Kwon Sang-woo in talks to join Medical Top Team
by javabeans
Kwon Sang-woo is on the hunt for his next drama, and you can add Medical Top Team to the top of the list, as he has announced that he is considering taking the show and is currently in final talks. That sounds a lot closer to being confirmed than the last drama he was considering, period action series Age of Feeling, which makes me sad because that drama sounds cool but seems to be struggling to find a hero. It should just pull a Gaksital and cast a non-headliner in the lead, then be so great that he becomes a headliner because of it. C’mon, is that so hard? Now all you have to do is be awesome.
Ahem, but this post isn’t about that drama. Back to Medical Top Team, the new MBC medical show that has attached the PD of sageuk-romance mega-hit The Moon That Embraces the Sun, Kim Do-hoon. The very literal title is exactly what the show is about: a Dream Team comprising top geeeeenius doctors in various branches of medicine, telling stories of their struggles, ambitions, and daily lives being genius doctors. Yaaaawn. Oops, did I say that out loud?
But c’mon, Kwon Sang-woo, you’re killing me with your drama choices. I was all primed to be excited about that other one, but I’m just about medical-drama’d out. Unless the show is working a special angle, they tend to all bleed together in my mind. Kwon would be playing a smart, handsome, confident surgeon whose forthrightness gets him mistaken for a bad boy type, though he’s actually warm and kind and perfect, yaaawn. Oh I did it again, didn’t I?
The decision is not yet final, but it’s sounding like there’s a pretty good chance he’ll take it. The drama will be a Wednesday-Thursday show that will follow Two Weeks, which puts its premiere all the way in October.

Has anyone watched his last drama Queen of Ambition/Yawang? Was it any good? Or just another melo with unnecessary angst and evil people?

Rachel,
I love this, "Or just another melo with unnecessary angst and evil people?" which is a good description of many melodramas.
Thanks for the news, JB!

It was indeed the "another melo with unnecessary angst and evil people" end of spectrum. The heroine made many commenters on OT grab their pitchforks, she was really hateful.

Queen of Ambition. Yuck.
I watched to the end, mesmerized by my own inability to pull away. Most unbelievable drama ever. Second lead dropped out in the middle of series and Kwan Sang Wo's performance was just passable.

Don't bother. It was completely pointless except to give the main character a major comeuppance. Even Kwon Sang Woo indirectly admitted that the drama sucked.

i also heard he said something along the lines of not being too pleased about his role.
i agree it was definitly really bad, however, not the absolutly, hopelessly, doomed-from-the-start kind of bad.
somehow i felt that just looking at the script, the major developments on a macroscopic level, its an example of everything going wrong and characters seeming "evil" from an outside point of view, but with everyone making choices that are on some level logical for their respective situations. it could, mayyyybe have been decent with alot of tweaking.
and! it had a neat poster. not the level of the amazing recent sword and flowers one, but in the upper department, composition and color are really good.
hey, posters are important.
but yeah, dont watch it.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else. I could not stop watching it because Soo Ae was the awesome Frosty Evil woman. Her husband was so cute. I thought Kwon Sang Woo did a good job considering his role as constantly long-suffering revenge guy.

I heard it's terrible. My Korean friend who finished it was saying it would be such a disgrace if exported!

I really, REALLY wanted to watch another Soo Ae drama, but started laughing a few seconds into the opening scene of 'Yawang' and was annoying my wife with my guffaws a couple of minutes later. The only melo openings I've seen that packed more melo cliches were 'Flames of Ambition' ("My Stradiverias!") and 'Glass Mask' ("Take off those spike heels, you idiot!").

There must have been a good reason why Lee Jun-ki dropped Age of Feeling. I'm guessing Kwon is going to drop it too.
"... mistaken for a bad boy type, though he’s actually warm and kind and perfect, yaaawn. "
LOL double that from me.

That's what I'm thinking too. I suspect there are some problems on their end...?

I thought one of the reasonis because previouse drama with set in year '30 is really phenomenal (gaksital), there's not much drama describe that era so there will be comparation, it will be uncomfort for many actor, even the success of drama doesn't depend on the actor only

I have nothing against a good medical drama. It depends on the story, the writer(s). Heck, how many seasons of ER, Grey's Anatomy or House did I watch?
So I will try this, at least the few first episodes.
One thing I noticed: The actors who do Medical Dramas are often those who are losing steam in the popularity department. Or those who slowly enter ahjussi land... Not a question of talent, really and that's sad.

Hey I am all for a hot young doc.
Remember Song Joong Ki in Ob/gyn?
Anyhow... jeepers. I actually liked him a lot in Into the sun.
All of you can avoid medical dramas, I am on viki on back to back medical dramas. Am not sure whether I am happy or stressed.

Hehe... Ob/gyn is a good show. All the cast was great & it was a real "human" drama.

But he rejected what on the surface seems to be a much younger and more dynamic plot in Age of Feeling... I'm not sure I see this move as his hand being forced.

Yes, I totally agree; they should just pull a Gaksital on us again. I still can't get over how great that drama was. And not to mention that Joo-won got his big break there....would love to see someone pull that off for Age of Feeling :)

I totally second that, javabeans! I love Kwon Sang Woo. I think he is an absolutely amazing actor. BUT I cannot stand his choices in dramas. I was son excited to think that one of my fave actors might finally be doing a drama I want to watch and now this?! Argh! I have very little interest in medical dramas so again KSW may have to pass me by.

They call it Mega Hit because that drama got ratings in Korea of 40% or something like that, but in my opinion is a drama really overrated, it's not bad but it isn't great either, just OK. So maybe you could use your time in a better drama on the level of Gaksital jejejeje :)

I don't believe the rating of moon/sun is so high, with that kind of drama

Like it or not Moon/Sun was a national drama (42.2%). That's pretty damn high and very hard to attain these days, especially with a 20 eps drama.
