Teasers out for tvN’s upcoming Basketball

Woo, teasers are out for tvN’s upcoming period-sports-action drama Basketball, which is set in the 1940s during the Japanese occupation years and includes Korea’s liberation and then separation into North and South. I was looking forward to the show based on the premise alone—a poor young man finds his future and lifeline in basketball, which propels him to that historical 1948 Olympic team—but watching the previews offers the reminder to keep an eye out for the stylish action as well, which director Kwak Jung-hwan showed off in his prior dramas like Chuno and Conspiracy in the Court.

The drama’s a few weeks from premiere, and here are two previews to introduce the world of the show, starting with the young hero (Do Ji-han) who gets discovered and is promised a bright future with his amazing talent. Jung Dong-hyun plays the hotshot player who’s already a celebrity, a contrast to the rookie hero, in a classic rivals-and-opposites setup. I do expect their relationship to eventually find some common ground since they’ll become teammates, but I’m betting there’ll be plenty of conflict to keep them at odds along the way. I like the grit in Do Ji-han’s character; from the previews, it appears there are people who want to use him and his skills for their own gain, but he is not about to let them walk all over him. Love it.

Granted, the setting probably conjures thoughts of last year’s hit historical drama Gaksital, if only because it’s the obvious comparision—there just aren’t a lot of other dramas set during that time period. Even if the two shows end up being wildly different, there’s also some deja vu factor in that I’m pretty sure they’re reusing some of (all of?) Gaksital’s sets (did they get a discount at the Gaksital clearance sale?). Such as the distinctive Angel Club facade, and the single city street that became the stand-in for all of Gaksital’s town scenes. And there are familiar faces in the cast as well.

Still, the focus of Basketball ought to be pretty different, since, you know, there’s the whole basketball angle. At 24 episodes, Basketball will be half-produced in advance, which should ensure that the production levels remain consistent. The drama premieres on October 21 as a Monday-Tuesday drama on tvN.

ARGHHHH I'm confused. I thought the sequel to Answer Me 1997 was going to be about basketball?

How come this is a separate drama now? :/ And both on tvN too! Could they not bear to part with the basketball concept or something? ><

They were always separate dramas! And one will actually be about the players, the other about the fangirling aspect so it won't clash too much I expect. And you know, the different time periods.

Reply 1994 will feature basketball - but that's only because the heroine is obsessed with popular basketball players of the time, much like Shi-won was obsessed with HOT in Reply 1997. But that show wasn't really about kpop idols, just like 1994 won't really be about basketball.

Basketball will focus on the players themselves and their dream of getting into the 1948 Olympic team.

I'm really looking forward to both shows!! :').

At first I was confused too, but they're actually completely different kind; the sequel to 1997 is obviously from another genre, more light and comedy while this one is a drama mainly about sports.

I am looking forward to both them. TvN is great

This isn't the sequel to Answer Me 1997. That's Answer Me 1994. A different drama premiering three days earlier than this on tvN.

well that may not own by galsital production team but only usual drama sets that every production can rent it...
just like the setting in historical drama all used same settings..

I think "Gaksital" sets are the same as the ones used in every drama which has the 70's settings ("Fashion 70's", "Sister Bok-hee", "Love My Love", "Sam-saeng-i", "Eun-hui"). I'm even betting those sets are even the same ones used in "Seoul Scandal".

And in historical drama settings, I'm sure it's just a trip to the nearest Korean Folk Village (Hanguk Minsokchon).

One thing:

I was surprised at that one picture, where they're skating at the (frozen) artificial pond of Gyeonghwoeru Pavillion.

Stating, just because if anyone else is aware of Occupation history, the ownership of the entire complex transferred to the Japanese Governor-General in 1911, and until 1915, razed almost all of Gyeongbokgung Palace save for 10 buildings:
-Geunjeongjeon Throne Hall
-Hyangwonjeong Pavilion (with the Chwihyanggyo Bridge still at the original northern side, destroyed during the Korean War, and was restored to the southern side)
-Jagyeongjeon Residence (Cheongyeollu, Bokandang, & Hyeopgyeongdang Halls), built for Queen Shinjeong, who was co-regent during Gojong's minority; in the 1865 restoration campaign by Gojong's father the Prince Regent Heungseon.
-Jibokjae Private Library Complex (with Palwoojeong Pavillion & Hyeopgildang Hall). 2 of the buildings (Bohyeondang & Gahwoejeong Halls) were demolished alongside everything
-Sajeongjeon Executive Office Hall (with by Cheonchujeon & Manchunjeon Halls)
-Sujeongjeon Cabinet Hall - built in 1867 during the restoration campaign
-Gyeonghwoeru Pavilion - originally constructed in 1412 and burnt during the 1592 Imjin Japanese Invasions, the present structure was reconstructed in 1867 during the recontruction

A historical view of pre-restoration Gyeonghwoeru Pavillion, taken in October 1945 (which would fit the timeline welll): http://www.flickr.com/photos/dok1/3189521004/

This is taken on the right side of the pavillion (maybe near the nearest bridge?), near where the present site of the Amisan Rear Garden (of Gyotaejeon Hall) is.

I'm always up for something different. While I detest sports of any kind, I'm willing to give this show a look-see.

Here is hoping this would be my show for the year. Love period dramas/movies, and any kind of sport as long as its not golf. Playing it is one thing but watching it makes me fall asleep.

I kinda like it when dramas are shot in advance because it makes me feel they wont go all crazy with the plot just to have higher ratings lol... There have been great dramas that had terrible endings because writers got greedy and shamelessly repeat over and over the things that gave them high ratings. This drama sounds pretty interesting to me.

I get that the sets are reused and all, but why is the lighting so similar to Gaksital too? Even font for the titles are similar...

Jung Dong Hyun's even wearing the same clothes as kang-to in that fancy suit for the stills.

Daaaammmit. Why are there so many dramas to watch this upcoming fall. I'm going to try to narrow it down to 4.
Marry Him if you Dare, Heirs, Basketball, and Answer me 1994.
Basketball and MHIYD on mon&tues. Heirs on Wed&Thurs. Reply 1994 on Fri&Sat.

And play catch up on potato star in the weekend.

But this isn't airing on one of the big three -- if it's on cable network, what is that saying -- more violence?

Then again, I thought the violence on Gaksital was pretty twisted at times and that show wasn't even a cable show
