Choi Woo-shik headlines film as teenage rebel

You know I love my heartbreaking high school stories about teenage bad boys. Here’s another one to keep an eye out for: Choi Woo-shik (Covertly Grandly, Rooftop Prince) has landed his first leading film role in the new indie movie Tears, a coming-of-age story about an eighteen-year-old outsider. It’s the new project on the way from director Kim Tae-yong, of Gong Hyo-jin’s short You Are More Than Beautiful and Hyun Bin’s Late Autumn.

Choi Woo-shik plays a kid who comes from such a poor family that he chooses to take himself out of the equation and goes to live at an orphanage. That’s crazy. Who orphans themselves? He’ll end up all alone in the world with no one to lean on, and despite his rebellious nature, he’ll work hard not to get kicked out of the orphanage, which is literally his last recourse. The story will explore his adolescent angst as he grows up on the outside of everything, and his rebellion as he tries to deal with the pain caused by his family.

It’s described as a contemplative, soul-searching kind of story, that’ll focus on a young man’s inner struggles during the transition between childhood and adulthood. I love themes like this, and I’m looking forward to seeing Choi Woo-shik branch out of sidekick roles (delightful as they are). Hopefully he’ll be able to carry the emotional range needed. The role is characterized as an eighteen-year-old boy who’s restless, apprehensive, angry, and full of hate, but at the same time vulnerable and delicate. No easy feat, but it sure does make me want to see the movie.

Tears starts shooting in December for a 2014 release.

Sounds like an interesting premise. One of my close friends lived in an orphanage when he was young, and knew someone who had orphaned herself as well. Of course, he never asked how or why she did what she did, since most orphans didn't talk about their situations openly as a general rule. Thank you for the article; I'll definitely look into this one.

Loved Choi Woo Shik in Rooftop Prince. He seems like an actor with so much potential and versatility. But I can't get over the fact that his face is so baby-faced, youthful. I'm sure he'll fit this role at a high school student perfectly though. I'm looking forward to his future works :)

Aww this sounds like a really good premise. But like girlfriday says, who orphans themselves?!? A little different from the usual is usually enough reason for me to tune in though.

This is great.
As much as I love complexity in story and plotlines, I love how one can also explore great complexity within a pretty simple premise.
It's utterly awesome.
Also, I wish more dramas could be as specific about what it will be about as movies tend to tell of. it's not that big a deal, just something I wish at times.

What the deal with "orphanage" in Asia country, is it the eqivilenent of "DCF (Department of Children Services)" but voluntary? I guess it would make sense I never really seen any real deep rooted family connection therefore a child being place with a equate family member probably is not optional in most Asia country.

In America most children take from their parents and place in DCF are normally place with an immediate family member, I’m raising my brother’s son had custody of him since he was 2 he now 13. DCF always try to place the child with family before foster care with a stranger.

America being a Nation of diversity it’s nothing to see a white child rise by blacks, Asia raise by white etc. Why, is it so hard for a country with the same Ethnicity to do the right thing and try to raise children in a loving family environment?

Orphanage aka place for children with absolutely no one. They're lucky if they get adopted. I don't think Korea has a formal foster care system. I know my country definitely doesn't.

A lot of times orphanages are not full of orphans. Many children in Asia get adopted without the consent of parents (because they are usually abandoned by other family members, e.g. grandparents, without the knowledge of direct family members). In general, I would watch it when you say "lucky" to get adopted. Adoption is a big deal, should be a big deal, and a traumatic experience for children who get displaced from their home country and family.

Yaaaaay!! Lately my biases are getting lead roles left and right! In TEN we gt to see some of his serious acting and I loved it! I think he can pull off the misfit rebel teenager role.

Woot! I'm excited to see this. Although I haven't finished TEN, I enjoy his acting. I feel, given the right project, he'll be able to make a name for himself. Best of luck! Can't wait to see the film!

Tears will not be directed by Kim Tae-yong of Late Autumn/You Are More Than Beautiful/Family Ties, but by ANOTHER Kim Tae-yong, a young director who wrote and directed the short film Frozen Land.
