TOP in talks to headline Tazza 2

Brace yourselves for a big round of yes-no-yes-no-maybe-we’re-not-sure-yet announcements, because Big Bang idol TOP is reportedly lining up a leading movie role in Tazza 2: The Hand of God, which would be the sequel to the hit 2006 film of the same name (also translated The High Rollers) which starred Jo Seung-woo. Maybe. Possibly. They’re negotiating it out.

According to TOP’s reps over at YG Entertainment, they are “considering favorably” and working out casting details with the film production team, though they haven’t made final decisions yet. A few other It Stars of the twentysomething generation have been buzzed about as contenders for the lead character role of Ham Dae-gil, such as Kim Soo-hyun and Song Joong-ki, but right now it’s all about TOP. Or is it always all about TOP? Ponders.

I will say that TOP did apparently improve his acting after his drama debut with action series IRIS, where he was… I hesitate to say this, but painful is the word that comes to mind. He looked amazing as a hired assassin, all badass and gorgeous, and then… and then he spoke, and you couldn’t undo the effect of that no matter how awesomely he looked the part. But then he went on to war film Into the Gunfire, and also filmed the action movie Alumni, the latter of which plans to release later this year. So perhaps he’s ready for Tazza 2? Maybe? Glass is half full?

Tazza 2 will be directed by the original film’s director, Kang Hyung-chul, who has filmed several more hits in the intervening years—the heartwarming comedies Speedy Scandal and Sunny, for instance. It’ll take its story from the second part of the four-part original manhwa, which is titled Hand of God.

You're the best, you know that?

and yeah...if TOP is in it, I'm going to watch it. I don't even care if I'm interested in the plot, honestly.

TOP is just...TOP. You can't not watch.

Reading some of the comments below gave me pause. I really didn't see or even read about his appearance on Iris, so I really have no expectations of him prior to watching "Into the Fire". But I thought he was good, not the good-for-a-beginner grade, but a really good and solid performance. Acting is really subjective, I guess. :)

Correction: The original Tazza was directed by Choi Donghoon, not Kang Hyunchul. The gent was responsible for making The Big Swindle, Jeonwoochi and The Thieves.

There was an interview with Taeyang and the other members that was really funny. They had a schedule somewhere and they had to stay in a hotel with a pool/jacuzzi, so they decided to go swimming. Usually, TOP stays behind, but then they got almost had a heart attack when they saw TOP swimming towards them, with no shirt on.

Not sure if there was a video, but there were photos. :)

actually, i remember him saying in an interview that if an acting part really required him to be topless as in a non-fanservice-y way, then he'd do it. let's hope he does this part and we finally get the reveal! lol.

I highly doubt that will ever happen. He has a lot of issues with his body due to formerly being overweight and I don't think he will ever be comfortable enough to show off his body to the world. It's okay though. Imo, he's the sexiest idol in K-pop and he's almost always fully dressed. The man was made for suits anyway. I do hope he will eventually come to terms with his body issues though, just for his own peace of mind.

I am completely biased when I say that he should take it (and I've only seen him in IRIS, so that should tell you). Honestly, I would be more assured (in regards to acting ability) if someone like Kim Soo Hyun ended up being cast. But maybe he is ready, my bias would like me to believe so.

'He looked amazing as a hired assassin, all badass and gorgeous, and then… and then he spoke, and you couldn’t undo the effect of that no matter how awesomely he looked the part' LOL hahahahahaha... Love TOP. Sometimes I think me liking Big Bang is all because of TOP.

On his acting. Well, I won't called him bad but he is not that amazing either. I already watched all his movies and I'm neutral on this but who knows he maybe amazing in Alumni. But he sure got the badass look that they looking for.

I think TOP's drama debut was in I am Sam. Though, his character in that drama did not require any serious acting, he only needed to be his cool and badass self. TOP really improved in Into the Fire so I am looking forward for his future roles

TOP is definitely eye candy, so let's hope his acting improves A LOT. However, I'll not likely see this one regardless, because the action movie genre is just not my shtick (leaves my nerves jangled for hours afterward). Looks like a lot of the twenty-something idol set realizes it needs to diversify its talent offerings in order to remain relevant in the entertainment industry. If he signs on for this, I hope it'll turn out to have been a good career move.

Laica, when my friends here tease me about my grabby hands and straightforward appreciation of the male form, I just explain to them that it's really all about the science.

I am in awe of the way that two people's genetic material combine to create such an amazing and individual new being.

It's really all about the miracle of genetics for me. Can I help it if they're GORGEOUS?

Kim Woo-bin definitely! although Woo-bin's face tends to be more harsher and stronger while T.O.P is more prettier but the two could be brothers.

@konyel

I agree. While he isn't a pretty boy by flowerboy standards, he definitely has a softer look than KWB (which is why the poor dude gets type-casted to the high heavens).

And to prove the resemblance(s)...

I haven't really seen the resemblance between Woo Bin and TOP before. But Hong Jong Hyun and TOP, yeah, I do agree that they have similarities, though I wasn't able to see it at first, too. My roommates and I were watching Wild Romance then, and they kept on insisting that HJH looked like TOP. Both were non-Big Bang fans and they only know how TOP looks like because I had a picture of him in front of my cabinet.

@konata:

I'm not a Big Bang/Top fan too, lol. Only know of their/his existence 'cos my friend and mom like them.

There is a running connection I sense...

Jo Seungwoo was great in the first movie, so it's going to be hard to anyone who will be casted in the sequel.

Ahh, TOP my love!!!!!!

I actually do like him as an actor. I laughed through his parts in IRIS forreal, but I do believe he has improved-- for Into the Gunfire he was really good with his straight-laced character and he had Kwon Sang Woo and Cha Seung Won to rub off on him, too. I see he has found a niche in the action genre, which I feel is atypical of idol/actors who are most often cast in romantic comedy or melo stuff or as, like, the ~maknae~ if it's another genre besides those.

I'm looking forward to Alumni and would be more than down to watch this movie, too, if he takes it. I don't think Big Bang will be doing much for a while so why the heck not? Boost the filmography, I say!

T.O.P in Iris was always good to look at... in screencaps and stills. But T.O.P in Into the gunfire was heartbreaking. Not because he died (he died in Iris too but all I felt was relief) but because he was able to really sell his character and bring life to that young man turned soldier. His eyes was shining in that film, I don't know if it was some camera trick but darn those eyes haunt me for months.

I went to Big Bang's LA concert back in NOV and witness this for this birthday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh_dgauQ3Rk

it's like a soft-core version of krumping a-la Top style. I was in love and still am. Hee. That was THE highlight of the concert, for me.

I am a grandmother, not a fangirl, but TOP doesn't need to act. He just radiates charisma and the camera reflects it.

His English in IRIS was painful, but then, I think that about most Korean actors who try to speak English for a role, although their English is better than my Korean.

Oh yes.. Hong Jong Hyun looks like a good mix of TOP & Kim Woobin. Can they cast HJH instead of TOP??? Haha.

Boy is in need of a breakout role. HJH has swoon-worthy model looks & decent acting skills (minus that wooden "chic" performance in Cyrano though). He just need that 1 memorable role to propel him to the next IT model-turned-actor, ala Kim Woobin and Lee Jongsuk.

I with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY on this.

He impressed the shiat out of me in White Christmas, even more so than Kim Woo Bin in the same show and LJS in IHYV. (Moo-jin, I liked for the first 10-12 eps).

The thing is... with an industry so focused on looks, he isn't as accessible as the other two? And he doesn't look overtly manly (KWB) or cutesy (LJS) so I guess it's a hard sell in the Korean Entbiz. LSH is also in need of a breakout role (not a fan of his) since he wants to be an actor more than a model - but similarly is in the same rut.

In general, I do like the roles that HJH has chosen. Quite a variety despite some overlaps here and there. I need to catch his cameo on OCN's Hero!

TOP's drama debut with with I Am Sam, which was crap all around, even with TOP in dress at the end.

Then in IRIS, he was cool, but his lines, the few that they were, wer just badly written and sounded dumb.

71: Into the Fire, he was awesome. Really did well. Yet, he's not the most expressive young man (see any Big Bang stage) so a worn-out army private might simply have suited him well. Still, he had more than one expression and his timing was good and he matched up well against far more experienced and knowledgeable actors, so yeah, he did really well.

Admittedly, I'm a hugely TOP-biased... But I watched Into The Fire and tried to keep the fangirling to a bare minimum, and I still think he did really well in it. He held his own beside the likes of Cha Seung-won and Kwon Sang-woo, so that says a lot of TOP's acting chops. Also, I'm saying this as a fan who cringed every time TOP said his lines in IRIS.
