Jang Geun-seok cast as Pretty Man
by javabeans
Well, duh.
They could not have been more literal with the title if they tried: Jang Geun-seok, poster boy for the pretty-boy set in dramaland, is heading back to television with a show titled… wait for it… Pretty Man. Yes, really. It’s both entirely appropriate and a terrible title.
But don’t write it off, because writing it is Yoo Young-ah, the screenwriter of one of the biggest hits of the year (and also of all time), The Gift of Room 7. That movie earned not only top box office receipts but plenty of praise and viewer love for its heart-warming and sweet daddy-daughter comedy. Writer Yoo also scripted heart-tugging sports movie Korea (As One), so the talent isn’t lacking on the writing front.
Pretty Man is based on a manhwa of the same name, and features a main character named Dokko Mateh (Matte? Matei?) who possesses “the most beautiful face in the world.” The story unfolds as he goes off in search of both his lost family and true love, and somehow decides that said true love will be found among ten of the “top 1% women in the nation” (one wonders what criteria he uses). The subtitle in the image below reads: “To conquer ten women.” Uh.
Despite that thoroughly off-putting description, the project has got my interest, albeit mixed with some wariness. Jang Geun-seok can be fantastic when he’s on, but he’s not immune to bad projects. And manhwa adaptations have had mixed results, so there’s no guarantee there. Producing is Group 8, the company behind manhwa-turned-drama blockbuster hits like Goong and Boys Before Flowers. Sure, they’ve had a few misses (Playful Kiss, Birdie Buddy) but they seem a natural choice to be doing material like this.
Pretty Man is currently casting, and is aiming to broadcast in the latter half of this year.

I don't think he's looking for love - he's trying to seduce the women at the behest of some jaded ex-chaebol wife. The female lead is a plain Jane type who hankers after him and has low self esteem.
Yuck. This sounds utterly squalid and I for one will not be watching.

I love the writer's works, but she had strong actors in the movies she wrote, actors that could manage sparse scripts and evoke a lot of depth...but Jang Geun Seok a vulnerable, detailed actor? Umm, not really. Also, I really don't like ANY of Super 8's dramas. They cheesify everything. sighhh

The storyline not appealing. In fact, it is actually off putting because I wanted JGS to come up in a project showcasing his acting talent in a completely masculine character with his hair cut short. " Pretty" and the longish hair above seem to be an extension of his appearance in real life. Since, I really admire his achievements in life and truly believe him to be a talented actor .......this project is disappointing. For his sake, I hope there is more than meets the eye.

That project seems like a drama for little girls: Potential of cheese and saccharine is enormous. Also, a writer who made a buzz with a successful movie signed to remake this? Something's fishy (old debt or blackmailing, choose your scenario, lol).

JGS is a very good actor, he just needs a project that can bring out his full potential. Although love rain is not a good project, he was quite good in it.
I am not liking the general plot and the title. But the scriptwriter has a few good movies. I like her way of writing. I hope she will make changes to the original script.

I would say he is a versatile actor and a pretty good one for his age. His team just did not know how to select projects for him.
If you did not finish any of his dramas, then it is hard for you to judge his acting. Because when you watch the whole drama, then you can see how his character grows. I would say his weakest work is You are my pet, but that is because it was a stupid plot. Even kim ha neul was bad in it.
Overall, despite a lot of people hating him, his hair, his style, his choice of work, you can see that the general comment is most people think he is a decent and good actor for his age.
anyway, i really hope this project will turn out good. He is a good actor who deserve more recognition for his acting ability. I think an actor personal life should not affect people's perception of his acting ability.
Still i hope after this project, he can choose more serious roles and less manga works.

Just based on recent runaway success of Gift of Rm 7 , Lets hope Yoo Young Ah cast his top-grade fairy dust ( a truck load..maybe MORE) on JKS .
'You're beautiful' is both bane & boon for JKS.
It brought him crazy fame & fortune in Japan & other South East Asian regions but many other discriminate viewers, are getting tired of waiting for him to shed his flower boy persona. He's stayed in character long enough. So if he wants to be seen differently & have a hit , its only my opinion, that he needs to look & act totally different.
Well, an African leopard or an Arabian Leopard is still the same species.
SO 'real'-life pretty man to reel-life pretty man...is how different ?! BAH.
Com'on JKS , choose something else mindblowingly challenging & different. We know you can bring it !

Not that I am against any of it actually if he is actually gay but he is marketed as " the Asian price" towards female fans and I am certainly not buying it! I liked/ loved him in his initial projects but he has become queer in a not a very nice way... yay, they'll adapt a manwha by Chun Kye Young? Now I'm excited :D For JGS.. not so much. Oh, well.
I tried to read Beautiful Guys for years now because I loved most of her previous works, but there doesn't exist any English translation. So, at least, I might be able to get to watch it as a drama adaption. But then I wonder, whether the drama version will be as distinctively Chun Kye Young than her manhwas are. hmm..
Everyone who complains about the weirdness of the premise, it's supposed to weird. The manwha artist only writes weird stories full of weird characters. I hope they retain some of its weirdness for the drama adaption. :)

Although I am slightly worried about the storyline, I think that if manga was popular, the storyline should be good (and most stories of mangas look kind of weird until you start reading it)... It depends how they make it to screen. I wonder who they will choose as the man 10 women...

Unless the reviews are especially good, I'll pass on this one.
He does have acting potential, but this film sounds mostly terrible (catering to an audience who wants to see a pretty boy and nothing more) and more like another project to stroke his ego. You're My Pet was enough self-promotion and that was terrible (and that's an understatement). Honestly, at this point he'd have to do a serious-themed project that thoroughly challenges his acting skills, not one that serves to showcase his prettiness.
Plus, I can't buy the "most beautiful face in the world" part... I don't know if JGS has had any plastic surgery, but he looks different than he used to (I'm thinking the fresh-faced Do Re Mi Fa So La Di Do), too fake. (I feel mean saying that though but that's my gut reaction...)

I agree, he looks different from even his You're Beautiful days, and I wish he hadn't done it/had stopped there, because his face was perfection in that drama.
I still think he's an actor worth watching and am not really bothered by his offscreen image (perks of being an international fan, ha) but he needs to make better choices - I found him and Yoona quite watchable in Love Rain, but he can do better than playing endless variations on Hwang Taekyung for the rest of his career.

I seem to be the minority here. While I don't really care for his music, I don't have a problem with how he dresses or his hair or eyeliner. It's obviously he likes how he dresses and looks like, even if some consider it "girly". While I can't say I like the style or hair, it's how he wants to look. It's not obscene or indecent, so no problems with me if he's comfortable with it. I don't want to go around dictating how someone should look in their real life. And I find his "prince of asia" act to be just that, I take it as just an amusement act. He comes across as self critical and with lower self esteem than I originally thought in some interviews, so I take his act as just a way to hide it by doing the extreme opposite. Just my opinion, I don't take his act seriously, so it doesn't bother me.
The only problem I have is how he picks his parts recently - He's a good actor, even in crap like Mary and Love Rain (though I liked the first half of Love Rain), but he was playing pretty much the same scowling character - he should try a different kind of role to stretch himself. I'm not sure about this role here...

I don't mind his style (OK, sometimes! lol, there are some things that he has worn which I've just shook my head at, lol). It's just I don't think the "prince of asia" act is an act anymore, lol. It may have started out that way for fans, but now I think there is a part of him that is really that way and it has a lot to do with the roles he keeps taking. I assume as an actor, he'll pick the roles he's most attracted to/can relate to--and they've all been the same type for a while. I'm sure he is still a sweet guy, but I miss the guy who would stretch himself more in his field with his characters. I feel like now he has this image and he is trying to keep that image.

I think I agree with the gist of the comments -- pretty much that Jang Geun Suk has sorta fallen off as an actor. Like, whatever I fell in love with him for is barely there anymore, it seems. I miss the Jang Geun Suk who starred in The Happy Life starting a band with ahjussi's. Now, it seems like all his characters just have to be a pretty-boy type with an ego and he has also become that type, himself.
I am still a fan, though I feel it's only a matter of time before I don't care much anymore. I hope this show will have more heart than it is letting on. I will remain optimistic about it since it does sound interesting. And please change that tag-line...o.O

Love Rain and Marry Me Mary left much to be desired, and don't even get me started on You're My Pet. So the last good thing I've seen him in was You're Beautiful... It's about time he's cast in a show that could showcase his acting chops. Here's to hoping this is it...

This drama will be a hit for sure and salute to JKS for trying out roles that many others would be afraid to challenge - a young Korean male eel fan has made this comment on live radio program just the other day and that resonates many how eels feel.. Zikzin!!!
How many actors will keep their hair long to play the role of rocker in MMM and how many would take the trouble to keep a mushroom hair style and gain weight for role in 70s and few months later shave his hair short and slim down for a modern look in Love Rain.. how many actors would slim down and put on eyeliner to play the role of a lead singer in idol group in YAB.. all these roles are challenging styles if an actors want to look the normal way in normal roles..

It seems that the look was not just for the characters he played in the drama since he has continued to stay in the same mould in the real life too. I wish he would get rid of his long hair and darkened eyes so that one can totally see the character being enacted rather than the actor, JGS. I believe him to be a good actor and a person and it actually saddens to see him less than what he can be. Hope to see him with a completely new look from the past 4 years since YB days.

eels get to know of his real life through many interviews and documentary.. in fact, we always trust the project he has chosen.. as reported by media, he got many offers after Love Rain but he took a while to pick on the project and the role he wants to play in.. many actors couldn't play this role because they can't bend to change their usual image presented to audience.. I know some did try but fail and some are afraid of their image being affected.
Here is one KBS documentary to know more about JKS as it is created by JKS following him for 3 months to film his life as artiste.

Please don't get me wrong. Although not an Eel, I see many things in him to admire. I have seen the documentary before and also read all his interviews. He surprised me with how mature he is when talking about various matters and his approach to life. He is a remarkably creative person, an innovator, an intelligent person, a very good human being, son and a friend. He sincerely cares about people. He has exceptional mental and physical strength that has made him achieve so much at such a young age that many don't in their lifetime. I do not question JGS, the person. I like him.
( all this really does not stop me from disliking his long hair and kohl eyes. I know its his personal choice but I don't have to like it)
I just wish to see him act a totally different role than what we have been seeing him in. I also really don't like what I read about this particular drama and the character that he will be playing. He is a much better actor than what this role will be challenging him with.
I am sorry to disagree with you as regards to there not being other actors who can play such roles. Good actors can do so based on their own interpretations and strengths. Do you think it could be that they may simply find other projects more up their sleeves instead of them being afraid of their image
I like JGS enough to wish him well in this project and to hope that we will see a different side to him that shows how good he can be

In fact many don't watch the TV dramas via TV... so it doesn't contribute to the number for the TV rating in Korea...On the other hand, many high rating TV dramas in Korea are not doing well overseas. so most smart viewers don't blindly look at the TV rating in Korea as they may only refer to a small number in the survey compared with the huge number of viewers in other channels.

I miss the old JGS, the one when he looks normal and his movie and drama projects were a great choice. I don't know if I should blame YB (cozI love YB so much) but he went downhill from there.
I'm crossing my fingers that this drama will turn out for the best.

I used to be a big fan before he went to...who knows where-dom with his choice of projects. I can't say this drama gives me any hope that he is back to honing his craft. If anything, he is still milking his popularity in Japan and hoping that maybe he still has people who like him in Korea. I really want him to get back to taking acting seriously because he does have talent. Playful Kiss, BOF, and Goong were crack dramas when they aired. I will probably tune in since I do like my fluff dramas. Maybe this drama will make me like him again since I have been getting turned off more and more.

JKS, unpredictable as he is, is ready again for another drama, finally!
oh well, I noticed that every project in which JKS is in, receives either a rant or rave reactions..and he's the only actor who receives that. So either you just love him or just hate him. That's it.
But there's definitely no question on his acting ability (which I observe surpasses other actors who doesn't receive outrageous comments the moment their names are on the cast of characters). And it's also not his problem, the way he dresses, since we dress according to our comfortability. kkk. the problem in that case, is in the eyes of the beholder.
And I agree, he's the actor who's just not afraid to accept such kind of roles, and that's what you call a real actor.
In short, gonna wait for this new role. For sure, he can pull it off. :)
