Lee Byung-heon and Jeon Do-yeon reunite in action revenge sageuk
by girlfriday
It looks like we’ve got a pretty epic movie reunion on the way — Lee Byung-heon (Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King) is going from Joseon royalty to Goryeo warrior in the upcoming action sageuk Gallant Woman: Memory of the Sword, starring Jeon Do-yeon (Countdown) as the best sword-fighter in all of Goryeo. Badass. It’s been fourteen years since the pair of A-listers were in a project together (as lovers in 1999’s The Harmonium In My Memory), and this time they’ll meet as mortal enemies who fight to the death.
The new film comes from PD Park Heung-shik of Heaven’s Kids and the drama My Sweet Seoul, and Jeon Do-yeon has worked with him before in Mermaid and I Wish I Had a Wife. The Goryeo-era martial arts film starts out with Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Byung-heon as part of a trio of the best warriors in the country. But Lee Byung-heon betrays them, kills the third member, and sets out on an ambitious path to become king.
Jeon Do-yeon is left to pick up the pieces and disappears with the daughter of the friend who died. She takes on the role of mother and teacher, and raises the young girl to become a weapon of revenge. The daughter will be played by rising young actress Kim Go-eun (Eungyo), who’s just starting her career and already riding a wave of critical acclaim.
Eighteen years later, the mother and daughter pair will set out to enact their revenge, just as Lee Byung-heon is amassing the power to make a play for the throne. That’s a pretty great premise. Mommy-daughter sword-fighting duo, kicking ass and taking names? Yes please.
The film is planning on a 2014 release.

I can't wait for the movie to be released AND subbed. It really looks amazing.
I have known Lee Byung Hun since IRIS days but I have to say I was mind-blown when I watched Masquerade. He was just ... marvelous ! He played the two characters so well. Just by looking at his facial expressions, you knew who was the king and was the fake. Very amazing.

This sounds entertaining and along the lines of Wuxia so I'll check this one out.
Must admit, I flipped loyalties in Arrow and will not be surprised if LBH makes me care for his character even if he's horribly misguided.
Thanks GF for the movie news.

This sounds awesome!
Jeon Do-yeon is such a talented actress and Kim Go-eun really did impress me in Eungyo.
And it's always nice to see kickass ladies.
Also in this case daughter taking revenge sounds a bit like Lady snowblood/Shurayukihime.

This sounds so totally awesome, right up my alley. All three leads are such refined actors too, even Kim Go Eun whom I thought was phenomenal in Eungyo. Looking forward to this!

Correction honey, it's Goryeo Kill Bill, not Joseon.
And I hope I'm wrong, but is(/will???) the setting be placed around the same timeline as of "Age of Warriors" and "God of War"; meaning the Military Regime of Goryeo (Mushin Jeongkwon 무신정권 武臣政權)?
Without the whole guy is the father of my child and killing all the lackeys.
But please grant us the Goryeo-version of the yellow jumpsuit. XD

No disrespect for Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Byung-heon (they're both amazing actors) but I'd watching this for Kim Go-eun. I'm itching to watch project with Lee Min-ki already!

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am for this project! I have been a huge fan of Jeon Do-yeon since she starred opposite Han Suk-gyu in 1997's THE CONTACT (I was head over heels for Han Suk-gyu at the time; still am! :P ). When HARMONIUM IN MY MEMORY was released on DVD, I ended up watching it two or three times, then reviewed it for a Asian film website where I was one of four reviewers. I really loved how wonderful Jeon Do-yeon was as the spunky, jealous schoolgirl. I thought Lee
Byung-heon was cute, but I wasn't overwhelmed by him until he followed it up with one hit after another (JSA, ADDICTED, BUNGEE JUMPING OF THEIR OWN, and A BITTERSWEET LIFE). It's funny, because the guys I reviewed with didn't think as highly of Jeon Do-yeon as I did because they didn't find her as pretty as other Korean actresses, despite her talent. Idiots!
I can't wait to see her sword-wielding warrior woman kick some ass. :D What an amazing talent, a woman capable of believably portraying a whole range of characters, from an abused house servant to a bad-ass top swordfighter.

I love Lee BH and Jeon DY. I love Harmonica in my Memory. I'll watch anything these two are in. Ditto Bengbeng's wish for an international release.
Now if only they would reunite in a drama!

Such a talented cast, love them all. Glad its a Goryeo sageuk. Its more believable that women were wielding swords in that era. Almost every sageuk claimed to have the best sword fighter in the country lol. The latest, Gu Family Book was laughable.
Looking forward to this movie. Hope it'll show up at my theatre like "Gwanghae".
