Teenage relationships and romance for upcoming Drama Specials
by javabeans
KBS’s anthology drama series Drama Special has announced two new installments, and have both cast rising pretty boy actors as their respective leads. So let’s take a look at Rainy Nara and Adolescence Medley.
Yoo Min-kyu has snagged his first leading TV role with his Drama Special installment titled Rainy Nara. He’s had a few supporting roles in the past two years, most recently in To the Beautiful You but perhaps much more fondly recalled as Casanova bassist Ha-jin in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band.
In the episode, Yoo Min-kyu plays a high schooler who loses his father, and both consoles and is consoled by a high school teacher named Nara who lost her husband on the same day. The Drama Special purports to be a delicate and sensitive portrayal of human emotion, which I can see working with the format and premise. (Drama Specials are particularly good at delving into the little moments of truth in real-life situations and emotional beats.)
The second project is a bit longer at four episodes (most Drama Specials are one-offs, though sometimes they can be as long as eight episodes, as with White Christmas) and is called Adolescence Medley. It stars Kwak Dong-yeon, a 16-year-old actor who first gained some exposure with the popular weekend series You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, with Lee Se-young (I Miss You) as his co-star.
Kwak Dong-yeon plays a teenager who’s a perpetual transfer student all through middle and high school, thanks to his father’s frequent work reassignments. The series is based off a popular webtoon of the same name, and the webtoon writer will be writing the show as well. It’ll be directed by PD Kim Sung-yoon of Dream High and Big, and while any mention of the latter tends to spur knee-jerk reactions, I remind myself that Big was beautiful to look at and was flawed mostly in the writing department.
Kwak Dong-yeon’s character is in the same class as Lee Se-young (though the actress is actually five years older) and in the teaser scene pictured below he whispers, “It’s a secret” as he gives her a forehead kiss. Pretty smooth moves for a teenaged transfer kid. Looks like this one will be a sweet, sentimental look at adolescent romance, which could make for a refreshing watch. This one will be 100% pre-produced—which, at 4 episodes long, is less of a concern than with full-length drama series. But not a bad thing in any case.
Adolescence Medley begins its run on July 10. Rainy Nara will air after it in August.

I'm crossing my fingers that Lee Se Young will get to headline weekday dramas in a couple of years. She's a good actress and is quite the beauty.

She was very young and adorable in Jewel In The Palace. I think she was Dae Jang' childhood friend.

Goody. Favourite genre (high school set stories!), actors I don't mind seeing more of (Yoo Min-kyu) or that I'm happy to discover (Kwak Dong-yeon), and pre-produced – I'll definitely be checking them out.

I'm more interested in the 4 ep drama then the shorter one. Simply because I'm craving sweet romance over melo right now. Hopefully someone will sub them.

I thought Kwak Dong Yeon was pretty good in You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly-- just thinking about his character in that makes me chuckle. Both specials sound like they're worth checking out.

I just finished Adolescence Medley. I enjoyed it a lot. It is on the KBS YouTube channel with English subs. It is a very nice teenage, growing up type story.

I watched it about 2 month ago. I thought DB doesn't mention this drama, but I found this post on google. Hahahaha.
Adolescence Medley has a simple story but it's so good on delivering. The romance, comedy and friendship is just simply perfect for me. I laughed and smiled so much.
I can't forget Jong-woo's line echo 'Lets date - narang sagi-ja'. Even now I still remember how Jong-woo react when Ah-young said yes. That's so awkwardly surpsrise. Honestly I don't now Kwak Dong-yeon before but watching this drama makes me adore him. Everytime Kwak Dong-yeon express his nerves on that drama, he's both funny and adorable.
It's a drama about a coward boy who doesn't want to be seen as a coward. So funny.
