IU to pine after Jang Geun-seok in Pretty Man

Confirmations are in for singer-actress IU, who’s signing on to star in KBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama Pretty Man just weeks after wrapping her long weekender You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin. It’s an unfortunate title, given that Lee Soon-shin was not the best, but IU was quite lovable in the headlining role anyway, despite the head-scratchy plot turns. In her next drama she’ll be nursing a crush on Pretty Man Jang Geun-seok (Love Rain), as the averagest of average heroines, named literally Bo-tongie (“average”).
It’s pretty much the same character she’s always playing, though I get the feeling that this drama’s going to be laying on the ugly duckling act quite a bit. She’ll play the heroine who’s been in love with Jang Geun-seok for ten long years, pining for the unattainable pretty man ever since she met him in junior high. Her name is literal, in that she’ll be average in everything, from looks to style to status.
Jang Geun-seok plays a man who, for reasons I can’t quite pinpoint, dates ten of the most successful women he can find. The only thing I can figure is that he’s trying to win a bet, clear a debt, or write a scandalous tell-all. Maybe all of the above? Lee Jang-woo (I Do, I Do) plays the second lead with a pretty heart (I’m getting the sense that these characterizations aren’t exactly digging deep). He’ll be a quirky oddball character who ends up in a love triangle with the leads.
Despite the crazy-sounding premise, the show will be in capable hands. The manhwa adaptation is being penned by writer Yoo Young-ah, who’s worked on The Gift of Room 7 and Korea, and co-directed by the PD of Flower Boy Next Door and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, and the PD of Tamra the Island. I think offbeat and weird will actually be the point of this show, though hopefully the writing will rein it in with a relatable heroine (she’s THAT average for a reason, right?) and the leads will have some onscreen chemistry worth rooting for.
Pretty Man follows current Wednesday-Thursday drama Secret and premieres November 20.

I really miss the sort of normal fresh from the military (or off to the military ) haircut from Beethoven Virus. You're Beautiful really started this string of pretty boy roles from him. I could not finish Love Rain. The combo of him + Yoona was a little unbearable for me. It could have just been Yoona though....:P
On IU, (I have yet to finish Lee Soon Shin) I really have nothing against her. Typecasted? Yes, but then will you be any better as an actress if you never take a role? You could shoot down said cookie cutter roles, but who knows when your time in the limelight is up and no more offers come in? So, I'm not against her.
Believable chemistry..let's just shoot for that now.

Question.... What does his hair style has to do with his 'sanity'? He is just fine... Finer than many idols/actors out there, actually!
If he cuts his hair, will that make him more 'sane'? If he has long hair does that make him 'crazier'?
The only thing it might happen when he cuts his hair is that some (maybe most) girls will find him more attractive. But that is a subjective thing.
I like him better with his hair longer but that is just a personal preference and it absolutely has nothing to do with his great personality, his great acting abilities or this drama...

Jang Geun Suk is one of the few celebrities who can get away with any hairstyles & look good on it. That is just one from a lot of reasons why I love this one of a kind Hallyu Star.

Hmm, so Secret's only 16 episodes? Thought it was 20. Back on topic, I'm shocked IU's doing another drama so soon after album promotions. Hope she takes a long break after Pretty Man wraps.

Whatever... But it just so happens that both these idols are quite proficient actors (I gather that's the prevailing opinion among Kdrama watchers, yours truly included). I'm looking forward to this one. I'm with several others here who are keen to see which Jang Geun Soek makes an appearance (the sane one would indeed be refreshing---LOL!). Idols with acting chops provide no small dividend to production companies, which understand how competitive the drama market is, ratings wise. It all translates into profits, something they cannot afford to be cavalier about.

Jang Geun-seok is actually an actor who branched out into music, just saying. I don't think anyone would identify him as an idol first.
I don't have issues with idols doing dramas as long as they can act, and IU actually can.

Can't say I'm excited for this project even if I like her (& the second male lead). I have flashbacks of SkipBeat who wasn't the best drama ever... JGS: The ball is on your side if you want me to root for you.
Ratings nerd: If Secret ends at 16 eps (with the good ratings, they could decide to extend), I bet Heirs figures will then improve. Both Heirs and Pretty Man have the same (narrowed) target audience so what will the ahjummas choose? Maybe Medical Top Team? Lol.

Sadly, the AGB/Tnms ratings don't tell us who's on the sofa at home (but we know who has the remote and they surely don't watch highschool dramas: They love their makjang)... On the other hand, viewers who watch online or on mobile devices can be guessed easily.

Secret and Heirs are two very different flavors. Heirs is a lot more fluffy, while Secret is a bit dark and pretty serious. Just based on that, I would suspect that MTT would pick up more than Heirs. But since both would be quite a ways into their run, not sure either would pick up a lot.

I am on the fence on this due to the plot and the second lead and that they have this girl who is obviously considered very attractive cast an an average Jane. That's right up there with Chae Rim's-drop dead gorgeous- Dalja being criticized for her looks by her co workers. Blind much? I'm really interested in the pd from FBND/FBRS-that makes it promising. I hope that second lead guy doesn't walk around with his mouth hanging open like he did in I Do I Do. I think JGS has acting chops but I just can't get My Pet to go away-its burned into my retinas and I'm not sure I can go back.

I don't think Chae Rim is all that attractive, and her hair was annoying in Dal Ja, so jokes about her looks didn't really bother me, lol. I really wish Jang Geun Suk hadn't done My Pet. Well no, I wish that movie had never been made at all, but at least if he hadn't been in it, it wouldn't have marred him so. Man, that movie was bad!
I'm totally going to watch Pretty Man, it sounds cute and fun and exactly my kind of show. I always figure, if they actually cast an unattractive girl, people would just say how mean it is that they have an 'ugly' girl acting like an ugly girl, you know. But at least if they have a pretty girl playing an average girl, it doesn't seem as cruel.

If the drama is going to keep with the Manhwa's format, the Beautiful Guy is very ambitious and a rich ex-wife see's him and see's how ambitious he is and takes him under her wing and becomes his mentor. Seducing 10 rich, beautiful women is a mission she gives him.
Also, in terms of IU being cast as an "average Jane" I agree with the fact that, looks wise it is VERY hard to believe she is average. Acting wise though, she's very good at pulling it off. Like the post says, it's really the only character she's ever played, so she's gotten very good it pulling it off.
I'm waiting for the role where she's cast as this gorgeous girl who know's she's beautiful and is even a little vain. I'd love to see that drama lol. Maybe they could do a gender swap with this drama and call it "Beautiful Girl"??? LOL :)

Yeah, I'm an outlier too. One of the things that sucked me into kdramas was JGS's hair/clothes in You're Beautiful and Love Rain.
As an American viewer, I can watch millions of shows with dudes who look like they just threw on whatever was on their floor and bland guy-next-door hair. It's shallow I know, but I love how kdramas often enough have male leads who are flamboyant or at least obviously styled. Even in workplace dramas, or those in which the dudes are suit-hangers, the suits are always super tailored. Master's Sun: relatively low-key suits, but carefully chosen, and tailored within an inch of their lives. LOVE.

I wish dramas would be more careful with the wardrobe. although JGS is probably one of few who can wear outrageous extravaganza and it might be quite suitable here. who knows. still, you gotta have this guy on a leash all the time (and not, it is not My Pet reference, I mean literally, or he´ll run away with the Crazy.)give him a chance and it will be outta your hands with clothes and hair

in the manhwa doko matte is chaebol's illegal kid , his brother's ex-wife gave him the mission to seduce 10 women ( from 18 to 50!!) so she could help him to get his daddy's company.

theories.
1. maybe Averegina is literally cursed by her name. except the evil witch is rea and the curse is more like deliberate actions to show her in bad light. she has a birth secret and the stepmother trips her every attempt to success. in the end, she becomes the royality and changes the name to Regina (The Queen)
2. maybe Geun-seok´s character is a bit like...well, lets say, actors love a different woman in every movie and drama and they can go crazy a la Don Juan De Marco, and in the end you don´t know any more.
and how these two are connected I have no idea.
it has gotta be very messed up. it should be. bring me entertainment. I want to see crazy people. really, I do. Makes me feel better about myself...

My eyes were deceiving me. I got confused, because Regina means Oueen in romanian (and in spanish) and in the " evil witch is rea" part i didn't realize it's supposed to be evil witch is real because I thought of the romanian word rea which means bad. My mistake.

Okay, so IU is trending on nate, and I clicked on her to check out the news. I kid you not when I say - I couldn't tell who was the girl between them both when their pictures were put together. Its downright creepy.
JGS needs to *desperately* get a hair cut. Because if he doesn't, I may buy the pretty, but not the man. Or maybe I won't buy both. He needs to get back to his old days of glory (ala You're beautiful, etc.) I can't even believe I used to like him when I see him today.
Anyhoo... IU is seriously taking up a lot of projects! She just wrapped up YTBLSS and released an album, and now she's doing another drama! Take a break girl!

I like his hair long. But the thing about that style is that when men get older is really doesn't look good, so it is better for a guy to change it up once in a while and not make it a signature style.
