Hong Soo-hyun takes on weekend family drama
by girlfriday
Glass half full: the lovely and talented Hong Soo-hyun (Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love) is headlining a new drama. Glass half empty: it’s a long weekend family drama. Glass three-quarters-full (and I’ll throw in a cherry on top if we get a good male lead for her): it’s sounds like the heartwarming kind, full of sibling hijinks and makeshift family acceptance. At least that’s the hope anyway.
The new MBC weekend family drama is set to follow I Summon You, Gold, and is another of those famously unwieldy weekend titles, called Will You Love And Give It Away. It’s about a couple who remarries in their twilight years, forcing two families of grown adult children to become one big happy Brady-Bunchy family. That sounds kind of awesome… that is, as long as you don’t throw a birth secret wrench in there, or make two of the siblings-to-be in love or something. Let’s not go there.
Hong Soo-hyun will play one of the daughters, described as very thoughtful, rational, and cautious about everything. She’s also a very independent person, so she might be slow to come around to the sudden new family members. The actress is the first cast member to sign on, and is reportedly finalizing negotiations.
The drama comes from the PD of the hit Kim Nam-joo weekender Queen of Reversals, and the writer of family dramas Ugly Mooncake and Just Be Like Today. It’s described as warm thoughtful family fare, about the trials and tribulations of two families forced into this new situation, and their eventual acceptance of each other as a new family unit.
Will You Love And Give It Away will air on Saturdays and Sundays starting in September on MBC.

YES! I love warm, heartfelt dramas (like You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly...and another one which I don't remember the name of..but it starred the actress from "Mother").

do you have any recommendations for other warm, heartfelt dramas? I'm watching Can you hear my heart with my mom and it's so much more intense and dramatic than I thought it would be...she takes everything that happens so personally lol...

Yay! Hong Soo-Hyun as a lead in a new drama? Yes please! I've only seen her in The Princess' Man and maybe a few other dramas but she was AMAZING in there.
And also (totally irrelevant btw) is it just me or does she remind me of Kim Ah-Joong a bit?

I watched her in several dramas: Jang Ok Jung, Lie to Me, Tokyo Holiday, The Princess' Man and History of the Salaryman. She's good at playing villain and even better to be a good-but-not-stupid-girl. I love her most in HotS, how she failed Jung Kyu Won was so epic. I love their unusual plotline for second lead territory and after ep 5 until the end, I only watch their scenes. So, Yay for her leading role! Pair her with Jung Kyu Won once more, please. :")

Really didn't like Hong Soo-hyun in LTM but I blame that on the horrible writing. but LTM was where I recognized HSH as being that cute girl in one of the 1st K-dramas I watched (and I think one of her 1st roles, if not her 1st).
Took her a good decade to start getting 2nd lead roles and now she has moved on to being the female lead - good for her.

ah i liked her in Goodbye Wife ( i didnt watch jang ok jung , propably will never cause i'm a big fan of Dong Yi ahh i miss Han hyo joo ..) anyways the plot kinda reminds of Shut up family ( 120 episode of pure awesomeness) hope we will see something as simple and heartwarming as shut up family.. and crossing fingers for no birth secret ( i had my dose of that with YTBLSS)

If you're a fan of Dong Yi, never watch JOJ. Seungyeon sucks so bad as Dong Yi that I gave up during episode 21 of JOJ. She had too much screen time considering how bad she is at acting.

There will be a romance between siblings, surely? Or is that not really a weekend family drama kind of thing? I admit, I don't really watch them so maybe that kind of makjang element is only in prime time dramas.

Nope, weekend dramas are right behind daily dramas in terms of makjang. I'd bet good money that she'll fall in love with her stepbrother.

I just turned blind eyes to long dramas, which has more than 20 episodes. I lost my interest or patience quickly.

This'll give her so much exposure 'cause family dramas get high ratings and are literally watched by families. This is good for her to establish a fanbase plus get used to being the lead without the pressures of a normal 16-episode drama with the live-shoot system and all. :)

LOVE her!!
She did an excellent job in 'Goodbye Wife'. I've pretty much liked her in everything I've seen her in, including the music video she did with Kim Hyun-joong 'Lucky Guy'.
Will look forward to watching her in this provided that it gets subbed.

if the story will be so warm-hearted, though i don't think it'll be funny, like SHUT UP FAMILY, then i'm in.
i really love that sitcom, the characters developed really well in that sitcom through this remarry set up

This show sounds cute and heartwarming. I loved The Brady Bunch, so that's a plus. But, after YTBLSS ends, I'm taking a break from weekend family dramas. It really is a lot to commit to, and I don't think I could follow a 50+ episode drama. Maybe some day, but not in the next few months.

YES. It's about time for her to lead a drama.
I watched Jang Ok Jung, her version of Queen Inhyeon was not likable yet I couldn't really dislike either. She did a great job.

Hong Soo Hyeon was absolutely GORGEOUS in The Princess' Man, that was her best role in quite a while, and she's got talent to burn.
Let's hope this one is actually watchable, I'm pretty weary after the horrific fail that YTBLSS is. I will at least give this one a try for her, though I won't be holding my breath if the script is as bad as it was for YTBLSS.
