You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 41-42 [Open Thread]
by javabeans
We get some expected angst—okay, practically all the expected angst—but on the upside, our couple has finally earned themselves some adorable dating happiness, and there are enough of those interactions to make this weekend’s episodes pretty satisfying.
The funny thing is, plot-wise I would say there are more downturns than upswings, but because I’m so mentally detached from the dramz, it doesn’t feel like the angst overpowered the vibe of the show. And while it’s a failing on one level—the drama being unable to stir any emotion with its actual, yunno, plot—I consider it a boon to us. Since I doubt there’s a soul among us who cares more about the plot than the hugs. And the kisses. And the one-upping of insufferable gnat-type characters.
I think I’ll start with lowlights today, since a litany of the episodes flaws is basically the same thing as a plot outline. All the cute stuff is just filler, really, but I don’t mind. Fill away.
Lowlights, aka basically every plot point that happened:
Jun-ho’s mother storms the CF shoot, slaps her husband, and storms off. Look at that smirk on Yeon-ah’s face. She led Jun-ho’s mom here and she’s happy to see this. Hate you.
Jun-ho’s mother decides to divorce, which I’m not sure isn’t half-bluff, but Dr. Shin feels he’s done nothing wrong and doesn’t blink an eye. Jun-ho believes his father’s answer that he’s not romantically involved, but his mother has made up her mind.
Soon-shin’s (and Yeon-ah’s) drama premieres, and she’s the big surprise success story. Overnight she earns praise for her fresh acting, which I suppose is more of a highlight than a lowlight. But it makes Yeon-ah stew in jealousy… which is also more of a highlight. But! Yeon-ah is a viper who doesn’t stop at merely feeling jealousy and acts on it, and that makes her a terrible snake of a human being, which I realize is a sentence that doesn’t make sense. Bah. Hate you.
Yeon-ah even confirms in an on-air interview that her dating rumors are true, because she is de-lu-sion-al. Jun-ho calls her out on it, and she pulls the whole “I’m just concerned about what’ll happen to you if people gossip” shtick, because it’ll look twisted and unsavory with all the cracked-out family connections involved (assuming that Dr. Shin is having that affair).
Jun-ho stands up to Yeon-ah and sees through her “concern,” calling it what it is—blackmail. He tells her to go ahead, he doesn’t care if she spreads rumors. I want to applaud the stance, but I cringe knowing that Yeon-ah will surely find a way to outdo even my very low expectations for crap behavior from a crap person.
Jun-ho’s mother catches wind of Jun-ho dating Soon-shin and snoops in his room for proof. He confirms that they’re dating and she flips her lid. She orders him to break up with her, which he thinks is totally overblown (because it is), but she’s all, What about my pain. Because Dr. Shin, Mi-ryung, sins of the father, etc.
Reporter Park resumes snooping and decides that Soon-shin’s bio-dad isn’t the father who raised her. Mi-ryung sniffs that there’s no story there—but along the way he stumbled on an interesting tidbit. He alludes to the car accident that killed Dad, insinuating that she was with him when he died, and that puts Mi-ryung on edge.
She gets so drunk that the bartender calls Yeon-ah to collect her, then mistakes Yeon-ah for Soon-shin and cries that she’s so sorry, it was an accident, it wasn’t her fault Dad died.
WHY YEON-AH? WHY. Why does she get all these juicy secrets? She doesn’t deserve them!
Then Yeon-ah starts investigating about Soon-shin’s Dad’s death. Ugh ugh ugh. Of course it was too much to hope she’d use information in a way that wouldn’t hurt somebody.
Hye-shin’s terrible Douchy Ex-Husband makes a reappearance, trying to weasel his way back in with shamelessly extravagant gifts. Mom is gratifyingly immune to his smarmimess and sides with Hye-shin. Grandma is predictably the opposite, pushing Hye-shin to take him back. At least Hye-shin has grown a spine now and insists she won’t change her mind.
McDouchey runs into Bread Man Jin-wook in the yard and is a snot to him. But Jin-wook is the bigger man and refuses to rise to the bait, leaving the Ex to gloat and smirk to himself.
Then McDouchey intercepts Woo-joo after school and takes her out for ice cream, and Woo-joo ignores her phone calls from her mother because she knows Mom would be mad. But that means Hye-shin is freaking out because her daughter is missing, and she and Bread Man tear through the neighborhood looking for her before Woo-joo finally checks her goddamn phone.
On the very slight upside, it seems like she overhears her Douchey Dad taking a call from his ex-mistress, who begs him to take her back.
Douchey tries to instigate a fight with Bread Man when he sees him with Hye-shin, and embarrasses himself trying to get him to fight back. Oh honey, you don’t even know what kind of pain you’re escaping right now. He fakes injury and insists on taking it to the police, and even the cop rolls his eyes at his histrionics.
Unfortunately, this requires the cop to draw up a police report, and that pulls up Jin-wook’s ex-con history. Douchey crows in their faces, all, “I knew it!”
Upside: Hye-shin growls that Bread Man is a better man than he is and orders him to drop the case. Downside: The damage is done to Bread Man’s feelings, who looks utterly devastated to have his dark past trotted out before him.
At home, Woo-joo screams she’d rather live with Dad so her mother can live with her man, and ack, that sounds really bad to grandma and mom’s ears.
Jun-ho’s firm in refusing his mother’s demand to dump his girlfriend, so Mom then asks to meet Soon-shin. Oh god, if she pulls out a money envelope I’m going to scream.
Mom tells her plainly that she doesn’t like Soon-shin, her family background, or anything about her. She asks her to break up with Jun-ho, to whom Soon-shin doesn’t measure up. Gah. Remember when she was one of the better mothers in the show? This drama has short-term amnesia, I swear.
Jun-ho arrives home in time to see Yeon-ah dropping by yet again, and finally has enough. Shooting her an I know what you’re up to look, he tells her to stop coming around. Now taking bets on just how long she waits before ignoring him…
I find it unnerving that Soon-shin doesn’t tell Jun-ho about his mother’s makjang stunt, but at least he finds out anyway (thanks, Young-hoon!) and asks her to promise not to run away or weaken her resolve to stay with him. To his mother, he insists that the more she tries to break them up, the more he’s determined to keep seeing Soon-shin.
There’s an interesting turn with Mi-ryung, because now that Soon-shin is being nice to her, she’s beaming with happiness. And that makes her all the more scared that Reporter Park will reveal her role in the accident, and she’s desperate not to have Soon-shin leave her if she were to find out why her father died.
…and Yeon-ah walks into the house to hear Mi-ryung worrying about all this. OF COURSE. The worst possible person to entrust with a secret, ready to use it for her own gains.
So Yeon-ah makes the last-ditch plea of a crazy person, as befits the Typical Ankle-Grabbing Second Lead, by offering Mi-ryung a deal: If Mi-ryung breaks up Soon-shin and Jun-ho, then Yeon-ah will take this secret to the grave. Because, you know, she can’t be made to act like a decent person without strings attached.
Highlights:
This lowlights format really highlights (hur) exactly how little good plot there actually is in this drama, because almost everything in this highlight section is just a scene here or there. Cuteness, jokiness, or a light-hearted aside.
I will say that the one non-trivial point under this category is the Mi-ryung development, which I had long given up as being trite melodrama. It still isn’t incredibly exciting, but I do like the way she has been reacting to the tiny little daily happinesses of having a daughter, once she has given up trying to control her like a doll. After attempting to by Soon-shin’s love with a designer wardrobe, a fancy house, movie roles and a car (refused), it’s a bowl of porridge and a cheap hairpin that totally bowls her over.
The mere fact that Soon-shin is no longer scorning her is enough to make her happy, and she’s finally willing to accept what’s given rather than pout about what is yet withheld. Like being called Teacher instead of Mother, which no longer bothers her.
So it’s nice to have that very fragile peace threatened by the reporter’s sniffing around, because now there are stakes. More than just a dent to her public image, I mean. This one matters.
Chicken Ajumma continues to be petty and catty, but now that the couple is married I really don’t mind her—mostly because she’s alone in her bitterness and finds herself thwarted at every turn. She’s looking for excuses to harp on Yoo-shin, but Yoo-shin keeps her sunny attitude up and isn’t knocked down by her snide mother-in-law, so mostly this stuff is comic fodder.
Like how Yoo-shin does her new-bride duty of cooking breakfast for the family, and Chicken Ajumma stews because she’s expecting Yoo-shin to be terrible. Then she gloats to find out that Yoo-shin bought the breakfast dishes… only Yoo-shin is totally matter-of-fact about it. It’s no great shame to her—they’re both working wives, so why cook when she can buy?
Soon-shin is such a hit with her drama that there are some comments about her outshining Yeon-ah. Jun-ho totally smiles to hear it, which is adorable.
Jun-ho bursts into the studio in a panic, saying they’re in trouble, and drags her out in a flurry of confusion… to go on a date. Hee. He then says that after she’s famous she’ll get recognized and they won’t be able to go on dates in public anymore. Haha.
They go to an arcade in a sequence that goes on way too long, but I don’t mind that because it’s just cute all around. Better this than spending the time on crazy people. I love watching these two interact; I don’t know if it’s the characters or the actors, but they’ve got such rapport.
Jun-ho musters up his courage to break the “news” of his relationship to Young-hoon, then gapes when Young-hoon is all, Duh. Jun-ho: “How did you know?” Young-hoon retorts, “Is your IQ even 100?” Because of the obviousness and all.
Basically he’d been pretending interest in Jun-ho to push him along, and then says in mock-outrage, “Were you going to date her even if I liked her?!” Cute.
Soon-shin even starts getting recognized for the drama, and asked for her autograph. She teases, asking whether Jun-ho’s jealous of her popularity, and tells him to get her autograph now while he can. He taps his cheek to ask for the autograph there… and she does him one better with a full-on lip smack. Now that’s my kind of fanservice.

For the love of god, please stop doing this.
There are rules and you most likely read them, this is just a variation of "first" and we both know it.

There is a difference between gratitude and balant placeholder. Ivoire has been known to do this for a very long time and I'm getting sick of this. It has been only weeks since the commenting policy has been posted and she does this again and again.
It is not the "Thanks" that is annoying, but the fact that she replies to her own comment after she has written a longer one to be at the very top.
For example look at the first comments on those recaps:
You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 35-36
You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 27-28

Well, Ivoire hasn't replied to her own comment like that since the rules were posted so, what's the problem?

I understand why Kiko is saying this. There are way too many drama recaps where this keeps happening, and I thought this would stop after the rules came out, but still a nope I see....

kiko, Haruru,
I'd understand your being upset if Ivoire continues to reply to her own First comment AFTER the new rules come out. But she hasn't. The Rules on commenting were posted on July 17. The LSS eps you listed came out way BEFORE then. Ep 35-36 was on July 7. Ep 27-28 was even earlier, by a month, on June 9th. So there is no reason to be upset. Peace.

Fact is, Ivoire has been doing that 2 word comment on every single open thread, and never adds a single thing to the discussion. It is not a real "thank you", it is wanting to be the first poster. It got old several months ago.

Windsun,
Old or not, sb is gonna be first, right? So what if it is consistently the same person? I don't get why ppl r displeased w it. Is it bcos it 'robs' others of the chance to be first?
As for only TQ and nothing else, many others do it, see #3 below. You seem to be a reasonable person, can u illuminate?

First of all, in general I’m uncomfortable with discussing an individual commenter in a DB thread— I think it’s better to focus on discussing behaviors. And now that we have the “Report this comment” feature, I think it’s more appropriate to use that and/or email JB if we see a problem. The relative lack of acrimony on this site is one of DB’s most appreciated and most distinguishing features, and I think it’s up to each of us to try to keep the peace. However, in this instance, I feel the need to add my 2¢ because I feel that Ivoire’s character is unfairly being sullied.
I truly understand being irked by (what we perceive to be) people taking cuts in line. In fact, I complained about it once two or three years ago, and the two responses I got to my comment basically said “we can post wherever we damn well please”. Yeah, some queue-cutters are jerks, however I think some are more like ebullient puppies. But since there wasn’t a policy in place, I just learned to ignore it. Also, let’s remember that what’s considered to be rude can vary from person to person, and from culture to culture. Some cultures don’t use a lineup system and people from those cultures may have very different perceptions of commenting etiquette.
My sense from reading Ivoire’s comments is that she’s a very passionate, curious, respectful, grateful, and kind person. I noticed when she first came on the scene that she always said “thank you”—and she was rarely first in those days. I’d even say that based on the content of her posts, she’s exceptionally polite. I have no idea if this is correct or not, but my guess is that the reason she’s so often first nowadays is that she subscribes to DB’s RSS feed (which alerts her of new posts) and perhaps she uses an app or a script or something that facilitates a quick or automatic reply. (And even if that’s true, it doesn’t mean that her thanks aren’t heartfelt— I’d bet big money that they are.)
In any case, whether or not her thanks are genuine, as well as how and why she’s so often first, isn’t the point. What’s important is whether or not she’s following the commenting policy. It clearly says no “first” and no placeholder comments. It doesn’t say anything about “thank you” comments, nor about anyone habitually being first. So, provided she no longer uses her “Thanks!” as a placeholder, she has the right to continue doing what she’s doing. AFAIK, she hasn’t been using placeholder comments since the policy was announced, and we shouldn’t be debating someone’s commenting behavior prior to the policy if they’re not violating the policy now.

You are so right, Brian! Like I said before, the granny is one of the elderly-behaving-badly-and-does-not-deserve-respect in this drama that give all grannies (and mothers) a bad name...all thanks to the spectacularly warped minds of the writer/PD...
Seriously! The writer and PD really should really be institutionalised for all the crap they came up with in this drama!!!

You're right, it's amazing how much Chicken Ajusshi has grown on me over the course of the show. He used to be completely ineffectual and useless, but now he's so much fun! And a great dad.
Kwhat?!
July 30, 2013 at 3:59 AM
You're forgetting Chicken Ajusshi, who is very supportive of his kids and always trying to be a peacemaker.
And Hye Shin counts as a good parent as well, even though she's also lumped with the young adults.
But you're right, it's a pity that almost every person over 35 is completely selfish and self-absorbed. Can't Dad just come back as a ghost or something? We need SOME kind of sanity amongst the "adults."

You are quite right about Granma. She has no sense of the pain or feelings of her daughter-in-law or grandchildren. At times, there appears to be some redemption for her, then she spoils it all with her nonsense logic.
Why should Hye Shin stick by her Douchbag ex? He doesnt deserve her. I am begining to get really annoyed with their wee one as well - adding to the fact that she is far from adorable looking, she is acting like a brat. If they got a cuter child, perhaps.....
As for Soon Shin, you can feel Granma's jealousy - perhaps that Soon Shin has a perceptionally better life given to her by someone that Granma hates. I think Mom has recovered from her anger and is acting like a Mom should - giving Soon Shin the support that she needs.

Also liked the lowlights before the highlights. It reminds me of the way I eat a long slice of pineapple with a sweet end and a sour end. I like to eat the bitter end first and end with the sweet end. This is exactly how I feel reading the recap.
Wonderfully sweet ending. Sure hope we get a sweet ending to the drama.

Soon Shin and Junho are honestly the best thing about this drama. It's a pity that they were characters in a long drama. It would've been so much better if they were part of a shorter drama that was mostly about them.

I thought the Soon shin and Junho thing was way too long in the making, so I pretty much lost interest way back.
The only thing that keeps me watching, albeit on fastforward most of the time is for Breadman and Hye shin. Great she's grown a spine to go up against Grandma but Jeez, that kid of hers really need a slapping! I'm fed up with her tantrums and outbursts.

If you take out all the psychos, you would only have enough material left for about 3 episodes - at best.
But personally, I gave up on LSS long ago, the only one I have any interest in at all any more is the oldest daughter.

I get what you're saying, but I never meant that they should just take out all the psychos and then make this into a shorter drama. I meant that I wish IU and Jo Jung Seok, who have really great chemistry, should have starred together in a drama with better plotting and less batshit crazy family drama. If this show had focused more on IU as the underdog who finally gets recognition as a star actress, without all the family issues, then I believe it could have sustained 16 episode drama.

I wouldn't want them to be in a 16-eps drama--it would be too short!

This drama should have been MUCH shorter or they should have added another writer. So many characters with interesting things we could use and still we are running in circles. Date was cute but so reheated from all K dramas ever... I liked the kiss in the car: Go girl!
I'm sad we're having so little screentime for Lee Ji Hoon the super oppa. Can't he have a girl courting him in the next eps? He just lives by proxy thanks to SS & JH.

Yes, a writer who could come up with a decently meaty storylines without using every cliche in the book or turning characters into subhuman parasites! I feel like everything good (or what is barely carrying it) in this drama is good solely thanks to great acting (and improv) skills.

This drama needed both: to be shorter, and to have a better writer... I feel the characters have/had interesting aspects but the writers are not utilizing any of it and just going crazy cliched.
But by now we are all watching just for OTP, so yeah I have stopped caring about the 'plot' of this drama.

You would think that with so many episodes that at least some of the characters would take on more than one dimension, but for the most part you could look at ep1 and skip to 42, and everyone is still doing pretty much the same thing - Screaming Chicken Witch and all. I guess when you have no real plot, you fill in the episodes with characters that just keep doing the same thing over and over.

Me too! I also tune in every week to watch Soon-shin and Jun-ho. If the show got one thing right, it was pairing IU and JJS as our leads. They’ve got such great chemistry that I’ve totally bought into our shin-shin couple being together hook, line and sinker.
There were a few people in the Soompi forum that were a bit disappointed in the arcade date because they were wanting something more romantic for our couple, but I actually thought it was perfect. It was a joy watching them enjoy their time together. That’s not to say I don’t need the skinship, as I always get a thrill watching the various ways Jun-ho touches Soon-shin whenever he sees her.
And ever since the eye contact after the first kiss, I’m now focusing more on every look and glance they exchange. JJS’s expressions are just awesome. I can’t help feeling some of the expression’s on IU’s face are genuine affection for JJS.
Even though there are a lot of frustrating things about this drama, I’m actually going to miss seeing SS and JH when YTBLSS comes to an end.

I totally agree with everything you said! You have said what was exactly on my mind but you have said it so eloquently, so beautifully, so perfectly!! Thank you so much for putting into words what was on my mind for me to savour reading them. ;)
Although I agree that what IS right about this drama (the only thing that is right with this drama, in my humble opinion) is the perfect, sublime, awesome pairing of JJS and IU as the OTP, I do not credit the writer/PD for it.
I credit JJS and IU for MAKING the pairing work so marvellously, not because the PD/writer chose them to become the OTP. JJS and IU have made their pairing one which has become unforgettable and so perfect because they are so natural, so talented, so good at what they do, that they have managed to transform the nightmarish, insane material they have been given by the writer/PD and make their portrayal so good, so perfect, that THEY are the ONLY reason this sinking-ship-of-a-drama is still floating for so long.
JJS and IU have together, singled-handedly, made this drama watchable and entertaining despite everything else around them are falling spectacularly apart and torn asunder, beyond repair/redemption.

It is when the crazy second girl/guy tries everything to break apart the main couple hoping them come back because of it, even though they already know they:
-don't like/care about them anymore
-it will just make the lead girl/guy angry and hate them more
But what is that I hate the most?
Is when second bitch girl/guy breaks apart the main couple and the guy /girl heart broken lets go by the second girl/guy and does as them want since their love broke with them and they give up.
Ugh. I hate it the most.

oh gawd Yeon-Ah! I practically face-palmed when Mi Ryung ended up mis-confessing her part in Dad's death to Yeon-Ah! Why?? WHY?? Why her of all people? It would make better conflict if Jun-Ho found out about it instead. And why did the bartender call Yeon-Ah? Wouldn't the sensible thing be calling Mi Ryung's manager to pick her up as he is more physically able to support a drunken woman? And they stay in the same house. Man...drama logic....
Yoo Shin, i adore her...accept for the part where she's bitter and sarcastic towards Soon Shin. She's really adorbs but her character trajectory seems abit off. I was hoping she'd maintain her bickering relationship with her MIL.
And i really liked the OTP lip-service...i mean....fan-service. More please!

Good comment on why did the bartender call Yeon-Ah. Normally, what I've seen is that the worker will peek at the person's cell phone and call the latest number or perhaps one labeled "Mom", wife, husband, etc. I am guessing Yeon Ah's name is still under daughter -- but you would have thought there would be more and recent Soon Shins on the list also named daughter or whatever she would call her.

I find that IU's expressions are much more natural and animated as the series goes on.
That's the best thing about a weekend drama, it gives the actors time to become closer to each other, and it flows into their storylines.
On the other side of the coin, it makes us the Shin-Shin shippers... go nuts every time they are together. Yesterday, I even repeated the scene where he reached out for her hand. Oh man, I don't know if it's JJS or not but he even made that look so hot.

In the car/kiss scene, as Jun-ho is about to put the car in drive again after the kiss, did anyone else notice that from the driver side door angle, JH was smiling, yet from the SS side, his expression seemed serious/contemplative??
I'm sure it was the end of a long film day and they were both tired, but as a Shin-Shin and IU/JJS shipper, I was also wondering whether he was perhaps really affected by the kiss. I read somewhere that JJS can get totally immersed in his roles. Knowing how much I love this couple, I'm sure that's probably wishful thinking on my part. :o)
My love for JJS grows with each episode. I could easily pick him over Lee Seung Gi any day.

I agree with you that the possibility of real feelings of attraction between JJS and IU could very well have happened after spending so much time together in this drama as a couple but being the consummate professionals that they are, I am sure they would want to keep it under wraps for the duration of the drama... ;)
If they have really fallen for each other, I would be deliriously dancing with joy because I think they are so compatible and comfortable with each other that each time they come on screen together, I cannot help but wonder if they are REALLY acting or if they are doing it because there are real emotions involved. They look THAT good together!! ;)
And I totally agree with you about choosing JJS over Lee Seung Gi because I have said before that JJS has proven in the drama King 2 Hearts that he is much better looking and a way better actor. I only watched JJS in that drama because he was hands down the shining star in that drama, being a scene stealer every time he came on screen and when his character was killed off, I stopped watching it.
So glad now JJS is the male lead in this drama and if not because of him and IU, I would have given up on this drama waaaaay waaaay back.
This drama writer and PD need to give 90 degree bows of thanks and gratitude to JJS and IU for being the saving graces of a trainwreck of a drama.

@koreandramalover/kdl/kay
I'm at such a loss. Can't get my head around why this drama with all its excessive flaws in regard to content and character development, continues to have me in a stranglehold. It seriously has become like crack to me, because I can't seem to get enough of this wonderful couple. I adore both Soonshin and Junho's characters as separate entities, but together, they just do it for me. I am bewitched, beguiled and totally bewildered by my reaction. When I watch them interact, it almost feels like I have a hardline connection to every glance and touch...and all the various reactions I see on their faces -- surprise, delight, worry, despair... -- it's like I feel all of it like a light or heavy weight in my heart. And why??? I have no frigging clue...and least not one that makes sense to me. If you could explain it to me, please do.
Anyway, if I've learned anything during the last 42 episodes of YTBLSS, it's that I now have a pretty good barometer to use when trying to figure out the level or the depth of the chemistry between 2 leads (not sure whether this tool will actually be useful).
I've enjoyed reading your input on these threads. The logic mixed in with all the squeeing helps keep me grounded a bit, if even just a little. :o)

I am afraid I won’t be of much help because I am just as hooked with JJS and IU as SJH and LSS as you are!! Hehehe!! ;)
Thank you so much for expressing your feelings because I feel exactly the same way!! I cannot wrap my head around how emotionally-invested I am with the adorable OTP considering I do not know them personally and will probably never get to know them personally!! Hehehe... ;)
I cannot agree more with everything you said. I totally, absolutely agree with everything you said because it is as if you have read my mind! ;)
I have never felt this strongly about a drama OTP before and I think it could be because it is so rare to get a drama pairing that works SO well that EVERY TIME they are on screen together, I keep wondering if they are JUST acting or if they are acting out their emotions for REAL...hehehehe... ;)
I am so with you when you said that you felt every conceivable emotion the pair went through because I felt exactly the same way! Their every facial expression, body language, touch, voice intonation, smile, laughter, EVERYTHING just pull me in so badly!! Hahaha!!
What are we to do, Meahri? The way I see it, we should just enjoy every precious, wonderful, happy moment we get from watching the OTP. Why try to rationalise it when it makes us so giddy with happiness? We are giddy with happiness at seeing our OTP being so giddily happy together. It is something to be savoured, cherished and enjoyed. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Hehehe... ;)
And I completely agree with you that after this pairing, I would judge future OTP pairings using JJS and IU as the SJH/LSS OTP as the barometer.
And I agree with you that I am going into major withdrawal mode after this drama ends because I am so going to miss seeing JJS and IU together! Waaaaahhhh ;)
Thank you for your kind comment about my ranting and raving over here. I too have enjoyed reading your insightful inputs and squeeing as well. I couldn't agree more!! These two interacting with each other is just pure magic. *SQUEE* if IU/JJS were another actor/actress i don't think i would still feel as attached to the shin-shin couple as i do now.
My theory is- either IU and JJS click and connect well (albeit the 13 year age difference) because they feel attracted to each other, or...each of them has this ability to look shippable and have great chemistry with their counterparts. (JJS and Lee Yoon Ji on K2H; Milky couple on Dream High)

Those 2 are so adorable that I squeal when he even goes near her. JJS is such a convincing guy in love. IU or rather SS is also getting more animated and affectionate.

If the drama has any sense I would throw the grandmother and Yeon Ah to the dogs at ep 50 and be happy about it. Go live in your own little bitter world where only your opinion counts. I have a theory that one of the writers is a non, and is handling all of the mothers and mother writing on the show and the other one isn't and is handling the cute on the show.
(Non means a daughter/son of someone who is pathological.)
Since there are at least 2 writers I know of...
It would explain the Cluster B behavior on anyone called mother/enemy. (DSM-V) DSM-IV would be Axis II.

I wouldn't call Junho's dad normal and decent. Or Miryung's manager. Or Hyeshin's ex.
Junho's dad is a cruel and twisted person (inviting Chan Woo for his daughter's birthday, treating his wife like a skin disease, hanging out with Miryung after he's been accused of having an affair). His wife is obviously a nasty and bonkers person too, but he is no star husband or father. All he ever says to them is "Shut up", "I'm not interested", "I don't care about anything that relates to you"... I've never seen any indication that this couple 'liked' each other, they must have married for status and money or something.
Miryung's manager... a brainless parrot that worsens everything as he just adds fuel to the fire by always agreeing with Miryung without thinking. He hasn't tried to empathise with Soon Shin for one second, but just accuses her for making Miryung suffer.
Hyeshin's ex hasn't featured much, but from what we've seen he's a self-serving cheat and liar with bundles of arrogance, a scumbag to a T.
I'm not certain about Chicken Ahjumma's husband either. He is accepting of his daughter in law, but he doesn't seem quite upright – I wonder if he might not be the Dad or be more involved in that situation...

By comparison, there are fewer crazies among the men. Hye Shin's ex is weak and selfish, Mr. Manager is inept and that causes problems, and JH's dad can be downright rude and mean. But who is shown as worse or in a less rational light? Ex or harpy mother-in-law? Mean Dad or crazy wife? Manager or scheming actress?
Required fields are marked *
alua
July 29, 2013 at 8:44 AM
Yeah, there are fewer male crazies, but I wasn't challenging that –just that all the men in the drama are 'normal and decent'.
Some of the men I mention are also very minor characters – Miryung matters to the story, the manager is merely a plot device to keep things moving (he serves no other purpose) so of course the emphasis is going to be on her.
Hyeshin's ex was (physically) absent thus far, so I wouldn't compare him and his mother either – we might get to see as much of him now as we did of the mother in the early episodes.
Junho's dad is of course not irrational, I'm just questioning his decency, of which he has, in my book, zero. Whether he or his wife are worse, is a matter of opinion. To me, the wife is a gossip girl but was thus far quite harmless and inconsequential (the daughter was more problematic, although ultimately powerless – unlike Yeonah). I also find the husband's cruelty worse, because it involves a lot of powerplay, the kind that is all red signals for me (his behaviour is very controlling, the kind you'd see in domestic abuse. To the outside world he's a world-class dermatologist who is nice to everyone, at home he belittles the female family members in a way that reveals a much nastier other side).

Oh, I don't blame the wife at all. I blame the writer for using her so badly (kinda like her husband). As for the ex, he strikes me as a mama's boy and I believe his actions are partly motivated by his mother. That's why I used her as a comparison. She could have been ashamed of her son's actions but instead we get another pointlessly terrible mother-in-law.
Suffice to say, I am really disappointed the only characters worth liking are almost all male. I even wanted to like SS's niece and now... Disappointing. I am not claiming the male leads are perfect (or the friends or fathers or managers) but the writer's treatment of them has been noticeably different.
alua
July 29, 2013 at 11:56 AM
You're so write for blaming the writers.
I'm actually not even half as irritating by some of the characters as I should be, because I just look at them and think, "It's not them, it's the writer that's being an idiot and has no idea about creating characters that a) make sense b) are consistent in their portrayal.
Yooshin has been inconsistently developed. Woojoo had great potential, but has been stuck in her hissy fit stage for so long that it's not funny anymore. Grandma... the less said about her, the better. Yeonah has been in denial since about episode 2 or 3, when it was made clear that Junho just isn't into her and will never be (how can you keep a character that long in denial?) etc.
I think as some others have said (Kim Yoonmi I think), this writer must have some serious mother/woman issues to be depicting them as s/he has.

YA should have gotten the message wayyyy back that Junho isn't interested in her and let it go... what, around episode 5? 10, at the most?
I think it was only for about two episodes that Junho wasn't seeing SS but still nursing his pain and regretting his breakup with YA. But there hasn't been a moment in this drama where he was actually seriously showing any interest in her or in getting back with her – he was still hung up about the "past Yeonah", but never the present-day one that reappeared and suddenly deemed him worthy of her again.
Given that, it's absolutely perplexing that that the writers are STILL trying to spin this storyline which should have died about thirty episodes ago...
In dramas like Kim Sam Soon (though I hated the ex-storyline there too) at least the lead actually still has feelings for the ex but here there has never been a reason to couple JH and YA back up so that JH realises that he no longer loves her in that way.

I totally agree with your points!! Well done, alua!!! ;)
Which proves my point waaaaayyy back (in ep 30?) what I said about the writer - that he/she should win an award for the best CLINICALLY-INSANE drama writing EVER... ;(
WHY the writer has made the character YA go into such depths of delusional, psychotic, psychopathic, sociopathic and clinically-insane tendencies is beyond me...

Yup, you are right again! Shooting him/herself in the foot indeed! ;)
I've said before that if we were to list everything that is wrong with this writer's work (and there are too many to count), then we would just be ranting all day/week long, when all we really want to do is enjoy all the adorable SJH and IU moments in the drama... ;)
One thing's for sure. Despite the gazillion comments and feedback on-line on what is wrong with this drama and suggestions on how it can be salvaged have fallen on deaf ears (this drama's writer's and PD's ears).
In my humble opinion, the drama writer and PD could very well be as delusional, psychotic or crazy as the characters they create in YATBLSS, which is why they have insisted on continuing with their sham of a work.
When countless people are saying how bad their work is and how they should improve it, but they ignore everything and just be on their merry way, what does that say about how their minds work?
I see it all the time in my line of work as a criminal psychologist. And tragically, I am seeing it over here in a Korean drama, courtesy of this drama's writer and PD. And what is even more tragic, this trainwreck of a drama is not an isolated case. There are too many Korean dramas that are just like it. Don't the drama writers ever learn from their and others' mistakes?
This drama writer is in serious need of a mental health check of his/her capacity to write anything sane and logical before embarking on another drama-writing venture if this trainwreck of a drama is anything to go by.
Or...maybe I am just wasting my breath?
I rest my case.

I think every drama needs at least one Bad Person, what ruined this one is the overwhelming number of them. But even then I probably could have lived with it if they had any depth, but they are mostly all just one-dimensional props or robots set to scream at the appropriate moments. The characters really have not changed since ep1, with the possible exception of the oldest sister who finally got the guts to tell everyone including Grand Harpy to buzz off.

"Jun-ho’s mother decides to divorce, which I’m not sure isn’t half-bluff, but Dr. Shin feels he’s done nothing wrong and doesn’t blink an eye. Jun-ho believes his father’s answer that he’s not romantically involved, but his mother has made up her mind."
I'm still waiting for the subs, so I haven't watched anything yet... but I think Junho's parents would do well to divorce. From all the interactions between them that we've seen over the 42 episodes, there is no indication that they like each other or share anything except two children. Their marriage is everything a marriage should not be. Dr. Shin may not be cheating, but neither he nor the wife actually care for each other or have any respect for each other or are interested in what the other does / feels / thinks etc.
Not sure why Junho would want to try to change his father's mind, if takes one honest look at his parents' relationship, he should see that it's the sort of relationship you do not want to have. (The only reason to keep them together would be the 'sanctity of marriagehood', the belief that your parents are supposed to be together.)
That said, I doubt the drama will have them divorcing...

U are right in that Jun Ho's parents' marriage is empty at this point. They have nothing in common except 2 grown children (although the daughter is in question - still very childlike!)
The one other drama that I am watching is Scandal and in ep 10 - the mother advised the daughter to speak up on the 'eligible' husbands the dad is trotting out for her with this SAGE saying:
"Life is long, a wrong marriage is LONGER!"

You know, when this drama started, I knew Yeon-ah was going to be Soon-shin's rival, but I did not expect her to be as bad as she is. It's sad, disappointing, and just down-right pathetic. How is it possible for people to be so hateful towards someone who's never done anything to you personally? It's all imagined slights. If Yeon-ah were honest, the two people in this drama who have either intentionally or inadvertently hurt her are Jun-ho and Mi-ryung, respectively. Can she not see that? All Soon-shin has done is be herself with Jun-ho, which is why he's fallen in love with her. She was a good student to Mi-ryung, idolizing her, until she found out their connection. Then, Soon-shin balked at any sort of connection, until her family started acting like douches, and now, she's even starting to enjoy (maybe?) Mi-ryung's company. This is not Soon-shin's fault. So, Yeon-ah, GET OVER IT! For the love of God, get over it! All this petty revenge on someone who has not attacked her (metaphorically) in any way, is just ridiculous. Maybe it's this, out of the rest of an otherwise abhorrent plot, that I hate the most.
The only upside to all this crapshoot of a plot, is the Jun-ho/Soon-shin scenes. They are so darn cute together, I just love them to pieces. I just love all the couple-y things they're doing now.
I like this new format. It makes me feel uplifted and hopeful for the future of the drama, rather than downtrodden and discouraged.
Thanks for the weecap, JB!

Yeonah, sadly, is just a typical second lead. All the writer has done is connect the points of the 'jealous ex character' trope – meaning she's written with the subtlety and insight of a sledgehammer.

LOL -- I would use the term heavy-handed, but your analogy works as well! I think we all agree, that the best love triangle makes it difficult for you to choose which person the guy/girl gets - for some reason this seems more likely when its 2 guys after one girl, but not always as likely with 2 girls after one guy, instead you get the obvious backstabbing one versus the nice one -- I guess the writer(s) wrote themselves into a corner.

You're absolutely right. In K-dramas, the best love triangles often involve one girl and two guys. When it's the opposite, usually one of the girls is backstabby. Which I don't get. And I think I've seen some Western shows where this has happened as well. It annoys me. Really badly. I wonder if there's a reason, why the one guy, two girls scenario is often like this.

I think you are right - aside from being way too long, the series also has way too many 2nd through 11th leads. With the barely competent writing, nearly all of them end up being just space-fillers that croak or squeal or grunt on cue and then go back to sleep.
I don't really blame the actors/actresses in this, they are just following what the writer and director gave them.

Hello everyone and thanks to javabeans for the awesome weekcaps.
I'm kinda new here... well not really, I've been lurking in the shadows for a while. I'm "coming out" for YTBLSS , I'm kind of obsessed with the show... not really the show but for our otp. I dunno why but from JH's first tripping and dragging SS , I fell in love with this couple.
Even though I was disappointed with the so called plot and all the annoying angst following the birth secret I stuck with it just for our Shin-shin couple.
Really liked this week's episodes even though like a lot of you I'm watching the show in fast-forward mode!
These past weeks were so good romance-wise but I fear for the angst to come. As much as I like the main couple, I hate Yeon-ah, I feel like I haven't hated a second lead girl in such a long time...
Hope MR will be brave enough not to give in to YA's blackmail... but should I even dare to hope given her personality? ( she did change a bit ? didn't she?)
Did I say that I'm totally in love with JJS? His hands, his voice, his awesome facial expressions... can't get enough of him. He made JH such a lovable character !

Welcome, Irislorely.
Hmmm, I wonder about MR.
She was certainly keen on matching up JH and YA previously, so if she goes for breaking up JH and SS now, her character would show zero development. I do think they have been trying to show her as slowly changing (I still don't find her redeemable and I still think SS would be better off keeping a distance from MR, but that's another matter), so if they go for a breakup but still a redemption arch with SS, then I think these writers understand nothing of storytelling and character development, both because we've already had her trying to manipulate JH's love life and because there are only 8 episodes left, which in this slow-developing 50 ep drama isn't enough to force a break up / regretting what she did / doing something to redeem herself to SS / being forgiven and living happily ever after with her daughter.

For some reason I keep fruitlessly hoping that the writers will wake up and realize that the focus of this drama is wrong. I mean the cute stuff is really good and the romance is really good. I'm even interested in the more complex view of what happens behind set--between managers, actors, directors, etc.
But then somewhere in the first 2 minutes of the episode my cognitive dissonance kicks in and I start thinking it's really cute, I mean if I just skip ahead 10 minutes...
*sighs* I don't like bashing dramas, I'm the type to hang on so hard on the belief that it will turn around sometime... because there are aspects I like so much. >.<;;

LOLed @"I think I’ll start with lowlights today, since a litany of the episodes flaws is basically the same thing as a plot outline." Sad, but true!
I also LOLed at how the chicken restaurant's walls and doors no longer say just "Chicken" (which I always saw as their taunting the proprietors), and now say "Mexicana Chicken". It's obviously PPL, but I still find it funny.
I sure hope Woo Joo learns to stop and smell the Bread Man goodness soon so we can enjoy what should be a very touching relationship. And Hye Shin had better grow a spine stat and start being worthy of his love. But the truth is, as long as JJS and IU continue to do their thang, I'll find something to delight in.

Yeon Ah is displaying very strange psychotic behavior. She's very self absorbed and delusional.Jun Ho has moved on from their relationship, but she can't accept it even after she dumped him first.
She's a toxic character who likes to ruin people's happiness. She befriends Jun Ho's mom, but wrecks her marriage with unfounded gossip. She gets into Mi Ryung's life and calls her Mom, but blackmails her to keep her secret about Soon Shin's dad's accident if she helps break up Jun Ho and Soon Shin's romance. While filming, YA badmouths Soon Shin, pushes her, and lies to the press that she has been dating Jun Ho.
I just don't get it...Why doesn't Jun Ho speak up and tell the world that he's not dating that witch? Everyone at work is starting to badmouth Soon Shin as stealing Yeon Ah's boyfriend. Also, why doesn't Jun Ho tell his mother to mind her own business. He's a grown man and should be able to date whoever he wishes.Don't know why Jun Ho's mom is so set on a divorce. She hasn't got enough evidence of an illicit affair. Shouldn't they try to save their marriage and go to a marriage counselor?
Woo Joo should get a spanking for being such a smart mouth to her mom.She is such a disrespectful brat.

"she can’t accept it even after she dumped him first"
I never understand that, but it happens in SO MANY DRAMAS. From Kim Sam Soon to Coffee Prince to One Thousand Kisses to... the list is endless. And, for yet another reason I don't understand, in some of those dramas the ex manages to win the guy back – usually only for a limited amount of time (KSS, OTK), but in others for real (Coffee Prince).
I never saw Yeonah as truly befriending JH's mom – that befriending was already done with selfish motivations (getting closer to JH).
I'm on the fence about JH not speaking up... I think to a certain extent he's just being polite (not wanting to embarrass Yeonah in front of a large group of people, despite the fact that she's doing exactly that to him), and, to another, it seems like he just can't be bothered to waste any time or energy on the whole issue because a) celebrities will always have rumours swirling about them and it would be a neverending task to squash them all and b) the truth is going to come out anyhow. It's not like YA will be able to keep that lie going forever – because people will see JH with SS, and then ask them if they are in a relationship, to which both will say "yes" and if anyone asks about YA, JH will say he isn't in a relationship with her. Meaning people will just start looking at YA like the batshit crazy delusional woman that she is (in fact, I can't understand why it's taking people to so long to pick up on that fact! She's scheming on so many different levels I'd expect things to go wrong and out her sooner rather than later).
I think JH sort of told his mom to mind her own business, just in his (too) polite manner. Maybe it's just his gentle character, because both with Yeonah and Junho's mom I would have laughed straight in their faces and just told them that what they are saying is totally ridiculous and walked off.
Woo Jo is way beyond rude. And since this isn't a one off (everyone flips once in a while), I have to conclude that both her mom and dad are pretty crap at parenting.

About the ex getting the guy: It wasn't this bad in coffee prince and KSS. I recently rewatched CP and I thought I didn't hate the second lead girl at all. What I mean is even if she dumped him, she wasn't the bitchy kind and it made me want to root for that couple. Her character had more depth... And in KSS I too hated the ex getting back with HB... but atleast it had a justifiable reason...And even that justifiable reason was not enough to hold his attraction to KSS. ( Plus I liked that KSS had a spine) That is... conflict and that worked. ( Both the second leads were not bitches) Sadly, this angle is decently handled in only a few dramas.Namaly, the above two. Its a bad stereotype that has become pretty boring for me.

I'm so allergic to this ex trope that I hated the exes in KSS and CP too.
I just think what they did was unjustifiable – you don't vanish into thin air for years and then come back, with full expectations that your ex will just take you back in as if only a day had gone by. It's too cruel and too arrogant. And in Coffee Prince... she dumped him for another guy, didn't she? I don't remember if it was cheating or just dumping him after she found someone better, but again, to me that's just inacceptable behaviour. It's just that whole presumptuous attitude of "I have got rights" (over the guy they dumped / cheated on / mistreated) that gets to me...
Those second leads weren't evil schemers like Yeonah is... well, the KSS one somewhat was, because she did work hard to pull the pity card, which is manipulative. KSS was being too tolerant IMO – being fine with letting the guy accompany the ex to the US? And then spend a few months roaming around the country? No, no, no.
The ex in One Thousand Kisses was very much the Yeonah type – scheming excessively, even getting others to support her in the scheming, nearly marrying the guy until she finally saw that she had turned him from a human being with a happy, beating heart into a fish dead three times over (although I was never convinced by her finally giving him up in the end).
Anyhow, as you can tell, "ex that think they have rights" are my least-liked K-drama trope.

I agree with most of what you say. In CP, yes the girl did all that. But that could happen right? I'm not justifying her behaviour about her dumping him for another guy.. But she scored points from me for not being clingy(to either guys), scheming or manipulative. The guy CHOSE to be with her even after she betrayed him. That is why I said the second lead thing was played out well in CP.
And about KSS, I only remembered the part where it surfaces about she having cancer and hence opting to leave him ( Not that it justifies it. But still...) I remember now that you mention it about him leaving to US. It seemed pretty unreal to me then too. It was too unbelievable that HB(who she knew was in love with KSS) had to go and be with her (after he dumped her) using the pitycard. Hence I kindof didn't connect with it. ( I hate it when at the end, the male/female lead goes abroad for a certain period (another stereotype!) and the other person has to wait. WTF! After all the shemozzle....!!) And for that reason I tend to brush up endings and not really think through them.. LOL. But compared to just brushing off second leads as mere plot devices atleast these two dramas showed them in a different light. I agree this failed in MNIKSS towards the end.
This apart I'm no shipper of this either and I can do without screaming exes... or crazed second leads..
But unfortunately the graduation scale in kdramas seems to first be a second lead and then move on above to lead roles (MCW played a second lead in shining inheritanace and I kept thinking why does a beautiful girl like him keep clinging to that guy and does all this nasty stuff? ( SH was my first makjang. LOL)) And hence we will continue to have these stereotypes. :(

July 30, 2013 at 10:48 AM
Yeah, you are right, what happens in CP can and does happen (it just makes me roll my eyes). And both in CP and KSS it was written in such a way that could see how those twists would serve some purpose (character development), which isn't what's happening in this drama (Yeonah wouldn't be stuck on a relationship that was rejected more than 30 episodes ago already).
I never get how the exes seem to be convinced that their often truly evil deeds are somehow going to make them attractive to the guy...
Yeah, I hate going off for a few years thing too. Why would you put your life on hold like that?
I want my second leads like Doyeon in I Hear Your Voice or the love rival in You're the Boss who tries so hard and fails so badly and knows it. Sadly, refreshing second leads like that are few and far between...

Yep. All the folks on the Soompi forum watched the kiss in slow mo numerous times (like over and over and over and over again....). In the slowmo version, you can tell that IU's lips part ever so slightly, and on top of that, JSS' lips did too (and if you watch really closely, he actually puckered up a little). Anyway, those details all worked together to make that loud "smooch" sound you heard.
If the quick 'surprise' kiss had been acted as written, JSS should have responded (or not rather) much like Park Shin Hye does in all her dramas, where her lips don't move at all. I thought it was awesome that he actually kinda kissed back. :o)

I have watched the slow-mo autograph kiss countless times and I still cannot say for sure if JJS/SJH kissed IU/LSS back. ;)
I think because IU placed both her hands on JJS's cheeks to plant the awesome kiss on JSS's lips, JJS could not help but pucker up his lips when IU's lips touched his.

I'm pretty sure we can rule out Dr. Shin, Junho's father as Soonshin's father. In episode 39 (or it could be 38), when Dr. Shin is fishing and Miryung runs into him, Dr. Shin was sharing bits about his past with her (pre family)...tidbits that she would have known if they had actually shared a past. Most of their conversations have been like that, which I think is one of the primary reasons why they get along so well now...that, and they actually communicate with each other, which is something mama Shin and papa Shin have had trouble doing.

If I had to hedge my bets, I'd put some money on it being MR's manager, who has been trying, albeit not very efficiently, to smooth the relationship between LSS and MR ever since he found out LSS was MR's daughter.

The kind of ending that's so ridiculous that you forget about them until you watch the next episode the following week with the same scene and you're like "oh, right, immature bitch was being bitchy". The kind that doesn't make you hold your breath but makes you yawn, or makes you put the kettle on and comes back later, or even makes you want to fastforward until something (cute?! :D) actually happens in the episode.

Why is choi Yun Ah, always the wrong person in the right places and the right time to over hear every secret? She has every opportunity hurt Soon Shin because of jealousy. At first I tolerated her because that is what second leads do, but this is getting ridiculous. I can't stand that innocent look on her face while she is the one that brought the hell that is being unleashed all because she wants to be in the spotlight over Soon Shin.

Am I going to be heart broken? Will there be a happy ending?
