Gu Family Book: Episode 17

The romance takes a big swing upward, because there’s nothing like a brush with death and mayhem to make you cut through the crap and tell a girl how you feel. Kang-chi’s family drama gets more complicated—and more interesting—when Wol-ryung starts to show signs of vulnerability, in more ways than one.
EPISODE 17 RECAP
As we parade through the highlight reel of Kang-chi’s Moments of Stupidity when it comes to Yeo-wool—and she asks if Chung-jo is the most important person in his life—he narrates: “Why couldn’t I say anything then? Why couldn’t I tell you in that moment? The truth is… the truth is, Yeo-wool-ah…”
Back to where we left off last week, when Kang-chi finds out that Yeo-wool has gone missing. He assumes it’s Wol-ryung’s doing, but when we catch up to her, it’s two henchmen dressed in black who carry Yeo-wool through the woods.
Kang-chi tells Master Dam and Teacher Gong the truth about Wol-ryung. You’d think Master Dam would be a little more surprised that the gumiho he killed isn’t so much dead, but maybe he needs a moment. He asks why Kang-chi kept this to himself all this time.
He hangs his head, and Teacher Gong guesses that he still wanted to protect his father in some small way. Kang-chi takes off his bracelet and looks up with his green eyes to promise that he’ll bring Yeo-wool back here safely, or he won’t return.
When Yeo-wool gets brought to a clearing in the woods, it’s Jo Gwan-woong’s trusty sidekick who steps out. He asks if she’s Dam Pyung-joon’s daughter, and then we see that it was her father stepping in repeatedly that drove Jo Gwan-woong over the edge.
He rails at his minion to kill the thing Dam Pyung-joon holds most dear, to teach him that he can’t mess with Jo Gwan-woong. The minion now orders his men to cut Yeo-wool’s head off, and take it back to the martial arts school, and leave her body in the woods to be eaten by animals.
Three assassins come at her with swords, but even blindfolded and hands tied, Yeo-wool fights them off for a while. But they overtake her eventually and one raises his sword to strike… and then we hear a squelch noise offscreen, and he falls to the ground, dead. It seems wrong, but I’m happy and horrified at the same time.
The other two go down the same way, and then the mystery rescuer, also dressed in black, unties Yeo-wool. It’s Wol-ryung. Whew. Wait, is this worse, or better? I can’t decide.
Head Minion is the one who’s really scared, because he recognizes Wol-ryung immediately. He tells his men not to engage, and they start to run… only when they turn around he’s standing in their path. More offscreen squelching noises! I just have that image ingrained in my head, from that one time he ripped a guy’s heart out of his chest. Remember that?
Anyway, it gives Yeo-wool her chance to flee, and she runs for her life. Kang-chi is running as fast as his gumiho baby legs can go, and they both run run run towards each other. Er, hopefully it’s towards each other…
But it’s Wol-ryung who catches up to her first, and he asks with a hint of disbelief: “Are you running away from me?” She tells him to get away, but he tells her that if he makes up his mind, she’ll never be able to get away from him. Said the creepy stalker.
She backs away in fear, and then suddenly Wol-ryung can feel Kang-chi coming nearer. He shows up growling, and Wol-ryung quickly grabs Yeo-wool by the throat. Aw man, I was so close to feeling bad that you’d be misunderstood as the kidnapper, but now you’re just the second kidnapper of the evening.
Kang-chi growls at him to get away from Yeo-wool, but Wol-ryung tells him that there’s only one way to save her—give up on his quest to become human. She whirls around to look at Wol-ryung, and he stops for a casual side note: “Oh, did I not tell you who I am? I’m Kang-chi’s father.”
Kang-chi starts to waver, but it’s Yeo-wool who shouts, “No, Kang-chi! You can’t give up!” Wol-ryung spins her around to face him, and she cries at him not to bother Kang-chi anymore because he’s had plenty of pain his whole life without him adding to it. Are you telling off his deadbeat dad?
“If you’re really his father, then don’t cause him any more pain!” It moves him for a split second, but he gets ready to attack anyway. Kang-chi attacks first and they fight, but he’s no match for Dad, who hardly breaks a sweat while beating Kang-chi to a limping bloody mess.
Wol-ryung says he’ll never win, and turns to walk towards Yeo-wool. But Kang-chi gathers all his strength to stand between them, and tells Wol-ryung not to go near her. Wol-ryung hits him, but he stands up and says it again. He hits again, and Kang-chi, now bleeding AND crying, says it again.
Wol-ryung raises his hand one more time, and Kang-chi cries, “Yeo-wool is my person!” Omo. His hand stops in mid-air.
Kang-chi: “Don’t lay a hand on my person!” Wol-ryung hears his own voice echoing those same words, and suddenly he’s flooded with memories of Seo-hwa. He stands there stunned, watching Kang-chi cry and plead the exact same way he did when Seo-hwa was ripped from his arms.
His eyes start to well up with tears, and then suddenly a familiar blue light starts to circle around him. A tear falls as he looks over at Kang-chi, surrounded by blue lights, still guarding Yeo-wool.
He slowly lowers his hand, and at the same time, a huge gust of wind blows through. Kang-chi turns around to hold Yeo-wool, and as Wol-ryung watches them, we fade to black, and he’s gone. Did he… disappear?
Kang-chi clasps Yeo-wool’s face in his hands and says through tears, “I thought I lost you. I was so scared.” She hugs him, and then we hear him finish his thought from the opening narration in voiceover: “The truth is, Yeo-wool-ah, you are the one who’s most precious to me. Without you, I have no meaning.”
And then he pulls her in for a kiss. Whooo!
See, even the blue lights are happy when you kiss her. They swirl around and then when Kang-chi pulls away, his eyes are back to normal.
And THEN, you guys, she goes in for more kisses. I knew I loved her.
So-jung heads down to his library and finds Wol-ryung crouched on the floor, bleeding. He asks why he’s not healing, and Wol-ryung says he doesn’t have the power to heal anymore—all he has is hate and anger and death.
He says almost to himself, “When was it? I said those words once. I don’t remember why, or because of whom.” He muses that once he loses all fragments of his memories, he really will become nothing but a demon. “I wanted to die before then.”
He says with a tear that Kang-chi is the only one who can kill him, and murmurs, “If I could just die and go to where Seo-hwa is…” Awwww.
What he doesn’t know of course is that Seo-hwa is still alive and currently making an offer to buy something from Jo Gwan-woong. He asks what, and her assistant ushers in Tae-seo. She wants to buy Tae-seo?
She tells Jo Gwan-woong that she plans to restore the Hundred Year Inn to working order since he ran it into the ground, which only doubles his annoyance. He reminds her that the inn is his, but she in turn reminds him that he bought it with her money. Ooh. Interesting.
Jo Gwan-woong fumes and pulls the curtain back, and she quickly turns her face away. He warns her that threatening him is a bad idea, and she just says the same to him. He asks after his favorite minion, who just now wakes up in the woods, bloodied but alive.
Kang-chi and Yeo-wool report to Dad and Gon, and they don’t reveal that Wol-ryung was there, and she says she doesn’t know who kidnapped her, since she was blindfolded. She asks Dad to lift her house arrest, arguing that if she’d had her sword on her last night, it wouldn’t have gone that far.
But Kang-chi pipes up that he disagrees, and Dad should keep her locked away, because the girl doesn’t listen. WHAT. Does kissing make you stupid if you’re a gumiho? It would explain a lot.
They start to bicker right then and there, leaving Dad and Gon totally confused, and then storm out in a huff. They stand outside glaring at each other, and then suddenly Yeo-wool breaks into a huge grin: “It seemed real, right?” Ha.
Kang-chi beams, “It seemed totally real!” They giggle at each other, and then start to get self-conscious staring at each other’s lips.
But then Gon comes out, so it’s back to their bickering show. Flashback to last night, as they walk home holding hands. Yeo-wool asks Kang-chi to act like they’re fighting, at least until Dad lets her out of the house and gives her back her sword.
She adds that they should keep the encounter with Wol-ryung a secret for now, which he doesn’t understand, but she thinks to herself: “I’m sorry, I can’t tell you yet—that the person who made your father that way was my father.”
Kang-chi smiles to himself in the kitchen, and Teacher Gong sneaks up behind him to ask if he’s thinking about a girl. He stammers that he was NOT at all thinking about Yeo-wool. “Who said anything about Yeo-wool?” Ha.
Teacher is still weak from Wol-ryung’s attack, and Kang-chi apologizes because he feels responsible. Teacher Gong tells him not to burden himself with things that aren’t his fault, and asks what he plans to do next. “Now that you can control your beast half, aren’t you going to look for the Gu Family Book?” Oh, that. Right.
Jo Gwan-woong gets offered twice the cost of a regular servant for Tae-seo, but he just snarls that he won’t even accept ten times the normal cost. Seo-hwa’s assistant warns Jo Gwan-woong not to lose sight of the bigger picture over a matter so small—doesn’t he want the southern province? Servant Choi overhears the conversation and relays it to Tae-seo, who realizes that Jo Gwan-woong has bigger aspirations than just selling state secrets—he’s planning on selling off the country.
Kang-chi joins in on sword-fighting class today, much to Gon’s annoyance. He orders Kang-chi to run off and look for the Gu Family Book, but Kang-chi says there’s something more urgent he has to do first (thinking of his fight with Wol-ryung), and he has to become stronger to do it.
He asks about the other two masters because he wants to hurry up and learn stuff, but Gon refuses to tell him who they are. Kang-chi: “I don’t think you know!” He still finds it hard to believe that Gon is one of them.
They start getting into a pissing contest, which is always a good time. Gon: “Wanna die?” Kang-chi: “I don’t really die, so…”
But before it comes to blows, Tae-seo arrives for a visit and Kang-chi lights up to see him. Tae-seo reports what he found out, and Master Dam plans a reconnaissance mission at the inn to dig around.
Gon comes by to tell Yeo-wool, who pouts about being left out. Her teacher becomes hilariously shy when she sees Gon, and he just looks at her strangely as she smiles. She announces that Tae-seo is here to see her.
Yeo-wool goes out to see him and says brightly that he’ll do well on his mission. She’s still miffed about not being able to join in on the spying, but he says he wouldn’t want her to. She sighs, all Not you too. “Is it because I’m a woman?”
Tae-seo: “Because you are my betrothed.” That’s not the answer she expected. He says he knows it was her father’s one-sided wish, and that he’s still not good enough, but he says that it may have been her father’s way of giving him a moral duty—something to live and fight for. Aw, how’s a girl to reject you when you say she’s the reason you’re fighting?
Kang-chi watches them with a long face, and when he turns around, he runs right into Gon doing the same thing. Ha. Like a rake gag, but sadder, and with puppies.
As Kang-chi brushes past him, Gon says, “It’s just to there—that’s how close you can get to Yeo-wool. It’s best not to go any closer.” Why does that break my heart? It’s clearly spoken from experience, too.
Kang-chi doesn’t turn around and just keeps the ruse going that it doesn’t concern him. Didn’t he see them fighting earlier? Gon asks if he seems like enough of an idiot to fall for an act like that.
He warns Kang-chi that he and Yeo-wool will both be left with nothing but scars, so it’s better to give up now. Kang-chi: “Give up before starting? Don’t you know that Yeo-wool hates that the most? I’m never going to do anything that Yeo-wool doesn’t like.” I’m gonna hold you to that, buddy. No letting her go for her own good in the eleventh hour!
He broods alone in the kitchen, mindlessly sweeping the floor with a broom, when Yeo-wool sneaks by to pout that they’re all going on a super secret mission and leaving the two of them out.
Kang-chi just asks what Tae-seo said without looking at her, and she asks, “Are you…jealous?” He gets all flustered with the denials, naturally, but she just says, “Isn’t jealousy for someone who can’t have something?” Cute.
He says he honestly doesn’t know. “I’ve never in my whole life had something of my own. I’ve belonged to other people, but I’ve never had a person who was mine.” He finishes the thought in his own head: “So I don’t know what I should do. Can I really have these feelings for you?”
Yeo-wool tells him he’s not the only one—it’s the first time she’s ever felt this way too. “So, what do you want to do tonight?” Kang-chi’s mind goes straight to the gutter: “Huh? Tonight?”
Yeo-wool: *blink blink* “What are you imagining?! The reconnaissance mission!” He laughs sheepishly. And then he fondles his broom. No really! I don’t make this stuff up!
So while Kang-chi spies on Gon, Yeo-wool asks her teacher to take her into town, or be tied up again. Heh. Teacher chooses to take her into town and tries to teach her about different fabrics, which Yeo-wool finds about as exciting as watching snails crawl.
She knocks the vendor’s table over for a quick distraction and scurries off. She peels off her dress, already prepared with her spy outfit on underneath. She’s about to go when Chung-jo, who spotted her in the marketplace, stops her.
Yeo-wool greets her with a big smile, and Chung-jo notes that she seems happy, and that Kang-chi has a way of making people feel that way. But then she adds that the thing about Kang-chi is, once he gives his heart to someone, it’s absolute. She says if she calls him to her now, Kang-chi wouldn’t be able to turn her down.
Aw, Chung-jo, why? I can see her saying something like that in a jealous outburst, but I really hope this isn’t the only place we’re going with her character. Yeo-wool asks what she means, and Chung-jo just lets her wonder, leaving her feeling nervous.
Meanwhile, Kang-chi heads into town, and Gon discovers their not-so-sneaky plan.
Soo-ryun comes to the inn and offers to throw a party here to make up for the last one, and Jo Gwan-woong agrees, but says he has a request.
Seo-hwa asks her assistant about his search for the monk So-jung, but he still hasn’t found him, and he assures her that they’ll find her son. Ah, so she IS looking for Kang-chi, and her interest in Tae-seo must be purely because of the inn and Jo Gwan-woong, not realizing how closely Kang-chi is tied to that family.
Soo-ryun arrives with her gisaengs in tow and exchanges a furtive glance with Tae-seo. One of Seo-hwa’s men keeps watching Tae-seo closely, but so far he just seems to be keeping tabs on him.
Kang-chi and Yeo-wool get ready to sneak in, when Gon finds them. They’re all prepared with arguments about how Kang-chi knows the place like the back of his hand, and basically they just aren’t going to take no for an answer. They’re so cute when they’re ganging up on Gon. Team mission it is.
At the party, Jo Gwan-woong asks the veiled mystery lady to show her face, and offers to sell Tae-seo to her in exchange.
Kang-chi starts poking around, and suddenly a group of men stop him to ask something in Japanese. It turns out they dressed as ninjas for the mission to purposely blend in with Seo-hwa’s men, but it also requires Kang-chi to pass as one of them now.
He just repeats the one phrase Yeo-wool taught him, and manages to blend in with the group that’s gathered for the secret meeting. There, the leader asks if they completed their mission, and a few of them present pieces of a map.
Suddenly one man speaks up to say that there’s a spy here, because they only have twenty men, but there are twenty-one standing in here right now. Whoops. The leader orders them to un-mask, which leaves Kang-chi looking mighty guilty.
He turns around, slips his bracelet off, and faces them with green eyes. Next thing we know, he’s walking out with a room full of injured ninjas in his wake. He tucks the maps into his shirt and starts running.
At the party, Seo-hwa agrees to take off her hat, and Soo-ryun watches warily. But when she unveils, it’s a decoy, and Seo-hwa’s sitting in her dark room, smiling.
Kang-chi slips into a dark room to avoid being seen, but it’s not empty… He’s walked right into his mother’s room.
Seo-hwa lights a candle and comes closer to Kang-chi with a knife in her hand. She asks (in Japanese), “Who are you?”
He turns around slowly to face her.
COMMENTS
The first half of the episode was much stronger than the rest, given that the other conflicts don’t really hold a candle to Wol-ryung vs. Kang-chi. I don’t really care about Jo Gwan-woong, so the setting of the pieces for the next battle was just more of the same, plotwise. I’m glad Seo-hwa is starting to DO something, because I’ve had enough of her hat shenanigans, and I’d like to know what she wants. At least we know she’s looking for Kang-chi, though if she’s actively been searching for twenty years, she ought to look into better minions.
I love that Wol-ryung is starting to show signs of humanity, or what tiny fragments are left. This was a good use of the repeated setup, like father like son, which works twofold to make us appreciate the happy version of the love story (because we know how badly it turned out the first time), and also to get through to Wol-ryung and remind him that he once felt the same way. The idea that his former self is just a hazy memory and that he’s holding on until the hate completely consumes him is a great place to be with his character, and it gives us hope that there’s something to recover in him. That moment in the forest was great, when Kang-chi’s fear and love and desperation made him see himself in his son.
Now that Kang-chi and Yeo-wool have confirmed their feelings, the love square is rearing its ugly head, which feels a little late. Or maybe I just dislike it when this couple’s main obstacle is anything other than their own foot-in-mouth disease (because that’s cute) or life-threatening path-altering stuff, like gumihos becoming human, or demon fathers back from the dead. At least Tae-seo is part and parcel of Master Dam’s plan to marry her off, which is a conflict that I like for her because Yeo-wool has a chance to assert herself as a woman who makes her own choices.
But I really wish they’d let Chung-jo move on, because I like her, and I don’t want to dislike her because she hangs on and starts meddling in their relationship. Her still being in love with Kang-chi, or saying harsh things to him to push him away while secretly pining for him—that’s all great. But turning her into a convenient meddlesome second lead is just wasting her character, which makes me sad. Good thing Gumiho Baby Smoochies are an instant pick-me-up.

The kisses are great! Actually WOW, didn't expect the 'FOREST KISS' to be that intensed.
The OTP is so cute! Love all their scenes togather.
I love KC (+YW) moments with Gon and GongDa master, too.
But sweetness is short-term in K-drama, heartbreak is expected next week after seeing the preview.

I totally agree about the forest kiss. If I'd had bangs when I started watching, I wouldn't have after that scene, because the heat from that kiss would've scorched 'em right off! ;D KC and YW are great together, period.

This is kind of going backward but when I was re-watching some episodes I noticed that in episode 12 when Yeo Wool told Kang Chi that she wants to do whatever she can for him because that's where her heart is, that is the same thing Wol Ryung told Seo Hwa and now with Kang Chi saying the same things about Yeo Wool that his father said about his mother, about her being his woman, I absolutely love the symmetry. These two couples parallel each other in many ways. Let's just hope the ending isn't the same for both couples. My heart already broke from Wol Ryung and Seo Hwa's story, I don't think I could handle it if Kang Chi and Yeo Wool ended up the same way.

I loved what you said here. I don't think however that KC and YW story will end like WR and SH. I have a feeling that KC and YW will have a Happily Ever After. The question, (and what has me curious), is how they will get there. I am also curious as to which character will die or go to jail or have an incurable disease (GW, GW, GW and his minions) and who will be alive till the end, doing what and living where.

Right? Seriously! I don't even want him to die. I want him to suffer (slowly) UNTIL he dies. An incurable and painful disease, WHILE he is in jail AND destitute seems to me like a good option, :-).

Great minds think alike they say, and well... We must be great minds because we are thinking alike. I got done watching ep. 18, and man, I hope, I really hope JGW has it coming to him. I like the disease thing because then no one would have his death on their conscience, because they didn't create the disease. "Long, slow and painful death" sounds really good to me. And yes, the comeuppance should be because of what he did to both families of KC.

this is my favorite episode so far, not just for the kiss that was perfect and lovely, but everything is moving forward now....finally. I also loved Wol Ryung's character so much more now. So super interesting!!!

Agreed! I love that they are moving forward again. It felt like several episodes, actually.
I am also glad where they are taking Wol-Ryung's story. It fits perfectly and was **extremely** appreciated. It is no small feat to have the cahones to write such strong story arcs and NOT back down from them, but to actually "go there" and explore deep relationships and the depths of different types of love. I am SOOO happy with the writers! Thank you, guys! You did it!
I also like that Wol-Ryung appears to care for Kang Chi and that he is not yet "completely" a demon, ... yet. It leaves some hope for him- which keeps me interested. Overall, WR's story is so far **Perfect.** (Writing, directing, music and of course the Acting!) And the fight with its depth and execution was absolutely AWESOME. Tears! Tears!
And the Seo Hwa storyline is moving forward (finally). Hopefully, it will be interesting.
Was it just me, or did anyone else feel like Susy is actually.... ACTING! It was wonderful! So proud! I have to admit, the little scenes with YW and KC actually made me laugh OUT LOUD. I rarely do that. It was great! Keep it up! Very fun and a great release from the amazing tension built up by the KC, WR and YW moments just previous. Maybe they are hitting their stride?
I share a lot of folks concerns with Chung Jo. Is she to become the village bi-otch? She is so mean, lately. I don't know where they are going with her character, but many people like her.

Thanks for the recap, although it confirms my worst fears for what they were going to to with Chung Jo. Her character has so much potential, and it could be so interesting, but instead they are going to trivialize her tragedy until she becomes just another cardboard villain. The cute bores me, so now with the whole Chung Jo revenge arc tanked I will have to concentrate on Wol Ryung's possible redemption. I'm really hating on these stupid writers.

I agree, Chung Jo has so much potential. It would be a really awesome arc if she could bond with Seo-Hwa over what's happened to them and team up to bring that creeper Jo Gwan-woong down to his knees and make him pay for all the disgusting things he's done for the both of them. Not only would she get revenge for her family, but she could also get the inn back. I just want to see her grow, move on and be the awesome woman that she could be.

I personally think that this may be my favorite episode for sheer enjoyment. It had action, it had intrigue and it had the depth that is soooo enjoyable and satisfying. I have to admit, I was very deeply impressed that the writers are going *THERE* with some of the issues that I thought that they would not face. It is so fulfilling and satisfying. Thank you, writers. Thank you director. And of course, THANK YOU CAST! Amazingly done. A+ Episode. Again, my favorite in its scope! You did it! Keep it up!

1.) It would have been better if Wol-ryung had stopped attacking Kang-Chi, not because he was reminded of Seo-Hwa, but because he felt shame in what he was doing to his own son. Him beating up his own son was just so terrible.
2.) The last scene where Seo-Hwa comes face to face with Kang Chi would mean more IF she, like the other - oh- 5000 people in the village had heard the rumor about Kang-Chi being found in the river and being half gumiho. But he is just another person to her... at least for now. So to me, the last scene wasn't so dramatic or "OMG goodness" to me.

Wol-ryung wanting Kangchi to kill him also makes me side eye him a bit. Can't you go jump off a cliff or something? It's not like you heal! I guess not, but yeah it's sad he remembers SH and wants to be with her but they are still both mostly terrible and selfish parents.

Not completely... sure...but... I think that things don't really harm him (remember whenever he scoffed at YW's sword being at his throat earlier?) unless it is caused by Kang chi. He is still an eternal being. It will take another eternal being to harm him, according to this mythology...if I understand the hints played out. I hope that helps a little! :) <3 <3

Haha yes, thanks. Nobody but Kangchi can kill him but I wish he didn't want Kangchi to do that and thought more about how it would feel for Kangchi to kill his own father. I understand he wants to die before he turns into a demon, but he's asking a really selfish thing of his son. Especially since KC does actually have feelings and a longing for his birth parents.
SH/WR/KC break my heart for the cute puppy family that could have been, but I feel they need to make it up in some way to their son for what he's gone through because of them.

1.) I think that's what is actually happening. KC's words were the trigger that not only reminded WR about his love, but showed absurdity of his position towards his son. In other words, his initial desire was to prevent his son from becoming a demon, but if he violently kills KC while performing that purpose, the result could be exactly the opposite of what he wanted: KC will be reborn as a revengeful demon.
2.) I like it this way, because I want her motherly heart to wake up and recognize her son on her own. But if that doesn't happen, then OK, I don't mind a little help from outside.

I did feel really bad for Wol-Ryung, It makes me sad to see that he was as lovable (actually, even more) as Kang Chi, and yet he ended up the way he is now. Even though he doesn't really show it, I feel that it hurts him to see all the things Kang Chi can do and that he has someone who supports him no matter what or who he is. Its just so sad to compare the happy and adorable gumiho from the first episodes and see how he is now, and he has ended up the way he is because of love.
I actually did shed a few tears during his fight with Kang Chi, I think this was the moment when he actually realized what he has become. I do feel some hope that he is still not a full demon and I hope that even if he dies at the end, he can feel love and inner peace.

I find WR's character a little sloppy though better than the mindless stalking machine he was before. I don't predict a happily ever after for him and SH, but maybe they can both die in peace together.
I can't see the whole love square thing being anything more than an annoyance to YW/KC for awhile before the siblings move on. It's far too late for CJ/TS to have any real impact. I seriously hope CJ goes back to being the person she was and gets over her jealousy. Things won't work out like she thinks and it seems they are just making her be mean so we don't care what happened to her.
It's stupid for YW to keep what her father did from Kangchi and it's only going to lead to BAD THINGS. I hope they don't drag it out too much. They just got together. Let them be together instead of apart please.
GW you disappoint me for kidnapping YW for stupid reasons and not because you noticed she was important to Kangchi.
SH does possibly have the worst minions ever. They didn't hear about the gumiho baby news either. Anyway, really looking forward to a family reunion soon. Thank you for the recap.

Well, I kind of feel that she knows those rumors even if we didn't see them telling her. It would be really stupid if she is the only one who doesn't know. As I said many times before I think she is a villain. I don't know if you noticed how her hands were shaking while she is holding a knife. I think she knows exactly who she is dealing with or with who she might dealing with. I mean it would be stupid if just she (again) didn't hear Kangchi while he was fighting with ninjas and literary kicked their asses. When I saw the preview and her telling she wants him dead or alive, I just confirmed that she is nothing more than a villain.
At least we agree that there probably wont be happily ever after for her and WR, but at least I hope he will remain alive in the end. :D I have to be honest, I really don't like SH. I can't explain it, it's just me I guess :-). But it's ok that others want them together, I can understand that.

There are reasons why Yeo Wol is my favorite and apparently no one can resist the Seunggi-Eye-Wobble-of-Doom....No one....not even only mostly evil Gumiho daddies.
Im still really disconnected from this show. I want to care. I really do but everything that isnt KC/YW Im bored. I pay attention to Gumiho Daddy because he is hot and they could go somewhere intresting with this but I dont trust them
And yes, Gumiho daddy just totally plot!wind'd away.

I especially loved the fight sequence between Wol Ryung and Kang Chi. Very, well done all things considered.
A (very) large part of me wishes Wol Ryung's story was it's own mini-drama. That scene where he's slouched over in the monk's cabin, lamenting over how he can't even remember what made him into demon tugged at my heart strings. Choi Jin Hyuk is really selling this role.

I think that since the writing has picked up, I can die a happy person now. They are *at least* giving Choi Jin Hyuk a character with a storyline and dialogue that he can work with! Hurray! But if you were to ask me a week ago, I would have been 100% unsure about the writers abilities. Now, like I said, I can see that these writers don't only have the ability, but they also (so far) seem to have the guts to write a strong Wol-Ryung character. I hope that until the end, they don't "drop" or "chicken out" on completing and giving justice to the parents' story. I think that having SEVERAL or a MULTI-LAYERED drama is the VERY best and the STRONGEST type of super drama!
I agree wholeheartedly with you! That Choi Jin-Hyuk/Wol-Ryung... he can tug at my heartstrings like a master. The storyline is captivating and Choi Jin Hyuk is certainly proving why he is a pro.

At this point, with so many fans riding on the Wol Ryung bandwagon, I think the writers would risk chaos if they didn't (at the very least) give him some kind of redemption. I mean the poor guy, literally, has gotten the shortest end of every stick. Ever. Lost his girl. Lost his chance at becoming human. Heck, he even lost his divinity seeing how he's cursed to roam the lands as a soul-sucking demon with trust issues.
If the writers really wanted to do the character justice though, they would write a Seo Hwa+Wol Ryung reunion scene(s) because if there is a couple that needs to really, REALLY talk, it's them.

Those first 20 minutes were INTENSE. I watched this mostly raw because I couldn't wait for it to be entirely subbed (I have an early summer class tomorrow!). It's true that the first half was stronger than the rest of the episode, but I'm quite satisfied with the place we're in. I hope they don't screw it up. (Cough, leave Chung Jo's character alone, cough).
And the SMOOCHIES. Dear God, it was a really emotional scene and I loved it, honestly. I was expecting something really G-rated due to Suzy's age, with Seung Gi doing all the "kissing" and Suzy just standing there. It was a noce surprise that there was even a little bit of jaw action coming from her side. Of course, it didn't compare to some cable kisses, but for me, it exceeded my expectations in a really good way. Now, give me more Gumiho Baby's kisses!

WR dressed in black, with long flying robe, look more like a Wizard than anything. That's totally COOL, and HOT!
His one uncovered eye is unbelievably expressive. His one eye can act circles around Master Dam's 2 exposed ones. At least 360 circles.
It doesn't look like WR ever had any real intention of hurting YW. It seems to me he is only holding her up as a threat to force KC to submit to his wish of not becoming human.
It is moving to see how KC yelling for WR to spare YW bcos she is his woman brings WR's mind back to the time when he did the same on acct of SW. This remembrance brings out the long buried goodness n love deep in his heart. Hence the blue lights fly, when he freezes in KC's mid-sentence. That's a moment of impact.
The kiss is just so..... long, so much fan service. But I've to say: What girl wouldn't want to kiss a guy who can send blue fireflies swirling in the atmosphere with every kiss?
And it is funny how the next morning, the two of them look at each other's mouth as if it is candy, n have to smack their own lips in anticipation.
CJ has no class. Now that she is a gisaeng n has no chance w KC, she should let him go gracefully, instead of planting seeds of doubt in YW's mind. I bet if it was YW in her position, YW would do what is necessary to facilitate KC's happiness. That's the difference between these 2 girls.
Finally KC comes face to face w his mother n doesn't know it. Next ep....is that when they find out? Hope so.

I find it puzzling that people constantly praise Yeo-Wol's character for being gender-norm defying in a rigid Joseon era and then say Chung-Jo can never be with Kang-Chi because she's a gisaeng. I thought the whole spirit of the drama was to not let your identity and course of life be confined by your class, gender and/or appearance.

This drama is so enjoyable, n this ep is really nice. I comment to share the joy, not to pick a fight. I'm shallow that way.
In this particular story, CJ herself n TS her brother both take it for granted that CJ can no longer be w KC (bcos she was deflowered, bcos she is a gisaeng, whatever). Some ppl were riled abt that in a previous ep weeks ago, n many comments were posted at that time. How many times is it nece to beat a dead cat, to not be shallow?
If there was an Edit button, I could delete 3 little words: "Now that CJ (is a gisaeng) has no chance w KC, she should let him go gracefully,.." It wouldn't change my meaning at all, but if it'd leave you less puzzled, that'd be gt.

Totally agree. If there's anything to dislike about Chung-jo, it comes back to the writers not trusting that the OTP doesn't need a jealous ex to complicate things. Not the fact she's a 'classless woman' or any other sexist BS.
But I do think most commenters (including KDaddict) get that, even if they aren't as careful with wording as they perhaps should be. That said, I'm like you and really pick up on that kind of stuff. It irks me so much when it seems like people are reacting predictably to the forced manipulations of the writers, who are plainly sacrificing an established character for a stupid trope.

From watching the 30-second previews that come after the episode, I could see that one of Seo-hwa's orders are going to be to "bring that Choi Kang-chi back to me, dead or alive." And while there's obviously not enough ground to base that reaction on yet, I'm extremely confused as to what will happen that makes her say that. Word travels fast in a village of poor blabbers; surely something should tip her off that he's an anomaly that could possibly, oh I don't know, be related to who she's searching for?
On another note, has anyone else found it rather disconcerting how in Wol-ryung's brief flashbacks, Seo-hwa was still Lee Yeon-hee - and literally 2 seconds later in present-time, she's a totally different person, all while Wol-ryung & Co. are the same people? I'm starting to wonder if there's some magic involved that lets her hide her appearance or something (similar to Jo Gwan-woong's minion who was able to pose as Kang-chi once to test Tae-seo's alliance). Then again, if that were the case, I guess she wouldn't have needed a decoy for the party...
Anyway, I'm really glad this episode turned out the way it did. Wol-ryung's inner battle is conveyed very nicely, particularly in moments like the one in the Monk's basement where he confesses that he'd rather have died than lose his humanity. I'm interested in seeing how his eventual discover of Seo-hwa's return can possibly further affect his memories and actions, as well as how their story will truly end. Maybe Wol-ryung might even use the remaining time he has left, until hatred consumes him, to make a huge turnaround and do something for his son, and help point him in the direction of the namesake of this drama: The Gu Family Book. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking, who knows.

dont give into the dark side wol ryung! even darth vader was saved in the end!!
and yeah, the whole jo gwan woong shenanigans and seo hwa i care about a lot less compared to kangchi and his dad...altho the tea, shenanigans are adorable...

Interesting first half of the episode, and possibly for the first time watching this drama I didn't notice the time passing by relatively fast compared to previous episodes. I think it's mostly because this drama is giving me the one thing I wanted to see the most: Gumiho Daddy vs Gumiho Baby showdown (finally!).
I'm still irked at the writer for various reasons though. The pieces are finally coming together, but somehow it doesn't have that emotional and narrative impact that I would have liked (probably because the journey was full of plotholes and stuff). Somehow I want Seo-hwa to at least show glimpses of care towards his son and ditch her useless minions. I mean she has been living at Moonlight Garden for a while, and she has to know something about the monk So-jung's whereabouts somehow. It just seems to me that she does care, but she doesn't care enough. Probably vengeance is the first thing on her mind now.
I like that Gumiho Daddy is starting to get more interesting, and I like that he's reminded of his motivation to become human in the first place. In some ways, his character is more closely related to the gumiho-human dichotomy. Honestly, I would have wanted more suffering on Kang-chi's part before Yeo-wool so readily accepts him because then his will to become human is amplified more, somehow. The focus has been deviating from Kang-chi's journey and his reasons to want to become human in the last few episodes or so. Sure, we're reminded of it every now and then but everyone has been accepting (or silently protesting) his gumiho nature for quite some time now. I wanted more verbal and outright protests, capturing public fear and resentment at the much higher level, because I'm starting to feel that a gumiho is not scary at all, hence I'm thinking, "Why does he want to become human again?" and "What's wrong with being a gumiho with cute green eyes?"
Anyway, all of this is moot since we're already at episode 17. It's just that I personally feel it's kind of a wasted opportunity. I'm waiting to see how the writer is going to resolve everything. I don't mind the cute romantic scenes, but I like my shows to be dark and conflicted. Bring on the angst! (and spare me from petty jealousy talk which leads to the KC-YW rift)

This was such a great episode! All the Wol-ryung stuff is awesomesauce, and I love that he's showing signs of humanity. The thing about these kinds of stories, is that humanity is a hard thing to get rid of. It's the emotions and memories of his (Wol-ryung's) quest for humanity that are still deep, deep, DEEP, within him, and seeing his son express those same emotions is what resonates with him. He sees himself, the way he used to be, in Kang-chi and, I think, that is what will save him, in the end. His humanity, and his love for Seo-hwa and Kang-chi.
I don't think we have a love square here with Yeo-wol, Kang-chi, Tae-seo and Gon. I think it's more like a Love Tripod. You've got three guys in love with one girl. But two of those guys are gonna have their hearts broken, which is super sad, but one of them won't, which is super cool. Obviously, it'll be Kang-chi who gets the girl. But what So-jung said that time has me worried. Yeo-wool isn't really gonna die, is she?
I'm glad Seo-hwa is starting to do stuff, too. I don't think she'll recognize Kang-chi just yet though. Or maybe she will, who knows?
Chung-jo is really getting annoying. I like her still, and think she's really strong, but making her act like a jealous bitch is aggravating. Do we really need to go there, Show?

Thank you drama Gods...It took 17 episodes but we finalllyyy got the kiss and now time for the heartbreak to begin. I know its coming cause the drama Gods love to make you melt than try to rip your heart out.
And I will admit the scene with kang chi and wol ryung had me tearing up. I knew deep deep ddddeeeepppp down there had to be some good left in him.
So cannot wait till tomorrow!!!!!!!!

1. That is quite possibly the best kdrama kiss I've ever seen. SHE actually kissed him! And not in the sense that she initiated that second kiss but...SHE ACTUALLY MOVED HER LIPS. Do you know rare that is in dramaland!? SHE ACTUALLY MOVED.
2. Can Wol Ryung kidnap me, please?

If PSH kisses LMH in Heirs then my wife will not let me watch anymore in which PSH acts out of jealousy! LOL
Either way, i think this was the best episode of the series so far. Although it looks like the worst part is coming up, i think it'll turn out quite well. Although at this point there are so many loose ends that i'm curious to see how the writer-nims wrap up. I seriously hope it's not like 95% of all other k-dramas where everything gets resolved in the last 5 minutes. that's lame.

now I remember the Strong Heart episode 119 last year, Suzy shared she had shoots 4 kissing scenes already though she still a minor...Lee Seung Gi was shock then asking her "aren't you still a high school student?", then they asked who is the most memorable kiss for her, she answered it's from Kim Soo Hyun, they tease Suzy at the show...but now Lee Seung Gi got to kiss her too...oh baby Suzy, don't dare to do that kiss again...

Is it weird that, more than seeing Kang Chi and Yeo Wool (I still love them, of course), I am waaayyy more invested in looking forward to what's in store for Wol Ryung and Seo Hwa.

I watched the first 2 episodes, then read most of the episodes until WR came back. I am most definitely watching this for WR/SW. KC/YW are cute, but...you know. Just not as good as the parent generation.

I really liked Chung Jo's character in the previous episodes, a girl who has been exposed to the evils of the real world but still manages to stand up and survive. But right now...well, I don't really think she has a right to be jealous. Seriously, she's the one who pushed Kang Chi away. Kang Chi always trail after her, even picking her over Yeo Wool (like the Lantern Festival scene), but she was the one who kept evading him. She shouldn't have been surprised that Kang Chi would find a girl who will love him, puppy side included.
I LOVE Papa Miho!! I think he's a better parent to Kang Chi than Seo Hwa will ever be. Considering that he's a demon right now, I think it speaks volumes on how I like Seo Hwa. XD
The seen where he remembers his past self in Kang Chi literally broke my heart. It's just so...raw. In that one moment, Kang Chi and Yeo Wool became his last hold in humanity. He left because he knows what it's like to want to protect the girl you love, even though you know you can die. And that moment gave me a spark of hope that Wol Ryung might still get back his former self.
Poor, poor Tae Seo. And Gon. I'm really feeling sorry for them right now. Their love for Yeo Wool is so pure that I really want to feel bad for them if I wasn't rooting for Gumiho Baby. Hahaha!!
I want to say something about that kiss...

I think this episode does well in balancing the cute scenes and the plot-wise scenes. Somewhat. Great episode!!! I was screaming throughout.
(I kept replaying the scene where Yeo Wool asked Kang Chi "What are we going to do tonight?" And Kang Chi just stood there with his imagination on overdrive. XD Naughty, naughty Kang Chi!! Kang Chi's expression was PRICELESS!)

I totally agree. Especially when it comes to SH. I think that WR is actually better parent than SH, considering that he is a demon. At least he gave him some useful advice according to his own experience. Well he didn't kill him even if he is a demon... Hmm, well he did try in this episode but I think it's more to scare him off. SH on the other side ordered to her minions personally to bring Kangchi to her dead or alive, and since that she's a human, nonetheless his own mother, this is really bad and very mean. This somehow shows that she actually doesn't care for him at all. I don't like her and I think she doesn't deserve WR, that's why I am not for their happily ever after. :D But I can understand those people who wish that.
They could bring him back and find him another woman :D.
