Reality-variety program Beating Hearts adds to cast

I’m not one to follow varietyland too closely, especially shows that aren’t even on air yet, but chalk it up to the curiosity factor of shows experimenting with format, as with the upcoming Beating Hearts (and, fine, also Park Ki-woong may have something to do with it). This is the upcoming reality-docu show where a group of celebrities will train to become firefighters, and in addition to the three actors initially announced (Park Ki-woong, Lee Won-jong, Jo Dong-hyuk), the program has now also added Jeon Hye-bin (God of the Workplace, Yacha) and Choi Woo-shik (Rooftop Prince, where he was the adorable Yellow Joseon Ranger, also of Ten 2) as the maknae.

Given that the program that Beating Hearts sorta-maybe-unofficially models itself after is called Real Men, I’m glad to see a woman up in this mix, and not just as pretty wallpaper but participating in all the hard training with the rest. Not unlike Real Men, this show will throw the cast off the deep end by making them live a firefighter’s life for six straight days. They’ll be boarding at a firefighters’ school in Busan, and while one week isn’t a terribly long time, I do think that immersing yourself in hardcore training without time off could make for a pretty grueling experience. And pain is always great for variety!

The show is currently only slated for a pilot run on SBS with two episodes scheduled to air in early September, so we’ll have to wait and see if it’ll be enough of a success to merit a full-fledged run.

bull ****. the only thing that trains a firefighter is a real unfaked fire.
but I wouldnt want them to put the participants really in danger. fires are such a scary thing.

That can't possibly be true. There must be training, or more firefighters would die in fires because there's a whole set of newbies in panic mode not knowing what the hell they're doing and just winging it.

(If there were any job I'd say was least likely to be taught via the "just throw them in the deep-end" method of training, I think firefighting would be it. As you say, fires are scary.)

Now that there's a woman, I'm even more intrigued. (I'd been mildly interested before. Because of Park Ki-woong. ;))

what I mean is no matter how much the firefighter would practice a real fire is still completely different people really might be in the building most of all, really afraid, try saving a panicking person .... so this show will be more than fake. but that is ok. i would like it to be as fake as possible.

Making a “reality-variety” (whatever that means) about fire fighting training then was probably not the brightest idea, yeah?

I don't follow variety programs....so this is clearly not my area of interest..

But I like Park Ki Woong ;-)

Isn't more like they will train alongside fire fighters: emergency drills, climbing lots of stairs while holding hoses, learning about the gear fire fighters use. In the U.S. fire fighters are also first responders so maybe, if it's the same for S. Korea, they'll know what it's like to do that.

Jeon Hye-bin was on another program, Law of the Jungle, with other celebrities where they went to Africa or somewhere and she developed a tough image for roughing it out there. I guess they hope to continue that image here.

Choi Woo-shik is the cutest. The things he can do to make those adorable faces are just amazing. Think I might check this out just for him :-)

Firefighting training? Sounds like fun. I've been through US Navy 's firefighting class several times (required training every couple of years) . Hot wet dirty. I'm. sure they'll be okay.

Glad there's a woman in the cast. This show sounds interesting, but mostly because of Park Ki-woong.

I would watch anything with him, I just want to see some more of him before he goes away. But what I really want to see is Covertly Grandly. gah, why don´t our cinemas show Korean movies? then again, the ticket is too expensive for me anyway. 13 euros. with our salaries, it is the same as... well, if americans paid 65 dollars.

This looks interesting.

As the wife and mother of a family of firefighters, and from a U.S. perspective, I can easily see this group training at a firefighting academy. But participating in a real life situation would be out of the question. There's no 'pretend' when entering a burning building.
The academy/training school have orchestrated burns for the trainees and those are scary enough.

The odd thing (to me) is the inclusion of a female for this SK show. Women are treated differently from their male counterparts in most all variety programs. They simply don't participate fully when the rougher tasks come up. Women in the US are expected to go toe to toe with the guys while training - equal footing for everyone. I just don't see it happening in Korea, reality show or not.

I can't believe you said that. Yes as a whole, women may be treated differently, but as a woman from a firefighting family, I would figure that you would have familiarized yourself with the requirements there before saying such things. Just as in the U S, they were required to do the same training as the males for the jobs that they went out for. As a matter of fact the female actor was the one that always won in the competition to have all firefighting equipment on correctly and quickest etc. She's a pretty tough chick to be so petite. These actors, while they were not involved long enough to used to dealing with the emotional part of the job, went through the same training that everyone else did to get there and were quite proud of themselves, as they should have been.

Er being a female myself who has trained with men before, I have to say quite or most of the actresses don't have muscle tone. I mean look at the arms and legs.

Forget about whether it's 6 days or not, is she going to be able heft and lift stuff? Running on the treadmill is way different with a heavy uniform, tanks and equipment.

Please do not disgrace females, that's all I say. To this day I still cringe at the cadet who couldn't even lift a full pack but had her male cadets carry it when she got too tired during a march. If you want to do a physical job, make sure you are fit before attempting it. I do not want the guys to pander to her gender.

I'm inclined to agree. I am all for women participating and would love absolutely nothing more than for everyone watching to see a woman (or two) right in there with the men, working hard and handling it just fine. Jeon Hye-bin represents not only herself, but the entire female gender (unfortunately). If she can't hack it, that's going to give every single chauvinistic, sexist, misogynistic jerk out there fuel for his crap. xp For the sakes of all the women in Korea, I hope she handles it like a boss.

Jeon Hyebin is awesome in variety shows, though! Been a fan of her in variety shows since the X-Man days. She'll do well. She's like Hyori-lite anyway.

Choi Wooshik so cute. It's nice to see he has a variety show gig. It'll increase his exposure. :)
