Song Joong-ki reports for army duty

Aw, I hate this part. Time to send another one off to basic training. It’s enlistment day for Song Joong-ki, who reported for duty on August 27 at the Gangwondo Chuncheon military base. He’ll be serving active duty in Chuncheon, and is notably the first celebrity to enter the army after the entertainment unit was recently abolished. He held a fan meeting last week with over 1400 fans, and spent the rest of his time before enlistment day with his family.
The 28-year old actor debuted in 2008 with a small part in the film A Frozen Flower, memorable early roles in dramas Triple and Will It Snow For Christmas, and went on to star in hits like Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Tree With Deep Roots. Last year he had a fantastic year as a headliner, with the melodrama Nice Guy and the movie A Werewolf Boy. It’s kind of amazing how recently he was a fresh-faced newbie; he’s certainly come a long way in just five years.

Sometimes I wish they would just get the group enlisted at the same time. That way they could have a glorious comeback afterwards and we wouldn't have to deal with a broken group in the mean time.
Not going to happen I know, but sometimes I think that would be better.

I think that would be awesome, for a group to all enlist at the same time. FT Island have said a few times that they want to do that but, no company would let a group do that because it wouldn't make sense, financially. Pity though.

I wonder is TOP would have the mandatory post army shower scene, methinks not, I don't mind separate enlistments because they do well with solo projects that could definitely sustain YG and the audience. But it is heartwarming when people like 2PM want to enlist together, that would be quite the comeback.

I'm going to miss seeing Song Joong Ki on TV. I loved his TV drama roles in Triple, OB/GYN Doctors, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and Nice Guy & his films Penny Pincher and A Werewolf Boy. He has truly grown as an actor and his body of work has shown his progression from a rookie actor into a leading man. I also loved seeing him as one of the original cast members on the early days of Running Man. All the best and I look forward to his return to acting after he completes his 2 years with the army.

It seems like 4ish years ago he played the butler to yoon eun hye in My Fair Lady(he was the employee before yoon sang hyun's character took over as the main butler), so we really only saw him for a few minutes. Look at him now!

Of all of them reporting for MS so far, I've only cared about him and Hyun Bin's absences! Still haven't seen HB yet, except in commercials. So it's really a longer absence than 2years! Tears.......

BTW I read somewhere he is going to join Yoo Seung-ho's unit. And Real Man already announced, that they would be filming there in future. So maybe, maybe we'll get to see him on this show!?
Anyone else watching Real Man? This week it seems to be incredibly difficult to find the ep or is it just me?

Does anyone know why they usually go at age 28sih? I've wondered why they don't go way earlier to get it out of the way. Or maybe they want to get their foot in the door and get established in the biz before leaving?

In general (ie. not limited to celebrities), those in college tend to enlist at the end of their sophomore year, which is what many of SJK's friends did and what he was weighing as well. But he decided to give acting a try (always had an interest but parents were opposed), took some acting classes (in secret), and didn't tell his parents until he signed a contract with SidusHQ, which is how he made his debut in 2008. Everyone has a different story and his own reasons, but in SJK's case anyway, that's what he did--establish himself before enlisting.

I was always wondering about that as well. It seems so late...
Here in Germany we abolished compulsory military service lately (and it was only 6 months in the end anyway...), but the guys had to go after school and before starting university.

Probably 'cause most young male celebs are spend their late teens and early 20s starting and establishing their careers, as opposed to non-celebs who could easily take a leave of absence from college like they all do. That's why the celebs put off enlistment until 28 or 29 when they actually have a career to get back to.
That's why most celebs can't and don't enlist at 19 like Yoo Seungho because he's had a stable decade-long career and him leaving for 2 years wouldn't hurt his popularity one bit.
