Action-romance hijinks in spy comedy The Spy
by javabeans
Ah, spy rom-coms. They must be a weakness of mine, because I just got excited to see all the promo material for the upcoming movie The Spy, which looks like it’s gonna be a mash-up of lots of familiar spy-action comedy stuff that we’ve seen before but still worth a laugh. The genre may produce a fair share of duds but hope remains strong; and how can you say no to such good-natured fun?
The Spy has also got my attention for taking a few stars with serious images and shaking down those stern faces with some jokey turns. Take for instance star Sol Kyung-gu, playing our hero spy who gets introduced in the trailer as the top spy in the country. Or at least, he was… “Until she came into the picture.”
Cue the unsuspecting wifey, Moon Sori, and suddenly Slick Spy turns into meek husband, his voice going up a few notches as he promises, “Okay okay, I’m on my way.” Ha. It’s a bit reminiscent of True Lies but the setup is a gold mine for laughs, particularly since I’ve gotten so used to seeing Sol Kyung-gu be the serious thriller actor (No Mercy, Public Enemy Returns, Silmido) that the movie totally plays with that expectation and gives you that double-take moment.
Enter Daniel Henney, the suspicious new figure who swoops in looking smooth and dapper and sweeps the wife off her feet. Hero-husband can do little to interfere given that he’s caught up in the biggest mission of his life and can’t risk blowing his cover with her, and can only sneak jealous looks. The trailer tells us, “He can stop terror, but he can’t stop his wife.” Especially when rival Daniel Henney is, um, endowed with plenty of good looks and possibly other things, as we see in the urinal scene when the spy headquarters reacts to a certain view and the female spy immediately offers, “I’ll go catch him.”
This movie is in the mix for the upcoming Chuseok holiday, which is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) movie-going occasions of the year. That makes it a good season for family-friendly fare and popcorn blockbusters, so The Spy fits right into that milieu—good, easy fun. I mean, I’m pretty sure I know how this movie goes even without seeing it, but I’m still totally going to watch it.
The Spy releases on September 5.

He was in the first Wolverine movie, although not for long. Honestly I'd recommend just watching his scenes instead of the whole movie (they're probably on Youtube or something) - it's terrible and this is coming from someone who was really looking forward to it.

It was just a short appearance in the beginning. He was the leading man in Shanghai Calling with Bill Baxton.
Lol @ Terrorist Ryan. I don't care if its bad I'm watching the hell out of it cause I love this cast.

He said recently in terms of Hollywood he'd only take leading roles now, mostly to fight racism in Hollywood. While I really, really like him as a person, I have to concede that in the movies/shows I've seen him in so far, his acting isn't always on spot. (And mind you, I say that having helmed subbing My Father when it first came out--twice, since the translations got lost the first time.)
But I would cheer for him definitely to get a lead role in a major blockbuster and bust those stereotypes. ^_^

I like him but his acting has been pretty wooden in most of his K-dramas. He was pretty decent in Shanghai Calling and he seems to be more at ease with English projects.
I think its because he doesn't speak Korean (maybe very little). Imagine not being able to understand the director etc on the set.

He speaks Korean better than before, according to him. He has a problem with the emotional curve of Korean (According to his interviews)--which my brother also refuses to do.
He had to make his Korean wooden again in My Father, and I haven't seen his skillz since then.
Despite that, I think he has his heart in the right place and I'll support anyone who wants to fight racism, even in small ways.

Thank you, I thought his Korean was still poor. I hope he 'll get more lead roles in the future.
I do have a soft spot for Asian actors in Hollywood. I hope some of them will at least make it and have a solid career there like Ken Watanabe who has worked with some great directors/producers and screen-writers like Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, Chris Nolan and David Goyer. I think he is in Nolan and Goyer's circle right now which is a good thing. Lately if he's not doing movies in Japan, he is doing one with Nolan or Goyer.
I hope Lee Byung Hun will get better roles like Watanabe. His English has improved a lot based on Sean's documentary.

Thank you, guys! I thought I was the only one who had noticed that his acting needs work. Everyone else seemed to be blinded (understandably so) by his godlike looks. :)
Hope he continues to grow and improve.
Yay for the goofy True Lies premise!
Anyone else like to see a Korean live-action Archer series?

I triiieed to like Seducing Mr Perfect, and have always had a soft spot for how Henney looks...but I thought his acting there was TOO LITTLE to be desired...sigh...

Already laughing my head off remembering Jamie Lee Curtis' striptease scene. Moon Sori can do sexy so I hope there is a scene like that with The Henney LOL.

After Moon SR's appearance in Legend, I only think of her as a totally not-sexy matronly 40-50 something.
This sounds like fun, but Moon SR.... I'm scared.

This might be a strange thing to say but I think that that's a problem that some conventionally very attractive men have. When they smirk (or even smile in certain ways), they can't help but look smarmy or smug. I don't think it's the composition of shots so much as the nature of his expressions.

When Henney was younger, I could tell he had Caucasian in him, but he sure is looking much more Korean as he's getting older. And looking a bit like Jung Woo Sung.
Regardless, he is looking fine.
And yay for Go Chang-seok! You know those ajhussis and ahjummas that are in every drama? He seems like even though you might not see him in a lead role, he's going to be one of those actors that appear in everything. He's cute like a bear.

Perhaps, he's the busiest supporting actor in Korea. This year I've already seen him in 3 dramas (Ad Genius, Monstar and Good Doctor). And yes, he's a very cute Bear!

Question: where can US residents see this movie this year? I usually watch my K dramas as they air on places like Dramafever, but I haven't heard of a similar place for movies. I actually live in ab area with a very large Korean population, so it wouldn't surprise me if some place around here showed it -but I was curious if there was an online site for K movies.
I love spy comedies. They tend to be predictable, but when they're done right, I don't mind.

Daniel Henney. I watched him in Seducing Mr Perfect and Spring Waltz. He looks handsome and good, until he speaks English. He sounds so unnatural, but still better than any Korean actors I've ever seen in drama.

Somehow comedy spy movies involving NK just don't seem quite as funny when stuff like this crosses the news wires:
"Kim Jong-un's ex-lover 'executed by firing squad'
Kim Jong-un's ex-girlfriend was among a dozen well-known North Korean performers who were executed by firing squad nine days ago, according to South Korean reports..."
