Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum confirm new melodrama Secret
by girlfriday
Upcoming KBS melodrama Secret has confirmed its leads, and finally revealed a bit more of its plot. On the upside, that means Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum have signed on to return to dramaland. On the downside, it sounds like another cold revenge drama about falling in love with someone you’re not supposed to fall in love with, and I’ve just about had it up to *here* with those. Okay, it’s not Secret’s fault that Shark came before it and left me cranky, but I’m also not excited either.
The new Wednesday-Thursday show is being helmed by the PD of Dream High and comes from a newbie writer who won a screenwriting contest with this story. It centers around a “bad guy” and an “innocent but tenacious woman,” in a deadly melodrama about a man who falls in love with the woman who killed his lover. Wait, doesn’t that make her the bad one? Or is this the kind of show where everyone is bad just in varying degrees? If that’s the case, at least it sounds more like Nice Guy than Shark.
Ji Sung plays a second generation chaebol who “has everything but a good personality.” I know they meant it in the He’s a bad bad boy sense, but that’s a pretty hilarious description of anybody. Hwang Jung-eum plays the heroine who never gives up, even when her life comes crashing down in one fell swoop. She sacrifices her future for love when she goes to prison in her boyfriend’s place, and then gets dumped in exchange for her devotion. But she comes out a much stronger woman, determined to make a fresh start and live differently.
Hm by my count, if the hero loses his girlfriend in the same crime that sends the heroine to jail, that means she’s not actually the killer. Not that it makes it any less complicated, right? The point will be the revenge/secret/twist of fate that brings them together, in their hurricane of a romance.
Ji Sung, who’s a month away from his wedding to real-life girlfriend Lee Bo-young (I Hear Your Voice), will be going from wedding to drama shoots without a break for a honeymoon, the poor guy. Let’s hope the drama pulls out some good melodramatic flair and makes the sacrifice worth it.
Secret follows Wednesday-Thursday drama Sword and Flower, and premieres in September.

This also sounds like it picked up a lot of the plot lines from Queen of Ambition. Gee, another chabeol prince, what a surprise.
Not too sure about this one. But on the other hand, 1st episode of "Her Legend" look more promising than I had figured, so might be something watchable for the next couple months.

Hard to tell from the first episode, but so far it is looking a lot better than how the description and trailers looked. At least the kid can actually act and not just stare and cry.

Hope this one is good. The twisted revenge/love thing is one of my favorite tropes, but I have yet to find my twisted revenge/love drama because all the ones I've seen have thoroughly failed me

I hope she 'll at least do a cameo (a long one) in his drama since he's heading back to work right after the wedding.

Can Lee Bo Young be the public defender who will defend the girl? ;) I'm clearly having I Hear Your Voice withdrawal.

All I have to say is: I hope there is a twist to the story cause frankly it's not exciting at all at the moment. Probably won't watch.

Seeing that Lee Bo-young is getting married, hope it's OK to go a bit off topic. With the Korean entertainment industry notorious for being copy cats, I wonder if agencies and production companies might be pressuring the large group of 30-something celebrity single actresses to also get married for PR purposes? Off the top of my head: Kim Tae Hee, Gong Hyo Jin, Song Hye Gyo, Kim So Yeon, Shin Min Ah, Ha Ji Won, Son Ye Jin, Choi Ji Woo, Chae Rim, etc.
And with Korea's low birth rate problem, wouldn't the Korean government love to "encourage" celebrity actresses to show their patriotism by having several babies? Within the last couple of years, seems like there's been a morality shift in kdramas that getting pregnant before marriage is fine and to be celebrated. And in one recent drama season, seemed like every actress was pregnant, culminating in one drama where both the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law were pregnant at the same time.
Just wondering here.

Wouldn't they have to find a potential boyfriend first, before they get married off? I don't think it's that easy marrying a celeb + all the problems that comes with having a famous other half.
Anyway, best wishes to Lee BoYoung and Ji Sung, they were one of the super long running couples I was rooting for!!

All true. But several already have long term boyfriends, and wouldn't be unusual for many others to have secrets boyfriends. With the biological clock ticking and industry/government pressure, I can see a flood of celebrity marriages in next couple of years with a bunch of babies to follow.

Love Ji Sung. Not that big of a fan of Hwang Jung Eum though. I've only seen her in Can You Hear My Heart and Full House 2. Didn't love either of her characters in those!

I really liked Can You Hear My Heart but was turned off by Hwang Jung Eum's acting. Her character was so HYPER that I was anxious everytime she was on screen. It's probably why I have avoided her dramas afterward.
On the other hand, I like Ji Sung so I'll check out the first episode. You never know, HJE may just surprise me!

I think she is one of the best k-drama actresses. she has very natural acting. she is like a chameleon. she was amazing at "Giant" I think plot of this drama is promising. only problem is hard to believe the love between the leads when you know at BTS one of them is making marriage preparations but saying love words to his drama partner at same time! this kind of situations always keep me away from main characters. but I will check it for HJE!

I like revenge melodramas only if the narration comes out syncing with storyline. melodramas are quite heavy so silly dialogues distracts my dark mood

Lol. Lip service, that's all.
Have you seen a single life partner saying something negative about the professional choices of his/her sweetheart? In 4 years of dramawatching, didn't happen once.

Why so bitter LOL. How do you know if she actually sincerely think it's good? JS himself like it before he show it to LBY. HJE too She usually good at picking her projects. They both rejected many other scripts for this. They can get BSB as 2nd leads, wasn't easy with his absent from k drama 2 yrs. LDH also just finished her last drama, she must be tired but still want to join. And with JS-BSB wedding coming closer they must be very busy but still want to do this. So there must be good things in the script they all likes, and the script did won award.
Well, for me seeing is believing. Never to judge anything before I try it myself or has proofs. So I'll watch it first.v

Hey, Kdrama. How about giving us a bad *girl* every once in a while? All your tortured male leads grow wearying, especially when there's a whole gender of untapped angst out there.

Love Hwang Jung-eum.
She is smart at her drama choices. They always had good ratings and good reviews. I believe this time too.
And JS x HJE on Hi Mart CFs were very cute. Can't wait.

This drama plot doesn't sound exciting at all. Then again, I didn't find the plot to innocent man exciting but the drama was great.
Ohhhhh so that's who Hwang Jun Eum is - no I hated her character in Can you hear my heart. Hated her acting and character and look. I had to give up watching it b/c she was such a turn off.
Pass this drama.

The plot sounds like tried and over used formula but it depends on how the director executes the drama and on that basis I'll give it a try since I am excited for Ji Sung but Hwang Jung Eum- not much. The leading lady has a tendency to over act and somehow her dialogue recitation or maybe the way she talks is distracting and irritating for me...She has a weird habit of going "bug eyes" even doing a normal conversation... anyways...it maybe good since the drama is giving her a lot of dimension to act so I hope she merges with the role and not over do things...
