Joo-won begins shoots for Good Doctor

Here’s our first peek at KBS’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday medical drama Good Doctor (sigh at the on-the-nose title they chose over Green Scalpel), starring Joo-won (Gaksital) as an autistic savant surgeon. Right now it just looks like Joo-won in a suit (where’s the lab coat and pocket protector?) but I’m a happy camper whenever he’s back in dramaland so I’ll take what I can get.
The new project from the writer of God’s Quiz and the PD of Ojakkyo Brothers is being called a “warm human drama” and stars Joo-won as an autistic savant who has a childlike personality and genius skill for surgery. In the stills he’s leaving his quiet hometown for the big university teaching hospital in Seoul where the drama will take place. Moon Chae-won (Nice Guy) plays a pediatric surgical fellow in the same program as Joo-won, described as a bold and outspoken character who will share a sweet loveline with the hero.
Joo Sang-wook (TEN) co-stars as an assistant professor who has a crush on Moon Chae-won, but is also engaged to Kim Min-seo (The Moon That Embraces the Sun), manager on the hospital’s planning board, and only daughter of the board’s director. Hm, sounds like a political marriage on his part, which would explain the wandering eye. And Kim Young-kwang (Birth Secret) plays a surgical resident who’s the first to befriend Joo-won, the outsider.
The subject matter doesn’t sound overly appealing, but it’s being set up as a heartwarming underdog tale, and it’s full of actors I like. And it would be nice to see Joo-won in something good again. Here’s hoping.
Good Doctor follows Shark and premieres August 5 on KBS.

I thought joo won is good actor that always pick good project that's why i like him . His drama choice is non typical drama with original story, i like he always choose meaningfull drama not only about love betwen man n woman, he also choose strong charracter not just standdart charracter. I like him n Kim Sung soo for acting n project choice

I generally like Korean Medical Dramas for the acting they showcase. I'm excited to see Joo Won back in a drama (only, I hope he doesn't exaggerate his portrayal of aspergers/autism...) I hope the writing is tight and has momentum!!
I love how in the pictures, Joo Won is clutching tightly to his bags. It already heightens his vulnerability and child-like figure <3

Joowon sure is working hard. There hasn't been time to even miss him from tv. Not that I have a problem with that but it's like he's in so many dramas in one year that I can't even differentiate them anymore.

Are we talking about the same actor?
Joo Won's dramas and roles are very different from one another. The problem is not in being unable to differentiate them but rather how shockingly different he is in each character. I think the problem these days is actors who keep taking on similar roles even if the dramas are far apart.

Agree. Any role he's taken on so far has been completely different from each other from cute and sweet to evil and badass and everything in between.
I think it's just there's never a break period long enough for us to think, wow, it's been a while.
The boy takes on a project every year since king of baking with the exception of this year being 2 projects. I admire his hardworking. He kind of reminds me of kim soo hyun and uhm tae woong in that they were always so hardworking and like to be working.

I wasn't talking about the characters he plays. I meant that he's in so many dramas back to back that it's like he never stopped making that one drama and it just continued with him playing a different character. Do you get what I mean? I don't mind it and I like him as an actor but I'm kind of tired seeing him in yet another drama only when he just finished one. Just stating my opinion.

usually i will be boring see some actor take one project to another in short time, but joo won is different for me because another actor play the same kind of charracter so i'm boring but joo won always really act as different charracter so i'm not boring even i'm impatient, i even watch the cut of his scene in drama really ofter which i never done it to another actor

you know it is odd that Joo Won, who looks totally 18 with his pouting, plays a surgeon (which takes 10 years of studying, so they can be at least 29-30), while Lee Min Ho plays a highschooler.... while he can totally pass for older than 27, as seen in Faith...

Oh nonononono.
I would definitely say no to this switch. I love JW with what he's doing. Even L7 is a flop, I still love his acting so much. He's lovely and adorable as Gil Ro.
I always consider JW as a real actor, please stay away from those kind of idol or flower boys drama. JW is the best for all those heavy or emotional roles. He acts by heart, not by technique or his pretty face.

yeah I guess considering the character is a savant (which is odd too though, cause most autistic people I personally know dont like to see blood!) but it gives a more serious and difficult nuance to the role.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of an autistic savant becoming a surgeon...This stretches the poetic license to the max!!! Personally, I would not want any kind of retardation in my doctor especially in a surgeon. Believe me I work with surgeons everyday as an O.R. nurse and some of them are just retards even on a normal day. It would be highly difficult to operate on a patient especially since autistic people tend to not be interactive with others.
I can't imagine how an autistic surgeon would be able to get through the necessary face to face interviews with patients in medical school and after to get a thorough physical exam and history before cutting them up? It boggles the mind....

This is such a gorgeous cast. There's no one that doesn't float my boat; they're all likeable.
They're going to have some good chemistry with each other i predict, but one can never guarantee chemistry.
Either way i'll be tuning in, and this will be my first medical k-drama. Hope it doesn't disappoint.

Since all dramas HAVE hospital scenes...I sort of feel like I have watched medical dramas, but I haven't.

I hope the medical stuff makes sense, because mostly when I watch shows with any medical stuff I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how someone can have terminal gallbladder cancer, and I'm like huh, can't you just yank that bad boy out and call it a day? I have to chalk it up to confused subs or go starkers.

I hope I am right since I don't watch this episode. But on research you would find that most Korean medical drama facts are viable options. Just a bit rare or exotic sometimes.

I fear that the Lee Min Ho's drama Heirs will steal the spotlight from this drama. I hope they don't go head-to-head. I want both dramas to be successful as Lee Min Ho was my first kdrama crush and Joo-won is my latest crush. :-)

LEE MINHO never be my crush but I have BOF, PERSONAL TASTE, CITY HUNTER and FAITH in my stock and I had watch all of them. (my little sister is a fan of him) so I have to keep that drama for her. well, most of his dramas are satisfying and good.
and JOO WON is definitely my crush ! and I love it when Moon Chaewon accept for pairing with JW in this drama. for sure I'll catch up with GOOD DOCTOR that'll be airing on August as well as HEIRS on OCTOBER. I think HEIRS will not steal the spotlight, but SBS's MASTER'S SUN might be.. since the main lead are very good in dramaland..

Yup...sometimes it's funny when someone said LMH drama will steal the spotlight..He just got lucky with BOF while his drama after that were all crap...Just looking at his old drama record was laughable..City Hunter was a good drama but his acting still disaster..If there are someone whose going to give a MAGIC to this drama.,It'll be Kim Eun Suk herself and may be the rising Kim Woo Bin..and Choi Jin Hyuk also stole alot of Korean viewers heart.It going to be them..
Good Doctor...If there anything hard for viewer to watch this drama.,it's only their genre.,Medical..Others was perfect...looking forward to this!

Yeah! This is the best news one can read after a long tiresome day! Every time I see Joo-wonie in a suit, I have to swoon and fan myself some fresh air! And his cute dreamy and dimply (does this word even exist:-)) smile in the third picture with those dimples......I´m suffering from a severe case of high blood sugar right now:-) I´m all in for the ride, as long as the story makes some kind of sense and the chemistry between the leads is unfolding nicely......for the rest I don´t expect to much! It´s just that I don´t wanna start a drama, thinking that I can spend part of my summer evenings gazing at Mr. Dimples and then in the end, having to drop it because of a bad plot......an absolute no go!!!!!!!!! Fingers crossed!!!!!

I am cautiously optimistic that this drama might bring some viewing happies. The cast seems good, none are by favorite people in drama land but I like them okay enough and with the writers resume, I am happy to give it a go. Wow, feels weird to say that, it's been a long time.

His character will be a challenge since one mistake can make him too annoying and too childish, he's autistic but also a surgeon genius!! Okay, I didn't bother watching Joo-won's last drama, so I haven't seen him since Gaksital - that's long enough to be apart, right? Lol. I loved Moon Chae-won in Nice Guy, so definitely going to give this drama a chance.

This looks like it could be really good. Certainly, the premise is intriguing. But I sure hope the writers don't indulge in that maddening K-drama practice of playing fast and loose with basic medical facts, insulting the intelligence of viewers with what's obviously shoddy medical research. Granted, I've never seen a medical K-drama, only medical portions of other dramas that left me shaking my fist at the screen in sheer consternation. Others, who have some history of medical drama viewing, might be able to better assess whether this one has a chance of being both good AND medically accurate. I like Joo Won as an actor, and definitely plan to tune in for the first couple of episodes at least, but I simply don't see why he's considered such a sexy drama idol. His cheek bones are a bit too defined for my taste, giving him the slightly disconcerting look of a ventriloquist's dummy when he smiles broadly. Sorry if I've pinched the feelings of Joo Won's most ardent fan girls. But, to each her own...

He was never consider as idol by his fans or himself. He climbed to the position he is now based on his acting.most of him fans love and support him because of his personality and realistic acting. :)

I see Joo Won very different from other artists. Besides interviews and some photo-shoots, he never goes abroad for a magazine-shooting. He even rarely goes to the events and promoting activities like other celebrities. I only see him working and working. I sometimes hope he can rest himself a little, but its his life-style and his choice. So I respect and will only support him.

IKR. He is a workaholic .But he work for him dream towards becoming a veteran actor,not much for popularity.I admire him for that.

Dont jugde me i watched all lee min ho's dramas but only watch baker king for joo won. I think jw is way better in acting. I have hope in moon chae won so im not scare of heirs at all. Let the competition begins.

Soooo EXCITED for this! Caps lock of the word EXCITED is not even enough! I love Moon Chae Won. I haven't watched any of Joo Won's projects yet but I'm so hyped that he'll be paired up with my most favorite young actress. I heard a lot about Joo Won so I'm crossing fingers that I'll love him too just as much I loved Song Joong Ki. and I love the fact that they're of the same age! No noona-dongsaeng, oppa-dongsaeng love line! Can't contain my feels.~~~

Actually Joo Won is younger to Moon Chae Won. He is Sep'87 and MCW is Nov'86. But it's cool, their age difference is not very visible. However, the actor Kim Young Kwang in the drama who is playing JW's friend is the age breaker. He is in Jan'87 which is closer to MCW and if it's fine by him, JW can call him his friend otherwise he needs to call him hyung.

Oh thanks for the info. I was actually not sure whether they were of the same age or what but at least they're of the same generation/age- range or something like that. I'm not sure what I'm talking about here. I hope you know what I mean. :) Yay for Won-Won couple!
