Yuri cast as Lee Jong-seok and Seo In-gook’s love interest

It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. The new sports movie No Breathing starring Lee Jong-seok (School 2013) and Seo In-gook (Answer Me 1997) as rival swimmers has finally locked in a confirmation for a leading lady in Girls’ Generation idol Kwon Yuri. This will be her first major starring role in a film, after playing the second lead in last year’s Fashion King.

You guys’ll have to tell me how she did, because I didn’t stick around long enough to see her in that drama. She did win a few popularity awards for the role, which were pretty much the only awards that drama will ever be associated with, but that only tells me she has lots of fans, which I already knew.

No Breathing comes from the writer of The Gift of Room 7 and Korea, and stars Lee Jong-seok as the golden boy swimmer who always comes in first, and Seo In-gook as the “genius swimmer” (snicker) who purposely stays away from swimming. Yuri plays an aspiring musician with a carefree personality who grew up with the boys as children. The three of them are lifelong friends who suddenly find themselves having to juggle love, friendship, and competition, all at once. That actually sounds really cute in a Last Match kind of way. Why is this not a drama??

The movie starts shooting next week for a release later this year, which is crazy since Lee Jong-seok has a drama starting in three weeks. Guess we’re not the only ones using the gateway to the fourth dimension around here.

This is going to sound harsh but just my opinion. The less of Girls' Generation members I see acting, the better. Some of them are passable, but it'll be wonderful if they stuck with what they're superior at -- catchy music. Of course in reality you can't be considered a super idol unless you sing, dance, act, and entertain while balancing on a unicycle with an orange on your nose.

Yuri surprised me in Fashion King. I actually thought she was way better than Shin Se-kyung, although that's not saying much since I really don't like SSK's acting.

Anyway she's one of the few idols turned actresses whose scenes don't make me cringe, so that's a good start. I'll keep an eye out for this movie. Lee Jong-seok and Seo In-guk being part of it doesn't hurt either ^-^

I actually thought Yuri's acting was pretty bad... And that's coming from a big SNSD fan. I don't know if it's because her character was so depressive and that's not Yuri at all. Or maybe it's the English, because Yuri's English is pretty hilarious. Either way, I don't think she really showed her acting potential in Fashion King. It was a terrible drama too.

BUT!!! Yuri is an excellent swimmer and there's a big chance that this is why she got the role. Yuri is highly passionate about swimming, so I'm sure she'll be 100% invested in her role.

But... She's a musician in this movie, not a swimmer. I've always felt reticent about idols being cast in films and dramas. Casting so many of them in Reply Me didn't hurt anyone, but I'd say in general I'm a little skeptical.

I have to agree. over half the time, the idols that are casted have average or below-average skills. I think the PDs either got lucky or were really smart in their castingreply 1997; the cast breathed and lived their roles, which what made the drama so enjoyable (along with countless other factors).

She is a musician, but her specialty is playing guitar while doing the elementary backstroke. But then, she hits her head on a pool ladder and becomes convinced that she is Ophelia. Can the hero rescue her before she tosses her last daisy?
Believe me, people are going to be amazed!

LOL! I have to agree!

Read somewhere that SSK is supposed to be one of the up & coming or already is a fine actress. If she is good, all the mediocres are good then! I wanted to give myself a chance & watch her in When a man loves. Didn't get past ep8 even there are lots of shirtless Song SH. You have to give it to her for the confidence by choosing this kind of role again & again!

Was actually her fan during her small stint with sooyoung in a romcom Unstoppable marrige. But after FK, urrgghh. I so want to pull my babies Seo In-gook & Lee Jong-seok out of this movie. I know its not her fault that I was not able to finish FK but still I even cant remember any scene of hers in tat drama.
Among the Girls Generation ladies, I think the one with most potential to be an actress would be Sooyoung so I am looking forward to her drama.

I just hope that producers stop casting idols cause there are a bunch of dramas that really turned me down because I cant seem to feel the character due to the acting of an idol.
their popularity can only pull their fans who would love them biasedly.

HHmmnnn. but I'm crossing my fingers that she will prove me wrong and maybe make me a believer of her, Sooyoung did, so there is still hope.

The thing is, Fashion King was just such a disaster that it was actually hard for me to judge her acting based on that. The actors basically gave up, so did the writers. So I'm just going to wait and see how the movie will turn out to be. Story sounds adorable though and at least the movie won't be lacking in the visual department.

I agree with that. We shouldn't give up on her so soon! Fashion King should not be the only drama we judge her by. Seriously I am liking Yoo Ah In in his current drama, Jang Ok Jung , and Fashion King is gonna be wiped out of my memory, hopefully =)

I watched FK till the end and I can barely remember her. If I'm lucky, selective amnesia will hit me again. We all know that we are going to watch this for the female characters... >.>
And yes, what about the packed schedule, LJS? I guess that if Joo Won could handle Gaksital and variety, then everything is possible.

I only saw clips of Fashion King but I bet Yuri was loads better than Shin Se Kyung (who was the lead). What a joke it is to see Shin Se Kyung acting in "When A Man Loves". At least I know she can read because that's what she does it in: read the script. Heck, they could have grabbed anyone off the street to do the same quality of acting she's doing in the drama.

I'm really scratching my head with her because I heard how competitive it is to make it in acting in Korea. So with all the competition out there, how in the world did she make it to be a lead opposite Song Seung Hun?? She's like an expressionless statue. Anyone else agree?

Sorry for digressing - my point: I bet Yuri was better than the lead!

Agree! I suffered through FK (I really don't know why - I REALLY want those wasted hours back!!!), and I even tried When a Man Loves for a few eps just to see if the story was worth it... but SSK is reaaaally bad. I'm not sure if perhaps she picks bad scripts, but I think it must be her. She even annoyed me on running man. She is pretty but..... never gonna try anything with her in it ever again.

I think Song Seong Hun's acting is WAY better than hers. That's saying a lot, right?

Yuri was alright, in comparison to SSK. Although like a previous poster said, FK was such a mess it's hard to tell. Everyone looked bad.... even the 2 male leads who are usually great.

You're right. SSK is really bad, and it's not the scripts. I can't tell whether she's mad, happy, worried, scared, etc. because she doesn't show any emotion. She's like Mona Lisa. Lol
The storyline in "When A Man Loves" is okay, but she's really ruining it for me.

I totally agree with you. I want those wasted hours back too! when I was at ep 15 or so for FK..it was already pretty torturous and my fren who has finished it warned me to just give it up. but i hate watching a drama halfway so thought i ll jus sit thru it. oh boy..did i regret that decision. FK is the worst korean drama i have ever watched.

But speaking of Yuri's acting, I ll have to admit, for her first drama I thought she did pretty well. n not jus considering the fact that she's an idol turned actress. perhaps because its in comparison with SSK, who is really the most 'wooden' actress. like bambledd said, i cant tell when she's mad happy worried or scared too! lol. sometimes i just feel like shaking her n say "show us some emotion pls!! anything!! "

that's also the reason I am not watching When a Man Loves yet..well, if its really good after reading reviews i might change my mind. but I am not sure if shirtless SSH is worth me sitting thru SSK's acting...

I saw SSK in High Kick Through the Roof and thought she was pretty alright. Given she had been acting as the younger counterpart of leads in various dramas before emerging as the lead actress herself, I'm pretty surprised so many people labelled her as Cannot Act.

Her role in TWDR was unmemorable. But then again, that was mostly a drama with guys and guys only.

I... totally remember her role in TwDR. o.O If you don't remember her character I can't imagine how it's possible to remember the drama. So I'm confused by that remark.

Anyway! I thought SSK was amazing in TwDR. I thought she did the best she could with what turned into an awfully thankless role in FK and... that's all I've seen her in. But per those dramas -- girl can act.

As to Yuri... She did okay in FK. Nothing stellar -- but again, she was dealing with an odd role and an odd story so it's hard for me to blame her acting skills. I mean Yoo Ah-in came over odd in that drama and he's a good actor. (Only Lee Je-hoon came out of FK smelling like roses, but he's a phenomenal actor, so there you are.)

Yeah, why not a drama???

We all know that Fashion King was not as good as other dramas. It may be one of the dramas whose ending is.. (well i don't know how to describe it..) but please do not judge the actors.

First of all, this was Yuri's first acting project where she is the second lead role. Her character "Choi Anna" is a very difficult person. I believe her way of portraying the character is only based on the character's description. She did a good job with her lines.

To colleen:
Just watch this movie and judge her again. Let's see if her acting skill set is only comprised of tilted head posing with as much emotion as a blank wall.

Is this movie funded by SME? Amazing how Yuri can cross over from Yeouido to Chungmuro especially after Fashion King.

This should have been a drama but preferably with someone who can act. Park Bo Young - she'll be cute and so petite beside Lee Jong Seok who will tower over her. Or Han Groo - I can see the chemistry between the three of them as childhood friends. Or Park Se Young, there was that spark between them in School 2013 but that drama wasn't really about lurve.

I think she seems "determined to improve" because she knows that, once GG's shelf life ends (which, considering they're idols, could be in about two/three years), if she doesn't have acting to fall back on, she'll pretty much be out of the industry (she certainly couldn't make it as a solo artist).

That's why so many idols are desperate to gain a foothold as an actor/actress.

I would agree with you if it was a less known idol group and I don't follow kpop but if any group doesn't have to worry about money it's SNSD. Look back at Hyori in her early days with Finkl I would have never pegged her for a solo artist because she was frankly not good. Yes her acting was a flop but she has come a long way as a solo artist.

Idol groups have their concerts on weekends. They would fly to the designated country on Friday. Have the show on Saturday and Sunday, and fly back on Sunday night. They would be on set in Korea on Monday.

I think the crazier schedule would be Jong-seok's, as he's the lead in both.

I actually really like Yuri...as an idol on variety shows. But not so much as an actress. I'm usually one who says that idols should be given a chance as a lead and not let their idol status deter people from not wanting the said idol to participate as lead...but she was so bad in Fashion King. She was too aware of herself, it felt so unnatural and I got second hand embarrassment watching her act. However, I'm going to try and stay positive. It's been so long since Fashion King that it is possible she has gotten so much better!

I haven't really seen her act so I don't know how she is. Though it makes sense that they would cast someone who is in the music business to play an aspiring musician.

Idol or not aside, and with korea's recent law (that i read about somewhere, sometime ago) about having to inform about any use of lip sync/play doubling in use especially in dramas; it makes sense to have someone who could sing/play actually do the role, rather than say an actress where they would need someone to substitute in the singing/playing parts. That's just my view though.

And as I said I haven't seen her acting, so can't judge that, but you do have some idols that can act, just as you have some actresses/actors that can pass as singers/musicians. And you would hope that they would cast someone who would be able to portray the character.

I think Yuri did well for a newbie in Fashion King despite the drama not being good. Her role then was underrated and should have been given more room for character development which made it look like she didn’t do well (but I think it wasn’t her fault). I wasn’t a fan of her or Girls Generation, but I became (sort of) a fan after seeing her act. I hope she does well in this movie.

In all honesty SSK has her hits and misses but she's far better and more reliable in her acting than any idol actress in the drama/moviesphere, including Suzy. FK was a disaster from the getgo and Yuri was flat and unmemorable. And to cast her as the LEAD on the big screen with two solid male actors? It's obviously because GG has a huge fanbase, and SME is gaining rapid moolah behind the scenes in this industry. It's too bad Kang Sora can't be in it! That would totally rock and the male-female dynamic/chemistry would be interesting to see.

To be honest I only ever watched her scenes in Fashion King and yeah she was sort of (more so really) stiff. That being said with what everyone else calling her slightly better that SSK I don't even know what to think! I still think that she does better at more comedic roles - even though she has the face that suits characters like hers in FK - high class etc etc. It's just comedic roles almost falls into how she is in real life so it's probably more easier/natural for her. Hence like most people, watching her in Unstoppable Marriage was more bearable. I'm an SNSD fan and I love Yuri but I do agree Sooyoung takes the cake within the group in regards to acting.

Yuri as a newbie in fashion king is considered alright. maybe good. i dont think she's that bad. she can improve if she's given a chance.

but for Shin Se Kyung who have tons of experience under her belt (ok i might sound exaggerating), she's considered wooden and stiff. and why the hell she keep getting main roles when people know her acting is not good?

and yeah i'm against this idol-turned-actor/actress thing but u can give certain people exceptional. some idol can improve their acting skill but some just have NO SKILL at all.

my opinion, for example, Big Bang's TOP and SuJu's Siwon. they were really bad when they started acting years ago. stiff, wooden, say anything. but now they improve A LOT. they do have acting skill, just give them a chance.

but for some idols, (i'm not going to name it. fans will strangle me to death) even with dozens of chance, they just dont have the talent to act. just please find some other things to do, like joining the variety world.

I don't understand either how Shin Se Kyung could get any lead role. She must have some connections, relatives in high places or something because there's just no other way. She is sooooooooo bad. I have nothing against her but her acting is such a joke.

Nepotism must be it. There's no other answer!

Generally speaking, I don't like it when idols get cast in major roles. And I've found out the hard way that I really don't like most SNSD members as actors.

Having said that, we have to give Yuri a chance because she's relatively new to this and could improve given time. Take Suzy, for example. She was stoic for most of Dream High, but by the time she got around to doing Big and Gu Family Book, she's gotten way better. The same goes for a bunch of idol-turned-actors (i.e. Yoon Eun-hye, T.O.P, Park Yoochun). Not everyone is going to be a runaway star from their very first acting gig (i.e. Seo In-guk, Jung Eun-ji).

Yuri being given a lead role in this film may be a bad decision but I'm still probably gonna see the movie if only because my love for those two male leads knows no bounds. Haha.

Yup, she sure does. She's still horrible, and I don't see that face cracking out of its standard immobility any time soon. She's too young to have had Botox, right?
I think it's sortof cute, how fans always have this idea that acting is like jumping rope, and so of course the poor little dears aren't very good at it when they start out, but with practice they will just get better and better! Craptastic idol actors can get marginally more sufferable, but 90% of them will never be good.
But talent is not the issue - the fact that their delusional fans will slavishly follow them with handfuls of money wherever they go and regardless of how well they perform is the truth that keeps these wheels turning.

90% is being generous, I'd say 95%. It's kind of sad that this is going to be the future of dramaland.

i don't get it the whole idol going on actress thing... they are talented musicians atleast most of them but why do they need to sully their images with bad acting gigs??

only some idols are good at acting like choi siwon, lee seung gi and some other but most of them suck and the whole snsd group i like their songs but they are some serious cringe worthy actresses for sure

I had this Patrick Star shocked moment when I saw the announcement made by SMent on twitter yesterday and turned into a Grumpy Cat shortly after. Earlier I was so excited anticipating for the movie but no longer so since the announcement made.

...but the movie has Lee Jong Suk and Seo In Guk! I'm so conflicted. Fashion King was a disaster and Yuri's acting was rather wooden and stiff in that. I'm very much afraid her acting would make me irritated while watching the movie. Tbh I was hoping that Park Shin Hye would bag that lead actress role in this film. sigh

I think she's rather stoic in Fashion King but, honestly, FK was just so horrible that I don't think it's fair to me to judge anyone based on that drama. It's like everyone gave up midway of the drama or something.

I've seen her (and Sooyoung) in Unstoppable Marriage and they're okay (and funny!) there. So I hope she'll do better here with a brighter role and better writer compared to the horribly written Fashion King.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this movie because I love this writer's previous movies and the cast are such eye candies :D

As her fan, I don't think that Yuri isn't a good actress as i see her in Fashion king. I like her role a lot but she didn't have enough experience to act that sophisticated role.

but I always look forward for her next role because experience will help her improve. I hope this movie will become big! I want to see Yuri become Idol actress like Suzy does.
