters are always endearing and very memorable no matter what the drama. I think these actors will make this drama better even if the writing turns out to be mediocre. just ad-lib please!

Ok, I'll give it a try, it's Jung Il Woo! And a promising cast. Jo Min-ki (Two Weeks) and Kim Sang-joong (The Chaser, City Hunter) as fathers... hmmm, this could be something good :)

I love Jung Il Woo! Maybe it's because of Scheduler, but he has a ethereal look that I really really like. Korean ethereal, maybe that's the right combo for me? I can't quite say, but I am sooooo in. Somehow I think he will work with UEE on this which is another thing I can't quite explain. Especially given the drama synopsis that begins with "7 orphan siblings who are trying to survive..." a scenario that would normally immediately make me push the "off" button. Everything looks brighter (as in ethereal glow) now that Jung Il Woo is on board :)

about 50 episodes: it can still be good. Ojakkyo brothers was ute and well-received. and High Kick - I think JIW actually needs some opening up. even in Flower Boy RS he got better and better in the later episodes. I think it has to do with getting others to come along with his acting spirit, synhronizing souls. he has such unique approach that sometimes other actors seem to be on a different wavelenght at first. but give it just a little time and that unique spirit sticks
