Jang Hyuk considers sweet romantic melo Strawberry Milk

It’s just one project after the next for Jang Hyuk, who’s coming off a recently released movie (The Flu) and currently in talks for his next. The movie is a melo-romance titled Strawberry Milk that comes from the director of 2004’s popular youthful romance Temptation of Wolves, Kim Tae-kyun, with whom Jang Hyuk previously worked in 2001’s Volcano High.

Strawberry Milk centers around a high school student who falls in love with a PE teacher, with Jang Hyuk up to play the teacher. Which, erm. I know the setup doesn’t automatically mean it’ll be skeevy, and there’ve been plenty of stories where I was rooting for the teacher-student relationship. But I feel like it works better when the older guy is a beta type (My Little Bride, Hello Teacher), to counter the power imbalance inherent in the setup. And Jang Hyuk gives off such forceful, almost aggressive vibes that I wonder if he can pull it off. I admit to being uneasy, but I’m also leaving open the possibility that he’ll surprise us and go counter to his current action-and-abs beast-man image.

Of course, it’s too early to decide anything with the high school student role still uncast; producers are reportedly searching for the right actress to their “next Kim Go-eun” (Kim Go-eun being the fresh face who cleaned up at all of last year’s awards shows for her strong debut in Eungyo). Playing Jang Hyuk’s co-worker and college friend is Lee Do-ah, the actress pictured below, who’ll be a confidante and buddy to our hero.

Strawberry Milk will begin filming later this month.

First thought of the Title reminded me of the Strawberry Milk Pink girl from "200 Pounds of Beauty" (Scene 1:20:40-1:20:42). I couldn't stop laughing at the thought of that scene. :D

It's a childish drink, and something that is offered in high school.

Could effectively be icky.
At the same time, I can't help thinking that it's a case of double standards: In dramas and movies, we accept boys having noona love easily (and god knows they can be persistent and "aggressive" in their courtship). If it's the girl who chases her teacher (reluctant or unrequited love maybe?), I say we could have something close to what we had in What's up?
Suddenly, I become worried for the outcome...

For me it's the student-teacher aspect that could potentially be creepy, not the age difference.

Clothes are not a problem for me (age on the ID card is). Maybe because I've known a few *big age gap* couples around me who lived a happy married life, as long as both are legal and able to give consent, they have my blessing.

I thought that My Little Bride was a bit icky, but it got good ratings, so who knows.

I think Jang Hyuk does silly very very well. I guess it's because I've seen his oldies more than his modern image movies...but he is one hilarious man.

Re: the title. I remember reading that teenage girls in Korea believe drinking strawberry milk will increase their, er, bust size.

*is slightly creeped out*

I never heard that, but I suspect that the title might just be because strawberry milk is pretty popular in Korea (and Japan and Taiwan also).

Sure, but given the subject matter of the movie (a teenage girl (possibly) having an affair with her teacher), the connection to a young girl's desire to be more 'womanly' would make more sense (to me, at least).

It's possible. Not sure where that silly idea started, but from my Google search looks like back in 2008 some dodo on one of those TV variety shows said it.

Has about as much basis in fact as many other urban myths, but any idea - no matter how stupid - someone will believe it. At least the idea that blood type = personality seems to be dying out finally.

Forgot to mention that in Korea you can get strawberry milk stickers, clothes, plushies, lunch boxes, and a whole host of other things with the theme.

Ah, I remember they mentioned that in Soonjung Manhwa - which ironically featured an older male (not a teacher)/high school girl relationship. Usually I'd be creeped out by that but the male in that story seemed so naive and inexperienced and never expressed any sexual interest in the student so I eventually warmed up to it. It was all very sweet and chaste and surprisingly adorable, tbh. The guy was 30 but he never seemed like it because he was just so incredibly naive.

I don't like teacher-student story lines (AT ALL) but even I think it's a bit rich to automatically brand this story 'icky' without knowing anything about its dynamics... especially when many of the same people wouldn't bat an eyelash if the female were older.

Older women are cute and conflicted while older men are just plain ol' creepy. Got it.

" but I’m also leaving open the possibility that he’ll surprise us and go counter to his current action-and-abs beast-man image."

he's already done it in 5 senses of eros though?
He was kind of cute, sweet and thoughtful.

Back when before Jang Hyuk lost the baby fat and became "chiseled", he did "beta" very well in roles like for "Windstruck" (where he played a hapless teacher who was forever being pulled in all directions by Jeon Ji-heon's character).

In "My Little Bride." Kim Rae-won's wasn't exactly beta, being a player and all; he was just a goofy player-type.

I'll check it out just to see how it is. I won't make any judgements right now. If they cast a complete unknown, I'd be happy. Give the young potentials a chance instead of always picking a pretty face with fame! :)

If he's her high school teacher, wouldn't this relationship be illegal? I'm not sure what the laws are in Korea but I know in some places even if the student is technically of consenting age, if it's a teacher-student relationship then it's still illegal. The problem isn't just age but the power imbalance inherent in that setup.

I'm not really a fan of this type of relationship (regardless of the genders involved, although it does seem somewhat more problematic if it's a male teacher-female student). I'd be more on board if it was a college professor - that's still unethical, of course, but it would feel like the student had more control in the situation. It just feels like it would be so much easier to manipulate a teenager with their often naive, inexperienced, easily impassioned natures. (I'm not saying every teenager is like that but many are.)

From what I've heard, they already started filming and the actress has been casted. Her name is Jo Bo-A. I'd like to learn more about the script before I speculate. So far, I read that the student is in love with her teacher, but it doesn't specify if the teacher corresponds? Although otherwise, why would they be calling it a romance? Maybe it will be a platonic thing? Who knows?

I'm not concerned about Jang Hyuk not been able to pull off romance because, hmm, he has done it many times before and he hasn't always played "aggressive" types. He played a sweet and pacific hero in Daemang (more prone to commut suicide than fight), he was wonderfully sweet and beta in Windstruck as someone pointed out. In fact, Jang Hyuk in his interviews comes off as incredibly gentle and introspective so I totally see him in a role like that. My biggest issue with this movie is I don't necessarily trust this director. But I won't judge until I watch it.

Jo Bo Ah? Isn't that the girl from Shut Up Flower Boy Band? I really liked her in that drama - she was green, but good writing and great chemistry with Sung Joon helped her a lot.

Does the story say if the teacher falls in love with the student too?

It could be a What's Up scenario. Where the student falls in love alone and the teacher's role is to just give her some life lessons and help her grow up.

I've only seen Jang Hyuk in two projects, if I remember correctly and yes, he seems to be working the intense vibe most of the time. He does that very well, I have to say.

I have no idea how he'd be in this ...... I'm trying to picture it.

Perhaps the story will involve a one-sided love thing and it ends with the main characters getting together in like 10 years or whatever. I dunno.

I like Jang Hyuk though, he's always interesting to watch.
