Friend 2 sets premiere date, releases new trailer and poster

So, the multiple-generations Part 2 isn’t exactly a new idea in the gangster franchise world (Godfather II, anyone?) but if anything can make me invested in a sequel, it’s the tragic besties-turned-bitter-gang-rivals of Friend. Yoo Oh-sung (Faith) reprises his role seventeen years later in the story world of Friend 2, where he unwittingly takes his ex-bestie Jang Dong-gun’s son Kim Woo-bin (Heirs) under his wing to reclaim the Busan mob.
Yoo Oh-sung serves his sentence for ordering Jang Dong-gun’s death, and comes out of prison to find the mob family his father worked so hard to build scattered and in the hands of others. He decides to track down his men one by one, and enlists the help of a young delinquent he met while in prison. Kim Woo-bin has never known his father’s face while growing up a troubled kid on the streets of Busan, and takes to Yoo Oh-sung like a father and follows him eagerly, happy to be taken under someone’s wing.
And then they’ll discover the horrible truth, that the hyungnim and surrogate father he’s been following is the man who ordered the hit on his father. Eep. What remains to be seen is who knows what about whom and when. Is it a double cross, a double-double cross (quadruple cross?), or just plain tragedy? Coming from director Kwak Kyung-taek, probably all of the above.
Alongside the present-day storyline will be Joo Jin-mo’s rise to the top of the 1960s mob world. He plays Yoo Oh-sung’s father, and will be building the gang that his son will struggle to reclaim in the present. I’m not sold yet on Kim Woo-bin’s acting chops in the trailer, but given that it’s just a tiny glimpse, I’m hoping he’ll hold his own. I’m rooting for him, but this ain’t no kiddie pool.
Friend 2 hits theaters November 14.

Yoo Oh-sung seems to hold the screen well. As a precautions, after his villain role in 'Faith', I would advise him to never, ever do another role that involves a pencil moustache.

as much as i like kim woobin, i DON'T think he's stealing the show in "heirs" or that he's at the top of his class at all. he makes his characters work. i think he's good looking. i like him as an actor just fine. i really wonder how this will turn out. hope it's good and hope HE'S good.

WOW. Kim Woo-bin's eyes are breathtakingly intense. *sighs* Guess he wasn't a model for nothing.
And yes, I'll add my voice to the chorus clamouring for a subbed 'Friends' - would be very grateful.

Considering some of the actors who had been models when they started out, being a model isn't exactly impressive.
I wouldn't say KWB is classically handsome, but he does have a distinct, interesting look.

It's interesting to notice that most models can become decent actors: I've been rarely disappointed. Charisma and a noticeable face help for sure but then, even in the acting department they manage. Maybe when you're not busy dancing and touring (like an idol...), you actually have time to take acting lessons.

yeah, considering some of the model-turned-actors we've seen - from So Ji-sub, Joo Ji-hoon, Shin Mina and Gong Hyo-jin in the earlier gen to name just a few, to the White Christmas boys, Lee Jong-seok and most recently Ha Yeon-soo now, they've done pretty well in the acting department.
Though I think it also helps that the people named have all taken smaller/supporting roles at the start of their careers instead of going head-on into prime time drama lead role territory and flopping like many idols do.

I love, love, love KWB and so want him to do well in this.. From the bits we see in the trailer, it feels like the saturi accent might be one of his challenges.. It doesn't sound that natural on him? But that blazing intensity is completely breathtaking, and I'm spell-bound anyway. Fingers crossed that Woobie brings it and brings it successfully ❤

I agree, this ain't no kiddie pool. Woobin's acting will really be 'judged' here. One thing I learn from watching noir movie is that the actor should, by any means, shows a phychological depth within his acting. Challenge for Woobin indeed, he's good at being rebels, playful rebel, bromance rebel, rich rebel, genius rebel, but this is far deeper than being so.
So, fighting, Woobin!

So that's going to be Woo Bin's permanent "acting" face now? He has so much potential but he's been typed cast big time ever since White Christmas. Such a shame. Though now it also makes me wonder if he really can do something else because that frown is present in all the stills.

It's a shame, I don't want him to get typecast as the bad boy the same way So Ji-sub was typecast as this broody angster until Master's Sun. Sure, he did do comedy in Vampire Idol and was awesomely adorkable there (and also in School 2013), but it looks like 'gruff/vaguely menacing' is his niche for now.
Though stills are not much to go by for judging acting, I made that mistake with Lee Yubi in Gu, I still hope Woobie's acting is up to scratch in the actual movie. He can act all right and he's doing great in Heirs so far, but there's room for improvement.

I know he's in danger of being typed cast, but he couldn't and shouldn't refuse Friends 2.
Besides, he still has plenty of time to do other kind of roles. I'm sure he also wants to expand, so give him time. :)

I was hoping he'll appear on Running Man to promote this movie, but instead he went on to promote Heirs instead. Most the guests' movies went on to do really well at the box office :D I really hope this does well, but I'm not extremely optimistic.

Ooh, I love gangster movies. I'll have to see if I can find the original, although I guess now I know how it ends, lol. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Hm, I think Kim WooBin's a decent actor but his expressions in the poster and in the trailer seem a bit exaggerated. Very "THIS IS MY INTENSE, ANGRY SNARL". But anyway, that's just a few clips so we'll see.

Woobin moved me crying in School, but for some reason only felt ''meh" here. Owell, that was less than ten seconds of crying face anyway. I'd continue to hope that he's good here, and then hopefully some role after in w/c he's not rebellious :)

I became a fan of Oh Yoon-sung in Faith and, I have to say, I miss his Mustache of Evil. He looks so much cooler with it than without. But that's just me.
I really want to see this, but where can I see the first one with English subs?
Woo-bin looks fine here. As an actor, plus he's dead sexy.

Dunno why but Kim Woo Bin doesn't do anything for me but he does act good. I'm here to support Joo Jin Mo. So smexy! JJM is all namja naemsae. His deep voice makes me shiver in a good way, of course. (◠‿◠)
