New set of posters and stills for Good Doctor

Posters are out for Good Doctor with just a week left till its premiere, and they’re both pretty and a little boring. It’s just that I have yet to see medical dramas produce posters that are the least bit unique, since they’re always doing the same old thing of doctor staff lineups in ORs or ERs or other types of Rs.

I suppose the one above is the more interesting one, since it shows something more than “Thar be doctors in this drama.” We know there’ll be a relationship budding between series stars Joo-won (the awkward savant surgeon) and Moon Chae-won (the smart pediatric surgeon he works with), but it’s the how that interests me. If they can pull off that romance without reducing Joo-won to a caricature of autism, I think it has a shot. ‘Cause they really are cute together.

The poster below is about as typical as they get, except for maybe the part where there’s a random fashion designer stuck in the mix. Okay okay, Kim Min-seo was only a fashion designer in her old drama Baby Faced Beauty, but she’s styled exactly the same in this show as she was in that one and she sure sticks out. (She plays a hospital board exec.) I guess we should just be grateful her mullet-ed days are behind her. Joo Sang-wook completes the main love square as Kim Min-seo’s fiancé and Moon Chae-won’s suitor. I’m hoping not at the same time.

Good Doctor premieres next Monday, August 5, in Shark’s just-wrapped time slot on KBS.

Ha the second poster so reminds of Emergency Room xD (god I loved that series!)

I have a soft spot for doctor related stuff so I am really looking forward to this one :)

Let's just hope that this will be a better drama with Joo Won in it because his last one... well ... let's just not talk about it^^

maybe will be the first and last medical drama ever for me. because I'm fear with blood, medical stuffs and that operation scenes LOL.

whatever it is. anticipate. :)

I have to agree... the treatment of the subject matter: Autism seems like it's only gets worse...

I saw another trailer for this show and I felt even more apprehensive. Granted, I don't have a lot of experience with autism, but it felt off... really, really off...

Someone who has more experience probably could exactly nail it.

You have brought up something that's recurring in this drama's commentary. My question is : How will you like autism to be portrayed?

Autism is a wide spectrum. One autistic person can look nothing like another. If you do not have much experience with autism or have only come across one or two in person, there are many Youtube videos on autism. Granted, we cannot believe in 100% authenticity of these videos but at least it's a start. From what I have seen so far, there are some featured who speak and behave like everyone else. I wouldn't know they are autistic except that they say they are. Then there are those are so obvious in their severe autistic behaviors.

I guess we will see many comments like "I know autism, it's not like this." or "This is not how autism should be portrayed." My question to all these is "Have you see it all?"

It will be presumptuous to say the drama got it right or Joo Won the wonder boy can do no wrong. All I am saying is before we judge, widen our field of what autism looks like.

For me, the jury is still out on these.

I'd like it to pass the Bechdel test version of autism and portray autism in a way that is realistic.

Experience means, I know about it and how it ranges, etc, and I've studied and known people with it, but that's not the same as dealing with it every day or seeing someone who has it every day.

In another words, alarm bells are going off in my head that the portrayal is wrong, and maybe I did read something that is making it go off, but I'm not quite able to pin it. Having an intuitive impulse doesn't mean I'm not educated and I'm wrong.

So far, they are aiming for him as a savant, but what about the other people on the spectrum? What about other autistic people shown, period? Is he really going to be the ONLY one? The super special exception?

Plus some lines from the second trailer and the tone used makes me cringe. Such as the patronizing tone, "I expect perfection from my doctors. I don't care if you're autistic or not." (Not only is it a bad piece of dialog overall, and cut from the actual show, rather than a made trailer, but somehow it's making this out to be ALL about autism, which checks my prejudice box as in, making one black person in a white town all about racism.)

I could go on, but I think deferring is wiser. I really, really feel on edge especially after seeing one good portrayal and then a crapload of bad portrayals. (Also Korea isn't that great with dealing with prejudice overall...)

I don't know which trailer u watched and it stated "i don't care you are autistic or not".He only say PSH can't make mistakes and he won't tolerate. A typical warning from senior doctors because they are dealing with lives. but my simple suggestion for u is don't watch if you are not conviced.

Me too, my first medical drama.... though I did watch The 3rd Ward but I only got as far as 8 eps. And I did want to watch Golden Time but I always forget.

lol I understand when some actors get all this hype and when I finally watch them it's like... why?
but trust me Joo won's hype is earned, in Baker King I didn't really think much of him even though I did kinda like Ma joon (his character)
THEN he did Ojakgyo Brothers and was the smartest thing he could have picked, a weekend drama gives viewers time to endear and get to know an actor and how well he does at his craft. And the drama for as long as it was, it was just REALLY good!
THEN THEN he did Gaksital, forget it I was sold. He really immersed himself in the role and the tears I shed during that drama was more than (49 Days and 1 litre of tears combined) sooo GOOD!!
I didn't really watch Level Seven Civil Servant cause I don't really like Choi Kang Hee, but people still stuck with it for Joo Won's sake lol.
All this during a 3yr period, he has not stopped working since 2011 with his dramas and 1N2D, seriously so much respect and admiration for him.
Sorry for the long reply, I'm a Joo won fan, no shame V-V

The so called Joo Won hype might be from Gaksital, but that phenomenon of a drama was a class apart from the rest. And to be fair, it was as much a Park ki Woong show as it was a Joo Won one.

We, the loyal Joowoners have seen him go from one character to another effortlessly. I would suggest you marathon Baker King and watch all the Joo Won/UEE cuts of Ojakgyo brothers on YT and THEN watch Gaksital to appreciate him as as an actor.

Coz one drama might make you fall in love with the character, but it takes many dramas to fall in love with the man behind the character.

haha loyal Joowoners!! Yes we have a name :D..I might just take your advice and watch baker king before this show starts and parts of Ojakgyo brothers.

agree with you Athena, I watch joo won first in Baker king I thought he act good with diffficult charracter, but there's question in my mind, is it because i like the charracter so i say he's good???? , then I watch Ojakgyo brother, he act really different than in baker king so i though i'm not wrong he's good then i watch Bridal Mask that make me become a fans of him.
When he act in Level 7 i'm little bit worry because it's really different with hisself that quite n shy, many actor who act in seriouse drama look's strange when act in light n fun drama but joo won is really good even when he have to act comedic

Woooowwwww! i love the last part..."it takes many dramas to fall in love with the man behind the character" I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!

As for those with hesitation, might as well not tune in if in the beginning you already have biases... I am a Joo won fan and I think for most of us...it is the admiration of how he preps himself for a role...as young as he is, he has shown great dedication to his craft...so let us give this actor a chance, okay...

I feel like Kim Min-seo looks her best with her hair pulled back and no fussy bits around her face (see: SKKS, Geisha Assassin episode). This styling is a disservice to her, though it could be intentional if one doesn't want a second lead to look too good.

I'm gonna turn in this drama for all the leads. It seems like the director did a very good job in casting. While all 4 actors/actresses are equally good at acting, I feel like each of them gives out an unique aura of personality. Also, next time, can somebody offer Kim Min-seo the lead, please? I feel like she has been the 2nd female lead of dramaland since forever.

(... Why did I open the link. heh. I dont want to remember that drama, why do you have to put the link JB :-) :-). WHY. He he. Well its not only Kim Min-seo with the mullet hairstyle, Choi Kang-hee too. Bad bad styling, bad bad writing. Ugh....)

I like Moon Chae-won.

Hope this is a good drama. I don't usually watch medical dramas, but I may watch this one.

Well considering he's only done 7th Level Civil Servant since Gaksital I don't think it's a big deal he hasn't had a "really big hit" I mean...7th Level started off okay (even if I don't like noona dramas and think the pairing was wrong) but the storyline killed it.

I'm hoping that this will be much better. I like both actors and find it age appropriate (yes, I have a problem with the plethora of noona dramas out there...it's borderline cringe for me and makes me turn away from dramas even when I like BOTH actor and actress).

If anyone could answer this for me:

In the recent years I've noticed that K-dramaland has always given the second female a short (sometimes, bob) hair cut! Its like they don't deserve to be as pretty & feminine as the leading lady with long hair. I'm soooo tired of seeing the ugly short hair because all second leads look the same!

Rant end.

I can't wait to see JW!

Required fields are marked *

Actually, I think in a lot of dramas it is the exact opposite. Mainly the main girl is the one looking a lot less feminine (sometimes with ridiculous haircuts) while the second lead wears all the nice clothes and makeup. I have always hated that because it was like saying that the beautiful and successful are evil. I guess the recent bob cuts in female leads are in an effort to make them look sharper (more evil) in comparison to the lead girls who have to seem innocent. I swear in Kdramas you can tell the character of the person from the way the dress and the way their hair is styled lol.

I agree, many of the female characters have short hair for NO reason for whatsoever, especially the action dramas where the female is working for the police/government agency--they always have short hair. You can have hair LONGER than a bob and still be a badass! Just tie it into a ponytail.

I am watching this for Moon Chae Won, though I don't get why people are so turned off from the story even before it has started. We need to give it a chance. And Moon Chae Won is good at picking her projects, and the cast seems very confident about this drama's script, so I am sure everything will turn out well.

As for this drama I'm still unsure about watching it. I'm both interested to see how they play off Joo Woon's character, and I know some medical drama's can be interesting. However I've never felt complied to watch this, nor have I ever really had a "must watch!" feel for any medical dramas.

Ahhh! Yes!! I thought I was the only one who cringed at the lady in yellow plopping her hand right in the sterile field... This is why I can't watch medical dramas :(. And that gentleman in the short coat doesn't quite seem like a medical student ... Unless it's some kind of korean hospital thing, I don't care if it's a suit jacket, you don't wear short white coats unless you are in training (ie. a student)! Argh!

0

Required fields are marked *

being in the medical field, we all wear crocs in the OR. in my country only medical students wear long white coats. as for short white coats, a number of doctors (usually the older senior ones - registrar, consultant and prof) wear it to look more professional. kind of like a personal preference.

based on all korean medical dramas previously, it does seem like doctors wear long white coats as well.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

That's interesting! I didn't realize that some countries have doctors in short white coats. Where I am, students are in the short coats to differentiate them from those who have completed their medical degree. Seriously, we can't wait to get out of that short coat, plus the pocket sizes suck. So it's hard for me to associate a respected senior consulting doctor or professor with wearing a short coat. Huh!

0

@mysterious double
Haha the short coats on the snr docs here are more like nice structured blazers, like the one above. The long white coats which students wear are thinner and not so professional looking.

if you're not in the medical field you don't understand how life saving Crocs are LOL i used to be like that too until I was doing 12 hour shifts in my pretty little ballet flats and my feet were dying...~needless to say...they have some great new designs instead of the usual ones that don't even look like crocs lol

I literally just finished my first day as a shadowing doctor... and officially start next week - just in time for some Joo Won goodness ♡ I really hope they do the autism slant well (as unrealistic as it is in reality since drs are meant to have good people skills). Anyway, if the loveline develops anywhere as well as it did in the movie 'Adam' (starring Hugh Dancy, who plays someone with Aspergers), then this show'll be a keeper. I can live with some bad drama-medicine, though if they actually make it accurate and interesting (like in jdrama Code Blue), I can pretend I'm studying (Bonus!!).
Regardless, I'll be tuning in to see one of my favourite actors (and actress - really liked MCW in Princess' man) play one of my dream jobs. Getting excited for next week!!

Apologies to Dramabeans and GirlFriday about this.

Hello all, am giving you all the full translated synopsis from the KBS site. Credit to anaisanais from the Pediatron [email protected].

As a veteran volunteer and unbiased channel manager on Viki, my only concern is in obtaining the most accurate and best subs for a drama, regardless of any individual of the cast.

I've banned myself from the soompi site in order not to involve myself in fandom comments. It's hard work enough as it is to get a team much less get the medical terms right. Trying to be helpful and getting translations for characters there seems to be have cause the fandom to wander across to viki and set me up- and mistrust within the team members.

Here is the plot synopsis everyone; in spoilers.
The world of pediatric surgical doctors who struggle by themselves for the children's future and for the families' happiness.

A lot of people do not know the fact that pediatric surgery exists independently.
However, pediatric surgery has existed all along and is quietly going about its way.
Surgery on ball-pen sized premature babies with extremely low birth weight, surgery on fetuses inside moms’ bellies, etc.
Phenomenal medical techniques we know not of are being achieved in pediatric surgery.
Good Doctor is a work that deals with the world of pediatric surgical doctors who are saving lives out of a keen sense of duty and that deals with their anguish and sufferings.
In addition, it plans to show unerringly the irrational medical insurance system, as well as pediatric surgery’s reality that cannot help but be inadequate because of hospital management that seeks only profit.
Also, through the actions of doctors who assume responsibility for children’s futures since the treatments are not simple, Good Doctor will ask again what it is that adults should really do for children.
The children of the pediatric surgical ward are all our children, nephews and nieces, and younger siblings.
Through drama, Good Doctor wishes for these children’s recovery and future as well as a healthy world.

To look with a sense of kinship and identification, not eyes of sympathy and pity for disabled people.

There are some viewers who are ill at ease with disabled people appearing not in documentaries but in dramas.
And such viewers want stylish or pretty main characters to be featured.
“Feeling ill at ease” is, in dramas, to look at disabled people only as objects of pity and sympathy.
Then, are disabled people incapable of beauty and subjects of discomfort?
Are they simply the objects of pity and sympathy?
Among disabilities, there is none that has incurred the general public’s prejudice and popular misconception as much as autism has.
When we say “autism,” the movie Marathon’s Cho Won and his way of speaking, shaky hand gestures, low intelligence, social maladjustment, and incurable disease are the stereotypical characteristics that ordinary people recollect.
However, although too great a variety in symptoms and patterns exists and there are differences between cases, autism is a disability that can be treated.
After treatment, it is possible [ for people with autism] to participate as members of society.
Prejudices and misconceptions about disabilities are the chief factors behind branding these people as disabled.
Such stigma is not understanding, but rather hardens into a vague sympathy and pity.
Good Doctor seeks to show us that disabled people and normal people are both entities that have the same feelings and dreams and that it is a beautiful existence that can resonate for us.
Through this, Good Doctor seeks to say that what’s necessary for these people is not sympathy or pity but a sense of kinship and identification as well as recognition as members of society.

So when I write the viki synopsis you'll understand why Park Shi On is the focus for this drama.

Peace out. So sorry about this DB and GF. But there is no avenue out there to post these now that viki has stopped givings us posts to do this. And I am NOT going into soompi GD thread to share after this incidence.

If you haven't then please give it a try.It was an excellent medical-human-drama that dealt with rare diseases.I can't say how much accurate it was in terms of technicality but I definitely felt it was a drama that couldn't be written without some proper research.Since Good Doctor is from the same writer, I think we can hope that it won't be completely devoid of reality of autism.

As someone who has known many autistic people and savants, there doesn't seem to be anything misportrayed in this drama. (This is just judging by the teasers) One of the things about autism is that it appears in many different ways. Some autistic people are very high-functioning and can live relatively normally in society, some aren't able to function in society at all and need to stay in group homes. There are so many different types and levels of autism. Also, if people found his freak out in one of the teasers weird I can explain that too. A lot of autistic people are very sensitive to sound and can't tune out noises the way most people can. Therefore, being in public can be quite overwhelming. I know this one from experience because when I was little I showed some symptoms of autism and being sensitive to sound was one of them.

Just for everyone's info the character description for Park Shi On states that he has level 3 autism. It looks like the writers have done some homework.

Also I guess it also depends on how Joo Won depicts the character.

Am not claiming to have much experience with autistic children but certainly meet enough adults with autism as part of the medical history. Plus have been speaking to some paediatricians. It's a really complicated subject and everyone's personal experiences vs what the writers write vs the actors' potrayal... against how the Koreans perceive it? That's enough to make me look forward to just another medical drama.

The posters look awkward, except the first one. It's naturally cute! But, don't judge a drama by its posters! I Hear Your Voice has proven it wrong.

For now I'm torn between "This is going to be a total killer!" and "This is going to be a disaster". Because, really, I don't know how everything will turn out to be, it can be very natural or very absurd. I think, with this drama, the one wrong step=everything's ruined rule applies. It's very risky.

Only Joowon's acting (because his character is supposed to be what makes GD interesting) and solid script can save this drama. (I don't think the other actors' acting needed to be pointed out because we all know they're damn good)

It’s just that I have yet to see medical dramas produce posters that are the least bit unique -
you contradict your past self JB

(LOL!)

I'll have to wait and judge from reaction that people have before diving in...

I'll tune in for Joo Won, but I get a bad feeling about this. I'm worried he chose this for the role, rather than choosing it for the whole drama. Kid's on a roll, so I'd hate to see a few poor role choices hamper him. Really hoping this is good!
